I've tried several different radio combinations and it all results in the same problem. Either I'll get reboots or I'll have a very difficult time getting internet connection. Which means, no 4g, no 3g and yep, no 1x.
I understand this is new technology and I decided to jump on this network so I should be patient with any growing pains..right, okay, whatever..
From my understanding, Verizon has built a whole new network for 4g users, which means, they're not on the Rev.A. They're on eHRPD along with CDMA + LTE/EvDo Auto. Is this the reason why, Thunderbolt users are having such a hard time transitioning from 4g-3g? Are there not enough 3g towers on this, "Thunderbolt new network" to handle us?
Why then do I get such a strong 3g signal transitioning to Rev. A along with CDMA PRL? When I have these settings, my 3g is always on; unlike when I have the primary settings( eHPRD + CDMA + LTE/EvDO Auto, I get no 3g and rarely get a 4g unless I'm outside my primary residence.

Trust me, I know it was down last week and I didn't complain once; however, it appears to be up again and I've been getting 4g periodically. What bothers me is the transitioning from 4g to 3g. I had 4g today and was running 10mbps download no problem, but when 4g gave out it couldn't even pick up 3g. So I changed over completely like I stated above and now have a solid 3g signal. Why can't we use the Rev.A along with CDMA + LTE/EvDo Auto? Is that radio combination possible?
[Q] I am DONE with 4G LTE, who's coming with me?

wow. I wasn't expecting comments from the peanut gallery. I think I raise some good points to consider. In no way am I going to throw my rooted Thunderbolt in the trash or trade it for another phone. I'm very happy with the phone, but for now, I'll be leaving it on Rev.A.
For dev's reading, please comment on what your thought are in my OP. I also want to know if anyone's battery temperature stays around 100 degrees Fahrenheit while operating on the 4g network. And what if anything can be done to prevent such an increased temperature.

Absolutely correct. You can't rant about poor 4g transition and blame it on eHRPD when that's down lol. eHRPD is actually what makes the transition smoother.
I'm sorry you are having a bad experience with it, but complaining won't help, and if you go back to 3g imagine how silly you will feel a couple months from now when everything is working perfectly and we have cm7 and gingerbread das bamf?

You may have just answered my question. So eHRPD has nothing to do with a different network? It only aids in transitioning users from 4g to 3g? Is there an easy way to confirm when eHRPD is back up and running?
EDIT: Okay, thank you for the information. I've done some research and posted what I've found below. It helps a lot when we know what the problem is and what actually is responsible for the loss of transitions.
Here's a nice confirmation: "Well, here is some semi-good news this morning folks. 4G LTE is back up nationwide, although we’ve been told eHRPD is not, which means no soft hand-offs between 3G and 4G at this time....."

That article is from the 28th? Is eHRPD still down (I'm kind of an idiot about these things)? I haven't noticed any data issues at all here in Detroit.
If you are getting no connection, might want to bring it in to Verizon, I wasn't getting any data and they fixed it, also to deal with the 3g/4g transitions I use LTE on off
And I will just put it in LTE mode when I knowing I'm in a 4g, and then switch it back to 3g when I'm not in a 4g area

I don't recall how I dug this up but I ended up on the xda captivate forum reading a thread about how HSUPA is disabled on the captivate. some people were saying that only the iphone had it enabled. Part of it sounded like conspiracy theory fud and some of it sounded reasonable but I didn't understand it.
HSUPA is related to upload speed, yes?
anyone knowledgable on the subject matter care to explain this to me?

Yes, HSUPA is related to upload speed, and HSDPA is related to your download speed. Together they make up the HSPA network, which has max speeds on AT&T of 7.2Mbps for downloads, and 5.6Mbps for uploads. You are also correct about AT&T disabling HSUPA on the Samsung Captivate, and almost any other phone they released last year not called an iPhone 4. Nobody knows the real reason behind why this happened, I assume it must be some part of the agreement they had in place with Apple, but now that this is over I highly doubt you'll see any phones that are locked out like that again. AT&T is very excited about the launch of the Inspire 4G and Atrix 4G, for them to disable these devices at this point would be silly at best.
everything you said makes perfect sense but i am not put at ease by the fact that AT&T would do this in the first place combined with what we are seeing currently in all the reviews. and i'm not talking about not getting 4g speeds. that's been discussed to death... fine... but weren't all the reviewers getting poor upload speeds too? (i actually don't recall exactly)
Except for the fact that every speed test done on this phone so far has been awful, and the iphone4 blows it away on both download and upload.
I'm gonna get it, and do a speed test with the two sitting next to each other. If I get much higher speeds on the iphone, the inspire is going right back.
I own the captivate and stock the upload was crippled. At first I didn't think that this was a big deal until I learned that upload speed directly relate to dl speeds. It has something to do with that your upload can get clogged and prevent download until it is cleared. But soon after I got the phone the devs released huspa enabled roms and now I get around 3000 down and 1800 up so my thinking is that even if att cripples the inspire which I think is unlikely seeing how they are advertising it as their first 4g, we should be able to use a different modem that will enable higher speeds.

It's not just the Inspire, AT&T has disabled HSUPA in every capable smartphone on their network besides the iPhone 4. I wrote an article a couple days ago where I reviewed the upload speeds from Inspire/Atrix 4G from reviews.
http://emuneee.com/2011/02/is-att-disabling-hsupa-on-its-4g-devices/
Noah at TechnoBuffalo does a side by side speed test of the Inspire 4G and iPhone 4. The iPhone consistently had upload speeds of 900+Kbps while the Inspire maxed at 393Kbps.
Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=KgCIF-G1HO8#t=732s
This should be circumvented by flashing a compatible modem from the Desire HD (Telus, which uses the same 3G bands) with HSUPA enabled.
Ughhh I really hoped they wouldn't do this with there new 4g phone..doesn't make sense to me why they would.
Sent from my Liberty using XDA App
rooted users will have a solution to this but we shouldn't have to put up with it on principle. I personally feel it is illegal to favor one (i)phone and not others. If they did it across the board then i would be upset but at least they are consistent. But they don't cap the iphone. I've been putting this message out at every media outlet I come across... Consumerist, MSNBC, TWiT, ATT facebook and twitter page, ATT forums, etc. i wish we had the community power to post a new thread on their FB and twitter feed about this every single day.

Is that actually a Telus Desire HD or AT&T Inspire hardware/software wise? If it is a Telus Desire, it would have it. The Captivate does to, as long as you are using a Telus, Bell, or Rogers modem. It is AT&T specific to the modem file that prevents HSUPA connections.

Quiet, you!
I worry much more about download than I do upload speeds. Currently the upload speeds on the Inspire are going to be slower than the iP4, but download was the same or better on the Inspire running Speedtest about 6 times. After all of the backhaul work on the network is done I think it's gonna be a different story.

It is easy to fix so while it would be nice out of the box the user can fix it.

Crippled unless they remove the limitation with a firmware update. No prob getting 1700 up on a captivate on my home tower; never break 500 with inspire. Has NOTHING to do with any switch getting flipped with regard to upload speeds.
If you want higher upload speeds, root and flash.

When you see the H+, this could mean you're connected to 3G, HSDPA, or, if available, HSPA+ (there's not multiple icons for these networks). HSPA+ (which isn't really "4G" - this is a marketing ploy developed by T-Mobile which AT&T decided to latch on to, I think they should be sued for this) is currently being rolled out, but it's not available in most areas.

I went to tmobile a week ago, and told him I wasn't getting any decent data speeds, and he looked at my sim card, (it was old), and said I had a 2g sim card. He swapped it out, and I've been getting better speeds. I didn't know there was such a thing as 2g sim cards, but mine was about 2 years old, so who knows. It's worth a shot regardless.
I'd like to know, too - I've seen a number of conflicting statements regarding T-Mobile's 4G, i.e., is 4G UMTS or HSPA, etc. T-Mobile's site shows that my area has 4G coverage, I have the 4G icon showing on my phone, but the network type shows as UMTS. The data speeds I'm seeing appear more aligned with that I'd expect on 3G as opposed to 4G; however, I'm far from unhappy.
I'd also like to know if there really is a 4G SIM card that's required. My current SIM came from my G2, which I purchased at release (no 4G in my area at that time, though). The G2 demonstrates the same 4G behavior: 3G-type data speeds and a network type of UMTS.

I can confirm that your phone WILL NOT display HSPA in the settings. Mine only shows UMTS even when I am getting 4G speeds. Last night I hit 10.7megs on my downstream using the speedtest app and when I checked the settings menu, it still showed "UMTS". I have been running a lot of speed tests all over Atlanta and I get speeds ranging from 3-10 megs (usually between 5-8 megs) and I have NEVER seen anything other than UMTS. I don't believe you will ever see anything different in the settings menu as long as you are on 3g or 4g.
I notice the same UTMS is a constant for me however when I get in a known hspa+ area. I get a little better speeds than I did on my n1. I wonder if its the way lg/the radio interface is reporting. my icon in my status bar never shows 3g just 4g or 2g. something is inconsistent in what the device shows vs what it is actually doing.
my. 2 cents
Here's a screenshot (as you can see, the speeds are "4G" but never once did it ever say anything other than UMTS in the settings menu.)

This is absolutely correct. GSM 4G is LTE not HSPA/HSUPA/HSDPA or HSPA+ All of the carriers talking about 4G in the USA it is simply a marketing point.
The GSMA allowed the carriers to redefine the definition of 4G is, thus allowing them to brand 3G networks as 4G. Sad really.

And can someone tackle the second part of my question? Uploading the update.zip from rom manager. It would take like two seconds.

I think this is what you are looking for. Navigated to sdcard/clockworkmod/recovery-update.zip. Hope this helps.
Thank you. But I guess clockwork was just having some issues with their server. It worked after like the 50th attempt.

What part of Atlanta? I'm in Buckhead and I'm lucky to hit 1Mbps.

I've run speed tests in the following areas: College Park, East Point, Hapeville, Fayetteville (today), Smyrna, Cobb County area (near the perimeter), Doraville, North Druid Hills area, Buford hwy (both Gwinnett and Dekalb side), Snellville, Stone Mountain, and Decatur.
In short, I've pretty much tested all over the city. On the low end I'll get about 4 megs and the highest I've gotten is 10.7megs (in College Park near the airport).
PLEASE. No flaming, whining, or arguing.
That being said, now that we all share this reminder of how things once were, lets get a little nostalgic and post speeds. (Had to be done)
I get 131k down, 87k up. (That's about 3x faster than dialup lol.)

EDIT: Also, to update, I got 3G back now. But it reads as Rev.A instead of eHRPD, this being without that EPST modification.

2.23 down, .87 up, 123 ping. Faster than my brother's Clear internet. Haha.
If you set your phone to not use eHRPD (plenty of posts on this forum and elsewhere with explicit instructions), you don't have to worry about 1x. I haven't heard of anyone setting their phone to use EvDO Rev. A and being unable to do so. The EvDO Rev A network seems to be working fine, as long as it uses the original HRPD and not eHRPD. Until we have LTE again, the only downside to disabling eHRPD is that you won't be able to use voice at the same time as EvDO. You can get around this by using a VoIP service like Google Voice or Skype and multi-task that with your other data.
There might be localized outages of EvDO as well, but nationwide, generally speaking, you shouldn't be on 1x today any more than any other day (ofc. if you ALWAYS only get 1x then you won't get anything better today, either...)
That said, more appropriate topic in the thread would be "Post your EvDO Rev. A speeds"
I'm getting 109 ping, 1320kbps down, 105kbps up on EvDO Rev. A in Maryland on my Thunderbolt. I think that's a bit below average -- I certainly remember getting better upstream on my previous EvDO smartphones -- but maybe it's because people are still up at 1AM and the EvDO radios are extra-busy due to the number of people with LTE in the area who are stuck on EvDO tonight. Since I've been in 4G coverage 24/7 since the day I bought my Thunderbolt in March, tonight is the first time I've tried EvDO on the Thunderbolt, and I can't say I'm impressed. But again, it may not be the Thunderbolt, but just the generally problematic state of VZW's network.

I am actually able to do the talk-and-browse thing on rev.A. Actually I'm doing that now, and it says Rev.A using the 4gswitch app.

Great idea! Why don't you go ahead and make that thread.
Also: that trick doesn't seem to work for anyone in my area, so if you are on 1X, post, if not go post in allquixotic's thread once he makes it.

Same here. I've actually had my phone set to that since I got it a month ago. Someone said it gave better battery life. I tried it, didn't notice any differences so just left it like that lol. Been doing data and voice at the same time while on 3g the whole time.

With AT&T announcing they are stating to turn on their LTE network on the 18th this month http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/15/atandt-to-officially-deploy-its-lte-network-september-18th/, will our Infuses benefit from the higher speed?
I've read through a couple other threads on the topic, but didn't see any definitive Yes or No's. Mainly just comments on battery life issues that LTE might cause.
So, is there any new info? Are our Infuses real 4G phones or just the same 3.5G/HSPA+ as the other 'mis-labeled' 4G phones from AT&T?
I'm not holding my breath. my "4G" state doesn't include my HOUSE oddly enough. The coverage map is bull**** at it's finest.
We don't have an LTE chip. We wont benefit from LTE.

LOL...This question is popping up all over and it just cracks me up...
There are not even any LTE phones on the market for ATT...
The article does confuse me though...they already have LTE active in a few cities, and it has been a city by city rollout....so are they going to turn on the remaining cities on the list on the 18th?
*Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, and San Antonio..which were already scheduled...
They literally have two hotspot devices that will take advantage of this... that is all that I am aware of.
They advertise the Atrix as having LTE on their website...but does it?
I do think we will see 3 or 4 LTE devices by the end of October though.
The Infuse only has HSPA+. AT&T's website says LTE for the Jetstream and their modems and such.
There's no reason they wouldn't shout it loud and proud if it did. It doesn't have LTE.
Atrix and Inspire = category 7 device with only 16QAM = 14.4mbps capable.
Infuse = category 10 device with support for 64QAM = 21mbps.
The network has to have 64QAM turned on to achieve HSPA+ speeds over 14.4mbps.
AT&T's network doesn't have it on for some idiotic reason. It's sadly 16QAM only which downgrades peak rates on Infuse from 21mbps to 14.4mbps.
Here are some videos to prove 16QAM limit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73zZtMF95SU
And to prove 14.4mbps cap: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYkeSJH5uSM
AT&T doesn't have LTE phones. Only one tablet, one air card, and one WiFi hotspot.
Those LTEless having basterds!

As I can tell, no. This is because the hardware just can not support it. Unless If they release a special version of the phone with LTE, then it will not happen (probably).

You can not just get on the LTE network if your phone doesn't have proper radio, not 700Mhz capable, etc. It's not like an old school AM radio so you can miraculously "tune in" to AT&T's LTE lol...
There is the overly expensive apple-like-priced HTC JetStream which is LTE but it is a tablet.
No. Just no. Everything about this thread. The answer is NO and its just NO in general. NO!!
I wonder what phones they will release for the 4G LTE network. There exists NONE currently and their leaked road-map does not show any. You would think something would come out along with the network this weekend.

For those people who would like a layman's discussion on what AT&T is supposed to be doing with LTE and will it work on your cell phone, there's a helpful article over on CNET which explains it. I'll post the link here:
http://www.cnet.com/8301-17918_1-20107452-85/at-ts-lte-boot-up-what-it-means-to-you-q-a/
Hope this adds some clarity for those who aren't familiar with cellular technology.
I think I might cut the grass today.
Oh and the answer still is no.
