[Q] What do I need to do? - T-Mobile LG G2x

What do I needed to do to start changing the look of my phone around?
I just rooted my device using one click, and removied bloat ware using titanium.
I am very new to this whole rooting thing.
But I have seen pictures of screens that look very different than mine, mine is stock... how do i start doing that?

check the "themes" section

You can also try difference launchers that are in the market. Go Launcher, ADW Launcher, Launcher Pro to name a few.

Make sure you've flashed the Clockworkmod recovery using NVFlash. After you do that try flashing The Eagle Blood or Cyanogen ROM's. Instructions for all of that can be found in the development section.

Coming from Captivate, flashing questions

Sorry if this should be in a different thread. Not trying to get flamed. So I am coming from a captivate and am just wondering how is flashing stuff on the inspire different from the captivate? Typically most of my flashing was just done thru CWM on the captivate itself or thru ODIN. I know ODIN doesnt exist for the inspire, but what differences can I expect coming into? how do I get to recovery or download? Any answers on how the flashing experience is different would be much appreciated
Once you've rooted it's pretty much the same as captivate install rom manager and install Rom with cwm recovery. There isn't a need to flash back to stock. Just clear data and cache.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
yup, clockwork mod makes life a hell of a lot easier.
And this restore a heck of a lot better than the captivate did. I don't even use titanium backup anymore. All my txt messages and apps automatically restores including wallpaper
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
Thanks guys, my only question is how to get CWM on this phone after root. Im assuming its thru a kernel?
same way you do it on the captivate get rom manager from the market. Install CWM Recovery.
There's no need for special recoveries like on the captivate as there's no lagfix craziness to deal with. HTC uses Android/Linux standard file systems

Totally agree, ill never get samsung again. I would probably flash a different rom on my captivate every other day to find out which one had what bugs and what didnt work correctly, lol. The Inspire is a lot harder to root then the captivate, but is well worth it when you do, for one roms are higher quality and all 100% working, even cm7 rc1. There is no download mode for inspire, you can manually boot into bootloader mode and from there you can enter CWM Recovery.
So i looked at the HTC hack kit, are there any better instructions for rooting? just didnt see anything laid out in that thread.
Another question for yall: On the captivate when wifi was active the 3g symbol would disappear. This doesnt happen on my inspire. Does that mean hspa is still running while im connected to wifi? Battery drain is my issue with this
there's a readme in the hack kit. Very easy to follow
There is youtube two part video walkthrough, thats what i used. I learn easier if i can see it happening.
Sent from Inspire 4G using XDA App
On the vibrant (captivate) a bad kernel or Rom could mean boot loop and no hope of getting into clockwork and we would have to use odin. This doesn't happen on the inspire?
Sent from my Inspire '4g'.
ive had boot loop happen twice so far and both times i manually went into boot loader and went to CWM recovery and wiped data and reflashed then everything was fine. The one time i reflashed and still got boot loop i just restored back up and then flashed and was good to go. I made a backup right after i rooted so i wouldnt have to do it again, i suggest you do the same just to be safe.

lol dont mind the hijacking. the more questions asked the better.
the market auto restores your apps when you sign in with your google account, i cant really explain how it does this, but it sure is nice.
when you check back up my settings when you sign into google for teh first time, it starts keeping a list of market apps you've installed and restores them if you do a factory reset. doesn't seem to catch all of mine all the time though.
still have some questions regarding Flash
I read the rooting thread as well as saw the video, what I could understand is that in captivate we were rooting and then upgrading the ROM.
But here we are rooting and the downgrading.. Are we loosing any functionality? Its little difficult to understand..
can someone pls help?
You are actually downgrading the ROM then rooting THAT. After you have root, and have clockwork mod recovery installed you can install any rooted rom you like. There are a few to choose from in the Dev section.
The current Android release on the Inspire hasn't been "cracked" yet so you need to downgrade to get root.

De-crippling the 2.2 Captivate (allow non-market apps)

does anyone know how to do this? i have used superoneclick, AIO captivate tools and OCD. nothing works
i have a rooted captivate running froyo stock
Backup your stuff and flash Cognition. Easiest way. You may want to stay stock, but trust me, it's much better.

I got it to work through superoneclick even though it failed the 1st 2 times I did it. I restarted the phone did the non market app fix and then restarted again and applanet worked. It is still a little buggy but it works.

I agree with flashing Cog.
However, I am currently trying to see how far I can get with the stock 2.2.
With that said, I used "SuperOneClickv1.7-ShortFuse" to root and allow non-market apps. If it does not work, remember to right click the .exe and run as administrator (if you are on Win7).
i want to keep it stock because of the just incase something happens and i need to use the warranty or insurance i want to get it back to stock in the matter of 2 clicks to backup all the att bloatware and unroot so i can send it in.
i know there is another method to flash back to stock but i dont really understand flashing different roms and kernels and want it to be as simple as possible. if i find a real need to flash a different rom and kernel i will learn more about it. im just not fully educated on much of this stuff.

Seriously, man, getting back to stock is as easy as that. All you have to do is download Odin one click, put your phone in download mode, click start, and bam, you're at stock. If you need me to walk you through flashing ROM's, I can later on today. It's not as hard as you think.
where do i download the rom for cognition
what are the pros and cons to cognition and the known bugs in it
why choose this over other roms? why not flash to 2.3.3?
will i have to re-download all of my apps and settings etc.?

[Q] My t959v is having a big problem. My tw launcher is gone? Need help asap?

Hello everyone. Merry Christmas! Well i left my phone on my bed and left it on bloatware removal. Sister wanted to come a game. didnt know how to get to the game press buttons and gone. No more tw launcher. Calls come in and out as well and messages. I rooted my phone with superoneclick. I thought i recover my phone. well i know i did. But i cant find the file. What should i do. I was thinking about using odin 1.7 and put [ROM-ODIN]T959VUVKB5 Stock + Root and see if that works. Hopefully that would put it back to normal. Or put gingerbread 2.3.3. I was wondering if anyone have fix this problem or have solved it. Any information help. Thank and have a wonderful day.
Factory reset?

Merry Christmas to you! Unfortunately, this sucks for a Christmas gift!
You will need to flash another ROM to restore everything. Maybe you can try pushing it through adb.
The easier way would be to flash a new ROM over it, although you would lose all your data.
You can flash over any Froyo ROM to fix it, since they all have a launcher built into them.
The same applies for GB, but if you're moving from Froyo to GB, you will need the bootloaders from the leaks or the official.
Everything can be found through the forum, so good luck!
I can create a cwm flashable that will restore tw for you.
Just let me know what ROM you are on and what your email address is.

what would you would be better. Flash it to gingerbread or go back to the old thing. When i have it on recovery. I dont have the option to look in my sd card. When i was in recover second time, before i could press anything. The android man pop up with a ! right next to him. i was like uh ooohhh. How do you do a factory reset. Would that work even tho my phone is rooted?
@jager555 If i get that cwm from yea. How would i put it in my phone. I got to put it in download mode?
Power down the phone and use the 3 button combo. Can you get into cwm?

And what i see in the clockwork mod folder a recovery check point. But when i go to recovery mood i cant get to it. The only option i have in this mode is. REboot system now,
reinstall packages, delete all user data, delete cache data. that is it. no factory reset nothing. I used superoneclick to help me root it. im still on froyo. If i do a kies mini upgrade. you think that would help. Or just use odin and put a different rom. Thank you for helping me man

Well the problem i was having when tw launcher went missing. I found a way to fix it so i can have my icon again. When one of my apps were due for a up date. i was able to make it to the android market. From there i was able to download either adw launcher or ex launcher. After i install ex launcher. I was able to open it through the Android market. And bang. It went into effect. And bang i didnt have a black screen anymore. Icon where there. I dont know what type of side effects will cause. but i will out after a few days of use. This is only a temporary till i grew some ball to change to gingerbread rom. lol For i am a noob. and trying to understand it a lil more. What are the benefit of gingerbread? One major benefit for me is getting my launcher bak. Well I hope this help someone out there. Hopefully i able to change roms in the future. Thank you for reading This and have a happy new year.

update phone first before custom ROM

ok, so i've read what i think i need to root and install a custom ROM (i think i want to try eagles blood 2.8 first http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124522)
just got my G2x on Monday and it has GB 2.3.3 but i have not checked if it has an update and not sure i want to update it first, but that is my question.
should i do an update first before i do anything else or does it even matter? i mean i will root, then do a backup, then install the ROM, right? so it shouldnt matter if the phone is the latest and greatest from LG or T-Mobile as i will be overwriting it anyway...at least that is how i think it works
also i have seen where people are saying to wipe everything (or at least a few folders), how is that done? just delete what is in the folders or is there a tool to wipe said data?
No OTA updates are available, but is unnecessary anyway. Also, no need to root if you want to flash these roms as they already have root access. Flash clockworkmod (search for the thread on that) then flash the rom you want. All the instructions are there.

thanks, i didnt even want to try the update, but since you said there isnt one, i tried and sure enough, i have the latest already

No need to root before nvflashing cwm.
Yes, OTA is "over the air". And just so you know, make sure you follow those nvflash steps EXACTLY as written. What you are choosing to flash, however, is the completely stock (although rooted) version of android 2.3.3 that you already have on your phone. This is fine, but after you get cwm you can flash any custom rom you find within the development section as well. I recommend at least choosing cm7 because the stock rom sucks.

This one. It's actually linked as the first step in your thread. This is the important one. Read it over a couple times first, and maybe watch some videos too.
Everything after that step in your thread is basically how to flash a custom rom. They are just choosing a rooted version of stock as their example.

root first if you want to backup any of the apps on the phone.
i rooted , clockworked , backed up the phone then copied the int and ext sd roms to my pc. installed titanium and backed up all the apps in the stock rom i thought i might want to keep. ( mostly the nova demo and need for speed) . copy your rom contents over so if you mistakenly format your sd card you can still return the phone to stock. ( don't ask i did it ) tryed cm7 stable. liked it but had sleep of death issues. returned the phone to stock . messed with the stock apps and root explorer backed everything up again. and now im ruing weapon r and love it. no stutter and smooth as a hot knife going thru butter and no sleep of death! and USB works every time. even love the loader he used.

i put eagles blood 2.8 on it and it seems to be doing ok.
couple of things, dont know if this is a theme issue, but it no longer says 4G, it has a letter H instead
also i moved the notification bar to the bottom but cant remember where to change that back to the top
that looks good. don't for get to copy off the internal and external sd chips and keep that data safe. when you made your backup in clockwork it stored it on the internal chip. titanium by default i be leave uses the external. if any thing goes wrong, as long as you have access to those backups and can boot to clockwork you can get your phone working.

Yeah that's it. How are you liking the rom? Bear in mind that now you have root access you can do all sorts of customizations. You can flash kernels that allow for overclocking or underclocking, use titanium backup (recommended) to preserve all apps and app data, modify boot animations and status bar icons, basically anything you want. Enjoy!

No. Sense is not just an app. Its built into the framework of the OS itself, and is incorporated into many aspects of the OS. Deleting the app called HTC Sense will likely result in erratic behavior of the phone, or stop it from performing correctly. Is there a specific aspect of Sense that you want to remove, and if so, why?

Yes, you can freeze the Sense launcher, but it's potentially risky. If something went wrong with Apex, say with an update, then you have no backup launcher and no way to operate the phone. You would need to reflash your rom. It will also kill all the Sense functions.

Not "may", uninstalling the launcher will absolutely break your lock screen shortcuts.
You can try this. But I recommend making a nandroid first, in case things get screwed up. And don't know if uninstalling the Sense launcher will break other things.

How much easier do you need it to be? Especially on a custom ROM, just use the power button option to boot into TWRP, then one tap and a swipe, and its backed up.
I'm assuming you mean apps like ROM Manager and the like. All they do is automate the process a little, but the phone is just doing the same exact thing in the background (booting into recovery and doing a nandroid from there). You also should be careful, in that such apps are often expecting CWM to be your recovery or may assume you have a international One X. If such is the case, the nandroid backup might not work, or you can even do irreparable damage to your phone.
Much safer to leave such apps alone, and just backup in TWRP.
