I had a SGS i9000 before. I flashed it serveral times with different OS an different programms and even bricked it one time.
I recovered it with my hommade JIG.
No matter what ROM/kernel i always had battery-drain in cell-standby-only without any apps installed/sync.
Now on my Nexus S i'm very satisfied with the standby-time (2.3.4 stock, locked, VDF i9023)
I'd like to root it and install CWM and maybe a custom kernel.
Now my question: Is anybody out there who had a good batterylife on his Nexus S before flashing and a bad after flashing?

Consequences of flashing:
1 Getting addicted and flashing a new ROM every day
2 Visting XDA every minute of free time which leads too....
3 ... neglecting family and losing job
But in all seriousness my battery life has always been around 18 hours with mdoerate usage

Very true for 1 and 2 but not really the number 3 as I have controlled by parents. LOL/
But yes, the battery life has always been around 18 hours

I have tried 4 different radios and this phone still randomly reboots with frequency. I am the the 802 radio and it seems even worse then earlier radios. I am currently on gingerritis rom which i installed yesterday and have probably had 12 reboots since then.
Is it a combination of the rom and radio, or does just the radio make the phone reboot? I am really just tempted to flash it back to stock, sell it with the warning of this phone enjoys random reboots and get another phone.
while i typed this up it just rebooted twice on its own
I dont think the radio is what is going to fix the reboot issue. I know for some of the roms the fix was flashing the ziggy kernel.
Maybe give that a shot.

If hes using gingeritis, hes already using ziggy's kernel. Sounds weird i know, but try a new battery

i think overclocking to high and all the kernel cpu mods are whats causing this, not the radios.

I agree. Ziggy's stock voltage settings are very conservative north of about 1.5GHz. If you're tweaking it, definitely pay attention to the voltage.
nope not touching voltage or overclocking, i just put rom on thats about as far as i go tweaking phone.
Installed M0N0LITHTH3ORY rom and so far no reboots today, the gingeritis one must hate my phone cause in the less than 24 hours it was on the phone damn thing rebooted easy 10 times. But now this one is giving me some unexpected errors with weather app. I will give this one a week and see how it does and if no good on to next rom i guess.

Have you ever formatted /system?
yeah every time i put new rom i go into clockwork recovery
i wipe / factory reset
then format /system /cache /data
and wipe davlik cache
then install rom
double post...
i know my phone didnt like a few different roms. try a diffeerent one. also try doing each step 3 times. i did that after my phone rebooted on an a0sp rom by droidtheroy, after that it worked just fine on the rom that was rebooting
You know what? I was having the same problem and tired as hell of my TB. I was so tired of the little problems and the large rebooting problem that I had learned to really hate this phone.
A few days ago I decided to just use the new leaked, stock, unrooted, GB 210 RUU and give that one more try before I either took a hammer to this phone or unrooted and tried to get VZW to replace it.
I've had the latest leaked RUU on this phone for a few days now and I'm loving it again. Yeah, stock, unrooted, but also super fast GPS locking, fast 3g/LTE switching, no more reboots, not one. Battery is actually not bad at all after turning off a few of the stock bloat like Blockbuster. The gui is fast and smooth, I can't say whether or not it is as fast as it was when I was running custom ROMs but as far as I'm concerned its a big who cares. I now have a nicely working phone again. This is just my experience and my opinion, YMMV!

I got reboots with gingeritis and liquid ROMs, I've had no reboots in a week now running Virus' Synergy ROM. Try a different ROM, it should fix your problems.
Here's a link to Virus' work:

Second the ROM recommendation. Try a different one. I had the same issue with wanting to grenade this thing until I found a combo of ROM and radio that was stable for my use and applications.
Now I wouldn't think of tossing this phone.

Stability and battery life good for me with stock 1.70.605.0. Currently at 868 hours uptime.
yeah i am on monolith rom and so far no reboots, i am going to give this one a shot for now, hopefully this cures it.
I am looking for a rom that handle me using my phone all day and not dying. I would love to find a rom that possibly allowed you to turn off the lte or whatever. As long as i dont have to charge my phone 3 times a day. Can anyone help me out?
many topics posted on this, the search feature is ur friend
My opinion
Seanscreams skyscreamsandwich rom has excellent battery life, I think if you try that with the new UCLA kernel you'll be very happy.
I have the stock Rogers ROM, rooted with CWM installed. I installed updated stock UCLA radio and kernel last week to get the benefits of latest kernel. Worked great but I've never been thrilled with battery life so Saturday I flashed Faux kernel v. 9m I think it was, on top of stock ROM and new updated stock radio.
Installed Set CPU to control new scalable speed kernel. I'm not easy to impress but it's absolutely unbelievable. Set to a conservative profile I've got blazing speed and 50% better battery life after 2 days use.
Go for it but don't do any playing before installing custom recovery ( CWM) and making a Nandroid backup.

The Skyrocket has respectable battery life, consideeing its LTE and 4.5",screen. A ROM is not yoir solution to getting extended battery life out of your phone. While some ROMs are more battery friendly than others, there are better alternatives. Juice Defender seems to be really popular and successful at prolonging battery life.

Here's a link to the thread. I'm sure there are others like it. I definitely learned a lot:

Needless to say before any of that is done, you wanna make sure the following is done first:
1. Make sure your phone is rooted and have Clockwork mod setup.
2. Do a nandroid backup.
Hope this helps.
My phone takes a solid 5 minutes to start up. Is this normal on the Inspire? My dad has a different model HTC and it only takes a few seconds.
Would rooting and installing a different ROM help this?
Would that also help with battery life? Mine is awful.

Are you on stock? The inspire should not take that long to boot. Maybe 3 mins
Yes, it is bone stock. I've had it since. Sept and am considering rooting now. 3 min is still a long time, is that normal?

a fresh boot depending on how many apps you have, the class of your micro sd card and how much media it has to scan can take up to 3 min.
If your Dad's phone only takes a few seconds then most likely it is not off but rather in hibernation or suspended. 3 minutes is about right for one that is completely off. Mine is rooted and still takes that long.
I'm running aospX with boot animatin off. It's the only ROM I've seen take <3mins for a full boot, TBH.

A factory reset would probably be healthy for your phone at this point. I would give that a try. As far as your dad having a different phone than you, dont compare apples and oranges as it will never give you a happy feeling Ya I would personally just wipe it and start fresh, i have such a bad rom addiction so i never get clutter, never goes more than a couple weeks without being wiped lol.
Okay, how about battery life? Will rooting and installing a custom Rom help that? The only way I make it through the day is if I have the juice defender app on.

Depending on the from yes. AOSP is great for batteries. But you give up Sense and everything that comes along with it. Custom Roma tend to do better on battery but it will mostly depend on how you use and set up your device. Apps and Widgets use a lot of battery
The display is the only thing draining my battery on cm7. I recommend the 7.2 rc1 build. Very fast, smooth, stable, good looks too.

I had the same problem but a system reset did wonders. I also recommend CM7.2.

I don't think it's bad unless it affects your offline life.
On a serious note, even I was wondering if flashing different roms(flashoholic that I have become) has a negative effect on phone/memory/sdcard/ram/processor/battery/etc life.
I also want to know this... will flashing make your ram less?
or how about... will always doing factory reset will make your ram (or any memory) less?
I myself flash 2-3 ROM's everyday. I think my battery life has decreased somehow .

I flashed a new rom/kernel whenever its available and it suits me. Otherwise, I'll be trying out initd scripts or mods.. It's battery life also had depreciated much. While owning the i9003 for over 2 years, I've gotten the Nexus 7 and 10. I now prefer Nexus's development because only Nexus can get the latest development and you get to enjoy all the developments from big names like Trinity, Franco, Faux, Motley, Rasbeanjelly, AOKP (pub edition), CarbonRom and many more.. To ROM/kernel junkies, you must own a Nexus at least once in your lifetime, no regrets... I highly recommend it...

hi friends i was wondering that how much times we can flash a rom to our phone, there has to be a limit right as the rom we use is technically eeprom i.e. electrically erasable programmable read only memory. i think it should be around 200-400 right
Oh ! Never knew we got limit on flashing roms !
**** I've already flashed about 120-140 times different backups and roms ,
I wonder what will happen if I go on flashing roms and reaches the limit ?

I've beat 200 long time ago so........ if there is some kind of limitation should be somewhere around 2000 or more.
Now don't get me wrong about the count, just think about it, flashing of whatever rom there contains at least 2 flashes for me, that's the minimum.
Example with NExt Gen and Miui, both of them have gaaps.
1-st flash -> superwipe.
2-nd flash-> rom.
And what about roms that have some kind of 'fix' or 'patch', or lack of inbuilt gaaps(or both of this things), that's at least 3-rd flash. Another thing, sometimes rom loops somewhere, that's at least 2 more flashes (that was mandatory in the start, Jaggy 2.x always stucked on white screen for me).
So have fun and flash whatever you want, the limit is more than 200
its been more than 1 year that I'm using Pico and I have flashed 150-200 times during the time. No problem at all. When I searched in google I found that flash drives can be formatted 10000 times...... so no worries I guess
If you are worried about the wear out effect flashing ROM, you should know that every partitions of our phone are on a NAND chip :highfive:. Which mean that installing/uninstalling apps have same effect as flashing ROM (maybe less stressful ). And basically using your phone everyday will erase/rewrite somethings on the EEROM .
So don't worry and just go ahead trying ROM as you like. Just make sure to don't stress your phone too much to not make it hot. I think the damage that heat can cause (especially on the battery) is ways greater than the damage of wearing out the NAND flash .
