Hi all,
How is the Verizon/Thunderbolt 3G/4G experience in the Midwest? In particular, MN, IA, WI, IL, MO, MI, OH? Do you think it's a viable option for Voice & Mobile broadband needs for a traveling sales rep in the Midwest territory considering battery life and 3G/4G coverage in the area? Please share your experience...
Thanks
Although I don't get to Ohio much, I can vouch for the rest of the states. Coverage is excellent with a few exceptions.
SE Missouri is garbage. 1X still works pretty good...128k or so. You won't be stranded, but don't expect to be surfing the internets at light speed.
NE Missouri and far Northwestern Illinois (Quad Cities area) is about the same. I forget the details, but some other carrier has a corner on the market up there and won't lease towers to VZW.
Same deal as above in far NW Missouri and SW Iowa. I think it's ALLTel up there.
Not much coverage from anyone in northern WI or MI.
To be honest, Big red has the best coverage, by far, of any carrier period. I've used them all and keep coming back.
4G is great where you get it. (St. Louis, Chicago, Twin Cities, Central Ohio) To be perfectly honest though, I live in St. Louis, and generally have my 4G off. It's too hard on the battery even where you have fantastic signal. I still get 1.5 Mbps on 3G and get double the use out of my phone. For normal use, this is plenty fast enough.
I live in Wheaton which is a west suburb of Chicago. Speeds are good. I usually get about 5-6 mbps down. Speeds in the city are fantastic though. I get about 15 mbps at my girlfriend's place in the West Loop.

Whoever designated MN, IA, WI, IL, MO, MI, OH the midwest had never looked at a map.
Here is to hoping we get 4G in the "true" midwest of the country.

If your worried about battery life and stable connection the tbolt isn't for you, at this time. Try Droid X, Blackberry, or dare I say an iPhone. LTE is still a work in progress.

Thanks for the replies. I think we're going to stay away from 4G for now and wait til bugs see worked out and battery life is better.

Oh no, not the iPhone! Back to the trusty old BB. I find it still the easiest to manage in a corporate environment.

If you don't stray too far from the interstate corridors, 3G was fine between my home in Lafayette, IN to eastern Ohio on my trip 2 weeks ago. Western MD on into WV might as well be a 3rd word country - no 3G at all. Not even in Morgantown near the university.
4G in Lafayette and eastern Columbus, OH. Supposedly also around Cinci. Got a brief taste of 4G on the east side of Indy last week when they apparently were testing it, but not since. Lafayette rep said by fall there will be 4G from Indy to Lafayette and everywhere in between. Can't help you with southern IN, since I haven't been there since I came back from AT&T.

Just got 4g turned up, I'm in Milwaukee WI!!! I'm in West Allis, a suburb of Milwaukee, about 10 minutes west of downtown.

Ha ha yeah. It is. So far the only speeds that match it is Fios (and docsis3.0 speeds). but they don't have that everywhere.
I guess I should clarify.. I dont give a crap about anything faster than 5mb down...it's upload speeds that matter to me.
Cablemodem speeds. Road Runner btw
T-bolt.
This is GREAT NEWS!! I live in Racine ...just south of Milwaukee wonder if this means we will have it soon?! I work in Zion ,Ill and have 4g there. Anyways ...thanks for the heads up!
Ohh wow. That upload is slower than my dsl.
I wish ISPs would start focusing on upload speeds too. With all this talk about cloud computing and certain ISPs providing like 50GB of online backup space, you'd think we can get a decent upload speed.

That's great news! Unfortunately I'm not seeming to pick up a signal and I'm in Brown Deer (northern milwaukee county). I will have to try when I go closer to downtown tonight. Are you getting a consistent signal or was it only for a bit? I don't believe anything has been announced yet.

All of downtown, the third ward, and the airport have had it for at least the few weeks that I've had my TB. I dropped my wife off at the airport a couple weeks ago at around 5am. Pulled 28.8, 25, and 22 DL on separate tries. I picked her up in the afternoon the next day and got 10-15 DL. Very impresssed.

There has been 4g in Milwaukee since the tb was released. It has been my experience that it goes west about to 35th and south to around College. I do occasionally get 4g going more south and west but it seems to be strongest in dt Milwaukee.
i'm in Waukesha. Considering buying this phone.

Cool, I live in Racine too!
4G is trash...at least for me...I live in Greenfield and even in strong areas of 4G coverage I cannot complete a single large download...tried different handsets, SIM cards, ROMs and radios...it's the towers.
Not impressed and wish I kept my Droid Incredible
Congrats I noticed 4G working in Green Bay about a month ago, if I member correctly I was drinking a lil so got more excited than I should of

Speaking of LTE in Milwaukee...
Either a lot more are running on the LTE now in Milwaukee, or the radio's in our LTE phones are being capped. I've been noticing some pretty bad performance some days. Even with full strength, only pulling 2mbps down yet 13mbps up..
I sure hope 4G spreads all the way between Green Bay and Milwaukee someday - I am about halfway between the two cities and really wanting that extra G! Lol

I'm kinda SOL when it comes to ANY stable data at house.
I live in semi-rural area of Racine, and my house is almost a Verizon dead spot.
I can sit in my house and only get 1-3 bars of 3G, and maybe 1.2mbps down at MAX.
However I can walk to either edge of my 8 acre property and pick up the LTE, and get 1-2 bars and pull 5-10mbps.
Same here but I live in the city of Milwaukee

GREENSBORO N.C. (WGHP)— Verizon announced on Tuesday it will turn on its 4G LTE network in Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point on July 21.
4G mobile service gives consumers service up to 10 times faster than a 3G network. The company expects average data rates in real-world, loaded network environments to be 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.
The 4G technology also will improve coverage strength inside buildings, as it runs on a powerful 700 megahertz wireless frequency.
The deployment provides 4G coverage throughout the surrounding areas of Cooleemee, Mocksville, Lexington, Welcome, Bermuda Run, Clemmons, Lewisville, Bethania, Rural Hall, Tobaccoville, King, Walkertown, Kernersville, Stokesdale, Oak Ridge, Summerfield, McLeansville, Whitsett, Sedalia, Jamestown, Archdale, Thomasville, Trinity, Randleman, Forest Oaks, Pleasant Garden, Liberty, Franklinville, Asheboro and Ramseur.

Anyone see 4G yet in the Triad ???
I know it's live in Charlotte. Great speed results too when we were down there testing it for work.
Still won't see it in Winston until later this month though.
I think the asheville and hendersonville area will be going live at this time too.

you'll only have to wait until 2013 at the latest! and if it's near/in your county, even as a poor signal, you'll get it probably early next year if verizon didn't announce your city this year.

Have you seen the 4G Icon flash yet???
haven't really paid attention to it since I mainly use wifi because of the crap signal in my office. Know it was on for a couple hours a month or so ago but that's the only time I've noticed.

I noticed it then too. But, the other day I saw it flash for a min. then nothing since.
Glad to hear that 4G will be available in Greensboro.. I go to school there and cant wait to tether my TB to my computer instead of using the schools wifi. Also it will be nice to have 4G whenever since I dont where I live. Thank you OP for this update.
Awesome, now i can try out the 4G when I'm around!

The 4G Icon was on today at 2:20 !!!! Greensboro is apparently testing today. It's not as fast as Charlotte but maybe that because it's reverting back to 3G sometimes.

i was in Vegas in May and the 4G service was horrendous. There was coverage everywhere and I always had 2 bars at least, but the data connection wouldnt pass any data. I spent the whole weekened on 3G because of the horrendous spotty 4G service.
We met up with a buddy who lives in Vegas who had recently got a TB. He could not stand the phone. He kept talking about crying to Verizon so he could get a Iphone4... I was like, "BUT BUT 4G!!!" and then I realized the 4G barely works for him.
I dunno, maybe its better now.
4G is developed and fast in Las Vegas. 10 - 17Mbps down and 7 - 10Mbps up is my experience. Keep in mind that this is in North Las Vegas.

Thanks for the info, we are south of the strip hopefully the service will be decent. Thanks again everyone!
I was in Downtown Vegas for a week and the 4G was great, I used it to tether while in the room.
I live in Las Vegas and Verizon has the best coverage. I have had T-mobile, Att and Sprint. 4G is ok. Best around the freeways. I live in the (South of the 215) Southwest and the coverage for 4g is spotty but better than anything else I have had. Most major areas have good 4g Coverage.

Same exact thing I thought it was the rom I was using....like may 19th or so around then....how funny it drove me nuts
i was there for edc and 4g sucked on the strip and sucked at the motorspeedway (but to be fair with 100,000 people all the services sucked).
Was also there last week and once again it sucked all along the strip..
Thinking about jumping ship. I am sick and tired of paying all this money and them treating us like this.
i had t-mobile back in the day and they absolutely sucked. but that was like years ago. i was wondering if there are any t-mobile, sprint, att customers who would recommend their service as a viable alternative to Big Red.
Sprint LTE is hitting central nj this year maybe even next month.
I'm in central jersey, on t-mobile.. like it a lot
connection is pretty much always good, and data speed is great

Jackson is a service black hole, as you probably already know. The town basically banned towers from being constructed, it's a nightmare. Surprisingly, T-Mobile has decent service in Jackson, my AT&T service is fine, Sprint's was a bit iffy there. My experiences have been along County Line Road, where I have family.
Outside of Jackson, I'd highly recommend AT&T. Sprint's 3G data varies wildly, anywhere from 2mb/s down in Brick, to maybe 200k in Holmdel. Since AT&T upgraded our area, I'm getting about 5mb down during the day, a high of 7-8mb down at night.
For the record, if you don't care about LTE, Straight Talk works GREAT around us. Same speed as AT&T's normal service, for $45/month.
I want to hear from people that have T-mobile in southern california or had within the past year... I currently have AT&T and Verizon is out of the question cuz the max price difference is 10 bucks.
Hows the reception now?
Do they still drop texts?
Everything I heard about them is about 2+ years old now, since my unlimited gets throttled and I get spammed with texts and warnings I don't see why I'm paying a premium (that was why I kept them). I use TONS of hangout texts voip and maps/directions.
I currently have a romed out S4 AT&T MDL which I carrier unlocked and aws unlocked that I would like to keep for now.
I'm looking for real feedback with signal and coverage (we all know the maps are BS lol).
I searched and found 2012 threads but it's 2015 now lol

I'm not in Southern CA, but I can give you some info. T-Mobile finally rolled out their LTE in 2013. Before then, they pretty much sucked. Good plans, but slow speeds and spotty coverage. The speeds now are the fastest (overall) in the country, and their coverage is much better. If you're in a city, coverage is great, but in rural areas, or between cities, coverage can be an issue.
PCMag.com rated T-Mobile very highly in LA and San Diego.
All maps aren't BS, at least the ones that aren't crowd-sourced. Sensorly.com is great for specific area coverage Opensignal.com is similar.
