With the new entries into the at&t android scene, will the captivate be left behind by the devs? A couple have already picked up new devices, is there cause for concern?
There will be others who step in, and given that you can run vibrant and i9000 roms there will be new stuff going on. The i9000 forum is really where the action is anyway. If hardcore and supercurio move on then I would say you have seen the end of what can be done with the sgs.
Porting vibrant roms, simple kernel/modem swap? Can it be done before and after flash?
Hope not.
@mccord
Yep, I usually boot the rom then flash the kernel and modem. Sometimes it wont work simply swapping them first.
It already has been abandoned. Jump ship while you still can.

Solid info, any recommendations? ;p
My point in the thread is this, were will development be in a month, what are our options. I9000 and vibrant ports are solid options. I don't think many understand how easy it is to do on their own
It will carry on no matter what. Browse around. Heck there is still stuff going on with devices that are 5 years old and older. So no it will not ever "end"

The new entries that is rolling out now, IMO, doesn't have the "wow" factor for anyone to upgrade and renew for another 2 years or even 1, yes opinion. I just returned my Inspire cause of it.
The Atrix, we will see. Accessories, accessories, accessories...reach deep in the pocket for it. Not worth it, ....we are just talking about a phone.
Samsung Infuse...oh yea... Neveragain.
I predict 3rd quarter, then "man overboard"
Development for these phone are easy for these devs, as long as leaked firmwares keep on popping up, and they have been. We all should be safe for awhile.
Sorry for the rambling...morning java...strong.
But yea, what newter55 said
I don't know if this indicative of how many people actually OWN a captivate, let alone DEVING...but I often find that next to Android development section of the captivate the number of viewing is usually around 300. There's still lots of captivaters, and I don't think everyone is in a position/able to jump ship.
I don't see why people are so worried, I'm looking into getting a Captivate myself. I know it's no Inspire 4G etc etc. But it's still a relatively new device. I know when I started in the WM6 days, people were still making WM5 roms etc for old devices. You will see people still working on them.

Not worried, there has been a general distaste towards samsung on this section. A couple major devs have already started work on other devices. They will be back fillef I am sure. Just curious to see what direction things go

Oh of course. I have been away for a long while. The last device I owned was a HTC Kaiser. Been with Blackberry since then. The Rhodium in my sig is my mothers that I tweaked for her.
Why do devs not like the Captivate? I've been looking into getting one to be able to learn Android and be as helpful as I was back in my older device days.

Interesting. Funny that you mention Quality control, my brothers brand new Captivate's screen went out under a month of getting it. It's like the screen decided not to turn on one day.
I've wondered this myself. I feel like if development will continue after the next 6 months its going to be on cyanogen... but hey. I'm relatively new to android so take what i say with several grains of salt
If the atrix lives up to the hype ill be abandoning my captivate....unlocked bootloader and its over

I feel that the amount of work the devs are putting into this phone are making it a great device. I switched to an LG Quantum recently (and love it) But thanks to the joys of owning a sim card, I switch to my captivate at least twice a week. Go to the LG Quantum forum, and you'll see why. There isn't much to do. Not much hacking, no OC's, no UC's, just questions like "What case looks prettiest on my phone?" =/
This even applies to the majority of Motorola android phones, especially MOTOBLUR devices. There just isn't that much to do with them. As for the Captivate, there will always be some random, somewhat useless feature we're all going to go gaga over. ("OMG I CAN TAKE PANORAMA SHOTS.... MUST SHARE WITH XDA...") It's just the spirit of the Captivate forum. We're all in the same poorly navigated, highly customizable boat.
*group hug* xP
Well the origianal droid is about as customizable as the galaxy s it has gingerbread already...and honestly up until recently most of the "custom" roms were just bloatware free versions of vibrant or i9000 versions of TW. Andromeda and serendipity and supernova all are themed giving a feeling of something new and fresh....if we could get some aosp builds then this phone would really be great and we would see some true custom roms.....the devs are what's keeping the galaxy s alive.

So its going to be released pretty soon.. what are the odds of the Captivate getting some love?

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to go with 'Nil.'
The chances are non existent. It just makes business sense for for these updates to take forever. I do understand there are some hardware issues with the updates but in the end the average consumer is going to purchase a new phone or use their upgrade in order to get the latest os. If they keep updating old phones to the newest stuff people would hold onto their phone longer. I mean, ths is the first phone ive ever owned that I could flash custom roms onto. Before this I was locked into the operating system and whatever user interface was on the phone when I purchased it. If I hadnt found this forum or custom roms I would be frustrated by the lack of gingerbread and probably would have used my upgrade by now.
No hope. Most of the features aside from the UI wont work anyways due to not having the hardware (NFC) or lack of CPU and RAM (Camera features).
Just get a nice theme
they have it up and running on fascinates, as of 5AM this morning
We didnt even get official GB and we want ICS.....lol so greedy we people are...
Hell yeah Well rogers got the official gb , but att, com'on, forget about it.
First, do a little more searching. There is alreadya thread open for this topic.
That said, we will never see an official update. Our only hope of seeing it is from a port, courtesy of a device that does get it, or wait on CyagenMod to start on CM9.
Be patient. It'll be ported eventually.
I find it amazing that somone already has it somewhat running on their fascinate. I guess all the great Cappy dev's have jumped ship
Well, i'd be surprised to see ICS for our captivate. Even if cyanogen mod is getting ICS, i probably won't jump because of the superior call quality and slightly (if not better) battery life on captivate ROMs.
I thought there was some sort of court ruling forcing google to push the same version of android to all phones that were capable. I could be talking out of my ass though.

Um I did? - and even the XDA board didn't give me the topic yet so meh.
And someone has this starting to run on the Fascinate?? The Captivate is THE phone that seems to get the most love besides the Vibrant for this range of devices.
And I don't care how we get it... as long as someone is able to wedge it into the phone.
You know, it's open source.
Any of you asking for it can take a crack at it
I am seriously inexperienced, but this might be a good start to a programming career..

Nope, not even in the ballpark. Google has no legal obligation to any phone. What you are thinking of is how Google made the main phone produces agree to try harder to keep the phones up to date (up to one and a half years past release aka 18months). But that did not extend to the carriers...
Else they have to stop using the "Android" name and Google's apps

I've read plenty of crap about the G2x and how terrible it can be. Is there a way to tell apart the bad batches from the good ones? Maybe by IMEI? Baseband? OS version?
Thanks!
honestly, ive had my G2x since may? and only problem ive ever had(and still have) is slight screen bleed on my top corners.
other than that, i love and enjoy this phone everyday !

Agreed. I got my phone off of Craigslist and it's even a winner. This is my favorite phone...of all time, maybe. Came from a Vibrant and I won't own another Samsung product for a while.
No good or bad batches. They all come with junk software which is easy fixed with Nvflasher and a custom rom.

OP, do yourself a favor and find a different phone. Honestly, this phone isn't worth the trouble you'll put yourself through. There are better options out there, no need to subject yourself to dealing with the G2X. Perfect example, it's December and they're trying a 2nd time around to release the gingerbread update...the phone came out in April! That should have been done a long time ago. That being said, how soon do you expect it to be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich? Find another device, it isn't worth the trouble.

We're already getting alpha's of ICS. And since we're all on XDA, we've all had GB since CM7. I don't see any other reason to deter him away from this device.

What newer device doesn't have an alpha build of ICS yet? Really, that's nothing to hang your hat on. Truth be told you may never get a bug free build of ICS until the actually release comes out, or at least leaks with the things they will need to make it more stable and bug free. That didn't even really happen completely with gingerbread. The phone's fine if you're someone who's already stuck with it, and can't get out of it (for whatever reason). But, I couldn't in good conscience recommend anyone to purchase this phone. Fact is, if he intends to have anything even close to a pleasant experience HE WILL HAVE TO HACK HIS PHONE, and even then there aren't any guarantees. There are much better options out there.
Honestly the g2x still outperforms most other newer phones released this year( exnyos sgs2 aside )
With ics confirmed for our devices and both cm team and our brilliant devs here on g2x thread who got hw acceleration and just about everything else working for a beta release, I'd say our g2x's are go for their true potential. Though not quite ahead of its time as the hd2 was.. when ics is released for g2x it will only future proof the device longer since that is the OS meant to keep g2x owners happy they kept it!
Oh and I wouldn't say hacking the g2x is difficult anyways, since its one of the easiest phones to root ever lol

Though the installation and post-installation is PAIN IN YOUR ASS, it works 100% with nearly zero problem after it's done and it's worth the pain.

I like this phone, it's only the second smartphone I've ever had and my other was a failberry. I had no experience with android and managed to root and flash a rom with no problems only a couple weeks after getting it. I will agree that this is not the greatest phone out of the box with the software, but if you enjoy flashing roms and trying things out it has some good hardware for the price. Some people enjoy rooting and exploring things, and this is a good phone for them IMO.

Then maybe it's user error on your part because the stock GB build was perfectly fine for me. Rooted or not rooted, my phone has never shut down, rebooted, or SOD. It's fine if you don't like the phone, but it would be ignorant to deter someone away from it just because you had a bad experience. There's many that have good experiences with this phone.
Stock ROM is fine.
Custom ROM's based on stock are good.
And CM7 is even better.

I am on my 4th replacement LG-P999 (G2X/WIND Optimus 2X) which I got within the first 15 days of getting the first one and this one has screen bleed at the top corners and light leakage along both edges leaking through the LCD mask. Hardware-wise, if it doesn't have any problems, it is a good phone but the support for it from LG is abysmal, they should be forced out of the cell phone business for that. This phone is only as good as it is because of the hard work done by various developers here and elsewhere who I can't thank enough for that. If you like modding your phone's functions and capabilities, this is probably the best phone for that other than the Optimus 2X P990 model which has the added ability of installing various basebands. When ICS is available with video acceleration, the better camera (no lag), etc., it will significantly improve this phone's operation to what it should have been when it was first sold, it was ahead of Android's ability to take advantage of its hardware. Even if LG does provide ICS for this phone which, although they have promised to provide for the Optimus family of phones such as the 2X, I don't believe it will because it has already moved on in preference to support its 3D phone for which it has released an update to double the phone's 3G/4G speed and other significant improvements. If I were to buy another phone, even though the new Nexus does not have the best hardware, it would be that because it has ICS and will be updated for at least the next 18 months. Second to that would be the new Samsung which is promised to get ICS which I do trust Samsung to do. I will never buy another LG phone or other LG product because LG is so unethical in its business practises. So, you pays your money and takes your chances, just don't bet on a known loser, LG.
I've been running the same ROM on my phone for the past 4 months which is UNHEARD of for me. I like trying and testing new roms (that actually work) but at this point there just isn't anything new. What happened to all the development?? I used to see a new ROM every week!
This device is a year old now. Development slows near that mark. I imagine more roms when Ics is released.
I dont really see this as a big deal -- so long as anything major gets taken care of...

Most of them left because people kept pestering them to slave away all day and night
Only half serious, but yeah there are quite a few people that are always asking like this stuff is easy to do. Phone is a year old and people lose interest in putting out new stuff when there's no updates to work off of from HTC and Verizon. That and there was quite a bit of drama involved with a few ROMs that took some of the motivation out of at least one or so developers from bad attitudes by users.
People theme and develop for a few reasons (typically in this order):
1) They own/use the device
2) They like modding and hacking software for fun
3) They like the community they're modding for
When they no longer do #1 (as many have gone to the Nexus or other devices), if they don't have both #2 and #3 going for them, it gets harder to find the motivation to keep on going.
When a major release comes out again like ICS, there will be more development and then it'll eventually trickle off again. That's the way it works, especially now that there are an abundance of android devices on verizon compared to 2-3 years ago when there was basically a handful.
If you want new all the time, then get a new phone. Most preferably the Nexus as it's going to get updates for at least the next 3 or more years. Otherwise, in a year from now, you'll be asking this same question again with any other device most likely.
Honestly I was never a "crack flasher" and never had the interest in trying most ROMs. I've used CM7 for 80% of the past 12 months and never found interest to try anything else.

So does this mean its the end of the Thunderbolt. Its kinda a crying shame. We have had this device now for only a little over a year. That seems way to short to just up and move on to a new device. I cant believe I am saying this, but with the Iphone atleast there is a few years between the release of each new device. Sure they are always updating the software, but atleast your on same hardware. With a android base phone you HAVE to keep dumping out tons of money to keep up with the lastest and greatest. It gets expensive. With that said, which has been a big complaint in the community of technology, we keep buying the new products on the day it comes out. Its a wonder how anything goods come out for the new devices. Which in turn makes the Mods/Devs have to work harder to be able to keep up with the fast paced change of the Android world. It sucks how fast something gets thrown to the wayside.....I Love the Thunderbolt and I do not plan on getting a new phone when my contract ends. (I love being contract free) So Thank you Mods/Devs for the Roms that you have put out, and thank you for working so hard so I can enjoy this phones 5 mins of fame.

The end? I think you tl;dr'ed my post. Development is just in a recession until something worth doing comes out again (ICS). It won't obviously be the same as it was when the device came out, but obviously nothing can ever hit the peak that a new device has in interest no matter what it is.
I also don't see how an iphone will solve your problems. You'll just be mad you can't do anything with your device (which seems to be your problem with Android too, but you won't be able to flash anything on an iphone).
To be completely honest, I sorta had an idea of the answer to my own question before I asked it but thought I'd open it up to other input as well. I am well aware that there hasn't been any new updates or upgrades from HTC or Verizon for our phones so I don't blame the developers for getting bored and moving on. I just wish the development continued as it had started. I had the original Motorola Droid (first generation) and the development on that phone was so strong that I guess I'm just saddened by the lackluster effort for further development.
Either way, big thank you to the developers who have and continue to develop for our phones. Cheers to you guys!
PS. Big, fat donation to whoever develops the first full working ICS ROM for our phones
Nothing but now the world have new phones and the developers work more in the new phones...

So have they figured out how to fix the data issues with AOSP roms? That seems to be the biggest thing left to do until ICS comes out.
You can always develop your own roms to get your fix. It's what I've been doing. In fact I'm working on my own 3.5 rom atm.

I took my old Thunderbolt out and flashed it with the ThunderStick Full Blown Sense 3.0 ROM because I was bored and it's pretty cool. I liked it enough to set it up for my wife, who's been using a Dinc with CM7 for a long time. She really likes it and the guys at the Verizon store were perplexed by the fact that it looked like a Rezound (Sense) when installing the SIM.
Well as you all may know, LG claims korean devices will get ics. We have been holding our breathe for a long time, suprised we are not all dead yet. Regardless, what does everyone think about the g2x and the current development that is going on? I myself am quite frustrated with it. I can get jellybean to build but it is still very much broken, and I refuse to release something that turns my device into a paperweight. I will open source my stuff before too much longer, just to see what others can do, but I do not see many people, deving, modding or even themeing anymore.
I personally like my g2x it stomps my galaxy nexus in quadrants (which means nothing, I just like the big numbers) but it also seems to handle games alot better. I have been through 6 defective ones but, I still hang on to it. I have sold all my other devices besides my nexus and my g2x.
I am sure I got off on the wrong foot with some people, however everything I said came true. Certain teams claimed other teams work as their own and refused to submit their minute changes upstream as required by the gpl they claim protects their rebranded work and now all further development has stopped. The more people that work on something the better off the chances are for success but yea.....anywho
This is not intended to be a flame thread or an i told you so thread. This is intended to find out what everyone thinks of the current development and state of their phone. I want to know what the average user would like to see. What is everyone looking for besides the perfect jellybean/ics rom because none of them will be perfect untill LG gets off its ass.

I don't mind if I don't get ICS, cm7 is stable as hell (using kameask or however you spell it), plus faux keeps up with kernels.
V6 super charger makes it twice as snappy, and testing out swapper again just to see.
But regardless, this phone does everything it needs to do at a very good pace. I don't mind if it doesn't get ICS . There isn't much benefit over it then what we have now.
I love the phone and the support from the community but despise the neglect from LG/nVidia. I was running different ROMs until I needed full bluetooth support on the v21y baseband so now I'm back on stock Gingerbread :-\
I bought this phone on contract with intentions of it being future proof and lasting the full 2 years. A year into my contract and the specs are still great on paper. A little bit more RAM would be nice but I can work with it. Just please LG, hook us up with ICS. I don't really want to cough up 400 bucks for a Galaxy Nexus...
I love my g2x...I have been messing around with Harsh's kernel for CM 7...(I even got a OC/UV version...hehe)...I thought about making a CM7 kang (with tweaks and what not)...or an AOSP GB ROM...but right now I'm in school...and debating if I should put the time and effort into development...I don't mind...I'm still learning about how kernels works...and would love to develop something (or at least help out) for our devices...
I like my g2x a lot. Bought it off eBay 7 months ago and have been impressed with the power this thing has. I am very distrought that we are 2 versions of android behind. Yes we have ICS but its not to the level of perfection I need and thus am still on GB. This is my 3rd android phone and I have never fallen this behind thanks to devs of xda.
I understand the driver/source code issues that are holding us back. If we can get a port of our Korean counterpart's ICS, then I will most likely just hold onto this phone for awhile longer.
My contract us up in 3 months and I could save money by going to a monthly plan. If we can't get fully functioning ICS though, I'll be hopping on the note 2. I'm getting the note 2 regardless, but would just like to wait till the right deal comes along instead of paying top dollar.

There are still some ports showing up, but I see 2 things being a barrier to more/better dev activity -
1) Driver availability. Both ICS and GB. ICS ROMs are stuck on things needing HW acceleration, for example. The Froyo camera is almost fully ported to 2.3+ but not exactly. JB - even more so.
2) In call BT audio for new BB. Even though we can flash to have custom ROMs work with v21y, this function is still not working. That is a big reason why I have quit flashing the past few months.
I do like the phone and will keep it until it breaks.

I don't attempt to run ics or jb roms anymore, they still seem unstable. But I am quite content with gb, though I still haven't found a rom+kernel that solves everything. Either it lags or I get SOD/overheating. So far I like cm7 nightlies best, don't know which kernel to go with though.
Galaxy Nexus is on it's way. My G2X is just too buggy, but I am going to keep it as a backup. Plus I want to go to an unsubsidized plan as the rates are much cheaper. For the same price I pay now I can get unlimited talk, text and data, plus hotspot (which I am not paying for now but have been warned that it will soon be an additional $15/month). I make back the cost of the GNEX in one year with the better service and reduced rate.

I like Kwes and BuruRom rooted stock in addition to Temasek's CM7. I've got my phone figured out. If/when (on CM7 based roms) data drops or MMS bugs cause me frustration, I just restore Nandroid back-ups of those rooted stock version(s). If I need to drive an HD movie out the HDMI port for my kids in the backseat, I have better results with Morfic's kernel/CM7. Yeah, the phone runs hot (gets unstable) when pushed hard. It still does all I ask of it - day in, day out. I plan to make it work till I am eligible to upgrade. I hope my replacement for my G2x won't need to be any bigger. I miss the days of being able to forget my cell phone is in my jeans pocket!
I am waiting for a new nexus phone to come out and i am going to buy that and ditch the g2x. I am still running Bionix Reloaded because it is the best rom I have found to date and I have no reason to switch. I tried some ICS roms but my battery died in a few hours and I barley got a data connection. I appreciate all of the hard work and development with the G2X but LG killed it by not releasing drivers. I find it really sad because the G2X is such a powerful phone. I think it is still competitive with current phones that are being released with the software being the only exception. I told myself I will never purchase a new phone unless it is a nexus phone due to the fact that they will get updates.
LG definitely lost my business for a long time.
Personally
I would love to develop for the G2x(I'm learning, but just barely) , but I can't see much that I am capable of doing right now. I'm gonna cook versions of CM7 and play with building kernels. We are in a holding pattern until the nVidia drivers come forward or the CM7 bluetooth thing gets resolved.
Going to keep the phone until at least Christmas, even later probably. My Nexus 7 has made my g2x have great battery life!

Lol... I got my nexus 2 or 3 weeks ago and swore I would sell my g2x ( at one point I was contemplating having my friends form a firing line directly at the phone. Then sending the video to lg and nvidia, interrupted by Linus giving them the finger.) But I haven't. I really love the phone to be honest. I was lucky enough to get one without major screen bleed and it has only locked up on me twice (PC/UV kernels).. I'm seriously contemplating keeping it as a back up phone.
I do wish that nvidia and lg would hurry up with the update so I could play around with fully functioning jb Roms, but since I know nothing about coding, I'm no help.
I also notice fewer and fewer devs working on it. I hope they are just waiting for the drivers tho.
So all in all, I still have the phone, even though I have moved on.

Thanks for OP posing this topic. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the contributors in G2X sections, it has benefit me as a Wind Mobile customer in Canada.
I am am not looking for the next new Android OS, I just want a custom ROM that has little or no bloat-wear that is very stable and utilizes the phone's fullest potential. LG /or Wind Mobile has abandon the upgrade to our phone and it is stuck at 2.2.2. We screamed, we yelled, we petitioned and its not going any where. Therefore I will not buy/support any Korean manufactured phones in the future.
So, please keep up the good work.
Thank you,
Cody

Agreed, the devs here have done a wonderful job. Though I don't blame them for moving to another device.
I am running ics(hellfire sandwich) on g2x. Except the camera everything seems to work. Waiting for jellybean. I dont think i will change my phone atleast this year. All the games run well. I am dissapointed cuz we are being ignored by lg and nvidia.
