Full screen video player without status bar? - Eee Pad Transformer Themes and Apps

Is there a video player that will play full screen without showing the status bar on the buttom? Both rock player and vital player do not hide the status bar.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App

i use mobo player, and have the same issue.

I'm wondering the same thing. The stock video player hides the navigation buttons and puts tiny dark dots in place of them and hides the clock, but the bar is still there. I assume there is probably a way to do the same in a 3rd party app if it is programmed correctly for honeycomb. Still, it would be nice if there was a way to hide it all together, and then show it if you touch the screen in video player mode.

Most of the movies I watch can't be played by the stock player.

has anyone tried Pandora KM Player?

If you play the video through MyNet the staus bar will disappear and display 4 small faint dots, hardly noticeable. Also on the bottom left of the player there is a light glow which I thought was light bleed but on closer inspection seems to be part of the player background.

It's impossible (and will likely remain so) to fully hide the system bar in Honeycomb since you'd be stranded in the current app without it*. Developers can use setSystemUiVisibility() to "dim" it, but totally removing it is impossible.
*Less vital (and a bit of a derail), you'd also open up a security risk by being able to hide the bar. A malicious app could go full-screen, spoof the system bar, and trick the user into going "back" into a fake browser or such, at which point they'd steal their passwords. This is the same reason Flash shows an "Esc to exit full screen" on the desktop.

Iirc the 3.1 software will allow more flexibility over the status bar behavior, here's hoping. It is problematic that the navigation buttons are in the system bar though, lets hope they can get something workable as that bar effectively makes the 800 pixels not so 800.

The real question is: Why do people have 16:10 videos? Because unless you are bothered by 3 small dots on the black part of the video, why does it matter?

During the UI talk at IO an attendee asked if there was any way to get rid of the status bar. The reply was a hard no.

That really sucks. I hope it gets sorted soon its really annoying especially when trying to use the transformer to show off pics, it just looks shoddy with the system bar at the bottom.

I agree. Maybe an auto hide taskbar like in windows?

I dont know why it really bugs some of you. It doesnt really bother me, when it dims the buttons it isn't even noticeable.

As others have mentioned, the problem is that it takes up valuable screen real estate (~7.5%)

The reason to want it gone/hidden is simple.
Display =16:9
if Movie=16:9 then
simple math.

Yeah, but the display is 16:10, not 16:9.

And what about everyting else? PDFs, comics, photos (most are 4:3 or 3:2). They should have left one physical button for showing/hiding the bar. The way it is now - it sucks. I don't mind in only in portrait mode because there is enough space on the bottom then anyway.

They specifically mentioned "Lights Out" mode which allows you to hide the icons which turns the ones on the bottom left into glowing dots (as seen in gallery view). I understand that this still does not allow you to truly use 800 vertical pixels, but it is an improvement and it is a change related to the system bar.
Here is the video:

Yup. 10.1 inches of delicious screen goodness isn't enough for you? This transformer is pimping! Physical home button is for chumps!

I own one, and would like a couple more physical buttons(and ideally an optical trackpoint too like the newer phones).
The buttons to stop there being a constant menu bar which would let applications like remote desktop go REALLY fullscreen, and the trackpad for precise text selection.
Not major issues, but I think dropping the buttons is actually a bit Apple-esque - going for form over function (e.g. an Ipod would be easier to operate with a separate volume control, but that would make it less "clean").
I think we're a bit too quick to fling around accusations of "Apple zealot" or "Android fanatic" when people voice simple preferences...
Yup you nailed it, the home button used to be on the prototypes/show display models but it got taken off for the release versions.

[Q] System Bar Disappointment

I took hold of my transformer yesterday and love every aspect of it bar one.
The one issue that means I'm probably going to send it back is the Honeycombs inability to hide the system bar.
I really only purchased the tablet to use as a portfolio device (I'm a photographer). I wanted to take advantage of the high resolution screen to show off my images at 1280x800 but the system bar sits on top of everything totally ruining the look of images/video. Not being able to hide the system bar is a huge oversight by the Honeycomb developers and sadly probably means I'm going to have to switch to a bloody I-pad 2, which I would prefer not to do.
Does anybody know of any tricks to hide the system bar?
I dont have my transformer/honeycomb yet but when i look at images/videos on my xperia mini pro using the gallery app they are full screen.
You can try using LauncherPro because it has a 'hide notification bar' setting in the preferences. Not sure if it just works for the homescreen or all apps.

There are apps that let you force full screen mode.
Also I use it for showing my portfolio and the default gallery fades the icons. Besides I can tell you showing your portfolio on this generally is not a good idea, unless its just a quick show, don't ever use it for interviews.

I've seen the hiding of the icons but it still leaves a large black bar across the bottom of the screen. The images need to fill the screen.
Why is it not a good idea to use this as a portfolio apart from the system bar problem?
Also I've tried a few other launchers ADW and Launcher pro neither of them can hide the system bar.

It's good for a quick show at lets say a get together, but for an interview or client the screen really isn't big enough to see the details for most people. Maybe you can because you're used to it, but other people tend to have trouble with it.

haven't looked at specific gallery apps that do it but I know a few other apps I use that can do it.
EDIT: The use of the tablet for portfolio needs is from experience by the way an instance where I did find it useful if I went to some launch party or similar to show it to people or when I'm touching base with clients to give them a rough idea of what it will look like (wireframes and such), I do photography and graphic design by the way.
Sadly I think I am going to have to accept defeat on this.
I'm sure someone will create a launcher that can hide the System bar in the future but I don't want to wait around for that to happen.
I'ts such a shame as otherwise it's a lovely tablet but with the system bar in the way the images will only ever be 1280 x 700 with a black line across the bottom.
I can not find any apps that force full screen they all leave the system bar in place.
Quick Pic was brilliant in fullscreen in Android 2.2 but Honeycomb has rendered it less effective.

In the end it's more do you want android or iOS.
I do however own an iPad 2 and I gotta say the transformers screen is equal in quality, and has an edge over the iPad even with the black bar due to resolution and size.
I'm having issues with the system bar too. I'm trying to create a PDF brochure/demo but the 50px bar ***** up the full zoom mode as the PDF pages are 1280x800.
I'm using ezPDF - does anyone know an alternative which can force full screen mode and hide the system bar?

true, however, returning a device that is 3 weeks old, with brand new firmware, because 50pixels worth of the screen is displayed when you are demo-ing photos is a tad ridiculous. Demoing hi-res photography on 1280x800 10'' screen is already ridiculous, but i digress. How much extra detail is the client really going to experience from 50 pixels worth... come on now, its just plain ol' *****ing. And the smooth reference of 'well the ipad2 doesn't do that' rubbed me the wrong way. Ipad2 is a great device, maybe the OP should return his TF and get the ipad2
I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab recently and was seriously bummed out to see the retarded behavior of the photo gallery.
The built-in gallery works right on my Samsung Android phone. And it hits all the right notes on my Galaxy Tab 7" as well. Just as it did on my ipad.
Honeycomb gallery is extremely dumb. It just makes me mad every time I have to use it.
I guess I'll have to just write my own. Watch for it on Android Market in a few weeks. I might as well start taking feature requests and name suggestions for the app.

VolumeSwipe pre-release

I made an app that lets you adjust volume in a number of apps (including Netflix, Hulu+, Gallery Video, Amazon Video, Amazon mp3) by swiping along the side of the screen. You can also turn on boost mode to adjust volume up to 140%.
Here's the apk. It's free, but does contain an ad for a paid app of mine. Since it's Open Source, you can build your own copy without this ad.
I know there is already an app that lets you adjust volume by swiping, but I thought it would be nicer to have this active only in a few apps, so it doesn't get in the way in other apps.
I eventually hope to add a feature where you can select additional apps to the list where VolumeSwipe is active, but that's for the future. But if there is some popular video/audio playing app that I've left out, let me know.
This seems cool. What's the other app you're talking about?
thanks for the work you put in.

VolumeControl hides visually, but of course it's still there even when hidden, so it will get in the way if you want to tap on something in that area of the screen in an app. Ditto for my VolumeSwipe, except that the problem is minimized by the fact that VolumeSwipe is only active in a few apps.
Also, I think the narrowness of the VolumeControl bar, even on its widest setting, might make it harder to hit (though I haven't tried VolumeControl specifically on our Kindle, since I haven't rooted our Kindle due to DMCA concerns). VolumeSwipe provides a much wider bar. I think that's probably nicer if, say, you are watching a movie at the gym.
Sounds nice. You say "a number of apps (including...)". Could we have a complete list of the apps you include? BTW, you mention that your slider is narrower than Vol Control. Vol control's slide width is adjustable in the settings

I don't know what you mean by auto hide. Right now, when you let go of the swipe area, it disappears. Or at least it's supposed to.
Not disappearing on mine for some reason but thats what I meant by auto hide. If you made a invisible option that would be a good solution /feature to solve my issue and anyone else who may come across it. It's a great app to have on the KF though especially for use with youtube (every vid is recorded @ diff vol levels) ... Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately, 1.01 was buggy.
I think I fixed some bugs in 1.02.
I recommend uninstalling 1.01, then rebooting, then installing 1.02.
Unfortunately, due to a bug in Android's package manager (which I reported to Google), it is necessary to turn off VolumeBoost before installing a new a version. I have not been able to find an easy way around this.
NOTE: USE BOOST ONLY AT YOUR OWN RISK. IT COULD DAMAGE SPEAKERS (especially if you turn off the non-uniform boost option in the settings).
It's officially in the Appstore.

notification bar auto hidden

I bought one smartpad850 and I noticed with surprise that the notification bar when viewing videos and photos disappear by itself and then reappears when you press the display.
Why is not this option in our TAB Asus TF700?
To do this use GMD but it does not automatically but I have to manually intervene.

ASUS' decision. GMD can hide it, but on restoration of the status bar the original default wallpaper will be put back. Not an option for me, drives me insane. I do not find the bar all that irritating for what I do normally...

I didn't say that. Your question was why it was not an option. Answer: ASUS' decision.
Elaborating: a decision by ASUS that is embedded in the framework is not that easy to reverse (many people are annoyed by the persistent notifications of mounted storage -- have you seen a solution to that "issue"? Or the notification telling us to "Use keyboard to type words" -- no sh**, Sherlock!). You could, of course, give it a shot at fixing this yourself. I think the best (and, currently, essentially the only) solution to this 'problem' is hopping over to a AOSP/AOKP/CM-based mod, although you will lose out many other things in the process. That's a much more open platform with a lot of tweaks available out ot the box.
If you want to educate yourself and give it a try, you would have a pretty much perfect base to work with: the freshy-abandoned-but-available-for-pick-up CleanROM 2.4 base. Take a look at the notifications while you're at it.
The CleanROM has the bar automatically hidden?

Nope, none of the stock-based ROMs can do that. As I said, only AOSP/AOKP/CM for you.

You can force any app that exists to be fullscreen by tapping a cyan-colored circle that appears when you press the app switcher button, the circle appears below the X button in the app card. But I think OP means having a feature that crops out videos to fill the entire screen, that feature needs official support to work.

I think there is some confusion between "filling the display", and changing the aspect ratio. I'm interested in this device. I went to Best Buy and held one in my hand. It's impressive, but it's shaped funny. Tall and slim. Great if you're a model, unusual if you're a smart phone. If you "fill the display", (which is really your only choice), you're going to crop the image. This is due to the unusual dimension of the display. I don't know of any other devices, TVs, tablets, or phones, with similar relative dimensions. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but I am saying it's a bit unusual. I haven't taken the leap yet because I need an unlocked, dual sim device, but while I wait, I wonder if the Note 8 will have a more conventionally shaped display........
