I am the type of person that hates having things running in the background that I do not need or do not know what they are. Is this FlexProvider process part of android OS or some type of app put in by TMO or LG? I have tried multiple ways of disabling it and uninstalling it but all lead to any internet based app force closing. Can anyone shed some light on this?
it's for data connection. you need it. thats all i know
Yeah I know that but what I'm trying to figure out is why. I dont remember it in any other android OS that iv had. Is it specific to this phone or 2.2? Like if we had a working ASOP build would it include it?
Did ever ever shed any more light on what this is?
I found these files in /etc/flex.. called flex.db and flex.xml. The flex.db contains the service provider details such as ..
Operator key, Nation, Operator, MCC, MNC, GID, SPN.
I really don't have any idea of why these db for !
I uninstalled it in gb and it doesnt cause a problem like in froyo.
HELP!!!! please
I deleted saved data from flex provider and now i cant do nothing, even put it in airplane mode because everything force closes.i didnt know what was flexprovider.....Please help me ..what to do...e mail me:[email protected]
Sounds like you shouldn't have a phone that multitasks....your prob wasting more battery and time trying to see what is always running than by just leaving things alone

Uninstalled it on v21a O3D and phone works like a charm. All internet and phone services are a go. Market skyfire stock browser opera facebook twitter all working just fine...
CIQ Client?
I wonder if it's LG's CIQ Client. I hope not. If you're unfamiliar with CIQ, google "Researcher's Video Shows Secret Software on Millions of Phones Logging Everything" (title of a Wired article). I'd post a link but new members aren't allowed.
It is none of that. It handles setting your phone up to work with specific carrier settings, such as what languages are available, default time zones, mms settings, etc. You know, boring stuff that is the guts of your phone. I think the system has defaults it uses if flex provider is missing in system/etc/flex/flex.DB.
It is certainly not ciq, and I would not delete it. Doing so may not overtly break things, but it could cause issues.
There hasn't been any evidence of Ciq on LG yet, but it is always possible. I'm watching the situation.

For almost 2 years I used a Touch Diamond. While WiMo is far from perfect in todays world with a bit of tweaking and some extra software I had a device that did what I wanted it to do. Sure, WiMo isnt what you´d call fast but as said, it did what it had to do.
For the past few days I´ve been using android with my new htc legend. I heard a lot of good things about android and that is why I decided to switch. But even after a few days I´m already having a feeling of regret. While android is very fast and finger friendly the OS/apps itself just don't cut it compared to WiMo. About 75% of the things I did on a daily basis with my phone just don't work (properly) on android.
Syncing mail with hotmail is a *****. It for example does not sync read messages so everytime I login with my pc I still have to click all new messages while I already read them on my phone. This worked perfectly with WiMo.
No automatic 3g disconnect. Now this isnt default on WiMo either but there are apps that just disconnect a idle data connection. Now android has a whole bunch of apps like juicedefender but they just dont work properly and are overcomplicated. Just disconnect if I don't use it. Thats all I want. Let apps and whatever connect when they want to and kill the connection when they are done. Simple you'd think but impossible on android it seems.
Youtube is a epic fail. In the exact same place, with the exact same simcard I just can't load a movie. They all stop after 3 seconds and don't load further. Also there is no option for always having HQ. The WiMo app had this and I could always load HQ movies without trouble.
But it gets even worse when it comes to much more practical things. The browser won't save exchange webmail login info. So now I'm expected to loging like 5 times a day to my uni mail by typing my info every time? Not nice.
And what about displaying agenda items? can't do that on the lockscreen. There are apps to do this but not on the htc sense one as far as I've seen. So I have to manually check my agenda which is just a ***** because I'm just to seeing things come up on the homescreen.
Also I can't login to the uni website. You should get a login popup but the android browser doesnt seem to be capable of this. Ofcourse this was no problem at all with a 2 year old browser... So now I can't check schedules and all.
Also there is no way to stream my favorite internet radio station.
Basically I pay 10 euro's a month for internet on my phone but all apps I regulairy use with internet don't work or only work a bit on android.
Don't get me wrong, I love the speed and all but what good is speed to me if I can't use most of the functions that are important to me? What is even more disturbing is that non of the things I want to do are very special. This should all just work but it seems to be far above what android is capable of.
Basically to me android is a disfunctional OS. If the above things would work, I'd love it but now all I got is speed, but no way of doing the things I want.
Nice try, but not quite it.

That's hardly Android error - it just seems to be a bug in the mail client app. Maybe yry another one?

It's not as simple as it sounds - android has to have an active data connection to enable IM messages as well as gmail imap notifications. Unlike POP3 e-mail accounts where you have to querry the server for new e-mails once in a while, gmail actually sends information to your phone when you get an email. And this wouldn't be possible if the connection was turned off.
And if you don't want to use gmail or gtalk, just disable background data in android's data sync settings and the 3g module won't eat your battery when unneeded. Don't worry, android is much smarter with power management than winMo and the fact that you didn't disable something by hand doesn't mean that it's eating your battery.
It's like GPS - even if it;s turned on in options/on power control wigdet the module isn't physically powered up until an app requests to use it. And when it's done the module powers down again. But still you see people disabling gps support in options after exiting maps believing that it will save some battery, or even requesting an app that would disable the switch on power control wigdet.
So just remember - it's a different OS, it has different rules and the fact that you did something by hand in winMo doesn't mean you have to do it here.

Again, this seems to be a problem with your rom/app version. I (and many other people) don't have any trouble with YT on android.
As for the HQ, it's turned on automatically when you're on wifi, on a gsm connection it defaults to standard quality. Personally i like this behavior but i agree that there should be an option to change that for people with huge/unlimited data plans.

Weird, but also not android bug, just the browser. You might want to try some alternatives (like dolphin, skyfire, opera mini)

Okay, and since when does WinMo display the agenda without any additional software? But i agree, htc really should make some "upcomming events" widget, and default android could use one as well. For now i use "CalWidget" and i know of "pure calendar widget" (paid). I don't know it they're compatible with sense but it may be worth a try

Well, seems to me that you don't really have a problem with android but you just got screwed by HTC and their customized version of android
If i were you, i'd just look for an unofficial rom. It might actually fix all your problems.
Also, part of your woes seems to be the fact that you knew winMo, knew the tweaks and apps you needed to make the device do what you want. Going over to android is a fresh start where you have to find out everything again. I know, i had similar feelings on a stock rom on my G1 after being a hardcore winMo user But after some research and grabbing a new rom and few extra apps android is way more functional than winMo for me and i don't feel like ever going back.
Just give it a chance and do some research.
Android platform has to mature a lot.
WM without xda is a hell.
You really need to find a new ROM. I've never had one single issue you're talking about.
Edit: And I'm using a myTouch running 1.6.

I know all that. But for me it does not seem to work perfectly. If I disable data connection always on (I never actually completely disable it), it still leaves it open. I checked overnight compared with just totally disabling it and it made a clear difference in the battery charge left. Its not like GPS where the icon actally dissapears when you don't use it but this doesnt happen with 3g so far as I can see it, it still uses more power than when disabling it.
I understand all the google stuff needs it, but I don't use any of it so for me its rather useless.

I reacherd a bit more and it seems to be a IIS and android problem. Wm and Iphone have the same problem but they just ignore the IIS message and continue. I tried Opera and it has the same problem. Btw, I think Opera on android is a long way off from Opera on WM. Still missing lots of functions I think.
IIS problem for the website login btw. Not sure why the exchange site doesnt save credentials but that seems to be misconfiguration. For example it wont even work on most desktop browsers either.

Maybe you are right. I know everything about WM and for me android still has a lot of things beneath its skin I don't know. If the apps I want exist I could fix some of my problems.
But some problems are just android related. The whole website thing is a combination of android and IIS configuration that don't play nice. Nothing HTC can do about this, nor can any custom rom. Its something google needs to fix. Ofcourse, if my uni would change their IIS settings it could also fix the problem but I don't think I can get them to change settings just for me.
For me that really needs to work because its a daily function for me.
Also I wonder if some things can be done. For example in WM you can just select to only use your provider. I still havn't found a way to completely disable roaming on android. Fortunatly its easy to prevent data roaming.
My phone is both unlocked and rooted. I couldn't stand the crap. I just froze it since all the apps I want install on the card anyway.
With this leak for Android (which Google is patching) is there any app or ROM that will make password entry required (no saved passwords - I don't save them on the computer, so it's no hardship)
I do have wifi calling, and I will use it over public wifi. I go to places where I get one bar at the most, and the motel has free wifi. I want my pet sitters and house watcher to be able to contact me at any time. My daughter moved to England, so I need Skype, and Skype only works on wifi on Android.
I don't use Picasa, sync the calendar, but I don't want my contacts to be bothered if that is what a hacker has in mind. There is no personal info saved on my phone. I also don't game. I don't watch movies.
Also, I would like a firewall. I have both Bing and Groupon banned in the firewall and in the hosts file. Bing is getting too far ahead of itself. It's allied with Yahoo and I do have a Yahoo mail account.
I use the phone as a PDA reference guide, and the processor speed and screen is why I bought it. I have frozen all the social apps and I might delete them. The phone has been working super since it's been rooted and I enjoy it.
Thanks,
Zuben
I am not sure what you are exactly asking?
You mention password entry? If you are talking about accessing the phone, there is the lockscreen that you can either password enable or choose a pattern to lock the device.
You also mentioned about a firewall? There is webroot security which you can manage things. But, you said that you blocked a few things already? I dont understand.

I want the apps to ask for a password - not the phone. If I use app market I want to log in every time - do not save the password.
Google mail and Tmobile I could stop from automatic sync. I don't want them syncing automatically unless it's a needed function.
Example: I got a list of updates today, and I can't block the ones I don't want.
There's one in the list for Youtube and Youtube is frozen. So is Facebook. So I didn't allow the updates.
So does anyone have a custom ROM or an app that does this? And where do you find info on webroot security?
Unfortunately the SGS4G is still in its early stages of development, there are a couple good roms out there but they are still stock and not custom, however they do improve the performance of the phone. As for what your asking for, no there are no roms that do this yet

Thanks, do you think there will be one?
How far can developers go to get rid of stuff?
I saw this:
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2011-05-09-emergency-alerts_n.htm
and I don't want it. Especially presidential alerts. I would guess that the final version isn't out yet, but I'm curious. I think it would eventually lead to abuse.
I buy my phones for my own reasons and use them in my own way, so I'm not your typical user. I see the phone as a PDA, only voice/text is communication.
The rest is all my required information at my fingertips, and the new screens and processors on the phones are great.
Recently I received a notice from Google saying that my account was accessed from Russia. I also recently installed a custom Android ROM onto my T-Mobile HTC HD2. I was thinking, pretty much anyone can take the Android OS, make a custom version, and release it for download, right?
If so, is it possible that the person who created the custom Android ROM also modified it so they could steal my personal information? I really do like the ROM I am currently using and would not like to switch if I don't have to, but this whole Google thing has me paranoid now.
I have had my facebook lock down a few times from that kind of thing. But never out of the country. Did you check if mock locations is enabled? Settings - Applications -Development. Not sure id that could be the issue, but it is possible it was your phone reporting as another location.
Sent by Supersonic!
Now Google has sent me a second notice, AFTER changing my password, so this is really starting to bother me. I tried changing that Mock Locations setting, but it was already disabled. Just to be sure I haven't entered any of my new passwords into my phone yet since this last incident and I'm going to see if I still have problems.

Are you sure google is sending these messages?
And does the mail contain a link for you to click on sayiong to change your password?
Alot of times the mail themselves are the scams. And are in most cases sent using the google account but from another server.
Could you copy paste the headers...leaving out your personal mail. In Outlook you can view this by opening the mail File->Info -> properties.
You should see internetheaders there.
Copy paste them. Dunno how to find them in Gmail havn't checked yet gonna see later how to view them in Gmail
Anything is possible, someone making a ROM could put whatever they wanted in there.
It's probably not the most likely way your account would end up compromised though, it could be anything from random hacking to malware on your PC.
Well, that's a good question. It's something that I wonder myself and that sometimes concerns me.
I have ESET antivirus installed and regularly do quick scans on my PC, but I suppose that wouldn't catch everything.
As far as the Google notice, it is not an email message. The notice appears in a red box with bold text at the top of my inbox when I sign into gmail, and I also checked the URL to make sure I was actually on Google.com.
I remember when I looking for ROMS to download, this particular build (can't remember the name) had the most thread views out of all of them at the time, so hopefully someone else would have noticed this issue by now if it was part of the build...
Anyways, thanks for your help. I'll try running an in-depth ESET scan to see if anything comes up.
I took it a step further and don't use any google account on my custom ROM at all. the less I rely on apps and cache data the better.
I always thought about that. Just me being cynical I suppose. Some of these deevs just do it for the love
I never thought of that before, maybe I should be more careful in the future..
Thank you gr8 idea...

What are you doing where you'd really need to worry about that? Just seems like using an android phone without a google account would be a pain.
Hi ppl in the xda hood
I just write to let you know that ChompSMS has now been flagged as malware, both on 2 phone here locally with Avast as scanner, and subsequently by upload to Virustotal, and flagged by some of the major names too.
This concerns both the 5.30 and the update from tonight to v5.31
As Im new, I cannot post urls, but you can dump the apk from both versions, upload for a scan, and have a look at the report yourself from virustotal dot com
XDA must decide if its worth it alarming the community, but better safe than sorry, right?
I guess it could be a false positive, and I do know things should not be rushed about accusations of malware developing, but seeing that several of the major scanners is flagging it both before and after the update, certainly raises my concerns.
I hope those of you who knows your way around decompiling and analyzing code will look into this, so that we can get more eyes on it than "just" the AV companies reports.
Sincerely, Omnius
After a bit of micro-investigating I have so far found these domains in the code, so if you do HAVE to use ChompSMS, (I do) you can ad them to your HOST file, just for the sake of it.
I dont know when or why they will be used but as they are in the code, there is a potential connection lurking in it. Decide for yourself, untill further ppl have a close look than mine.
Im not a dev of any sort, but I do know how to poke around to learn. Therfore please do not just take my words for granted until more competent ppl here have their say.
I do know that a few of these is for "normal" android app ads, and analytics and so on, but these are my finding so far, so filter our what you like it to connect to yourself. If you dont mind ads connections in-app, serve your wish, so to speak.

All of them appear to be valid to the program. Half are ad for ads, the other half are for functionality in ChompSMS.
I would be careful on using go SMS as well.
Antivirus apps will pick up any app that by passes any normal OS use. This always has been and always will be the case.
Anything with ads will always be flagged as it connects to an unknown server.

chomp was never flagged before the 5.30 update a few days ago...
really bothers me, i love chomp. i donated to remove the ads. i'm hoping they fixed it with 5.31 and the virus scanners are just still reporting it as a false positive. until it's sorted out though, i uninstalled...
Update : avg doesn't detect anything wrong with the newest version, 5.31.
Lemme tell you...
I noticed the new permissions requested in 5.30 (special access to browser history/bookmarks), and kinda shrugged it off. Dumb move on my part. Immediately upon launching 5.30, I get a notification from ADWLauncher that it cannot fit a new shortcut on my desktop (because the main page was full). So I'm naturally all like WTF... so I flip through my desktop pages to notice that ChompSMS had made itself a shortcut to searchmobileonline.com.
I also heard that it replaces your default browser home page and search method with the same. I use xScope exclusively, so I haven't been able to check that yet.
Delicious, Inc. has really crossed the line with this latest stunt. What were they thinking!? ChompSMS was the best Android messaging app IMHO. Why jeopardize such a great reputation? If it's money they were after, I'd imagine they could've raked in a nice bundle of cash for selling the product to another company.
Does anyone have a copy of this apk that I could take a look at?

I know this is a old thread but better than starting a new one.
I would like to ask if there is any news on this. I love chomp SMS, imo the best messanger for my taste. I have bought the pro version, to stay away from ads and unnecessary internet data. I have chomp on a brand new phone, no sim card, no messages, just activated chomp and my firewall instantly found chomp active on internet. I watched this for some time and really chomp was trying to do something even I did nothing with it.
important note: there is no data mining in any of their terms. Or at least I did not find anything.
So I contacted chomp about the behavior and they said that "they never seen this before" and suggested reinstall. I did, didn't help.
On the second try, they told me that it is connecting because of ads, but I had the pro version (and they knew it). So no luck.
After the third attempt, they said that chomp is sending once a day info that it is installed so they know how many installs they have.
This sucks a lot. Security concerns appears instantly.
I think it would be worthy to literally sniff a bit around this, since so many people is using chomp.
I am trying to figure out if my boyfriend is tunneling his messages or Facebook chat somehow... I'm not very techsavy. Does this kind of thing actually exist for a regular lg phone? Okay so It looks like whenever he unlocks his phone he will sometimes use two different codes like he has one phone two users. One he shows me without all his real incoming messages. And then his storage is always full on his phone but he hardly has any music or pics. He has some casino apps. One I found in his list said in the default app casino.imitation.app is that a vault app or what?
Yes it is possible. I don't know how lg has it implemented or what phone he is using, but there are multiple users in android that you can switch. If lg doesn't have that feature it could be done with a system modification. Since this a real life trust problem I suggest that you talk to somebody that can help, somebody like a psychologist.
