Hi all, I have noticed an odd issue on my G2x that is not a huge problem but I wanted to see if any one had any thoughts on this.
First, I have a very old sim card, it actually has the VoiceStream logo on it. And the lock screen actually lists Vstream sometimes, and sometimes it has T-Mobile/VStream.
I've noticed that I get either 4G or 2G, but never 3G. It's even shown G before. I usually get 4G in my 14th floor office in downtown Chicago outside and some parts of my house, 2G in other places. I've tried speed tests downtown, and I got as high as 12mbps, but usually 5-7mbps. I'm just wondering if there is anything that can be done so I get 3G instead of 2G in certain areas.
Thanks
the phone will never show a 3g logo. It will only show 4g and 2g. And for that mattery t-mobiles "4g" is actually HSPA+ which is the upgraded version of HSPA. they are both 3g technology.

My phone has rebooted 4 times since 5:30 eastern. And weather widget is bouncing around town to town. 3g has dropped to 1x once and I haven't left couch.

My 4G dropped out for the first time today (following the fix late last night Eastern time) at about 8:55 pm EDT. I'm in Maryland.
I'm seeing a situation with LTE where the handset can TX, but it gets no RX from the other end. If I force it back to EvDO (over eHRPD, using "CDMA Auto (PRL) in the Network app), I get a solid connection, no dropouts and fairly typical EvDO speeds.
After a good morning / afternoon on LTE, it seems the network (or the handset?!) is fouling up again. Anyone else?

I'm over in Northern VA. This morning i switched and then left it on CDMA + LTE/EvDO auto, and i even re-enabled eHRPD (for the first time in weeks) and got solid service all the way on my commute to work (Springfield to Dulles) streamed internet radio the entire time never dropped out once. After reading on here about people getting 4G back i figured i'd give it a spin. Then later on in the afternoon i started to see the dreaded "Full bars but no data signal" CONSTANTLY and its still going on, then i flip over to CDMA (auto PRL) and switch to Rev. A which ive been using for the most part of the last month or so and i get a FLAWLESS connection. It locks on to 3G and does NOT disappear EVER!
I really hope they get all this straightened out soon. I had decent hopes for the new radio, and i'm getting little result out of it. Until then, i'm perfectly content staying on CDMA (auto PRL), because it works all of the time.
Yes 4g is very sporadic to say the least. I may have a signal with 3 bars, but I'm still unable to use data. This happens like forty percent of the time. 3g s still stable, and I have tried both radios, with the same results.
I am not in a 4g area (yet, this summer though) but my 3G did come back late last night however, its been very touch and go today. Yesterday I thought it was because I had flashed some different kernels and I am a baby at this but then when I read about the outage I realized it actually wast me! I am guessing from the back and forth from 1X to 3G they are still working on it though. Hope its fixed soon. My wifi stinks at home!

somewhat off topic but not deserving of its own thread: ever since i bought this phone the day it came out it seems like 2 bars of lte means you might have a signal, ive rarely seen it with 1 bar on lte, and to get reliable data you need 3 or 4. fairly solid today though, in and around chicago.

I covered a lot of ground today: LA, Chicago, and Connecticut. All with solid 4g while I was in those places.
I'm in the Chicago suburbs and my 4G has been sketchy all day. I've got 4 bars but the speeds aren't up to par.
My 4G has been sporadic. Similar symptoms as others' posted here. 3 bars and no data connection.
M.
I'm in Baltimore as well and have had rock solid 4G all day.
I'm in Indianapolis, and while we don't quite have 4G I did notice something is up with 3G.
Under the menu>settings>about phone>network it shows: CDMA + EVDO Rev A.
Even though eHRPD is enabled.
So I'm still getting neutered 3G (no data+voice simul).
They must still be up to something.
Yeah I switched to eHRPD earlier in day yesterday and was working fine til the evening. I am not in 4g area but fairly close to one, but haven't seen 4g speeds yet. But back on Rev A now.
I just got a "network connection reset by peer" error so must be having some connectivity issues.

Middle Tennessee here,
While at work, I have had in the past a very stable 4G connection. And when I commute back to my home I am outside the range of the nearest 4G market but I've always bounced to the 3G network under the defaulted eHRPD settings with some latency of course. I have had my device since launch and I am running jcase's original custom ruu for root/s-off which has been running just fine.
Since the outage while at my home I am constantly transitioning between 3G and 1X with the occasional dreaded "all bars" and no network connection but if I reboot my device I have a 3G service restored...
Same goes for the transition back from 3G to 4G....commuting back to work, I know I should be acquiring the 4G network while coming to work and the best I get is the 3G network again all while my device is set for the eHRPD modem setting. Now if I reboot my device while in the known 4G market area I get my 4G back....
Still looks borked to me even if the Big Red Boys say that their service is back up....
My phone was switching betwen 4G and 1X and never went to 3G at all. I cannled Verizon and they said that the handoff from 4G to 3G was turned off due to the outage. Apparently the outage had something to do with switching between networks.
He had me do a battery pull which did bring 3G back (restart and airplane mode hadn't helped me). He did say I might get stuck again probably in 1X and to try airplane mode then.
I guess they are still working out issues.
I live in the middle of TN and I was pleased to see my 4G come back today. Just in time, too. I was able to stream the draft almost flawlessly while at work.
----edit---
im a dumbass
I'm writing because, on my first road trip with the Thunderbolt, there were a lot of places I expected to have some kind of internet service and couldn't get anything. On AT&T I could always fall back on GPRS if I had any signal, yet there's a lot of places I'll have 5 bars, but no 4G, 3G, or 1X icon up top, and be totally unable to get any data at all.
Does the Thunderbolt lack some capability other Verizon phones have? Is CDMA itself unable to be used for data transport? Is EVDO the "slowest" data speed Verizon offers? What options are there for being in the boonies wanting the most minimal service possible?
Thanks,
rektide
I've used data on 1x before so I know its possible. You might want to make sure you have data roaming turned on. You might have been on sprint's network.
I've been suprised a couple of times by lack of 3g/4g signal. It has been indoors both times, but really expected to have it. One time I was at the mall and only had 1x, turned on my time warner hotspot that runs on sprint's network and got 2 bars of 4g wimax which is supposed to have better building penetration.
Go figure.
I know this is a question, but it's also the only Skyrocket forum. Sorry...
Does the Skyrocket get straight 3G reception? The AT&T Vivid does not. H+ and above work great, but in straight "H" areas the Vivid reverts to edge. I'm considering returning the Vivid and getting a Skyrocket because of this. Also, how's the battery life on the Skyrocket? The Vivid's is abysmal.
Thanks!!
Both the Vivid and Skyrocket work on 2G, 3G and LTE.
When the indicator says 4G without the LTE under it you are on 3G/UMTS/H/H+ whatever...
If you lose the 4G then you are on 2G/GSM/EDGE.
The LTE indicator only works for data. When you make a voice call the LTE will go away because the Ue falls back to 3G or even 2G if necessary. You can still talk and surf at the same time, but it will be at 2G or 3G speeds depending on where you fallback.
Thanks for the reply!
Unfortunately, that's not the way my Vivid is working. I have confirmed that my Vivid drops to Edge in several areas that my HD2 retains 3G. Plenty of bars, so good signal. It's just that the Vivid doesn't seem to stay on 3G in less than H+ areas. Lots of people reporting the same issue.
As far as talking and surfing simultaneously on edge/2G: Maybe it's different in your area, but getting an "E" ALWAYS coincides with failure to surf and talk and the same time here. I do believe you need 3G to do that.
What I'm looking for is a first hand report from a Skyrocket user about 3G reception in less than an H+ area.
Thanks!

At the basement of our office for supplies, I revert to 4G on my Skyrocket. Once I go upstairs, LTE comes back. I can confirm making a phone call and surfing the web in the basement on pure 4G (3G+).

Thanks! My Vivid works great on 4G too. My problem is that it drops to Edge in areas where my HD2 stays on 3G. I'm not sure why; some people are reporting the Vivid doesn't recieve pure 3G. I have no idea what--if any--the difference is between 3G and 3G+.
How's the battery lfe on your Skyrocket?
Yeah, my bad...you can't talk and surf at the same time on 2G/EDGE.
And sadly I have great coverage at my house. And I have not had my Samsung long enough to compare it to the Vivid for reception or battery life. But when you fire up these big screens and start hitting the LTE juice it can really drop.
I am not sure what people are saying about "pure 3G". All the H/H+ is just for data. I only know of 1 flavor of 3G that supports voice calls.
I've noticed this only at night time when I'm at home. My phone will be on Edge instead of 4G. Data is fine because I'm on wifi but if I turn wifi off, I will have no data and it will not connect to 4G.
I live in an area without 4G LTE, but we do have HSPA+. I have a few iPhones in my house also and they are not, nor have they ever, switched to Edge in this area. So why does HOX keep doing it? Is there something I need to do like turn of LTE or something?

I have yet to see mine display anything but 4G, even when my signal is very low
I have run into the same problem as you, and likewise my iphone 4S never went to edge nor had a signal issue where I live. I think i'm going to take my phone back to AT&T and either ask for another phone or a refund. I really like this phone but having no signal at home is unacceptable.
Some of my "android" co-workers have said it may have something to do with the battery profile? Since we don't have root we can't check it but. But something about the phone is thinking "I don't use 4g at night" so it shuts it down to save battery... anyone?
My first HOX would never switch to "E", but always showed "4G", except when it would lose all bars and show a small X. I finally swapped it out yesterday for another one and the new one hasn't lost the signal completely yet, so I'm guessing there are a few bad HOX's out there with buggy radio firmware.
I'd keep swapping out units until you find one with stable cell reception. My new one finally switched to E today, but that's because I'm barricaded in a fortified complex with no cell penetration whatsoever. Seems to be working as expected.
mine does the same. I live in a low reception area and my 4s can hold on to the hspa signal while the one x goes between edge, no service, 4g. Love the phone but I need my phone to work at home.
Anyone noticed any trouble with the attached LTE handoff to HSPA+? I noticed last two days my LTE handoff to LTE to hspa, sticks there with full bar but no internet connections. Turning on airplane mode and off picks up LTE again.
I have not had any problem at all with hand offs on this phone. I am in and out of LTE, several memorized Wifi hotspots, HSPA+ and two different indoor microcells I have at home and work. This phone just handles it, I never have to reset anything. I have had a couple of other LTE phones that did not fair nearly as well with the hand offs, the HTC One X I had was almost unusable because of the hand off issues it had between towers.
Who knows, there may be issues with a specific tower or something. Is this geographically isolated to one area or is it spread out everywhere you go?
Good Luck.
