Hope posting this here is OK- I never get answers in Q&A...
I have made & modified themes for the SE stock 'rom' and as you know the framework-res and system apks do not need to be recompiled or signed when just exchanging images.
Is it the same for CM 6 'roms'?
I am looking into theming Wolfbreak's rom and noticed the framework-res that I'm using as a base says "signed by SignApk" when I open it in winrar.
Do I need to recompile & sign or not?
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
You dont need to sign regardless of OS if you are only swapping images for system files. But remember to use optimized pngs and zipalign as final step to minimize resources consumption.
If you are modding any resources.arsc you need to decompile to do that and recompile and sing accordingly.
Ok, thanks- just making sure... the winrar message threw me off...

If you are just using images I would say metamorph is the only option I know of that can replace files in .apk on the fly. Its not a flashable zip though.
Give this a try... this will port png's from one rom to another. you just need to pull the framwork-res.apk and resources.apk from framework from your rom and put it in the "new" folder. and put the same apk's from the theme you want to port in the "old" folder, both under the framework folder with in the "new" and "old" folders. and run the script.... there are also app folders for any themed apps that you want to port also.... same thing with those, yours in the new and the themed ones to port in the old.... Just remember, these are only png ports, you still need to do xml edits if there are any...
this is not my work, found it here on xda a very long time ago and don't remember from who but thanx to him or them......

Neither help, sorry. UOT can't change font colors in the menu and that cm7 thing is for images, again not for font colors in the menu.
Delete public.xml from res/values. It will regenerate while compiling.

Whatever's happening I'm getting errors on everything no matter what I try and I'm following the instructions.
Try compiling it ignoring the error messages then from the compiled apk, extract the files you modified including png and xml files, then from the original apk open it with winrar and paste the files you extracted previously.

Thing is its not compiling any apk.
Which tool are you currently using for compiling/decompiling?
Try extracting framework again, follow this
Yeah that is what I'm using.

Hi XDA
Im trying to make a battery mod for my HTC Sensation, but i need some help.
I have the framework-res.apk for my rom (Android Revolution HD) and 100 pngs.
I need help with compiling the stat_sys_battery.xml so it uses all the 100 pngs instead of htcs 7
I also need to know if its okay to just replace the files in the framework-res.apk using 7-zip, and replace that with the framework-res.apk in a working battery mod i downloaded, since i dont know how to make the update script
Thank you for you help

Sorry, but it's a bit more complicated than just opening the .apk in 7-zip or winrar. You need to decompile the .apk... the easiest way is to use a program called apk manager. Search on XDA, and you will find it.
Then, in the decompiled folder, you will have a /drawable/ folder. You need to re-code the stat_sys_battery.xml to include all the pngs, as well as the zzz_stat_sys_battery_1.xml.
In addition to the 100 pngs you already have, you will also need some charging animation icons and a stat_sys_battery_unknown.png icon that all match your battery icon theme.
After redoing the 3 xmls in the drawable folder, and replacing all the necessary pngs, you then need to recompile and sign your apk with the new files.
I've attached a sample of the 3 xmls for you to use as a reference.
If you are looking to get a battery mod the quick and easy way, then I have a bunch in a thread HERE. If you are looking to learn how to do it yourself (Which I highly recommend for the learning experience it will provide), then search around and look for some guides on compiling and decompiling to help you on your way. You can also download any of the battery mods from the thread I linked to, and decompile them for examples of a working framework-apk that has been modded.
Keep in mind, when experimenting with this, you ABOSLUTELY WILL cause your phone to not be able to boot up. Make sure you have a nandroid backup ready.
Good luck.
Thank you!
Wow, this is gonna take a bit longer than i though B)
Btw, i was using one of your mods, but i found that it wasnt smooth enough + the icon didnt have enough detail

Moderators, feel free to delete this post.
Good Start Man, Hope someone will advise very soon.
Thanks for your effort.:good:
Only de- and recompiling will not really lead to anything.
You have to solve each error here step by step. And as you can see there are many entries missing when recompiling against a framework from a different device and/or Android version.
This means that resolving the missing entries (like simply deleting them in each file) won't help because even if the recompile succeeds it will never run because of errors in the dependencies of the apk etc..
you should specify where you've changed
Tried almost everything but i cant get it working. Also tried VRTheme ZIP but it doesnt work too, it doesn't recognize the 9.png files and show the UI stretched... This is not my work, its for Not-i, Majdinj, Zai89 and other amazing themers for this amazing device (sorry if i forgot other users). I've seen it in S2 forums (Themes and Themed roms too) with the TW2013 UI for 4.1.2 so i dont think it will be very hard to an experienced themer. Thanks for the support. Good Luck to everyone!
You are compiling a a 4.2.2-based apk file with 4.1.2 installed framework, if you see in another thread they must have same version or it is themed apk file.
Can just use X-plore open apk as zip file n copy all the themes but not xml to another apk open as zip file.
not much changes wif just a framework.res.apk n options is alittle too small to fit it..
so no point to make a mod just framework.res.apk
@galaxynote2
The pictures in the attachment aren't useful!
If you want to change the png's, then take them from the original apk out!
Don't decompile it!
So, never use 9.png's from decompiled apk!
Try it again with the 9.png's from the original apk. Just copy them from the apk to your new one. Don't decompile it.
If you try to add some 9.png (from decompiled source), then they looks ugly with the vrtheme system...
(and can't build it with apktool too...)
@tkari4 thank you for the answer! I will try again now..

Not working, sorry never made something like that.
The solution for your problem:
Install the 4.2 framework-res.apk (command in the CMD window: apktool if c:/framework-res.apk)
Now decompile your 4.2 framework-res.apk
From the decompiled folders you can add the 9.png's to your 4.1 farmework-res.apk
Install the 4.1 framework-res.apk again
Build your apk and so must work...

@tkari4 some progress (attached files). That is my result putting the non-decompiled images in a vr-theme:
Popups are still bugged, 9.png resizing doesnt worked.
Action bars themes (Holo Light and Holo Dark) are now working!
Almost all buttons, checks and ticks are now converted and working.
What to do:
Fix the bugged popups
Convert Text fields (wich are 9.png too so its the same as the popups problems...)

So, first i need to install the recently downloaded framework in apktool and then decompile my 4.1.2 Note Framework?
Nevermind! Recompiled without problems! I've modified some pngs to se if it works and worked, so now im porting the fully theme. Thank you!

use
gingerbread/ics/jb 1.5.2
https://code.google.com/p/android-apktool/downloads/list
jb/kitkat/lolipop apktool rc3

use correct framework-res
plus any other framework eg tw-framework
Use Advanced APK Tools for decompiling the APK files and you can also use the Attached Dex Editor to edit classes.dex files.....
Advanced APK tools is specially made for Xperia devicex. (use your "framework-res.apk" to install firmware in Advanced APK Tools)
(Drag and drop classes.dex in "Quick-Baksmali.cmd" to decompile and drag and drop the output folder is "Quick-Smali.cmd" to recompile.
