Epic come close? - Captivate General

Anyone with a cappy ever tested the epic? Is it too bulky? Is atleast as good as the cappy? See i need customer service thats reliable (already had sprint,i get them to do what i want ) and with simple mobile on my cappy i have already changed my number due to people calling it because someone else in my town already had that number. So i changed it and now theres morw people calling over and over even after i tell them they have the wrong number. Anyways, any tips would be great. Also who has had verizon? Is there service worth the price? Droid incredible 2 ok?

I had a cappy and yeah the epics (sph-d700) bulkier but the reason i switched was cause i dropped my cappy and the lcd cracked. Dropped my epic bunch of times and its fine. Both had otterbox cases so go figure. I do get some comments that my phones big but the case adds some mm's in thickness. Just overall feels sturdier than my old cappy.

why don't you just list those numbers on your auto-reject list?

What about battery life on the epic? My cappys battery life is always hit and miss. Sometimes i get 16 hours with heavy use and other times i may get 12 with moderate use.

You do realize that with any carrier any number could have belonged to someone else and the same situation can show its head.

does the epic even have 2.2 yet? on the cappy we can run 2.3 samsung roms for the i9000. the launcher on the epic i used was not configureable, and switching launchers breaks the samsung widgets. this is why i use touch wiz. i cant be bothered finding replacment widgets in the market for everything. i guess you can pull a twlauncher with landscape added from the i9000 forum like the one from gtg. other than that the mms app didn't have contact lookup and multi select. you had to type names. it seemed to be a big pain to send out bulk mms. also there was no way to add contacts to groups in the phone, i thought of that as a way to send out bulk mms but then found that i couldn't do that either. you had to do it with your google account. i don't sync to google so that's annoying. i guess it could be edited in kies full by importing the vcard then clearing your contacts and moving the edited vcard back but i dont know if kies full works on the cdma phones.
the issue with it not having 2.2 is a lack of source code, you wont have the level of development seen on the gsm varients. although you can easily get 2.3.4 with cyanogen mod you have to decide if aosp is what you want. i personally dont like aosp as much as i like the samsung software packages.
all in all the epic is a decent phone but has really ****ty software out of the box. though some of that can be changed the selection is not as good as on the captivate.

The Epic is nice. (Physical QWERTY FTW!) lol.
Wanted that instead of the Cappy at first. But sadly, it's a CDMA/WiMax exclusive phone.
Would have loved to see a GSM variant of it released.

Actually the Epic has 2.2.1, so yes, it does have 2.2.
And I don't think the Epic has as many ROM's as the Captivate for 2.3, but the Captivate and the i9000 are the only phones that have a ton of 2.3 ROM's anyways (The Vibrant has a few, but not many).
BUT, no-one's going to get the Epic on Sprint now that the Nexus S 4G is released, 2.3 stock. Beats any SGS phones anyday.

I meant official 2.2 or 2.2.1 if it does it id news to me. But anyway if it does do the launcher and mms apps still suck? i know those can be changed but im sure there are other apps that suck as well.

I work with someone that has an Epic, and there is an official 2.2 update out there. He installed it OTA, and it bricked his phone. He's now on his 3rd Epic due to the brick on his first one and a problem with his screen flickering and turning off randomly on his second. He's now getting by on 2.1, but it keeps bugging him to update. I've pointed him to the Epic forums on XDA, but so far he's not confident enough to try custom ROMs, so I can't share any anecdotes about that.
I feel kinda bad b/c my love for my captivate inspired him to get Sprint's sgs, and he's had nothing but trouble. Maybe if he has to return it again Sprint will let him get another model.

it's funny because i speak to a senior cdma systems engineer for samsung on an unrelated forum. im half tempted to tell him he's blowing it but i know alot of the downfalls of the cdma galaxy phones are decisions made over his head and poor carrier cooperation.

Well since sprint requires a credit card,im screwed. Im thinkin about the fascinate but then again theres rumors of a ton of new phones comin to verizon. Ugh,stuck between a rock and a hard place

the gharge was supposed to have been released already. but problems with the lte network caused them to hold it back. if you want a galaxy s like phone that's the one to get on verizon. though there may be a cdma varient of the sgs2 coming as well. ther is also the continuum which has 2.2 and a smaller screen but there is no development that i can tell going on with it.

I love blackberry form factor, but hate the operating system. So the droid pro seems like an ok idea but going back to 3.1 inch screen from 4,is.impossible lol. Not to mention I'm sure it lags. Damn decision making is too hard

I should rephrase myself.
The best SGS phone currently released to CDMA U.S. carriers.

I have an Epic and we do have official 2.2.1. Not as many Roms, but that's because the ones we have work well. Gingerbread is mostly officially finished on Epic with 1 Rom leak. It's a great phone and the hardware keyboard makes life easier.

Should I Trade for a SGS4G?

You guys think development will ever rise up for this phone? I'm thinking of trading my myTouch 4G for this thing because I love AMOLED and the hardware quality of the SGS series. But with the development of the MT4G booming I'm not sure if I should pull the trigger.
Anyone regretting getting the SGS4G as supposed to a Vibrant with it's booming development?
Its coming up fast. New Rom's and themes are popping up almost daily now. Choices of modems, kernels, tweaks, etc....
Imo, grab it up! Its gonna be a fun ride and you'll have the chance to be in the front seat
This phone is lightning fast, download speeds are out of this world, and the development, yet still young, is going to take off like a rocket....and I think soon.

Yeah that's what I'm hoping man. Just that I've been so used to GB these past couple months I'm a bit weary to go back to 2.2, hopefully ext4 kernels will come to this phone soon so that GB ROM's will work on this phone. I'm one of the 10 people in this world that actually like TWiz, lol. So I hope GB TWiz can come soon.
I still think this is a great phone and yeah the screen is pure awesome. As long as you know what you are getting in to, and you want the features the sgs4g offers you should go for it. This is a pretty great community starting up around here and lots of mods and things already available. We will have gb eventually (might be a while but hey) and if its twiz you like--thanks to Whitehawkx--we even have a port of twiz 4.0 from the galaxy s2 available!

but yes, I would defintely say make the trade. Only thing I hate is not having a flash.

Yeah. I love my myTouch 4G. Has everything and I do love Flash. But I just like Samsung's build quality better. I'm one of the 5 people in the world that prefers plastic over the myTouch's metal, lol.

the SGS4G supports adobe flash; it doesn't have a physical flash for the camera. while the "night mode" really does do an excellent job, there have been times i've wished for an actual flash.
my GPS works near-flawlessly. personally, i feel the hardware is so superior to the mT4G that the (current) fewer ROM options is a worthy price. super AMOLED is every bit as spectacular as advertised.

Has the 1GB of internal memory ever affected you? I'm worried about that because I have about 70 apps installed and still have about 500mb's free on my MT4G, so I don't wanna have to go back to the G1 days where I have to worry about apps2SD. I know it's a problem with stock GS4G ROM's. But do the rooted ROM's create more internal memory?

i haven't run into any issues. froyo allows the moving of apps to the SD. some apps themselves don't support it, but not enough that i've come close to running into the limit. i have around thirty apps installed, though... so your methods may vary.

I'm making the same jump from a mytouch 4g to this simply because my LED flash burned out and this is my 3rd replacement so I'm just ditching it I want something different. At least with this phone I won't have to worry about the flash burning simply because... there is no flash
But in all honesty I hope that this phone can keep up with the speed of my mytouch 4g. I'm going to miss gingerbread but hopefully this phone will get it soon! The screen looks amazing on youtube, I might walk into tmobile and see how I like this phone. Hopefully it doesn't disappoint.
If speed and responsiveness are your main concerns let me tell you...this phone flys. And lots of tweaks to make it even snappier. Of all the things you might worry about on the sgs4g--speed is not one of those things lol.

Proud owner of G2x

So yesterday I went into the store to play a little with the sensation and man I'm glad I got a G2x since release date and not waited for the Sensation. It felt slow all over the place and I compared everything with my G2x.
My G2x felt super smooth while the sensation was feeling laggy and stuttery.
Quadrant scores ( Rounded numbers)
Sensation - 1900
G2x - 2400 (Running stock)
The screen was the biggest dissapointment, The screen was all washed out, and with a yellowish tint. I was hoping to see a major improvement with the higher resolution but didn't compare at all against our phone.
So overall I didn't like the Sensation over the G2x and is not even a match when It comes to speed.
I am a proud owner of the G2x.
Hopefully they start selling the G2x soon. I am pretty sure T-Mobile will be marketing the G2x much more once they release the gingerbread update.
My advise is that you go to your T-Mobile store and try them both and decide for yourself.

Thats it, best answer !! ....Several people have called this out. Go try it. If you like it...buy it. Good for you. If you don't, then good for you. Reasons for buying or not buying anything are between you and yourself.
Please feel free to not share those reasons....privacy laws and all...I'm sure you understand...
Yeah, I understand.
And don't get me wrong, Sensation is a good phone, just like you said, if you like it buy it if you don't, don't buy it. Lol

In my opinion, the G2x, right now, isn't ready for the general public. I think it is a good thing they aren't selling them again until GB comes out.
For me, the phone is a beast. I'm not afraid to root it and start ripping out crap that causes problems or flashing custom software or patches. The phone, completely stock, suffers from crappy programming.
Thats one thing that kills me about Android. I LOVE android but manufactures dig their own graves. Google should hire the CM team officially and make all phones require AOSP drivers. I mean the Nexus One still gets official updates from Google. If Google hired the CM team to work on making phones compatible with AOSP roms, then all phones could get pushed stable updates the way Google pushed updates to the Nexus phones.
See right now, manufactures have to build roms around their drivers. If all phones were made compatible to the same set of drivers then we wouldn't have this fragmentation crap.
They need to make the overlays just additional installs.

At first I was getting the random reboots but that hasn't happened in over a month. I can honestly say.. this phone is simply incredible.

[Q] G2x, SGSII or SGS4G?

Alright, I currently own an SGS4G and i love it but i feel as the development is very limited. While i appreciate all of the work that the devs have put in, I have noticed that other phone have a lot mor development and it doesn't seem as though our development community has that [email protected]$$ attitude that the community of other phones does. So, would it be wise to look at getting a G2x or an SGSII (if the US gets it)? I know @birgertime and @Krylon360 both have and develop for the G2x and I love Trigger and Bionix. So is it matbe time to look elsewhere?
First off I'm not gonna be one of those lil trolls saying "oh the devs put their heart out on their developement" type of deal. So imma say go for the SGSII cause its bigger, media powered, and will soon be more known than the iphone. G2x is just gonna be a phone that's know to us phone fanatics. SGSII is gonna be revolutionary...

But is it going to be released in the US? And thank you for not trolling, like i said, i love the devs for all of the work they put in, especially seeing as Krylon and birgertiome didn't have SGS4Gs of their own to model off of
I'm not impressed with my G2x, but it does have decent hardware. In my opinion, the battery is too small, it gets warm too easily, and what has really begun to bother me is it seems like data seems to stop working randomly; it'll look normal and show that it is sending info, but won't receive data for a minute for no reason. It did this on stock, and now on cm7 rc1. Not a deal breaker, but definitely my reasoning for using my sgs4g as my daily driver over it.
The processing power is great, development is good, and it's a good "feeling" phone to hold, but it definitely doesn't seem as easy to dev for as your typical vanilla android phone.

IF you decide to swap out I would forget about the g2x. Wife had it and it was just bad. I'm sure the us will get the sgs 2 but you may want to have a look at the Hercules that is coming as well.

You realize there is only 5 of us that develop for this phone right 2 of which dont actually own the devices.
Team Whiskey Krylon and Dr Honk
Team Acid Myself Desexton BlackPHenoix and a few others

Also the theme rs
Fire under our asses you do realize most of us have jobs and real lifes We do this as a hobby spend quite a few hours doing this and days and weeks if not longer and dont even get paid for it.. You want development At least its not a side kick they got one rom.
The other phones u speak of are international versions minus the gx2 which has a larger dev community.
So please before you spout that kinda stuff look at whos deving for the phone you are using before you make comments like that thanks

Been a comp geek for a # of years and have recently began learning how to dev for android phones. I own the sgs4g and I absoluteabsolutely love it. I am fascinated by the outsoutstanding work the developers have produced on this phone thus far. I've read every post and have not ever had one problem flashing anything. I for one am extremely grateful for, not only the work put in, but also the vast knowledge that has been posted. These have become a shortcuts or fast tracks for me in learning how to develop and helping me to avoid some pitfalls that these guys have so gratuitously posted huge street sighns for us to read. Thanks guys.

I'd personally wait for the Galaxy S II. The performance is said to be greatly improved, and the reviews for it are beyond belief (meanwhile it isn't even in the US yet.)
The G2X does seem to have quite a few bugs, and the battery life is said to be even worse then the GS4G.
What I'd do is either switch to Verizon and get the Droid Charge, or wait for the Galaxy S II.
Again, I can wholeheartedly say the developers for this phone have done some hard work, and need some well-deserved praise.
Raver, he never meant his post to be rude or to insult developers like yourself in any way.

Geez dude, kinda on the sensitive side there. He said he respected you guys and meant no harm in his comment.
As for the OP's questions, the SGS2 is the obvious winner but who knows when it will come to the US. Sucks that even Canada is getting it first. If I were you, consider the Sensation. I like Samsung's hardware 10x better than HTC's but since you love development then I would chose that phone. CM7 is going to be awesome on there. And since it's HTC you will most likely get a plethora of AOSP ROM's, Sense ROM's and MIUI ROM's for you to constantly play with.
But anyways, I love the SGS4G, wish I owned one. But you're right, development will most likely be scarce for this phone for a while so that's something to think about.
Good luck!
Hercules all the way. I love my SGS4G.
My friend and my uncle and aunt all have the G2X and nothing but issues with it. Overheats and shuts down and have to pull the battery sometimes while charging. Random reboots. I had my friend flash Bionix on it and he was having a couple issues with it. It seemed to drain his battery much quicker than stock and had a couple other issues with it. He didn't want to try any other ROM for it cuz I told him Bionix should be the best one. I might flash my uncles G2X to see what the issues are again. My friend forgot what they were besides the battery drain and he used Green Battery & later Juice Defender and it didn't help. He still gets random reboots once in a while. Or won't power on from sleep/lock and have to pull the battery.
Thanks to all the devs support in our community and other communities as well. I'm a flashing fiend lol.
I couldn't recommend the sensation anymore than the g2x. It has just as many issues; some people are actually selling their sensation to go back to the g2x. Both are fast, both have issues, more development currently for the g2x. The sensation is a better looking phone though
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
The Sensation is badass. Even with a locked bootloader and no development it's insanely fast once you replace the Sense UI.... etc. Higher resolution, better feel in your hand...blah blah blah. As far as picking a phone goes... just avoid anything that uses nVidia. If you do that you should be okay. I found it ammusing to hear of screen bleed and jittery displays... after their company's desktop video cards went through the same type of issues. haha. nVidia = FAIL
but again... i'm just a guy in the forums.

Yeah so far the speculation shows that each carrier will be getting a Samsung Galaxy S2 variant. The T-Mobile one hasn't come up and some ppl think it might be the Hercules but no one really knows (most people think the Hercules is similar to the Infuse because of screen size and processor)
I hope what I said was correct.

Great phone, few annoyances
Overall I think it's a great phone, with a lot of potential. The battery life blows the Epic out of the water, the reception is WAY better, and the keyboard is amazing once you get past the initial learning curve.
Even the stock ROM is not that bad.. My only real gripe is the lack of any toggle buttons in the notifications menu. That drives me insane, I use those constantly and HATE having to go into the settings every time I want to turn anything on or off.
I am, however, eagerly awaiting a root method and some custom ROM goodness. Which will quite easily take care of the majority of my gripes (besides the non-removable battery).

I hated that damn epic. this phone is superior in every way. contrary to the "bigger is better" hype, I like the size of the phone. It fits nicely in my hand and I don't have to be a contortionist to get my fingers across the screen. the only issue I have to complain about so far, besides the lack of toggles, is that if you have head phones or a bluetooth device connected, the notifications play thru it instead of the back speak. But that could user error on my part.. It isn't that much thicker than the original Photon. I'm holding them both in my hands right now and the weight isn't that much different either, especially for a slider. I'm not in to much of a hurry for any custom roms. but it would be nice to have root. I'm sure shabby or one of the other great devs will have that taken care of soon enough...

There are other alternatives, just giving 1 example.
So far, my thoughts on this device are that it is amazing! This could just be because i'm upgrading from a DROID Eris from Verizon, but this device does just about everything right!
The keyboard is by far the best one I've used on a mobile device, its very tactile and the back light is bright and adjustable. The phones performance is top notch, no lag in apps or just scrolling around. I've even gotten my ps1,n64,and gba emulators running great with keys mapped to the keypad
My internet browsing experience is been quite good, even though I'm still using sprint's 3g network, all websites load up quick and are smooth.
The screen looks fantastic, although it isn't full HD, colors are vibrant and watching videos is great on the phone. Overall, i am VERY pleased with the device so far, and i cant wait to see what developers have in store for it!

I just tossed the power control widget that's included on my home screen. While you can't get to it from everywhere, it's only one button away.
The only thing about this phone that I truly do not like is notification light. I don't like green XD

Better than the Galaxy S III?
So, the question for me is how does it compare to the Galaxy SIII?
Well the sg3 was out because samsung does not update crap. So I was leaning towards the htc evo lte when I heard about the photon q. Sometimes I have to compose some sizable emails for work and the touch typing can get pretty frustrating in those situations, so I end up using my epics keyboard a lot. Even thought about getting the htc and a blackberry just for emails for work

i did actually, froyo came a little slower but i understand why, back then AOSP was really closed off towards just the nexus one. you want proof in that look at how long it took from eclair to froyo vs froyo to gb, samsung had based the nexus s off its samsung galaxy line so it was able to know how to have the code work on the humming bird a hell of a lot sooner. in fact the gingerbread update was posted the day ICS was announced, thus making the epic only 1 update "behind". granted its two now but its also past its two year mark (or rather tomorrow it will be, i remember picking mine up on august 31st 2010 launch day)
the epic 4g touch launched with gingerbread not that long ago it got ics and will prolly get jellybean someday. sgs3 launched with ICS and the tmo version already has leaks of JB, meaning it will prolly happen soon.
now lets compare that to the photon (im sure a few other moto phones fit this bill) launched with 2.3.4, after 7?8? months got an update to 2.3.5 instead of ICS, ICS is coming later this year which means it will only be one update behind until Key Lime is released this november, what do you think the odds are of the photon getting jellybean officially? so as of this november it will be 2 behind and stay that way, considering photon owners are 1 year into their 2 year agreement for that device doesnt leave a lot of hope.

I still use it as my main...and only...device. Hahaha! I will be getting a Zeki Jelly Bean 4.1.1 tablet soon for my multimedia content. I already found out how to root it and make it look like a Nexus 7. Why not get a Nexus 7 you may ask? Lack of a microsd card slot. I'll be getting a 32 Gigger with it.
Anyway, I agree. It would be nice to see something other than Froyo on this thing. I'll be moving to AT&T later this year and getting myself either a Nexus or LG Optimus, I'm sure by that time there will some nice Key Lime Pie phones....I won't get a Galaxy after being burned by Sammy.

Yeah. The Nexus is nice. I like it much better than the Note 2. Still, there are times when a physical keyboard is an absolute must...I wonder how bhundven is doing.
I just started repairing one my friend had. Seems it has a power issue and I am following some instructions I saw somewhere here.
Still using it atleast till this xmas when I can switch carries an not have to pay 600 to remove one of 3 lines

My contract runs until Christmas, so I'm stuck with this phone. It was a decent phone for its time, but its time is way past. I can't believe T-Mo never updated it to GB. I will never buy another phone from them again.
BTW @RicAndroid thanks for continuing to put out ROMs for this phone. I guess once you get your tablet we won't see anything else for the SK4G from you, eh?
Well...I'm hoping Dizzle1 from androidforums lends a hand with creating a new kernel. If that happens, I'll release a combination of all the roms into a new version of Glorious Overdose. Ay0teddy deserves more than to have his classic rom remain in limbo.
The tablet will be just for multimedia content. Movies and ebooks look horrible on the SK4G. I only plan to root it to add Google Play and Nova Launcher.

I'm still using mine. I only got it in January. It replaced my bricked Milestone 2 for a reasonable price, I love the design and if it wasn't for Froyo I'd want for nothing else.
Unfortunately, it is stuck with Froyo and I'm getting annoyed. But:
I didn't want to fork out the big bucks for an imported Relay 4G when it had a shonky-looking keyboard.
Motorola's qwerty line stops GSM support after the Milestone 2 which is only slightly better off in the ROM department than SK4G.
And there are no other pleasant or modern QWERTY options for Australia. So here I am!
(Also I love the girly magenta and no other woman in Perth is gonna whip out a Sidekick 4G. It was never even sold in Aus. I feel special!)

I'm still using mine. I only got it in January. It replaced my bricked Milestone 2 for a reasonable price, I love the design and if it wasn't for Froyo I'd want for nothing else.
Unfortunately, it is stuck with Froyo and I'm getting annoyed. But:

Yeah, the keyboard is awesome! Froyo is not so great. Though, the biggest gripe I have with it is that I can't use Chrome on it. Otherwise, I love the phone.
OK, I'm done, no more Sidekick for me.
Yes, it's not a phone, and yes, it's a strange gaming tablet, but I guess it would fit my needs, while Sidekick would be just a phone and WiFi access point.
Hope you guys would get something better than Froyo one day. I'm out of here, goodbye.

I'm planning on doing the same thing when I get my tablet, djh. It has Jelly Bean and I already figured out how to root it.
Anyway...thanks for your contribution and take care!

Just bought it from one of your betrayer for 20 bucks. Nice phone. I do not hate froyo, it is just the slow response bored me.
Also, the keyboard is not as fast as soft keyboard in note 2.
But for 20 bucks, I have no complain.

20 bucks you go a serious deal as this phone still goes for 100
An yes froyo is slow but the new nexus roms make is seem like no lag (atleast to me)

Wow I thought I got off cheap paying 60 for mine, it is flawless though, you would think its new.
Even if I would have know that there were only froyo ROMs for this phone ahead of time I still would have bought it, yes we need to move ahead, this phone is plenty capable of running even jb, but we need talent who has time to do so....

New Sidekick User
Hey everyone, I just got one for my girlfriend off ebay a few weeks ago, and everyone here in the subforum has been super helpful! I also got a second one for $50 that was broken with the reboot-power-button loop problem which I have about 60% fixed (using a TON of rubbing alcohol..).
I have to say, it is an odd little phone when it comes to hacking/rooting... My main phone is a Galaxy Exhibit 4G, which has its oddities as well, but the more I mess with this glitchy Sidekick the more I like it. My girlfriends phone is running RicAndroid's neXus JB 1.22, and so far so good. My Sidekick is running rooted and updated stock rom, for two reasons...
1) I can't seem to get CWM to stick without modifying the kernel as well
2) I really like the funky "urban" stock rom's style...
I wish there were a blend of all the features of JB with the look and feel of stock... That, or a functioning Bootmanager, so I could dual boot between stock and custom roms!

Sad times, 4.2.2 really isn't all that great, only real benefit to new phones are bigger screens and faster processors. Most of the features in 4.2.2 have 3rd party apps that mirror the new "features" if not improve on them. If you know of a 4.2.2 Android with a physical keyboard this big you let me know! Until getting one of these phones recently, I had forgotten the sheer joy of using a REAL keyboard!
