[Q] Some rooting Qs - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Although I am new to rooting the TF I am running a rooted HTC Desire, so am familiar with the rooting process on android. But I have some questions about the concept on the TF:
Is firmware different to standard ROM updates?
Can the ROM, firmware and Radio ROM be updated independently of each other (is there a Radio ROM like on a phone)?
If you root your TF and falsh a custom ROM, do you no longer get the firmware updates from ASUS?
Given how new the TF is and how many problems there still are which need to be fixed by firmware, is it risky to root now and potentially lose firmware updates which fix bugs (eg trackpad/keyboard freezes)?

anyone? any help with the above questions?

Sometimes it helps to search.
Bug fixes will be put into the ROMs just like the past.

[Q] Used Xoom, rooted and ICS

Hi All,
A few questions about my xoom, but first here are the details
-Canadian Wi-fi Xoom, but flashed to USA for ICS update
-Rooted of course, I see Rom Manager, CWM, and Adfree as programs the previous owner has added.
-Looks like stock rom: Android 4.0.3,
-Kernel 2.6.39.4-gf03a679 , [email protected]#1
-Build number IML77
Since I am new to this, and my android education will come to flashing and optimizing my setup, should I change anything about what I currently have?
So far everything seems to work properly, would I be able to accept OTA updates without risk of bricking things?
Seems the previous owner removed his account info, but would I have any security concerns from things he may have left behind?
It seems I am going to spend more time learning the platform than actually using it, and this greatly interests me. I thank all in advance for your help.
Cheers
Canadian owner here also
Official OTA's will not install on a rooted device, as for security concerns. You could always do a fastboot erase userdata/cache/system reinstall an official motorola from (available on their website).
Use the universal root for Xoom, flash the recovery and use one of the currently available rom (rogue, EOS, Alfonso). Im pretty sure any left over from previous owner will be gone by then!
Pretty much all of it explained in the thread: Xoom Heaven: Rooting, Roms, Kernels... You Name It!
That's just me tho!
Or just flash the correct EOS nightly (wingray) followed by the newest GApps (10.5).

OTA updates on rooted Galaxy S Relay?

Hi all,
I recently rooted and installed a custom recovery per Jay Dogg's guide in the Galaxy S Relay. Development forum. I kept my stock ROM by choice and recently ready up on the recent Jelly Bean OTA update (MC5). I'd like to update but the official OTA update states you can't be rooted. I downloaded the update via Settings/About phone/update. Upon choosing to update, the phone rebooted to my custom recovery. It stated the certificate on the package was invalid so I backed off and just rebooted. I'm guessing my options are :
- Revert to an unrooted stock ROM, update to 4.2 (MC5) and re-root.
- Attempt to apply the official OTA update via custom recovery despite its complaints of certificate issues.
- Apply a non-stock or ripped ROM (not preferred at this point)
Can someone help me? I would like to avoid the hassle of unrooting, but that's probably my best option as far as I can tell. Any feedback is appreciated. I'm happy with the stock ROM's stability for now and don't really want to deal with the bluetooth / camera issues present builds of custom ROMs have.

[Q] [NOOB] Flash a 4.4.2 custom rom over a 4.3 firmware ok?

I had some trouble rooting after I first did a 4.4.2 OTA. So I downgraded to 4.3 and got root and installed TWRP without any trouble.
So from a 4.3 firmware I went to Cyanogenmod (Android 4.4.2). Is that ok ? Or do I need to upgrade radio, boot or other parts that dont come with a custom rom? In other words: is a (rooted) 4.4.2 firmware a precondition for installing alternative 4.4.2 roms?
Well, everything might not work perfectly as many things (though little) changed from 4.3 to 4.4. Yup, most of those things (radio, etc) change, flashing a cm11 rom wont change those and cm will most likely need them. Better to upgrade to 4.4. Also, does ART (new kitkat runtime) need anything new from kernel or anything? I don't see anyone who seems to have tried this and might mostly not work.
Also, What root trouble did you have? Easier to solve that issue than deal with any new issues that might arise from this.

Thanks. I will look into that. The kernel is included in a ROM though wright? So that wont be an issue I guess... But just to be save I'll flash 4.4.2 firmware and start from there. My problem was I actually got root, but flashed custom roms always got stuck in the boot animation. The thread on that is here.

[Q] Firmware update

What would be the best way to update to the latest firmware? Also have some other questions.
1. Would updating my ROM to the latest version which I believe has the new firmware actually update my firmware or just my ROM?
2. Where do you get the latest firmware at and or is it safe to flash it?
3. Any benefits from it? Performance or stability?? Maybe even fixed compatibility?
4. Would it affect my S-OFF/B-Unlock at all?
5. Would it cause any incompatibility issues for a 4.4.2 ROM which isn't based off of the 2+ firmwares? (this question may be flawed idk)
6. Worth it and is there any reason not to that I'm not aware of?
7. Would the newer firmware even work on a 4.4.2 ROM which it isn't based off of?
Sorry ahead of time if this has been asked before or is incredibly stupid. This sort of crossed my mind when trying a mod and figured I would give it a go if everything checked out. (i.e why I made this thread, to confirm or disprove my ideas/thoughts)

Flashing a Rom won't update your firmware. You have to flash it using fastboot and it won't do anything to your unlocked boot loader or s-off status. Tigerstown has a thread with the latest firmware but we haven't had an update since April so I would assume you're already on it. Also, newer firmware is backwards compatible.

how can i stay up to date with my rooted note 12.2

I have successfully rooted my note 12.2 - thanks to this awesome forum.
With that I can't do OTA or use Kies to stay up to date. So I'd like to know how I can stay up to date as Samsung releases new firmwares? For example I just downloaded the newly released 5.0.2 from Samobile and flashed it with Odin 3.09. That went well but of course it wiped my machine so I'm starting fresh again. I'd like to be able to stay up to date with out a complete re-wipe each time if possible. Thoughts?
As a long time root user I can tell you that the cardinal rule is that one should give up the notion of getting OTA updates for good once one roots for the simple fact that with each major OTA update comes the risk of losing root forever should the update lock the doors on the exploit used to gain root to begin with.
Casual root users are best served by watching forum threads after updates are released to see how more experienced users are fairing with getting their devices up to date. The exception to this is if a custom ROM is installed and the developer updates the ROM periodically to integrate the updated software or features that the device manufacturer releases. Even then, if a major update is released that let's say jumps to a new system like kitkat to lollipop there's a chance that a full wipe can't be avoided. ROM developers typically warn users when clean installs are required, and some even distribute their own OTAs.
I'm a religious user of titanium backup, and I will often dirty flash a ROM update or use prior titanium backups to restore data but this can be risky business when major updates are released because if software or drivers change from one major firmware release to another a backup of a particular application may no longer be compatible and stability may be affected upon restore.
Bottom line, if you want lollipop on your note pro, rooted, can live with the current bluetooth issues and want to be able to update further easily while retaining root then go with a custom ROM like civs and just monitor the thread of that ROM for updates.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the excellent advice. One two more more question on the topic. I had root on KitKat, but after flashing the new stock Lollipop via Odin, I lost root. So after installing the stock Lollipop I had to re-do the root flash via Odin to get root back, thankfully it all worked out. (Lollipop is awesome BTW).
Questions:
1. Was I in danger of forever losing root as you state above or was this a safe route? I understand that OTA and even Kies can make me lose root forever, but what about flashing a stock via Odin?
2. Are you saying that next time there's an update I could try to dirty flash the ROM via TWM (after doing a good backup via Titanium of course)? Basically find ROM on samobile, download, copy to SD card and dirty flash away using these suggestions: https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/sthr8/dirty_flashing_what_it_is_and_is_not_lets_set_the/
Typically to keep root the stock recovery is replaced with a custom one, TWRP is the main one used for our device. Stock updates from Samsung downloaded as OTA will typically fail to flash in TWRP. Odin flashing stock images will erase everything including the custom recovery, thus causing loss of root. In other words you'll typically lose root one way or another and the key to retaining it is to not blindly update until a root method is ensured for the next version of firmware. Resign to the fact that with each update you will temporarily lose root and need to redo it. Plan ahead, wait for root confirmation and then update with a plan of how to get root again.
I typically don't TWRP flash stock so I don't know if it works but in the distant past I recall that it wouldn't so thus I never try. Maybe someone can confirm. For me I haven't updated firmware on my note pro for a year now and I am not missing anything. ..
