I have a defy with 2.51 from Red Bull in Austria.
I want to install CM7
what i have done so far:
rooted
recovery installed
nandroid backup done
what i want to know:
If i need to send it in for repair, is everything i need to do to flash back the nandroid? or is this not possible because of the lost of downgradability on 2.51?
it would be nice form you to tell me this things
If you have a nandroid of your system, and a fixed SBF of your 2.51, all you need to do to send it to warranty is restore your nandroid then flash the fixed SBF.

if you don't flash the full SBF, your downgrade-ablility is fine.
here the safe step to install CM7 to keep your downgrade-ability:
FROM ECLAIR
1. get root, install recovery app, reboot
2. place nandroid backup of 3.4.2-177 to your sdcard
3. turn off usb debuging, go to your custom recovery app: tap install recovery (allow root access when needed), tap reboot recovery
4. from custom recovery, wipe data, then wipe cache
5. then restore nandroid
6. choose reboot system now, BUT IMMEDIATELY go to bootloader (press and hold vol.up immeditely after phone reboot)
7. defy is in bootloader state, connect usb (make sure your computer has usb driver installed), open RSD-Lite 4.9 to flash the Fixed SBF of 3.4.2-177
8. let the process begins and wait untill phone fully starts.
now you in Froyo 2.2.2 (build number 3.4.2-177) state, with still have a downgrade-ability.
9. place CM7 beta5 zip and google app zip to sdcard root
10. make sure that nandroid backup rom you just restored is rooted (there is superuser app on there),
and UNINSTALL any custom recovery app you can found (usualy named SD recovery, System Recovery, etc)
11. install bootmenu instead (there's a custom recovery inside that bootmenu)
-download this file (bootmenu), create folder named "bootmenu", and extract zip files into that folder.
-copy "bootmenu" folder to your sdcard root (it should like this /sdcard/bootmenu)
-turn on usb debuging
-do this from terminal emulator or with adb in command prompt:
Code:
$ su [COLOR="Gray"](look up your phone immediately, allow root access)[/COLOR]
# cp -R /sdcard/bootmenu /data/bootmenu
# cd /data/bootmenu
# chmod 755 *
# ./install.sh
[COLOR="gray"]--------- it should says installation done and says please reboot. but don't reboot now.[/COLOR]
# rm -R /data/bootmenu
--------- reboot now
12. you will automaticaly go to bootmenu, choose boot, and set the default boot to 2ndInit
13. go back, go to recovery>custom recovery: wipe data, then wipe cache
14. choose install zip from sdcard, choose CM7 beta5 zip
15. choose install zip from sdcard again, choose google apps zip
16. reboot system now, first boot seems much longer
17. it's done.
if you want to go back to eclair
1. turn off usb debuging,
2. copy nandroid backup of your ECLAIR to sdcard, put it in /sdcard/clockworkmod/YourEclairNandroidFolder (must "clockworkmod" not "goapkrev")
3. reboot phone
4. have a attention, when blue lights is on while motorola logo shows, immediately press vol.down
-you will go to bootmenu, go to recovery>custom recovery
-wipe data then wipe cache
-choose restore, choose your eclair nandroid backup
5. choose reboot system now, BUT IMMEDIATELY go to bootloader (press and hold vol.up immeditely after phone reboot)
6. defy is in bootloader state, connect usb, open RSD-Lite 4.9 to flash the Fixed SBF of your Eclair Build 2.51 Aus Red Bull
(must a same build number with your nandroid backup, i can't find a link for that build number)
7. let the process begins and wait untill phone fully starts
8. it's done.
now you back on Eclair
thank you very much

Ok, so Was using my nexus s today and I kept getting the notification to perform a system update to the newest version of gingerbread (2.3.4). Prior to pressing update my phone was at 2.3.1 default with 2.5.### ClockworkRecovery and it was rooted. Everything worked on it perfect. So I proceeded to download and install the update, and CWR fails to install the update and I would have to take out the battery to restart the phone. I had been doing this multiple times and I wanted to get it updated. So I go into CWR and try installing it manually:
I look around and try to find the file and I couldn't, I reset user data to see if it would fix it and it didn't, then I go back and start formatting the following folders, /system, /cache, /data and one other but I did not format /boot, so Then (noob me) I restart to phone and of course the rom is gone. I get back to recovery and try to restore from update.zip but the console said the file could not be found, I look up my model and look for a full verison rom and the mount my usb storage and place the rom .zip on the storage and try to install from .zip on sd but it did not work so I end up grabbing this and installing it and now I'm stuck, when I do adb shell it doesn't pick up the phone any more, it can fast boot on the phone but it can't go into recovery and I have no idea what I should do to try to fix this problem.
NOTE: before I ened up installing and replacing the recovery, my /system folder would not mount due to "invalid arguments"
Model is i9020T
I don't have firmware version access
and if there is any other information I can provide please let me know
Update:
I got the device to be recognized by fastboot but not by "adb shell", when I type adb shell no device is found, so I guess my question now is do I need to just flash a new recovery and then try to flash a new rom?
Solution:
1. fastboot your phone, (volume up+lock/power button)
2. place the recovery image you want to install in the "Android SDK"/tools/ folder
3. in your cmd/terminal, while in "Android SDK"/tools/ execute:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery "NAME-OF-RECOVERY.img"
4. once that is installed and it should work, then restart your recovery mode
5.clear all your data/factory reset, including davlik cache
6.mount your sd to your computer so you can place the Rom you want on your phone's sd
7. In recovery choose zip from sdcard to install.
8. It should install, if it gives you problems try another rom, I had problems with rAv 1.2.2, keep restarting every minute. I used "NS-2.3.4-GRJ22-Stock-Deodexed-signed.zip" and it worked.
9. Restart the phone and be patient the phone will start up and you should be set.
Hope this helps someone!
lets just say in the event I needed to return to stock but I wanted to be on 2.3.4 could I just find the ROM and install it ober CM7 and wipe or would I have to flash that nandroid stock backup? I have the t-mobile Nexus

I have a feeling that you would have to flash with nandroid stock backup. At least according to this guide i found elsewhere. (theunlockr dot com/2011/01/20/how-to-unroot-the-nexus-s/)
I. Before You Begin
1. This will return the phone back to the stock ROM and put you at build GRH78.
2. Use this method to start over, or to send your phone in for warranty reasons.
3. You MUST have a custom recovery image to use this unrooting method.
4. This WILL WIPE everything on your phone.
II. Create a Nandroid Backup
1. Turn off your phone.
2. Turn it back on by holding down Volume Up and Power until the green Android shows up on the phone.
3. Using the volume buttons and power to select, select Recovery from the menu.
4. Once in recovery mode, select Backup and Restore then select Backup and wait for it to backup your current ROM.
5. Once it is done, select Reboot and wait for the phone to reboot.
III. Flash the Stock Nandroid Backup
1. Download the stock Nandroid Backup and save it to your computer.
Stock GRH78 Nandroid Backup
2. Extract the .zip file somewhere on your computer.
3. Plug your phone in via USB cable and mount the internal storage so we can transfer files to it.
4. Find the Clockword folder on your phone’s internal storage and open it, then open the Backup folder inside there.
5. Copy the 2010-12-22.21.06.07 folder from the .zip file you extracted and put it inside the Backup folder we just opened.
6. Turn off the phone.
7. Turn it back on by holding down Volume Up and Power until the green Android shows up on the phone.
8. Using the volume buttons and power to select, select Recovery from the menu.
9. Once in recovery mode, select Backup and Restore then select Restore and choose the 2010-12-22.21.06.07 backup and wait for it to restore the phone to stock.
10. Once it is done restoring, select Reboot and wait for the phone to reboot.
11. Once it does reboot, turn it off and then back on normally again (this is to clear out the recovery image and bring that back to stock as well).
IV. Relock the Bootloader
1. On the phone, go through the setup process clicking skip where ever possible.
2. Then hit Menu then Settings then Applications then Development and make sure USB debugging is checked ON.
3. Plug the phone in via USB.
4. Open a command prompt on the computer by clicking on the Start menu and typing cmd and hitting enter in the search bar.
5. Then in the command prompt, type the following with hitting enter at the end of each line (this is assuming you did our How To Root the Nexus S procedure):
cd\
cd c:\androidsdk\tools
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem lock
6. The phone should relock the bootloader and you are now fully stock and completely ready to send the phone in for warranty

RESTORE APPS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHB5-9zoqNU&feature=youtu.be
If you want to restore faster you need the permium version
or the second way to restore apps
RESTORE APPS
This method is faster than the free version
of Titanium Backup but there could be problems
like force closing apps or annoying stuff like this
1. Boot into recovery with Rom Manager or
shut down the phone and press volume down +
3d + power (sometimes a little bit tricky)
2. Go to backup and restore and select advanced
restore.
3. Select the backup with the apps you want to restore.
4. Select restore data.
5. Reboot
INSTALL NEW KERNEL/OVERCLOCKING
1. Download a Kernel from the Forum (Titan Kernel is great!!!)
2. Boot into reckovery
3. !!!Make a Backup!!!
4. Select install zip
5. Select the zip
6. Reboot
After that you can take a look on this:

problem restoring
Hi ive recently ran into problems with my O3d and i need to do a recovery on it. I had rom manager on it and i backed up everything before it went wrong but now all my apps and games and stuff has gone including rom manager!!! Ive also tried the volume down and power button but i cant seem to access the restore part of it only wipe data/factory reset. I know all my stuff is still on my memory card though which makes it the more frustrating lol. Is there anything that can help me with this or is it a case of I just have to start again??? Any help would be grateful. Cheers

You could install a new rom using kdz method then root it then install clockwork recovery then enter clockwork recovery and restore
Hello...
Nice guide you have. Overlaps with manbearpig's somewhat, but you have the video tutorials
For flashing CWM, I recommend using this instead. Prevents the common problem where ROM Manager shows LG Optimus 2x rather than Optimus 3D and the user flashes it anyway, bricking/bootlooping the phone.
You have only included installation of custom roms, You may add installation of stock roms by kdz method. first do this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1473781&highlight=kdz then http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1287236 and get kdz from here http://lg-phone-firmware.com/index.php?id_mod=2
thanks for the posts I will add this tomorror or in a few hours because I am now online with my phone and it is to much to write

I don't know if I understood you but just to be sure; you get in recovery mode CWM and on reboot TWRP?
I don't think you will like this solution but probably you will get your phone to work again xD (you will lose your data)
First of all you need:
- Android SDK bundle (google it, you will find it) on your Computer
- And a Rom you want to sideload (In your case the Cyanogen Rom)
- Cwm
Follow this steps:
1. go to the SDK bundle folder you downloaded -> go to sdk
-> go to platformform-tools
-> copy your ROM (ZIP-file) inside that folder
-> and name it to ROM.zip (so you won't need to write down a longname in cmd afterwards)
2. go to the SDK bundle folder you downloaded -> go to sdk
-> now press [shift] + [right mouse button] on platformform-tools (folder) to open cmd
3. Reboot your device into recovery mode (use cwm)
4. Go to “Mounts & Storage” and make sure that you can see “Unmount /sdcard/” and “Unmount /system/” (If they do not show this automatically, just press each one once respectively as pressing just toggles Mount and Unmount).
5. Now connect your device to the PC.
6. Once the phone is connected to the PC type “adb devices” in the cmd. If it returns a long alphanumeric string the phone is successfully connected in ADB mode. (if not look out for a usb driver for your phone; most time the problem lies in there)
7. Now type “adb push ROM.zip /sdcard/ROM.zip” (replace the word ROM if didn't named it)
8. This may take a while so be patient.
9. Once the process is complete you’ll see a message like <12345678kb to 1234567kb> on the cmd window.
10. Now unplug the device.
11. Go to the main screen of recovery and perform factory reset, wipe cache partition and then in advance menu wipe Dalvik cache. (Now you will lose your data for sure xD)
12. Now go to install zip from sdcard and choose the zip file you just transferred.
13. Once the process is complete, reboot the device
Hope this will help you.

If you use TWRP there are some similar step by step guides ( maybe you should look for sideload)

so I wrote the command and it sad "5143kb/s «241840314 bytes in 45.912s»"
then i went install the zip and I can't find it
ok i went and mounted the data , pushed the file and installed it, thank you so much
But now i need to install the stock backup that I did with TWRP
That's pretty weird xD Because you get the message for a successful transfer but can't find the Zipfile.
You could try to push the Zipfile again and don't wipe anything at all (because you already wiped everything) and try to find the Zip file again to flash it.
Btw what does CWM gives you as options if you click install Zip files?
