CREDITS: This is posted for informational purposes only, and originally comes from MrGuy on TabletRoms for the Notionink Adam. Additional device specific information comes from roebeet on SlateDroid for the Viewsonic G Tablet, newbe5 and corvus on Modaco for the Advent Vega. With contributions from DJ_Steve (StephenH official NI dev), josh4trunks (Contract NI dev), and Dauiton from Tabletroms. Hardware acceleration and sound enabled by HomerSp. Thanks go to red_herringx for providing the system dump as well.
*** UPDATE 12:00pm EDT May 12th 2011 MrGuy has done it again, looks like the Market (gapps) issue has been resolved! MrGuy says " Borkata's link and HomerSp's test app helped a lot too"
May 5th 2011
Logged into IRC this morning and to my surprise there was some interesting chatter going on.
It seems that MrGuy has gotten as far as booting HoneyComb on the Adam. In the source post he has made his progress available for other devs to work on.
Although at this time, it seems to only work while holding your Adam upside down...
NOTE: In order to use this, you must make sure you use the utmost delicate hand gestures when touching your screen, as seen in the video.
***05/05/2011 11:24 [-04:00 GMT] PROGRESS: DJ_Steve aka StephenH in collaboration with MrGuy, has made progress in figuring out how to stop the Force Close. There seem to be some issues with the touch screen at this time..
14:03 -04:00 GMT ADD: roebeet's quick to get this on the GTAB
UPDATED VIDEO:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tremendous progress was made this morning and is being made as you read this.
It's exciting news and thought I would share it with a sister tablet.
HoneyComb is booting on the Notion Ink Adam and now it's on the GTAB as well.
FRESH TODAY 9th May 2011 11:30AM EDT
Cross collaboration between devs of sister tablets in the ##adamroot freenode IRC channel this morning!
Devs: HomerSp got hardware acceleration working, newbe5/corvus got it working on the Advent Vega (video demo below) and DJ_Steve applied them to the Adam HC rom and confirmed to now be working smoothly!
9th May 2011 12:05 EDT
DJ_Steve showsoff hardware acceleration implementation on Notioink Adam.

Nice! Haven't read through the entire thread yet but definitely some interesting stuff.
Excellent!
Great news.
Yet another reason to have a beer on Cinco de Mayo
So was he the one who won the Honeycomb bounty? Didn't they have a bounty on the first HC port?
Is it wrong that I'm excited by this news?

No. You can be excited and optimistic. I think its a moral victory at this point but it'll spark hope again to some. But to others, they won't see it as nothing but a makeshift ROM with no value because its not the real thing. As a fan of modders and devs, I can feel excited for them because its a good accomplishment.
OP should add the screenshot to their post:

This is great news. It looked pretty laggy in the video. Now all we need is some leaked Nvidia drivers and we are set!

Glad to see you still hanging around here roebeet. As for the HC port, not in my most optimistic dreams did I think it would be ported over this quickly regardless of the experimental level its currently at. Guess that goes to show how motivated people are when they're told they can't do something! If you need any testers, just tell me where to sign up!
I'll get excited when I see a full Linux distribution ported to the g-tablet (with hardware drivers).
This is just another version of the limited Android OS.
Posted on Viewsonic and nVidia Facebook page, hope they will answer us with a good news ....

I managed to get it running by flashing Honeycomb.zip from the Notion Ink Adam thread and then flashing pershoot's latest kernel.
It's just like in that video: very slow! Not very usable so it's not worth flashing right now unless you want to mess around.

I am new. Is this what we have been waiting for?
If you go the Engadget website. They have a link to download a build of Froyo that supposedly works for any android device.
only for any nexus one...wrong forum dude.
For any Nexus One, not any device.
any nexus one build, not any android phone
hopefully though, our amazing froyo rom devs here can get something useful out of it
I am hoping soon to have Froyo, you got my hopes up with this post!

We already have a million froyo builds along with another million 2.1 builds. So much stuff that can be ripped from other phones.
Just need the damn kernel source form HTC now.

excluding different versions of the same rom i've only seen 4 (Avas droidX line appears to be branching off from his V line from what he's said) So we have 2 from Ava, hero's, and the new one complied from source.
Man, well sorry for the misunderstanding. The way the post reads makes it seem as though any android phone would worker with the release. It should have been a clue though when I did not see any posts about it. I have had my evo for about a month now and have really been enjoying learning about, thanks to you all, the guts of it.
I look forward to discovering and posting more but in the future I will refrain from posting news that does actually pertain to our discussion- even though I thought it did.
Thanks for the lesson.

Am I missing something? Some hidden treasure troth of custom rom goodness? I'm missing out on almost 2 million roms! (are there even that many evo's in circulation right now?)

Well, there was some overzealousness with the claimed number of Froyo builds (there are what, 3-4? now). Either way, the kernel is what is needed to get the cameras going. HTC needs to get a bit more consistent with their timetables for releasing their source - some phones take 4 months and some have only taken a few days. It's a pain in the ass.

is that referring to just this board? Because there are lots of other ROMs out there from different boards. On PPCGeeks there are a few ROMs that are not listed here, and also on Android Central, there are some that aren't mentioned here. And soon there will be a Cynanogen ROM bringing 2.2 to the EVO that may not be listed here as well, so there are some other things out there if you look for them.
Me too.......DWL

Call it my natural penchant for pessimism, but I have a feeling that they are waiting until it's too late for everyone to return their Evo's to release the source.
Cuz if they did release the source within 30 days of launch and everyone found out that the 30fps really is a hardware limit (yes I know about the dirty hacks, the devs term not mine) then we would see a mass exodus of people returning their phones for the galaxy or droidx.
stupid people with stupid posts.
I really like those people who try to root their phone, but then can't get adb working on their pc. If you can't install and use adb, you shouldn't be rooting a phone.
Last night was an interesting night for me. With the help of jt1134, of course, I was able to get a semi-working build of AOSP to load and boot up on the Mesmerize. For those of you who have not seen this, it is pretty neat stuff. This means NO TOUCHWIZ on the phone at all. Pure google goodness! What this also means right now, is a lot of work for the people involved. These guys have been really going at it lately and it is slowly paying off.
I'd like to pay credit to these guys for their work so far and all their work in the future, as I'm hope they won't be stopping any time soon.

and anyone else out there that has worked on this project that I don't know about.
Last night I got to do a very small part in helping out and I was glad to be able to be a part of this.
This required a modified kernel to be able to load and boot. Although I have built several kernels using jt's github source, this is the first time I have had to modify content and it gave me insight into some of what is going on in the kernel. It's definitely more than I had ever thought before.
Here are some screen shots that I took while running the ROM.

I will not be releasing this build, as I do not feel comfortable with it's stability just yet. I also want to get jt's approval before letting it out into the wild since I am following his lead on all of this. This was done more for discussion purposes to see what you guys think and to let you know that work is being done to give you more options than just ROMs made from stock.

I know you are all super excited about the updates, but if you look at the build number in the picture, it says 2.1-update1 ECLAIR.
jt has been working on this for 3 months. I just got the Mes to load up last night. Let's see how things go and maybe we'll start an Alpha ROM thread in the development section.

Looks like it's on the side burner for now. The good news is, the reason that it's been put on the side burner is that it seems possible that a 2.3 AOSP build may fix some of the problems that are happening in the 2.2 build. I don't have many of the details, but they've got the first steps working. As soon as there is a build that I can start to work with, I will post pics.
I would like this sooo bad. It would be awesome

it is just amasing that how many people are trying to ask the same question in many different ways.. Maybe, when the devs finally cook the honeycomb rom, they can send private invite to the forum members who didn't ask for the port. Let's those impatent people wait for a little bit.. I know that it is a little bit mean but just look at the gtab forum in last few days... flood with those questions.. And not very helpful.. in the mean time, you can always stop by a verzion or bestbuy to take a look.

This is a great thread.
I think we've all been spoiled by Rothnic and Roebeet and the rest of the devs working on the GTab. Remember when TnT Lite was getting updates daily.
I can't wait for HC and indeed Honeycreams, but it'll be worth the wait since we'll still get it before most of the official HC Tablets are even available.

I LOVE this picture! Thanks!
Btw, for those who are interested -- this is a lot harder to do as we suspect Moto did some sneaky things. I cannot get the dump the boot on my GTAB/Adam, and I have been trying. The Adam port was a cakewalk in comparison, as they had released an nvflash dump on the day of release.
I am a complete noob to this scene and, while I had been patiently awaiting the release of this honeycomb I keep hearing about, I had been avoiding posting on this topic as I can see that there has been some frustration on the part of devs being pestered by people like me who don't really know what we are talking about!
But after today, I have to speak out! I think you DEVs are nothing but a bunch of lazy bums who like to THINK and make others think that you know it all. With all the money you guys are getting paid for this, I can't believe you haven't gotten Honeycomb to us Gtab owners sooner!
Hell, I was talking to my buddy Jim down at the convenience store and he already had honeycomb. He said that it was BIG yah, yah, yah. It's not small no,no,no.
ww.youtube.com/watch?v=yDZK6H3d5bk
It was dumped right there in aisle 3. I'll get back to you EXPERTS once I find a way to get it on the g-tab.
With the release of Android 3.0 on the xoom in the wild, should I be looking out for a honeycomb based ROM?!?
*crosses fingers*
Try more looking and less posting.
Here we go again
Did you even do a forum search for honeycomb? Did you?
NO HONEYCREAMS. STOP ASKING. There are at least 5 very similar threads of other people asking the same frackin thing. If you want honeycomb so bad, overpay for a Zoom. Or wait patiently like the rest of us for a Rom to be posted. Asking over and over is not going to get it here any faster. Stop bugging the artists and let them paint.
P.S.

+1 on TheHoneyCreams!
I prefer Frosted Flakes.
Lets face it 95% ( probably 100% on XDA) of us who bought a Gtab did so to hack it to make it better faster etc. If we got Honeycream tomorrow in two days we would be posting questions about Tiramisu (Android 5.0). The devs are fantastic play with what you have today and READ posts about what you might get tomorrow.
Wait what????, i want tiramisu NOWWWW!!!!
No really, the worst thing of this post is that it is in development.

Pretty dead on, When I bought the g-tab in November I did so for potential at price range.
One of the potentials was the promise of honeycomb, but it's only been like 5 days out now. lol.
It took a month or so to get gingerbread out and even then it's still experimental, so sit back take a breath, and enjoy a very well rounded tablet (screen has yet to bother me.)
I am sure that as soon as one of the dev's get close to having HC boot they will let us know.

Hopefully some of those people will be supports of the Dev's so they get more out of there hard work. If we all donated a few bucks every major release it can add up to a lot.
Not being rich, with my last few devices that is my policy (Example, donate with a 2.2 release is stable, then when a 2.3 is stable) or when major fixes are done.
One guy said something about "if we all donate a nickel" sorta broke my heart. I guess some people don't know all the hard work put into making things available to us "hackers".

I've always appreciated the XDA Devs, and I'm sorry for the NoobStorm you're about to be blessed with!
Was on woot all day answering questions. Had good day playing with my toddler and scanning woot forums for questions. Good times, good times. A very cool and unexpected bolstering of the Gtab ranks. Welcome one and all :-D
i didnt get mine on woot, but I am a little jealous cause I just got my used GTab for 320 on eBay, they got a new one for 40 bucks less. Mine arrived yesterday, and I cant complain, looks almost new, but they got a great price for a new GTab.
Anyway, I thought I'd post some links to help them out, as i'm sure anyone who finds their way here is going to want to root and install a ROM, and I just did this last night.
First off, rooting. My tablet was already rooted, with an app called z4root. this link should help you out with that
How To – Root Your ViewSonic G-Tablet
installing clockworkmod/roms:
this was the best thread I found, it had the clockworkmod v08 files i needed at the bottom of the main post and had great instructions, they used tnt lite rom as their example.
Install ClockworkMod, a ROM, Flash Player, and the Market Fix
i went with the Vegan GingerEdition ROM and I didnt install the market the same way, but instead used a market update file for my rom, not sure if it works with other roms too. it installs with clockworkmod, just the way the rom, and most other updates are installed. I also installed flash 10.2 through the market, so you can probably skip the 10.1 version found in that thread
heres a real helpful video that pretty much walks you through the same steps found in that thread. there were a few differences though, the walkthrough recommends wiping after installing the rom, the video does it before. i did both. neither mentions the dalvik wipe, but you can find it in the advanced settings if you want to wipe it, as is recommended everywhere. heres the video, and check out his channel for a ton of gtab videos
Installing Clockworkmod and TnT Lite 4.20 on Viewsonic gTablet
hope this helps you guys out or at least saves you some time on looking for files or good walkthroughs. on a side note, my gingeredition rom got stuck at one of the startup screens on my first reboot. i rebooted back into clockwork and partitioned the drive (2048/0) as instructed in the walkthrough and its working just fine now
edit: heres another good walkthrough, have fun and try not to brick your gtabs!
Flashing the Viewsonic GTablet with VEGAn ROM and fixing the Market
Just put my nook color on ebay to grab one of these
The thing I love about this Tab - I can use different ROMs. I've played with TnT, gADAM, Vanilla and (last stop) VEGan. LOVE tinkering with my Tablet!

Sent from my Samsung-SPH-D700 using XDA App
I bought one of the first ones from Sears back in November, paid $379 for it. Sears originally only had 2 per store.
I wanted soo bad to try and put Linux on this thing. But I was one of the few that NEVER had any problems with the Tap'nTap GUI, not even the original version. As they say: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". But after using Linux for about 8 years, Android was disappointing as an operating system.
I've been scanning the Sears Outlet web site daily for one in my area. That one I would use for my Linux experimentation. Since these are the same price as one at Sears Outlet, I ordered me a second one.
It seems that it will take up to two weeks to receive these. After that, let the experimentation begin!!
New User From Woot!
I am looking forward to modding my Gtab. I have been lurking around here reading up on the things I will need to know.
Being an IT pro for over 12 years, the thought of rooting/modding this thing is exciting. I have been modding PCs and their components for years. I am very comfortable with nvflash and have recovered many a device or part (like a GPU) from a bricked status. I am also good with cell phones and other mobile devices.
To any other new members that are joining: Please do not forget to donate to the devs. For the love of all that is holy, these people dedicate time and effort into something they do not get paid for. If you use something and like it, then say thank you by shooting them a donation. If it wasn't for these guys, we'd be stuck using the crappy stock OS on these things.
Anyways, just wanted to say hello and I look forward to unlocking the full potential of this device.
