The MyLibrary application is great for reading ebooks, but lacks help and options...
I've just received my SD card and decided to move all my media to it, including books.
I removed the folder I was using for books on the main storage, and created a new folder, eBooks, containing a selection of epub files, on the SD card.
However, when I start MyLibrary, I still see the list of books it had before on the main storage, and none from the SD card. If I try to open one it crashes back to the home screen (no big surprise, since the book I tried to open doesn't exist any more).
How can I clean up this mess, remove the old books from the list, and add the books from the SD card?
And while I'm on the subject of MyLibrary, the label "Uncategorized" on the left hand side implies that there can be some sort of categorization of the books. Is that possible somehow?

Yup.
Just click on the "Edit" button (top right), and you will se a "+" sign appears on the "category" side - using that, you will be able to add categories (like magazines, comics, novels, whatever) and drag books into them.
Needs a night mode *shakes fist at Asus* I may just go back to using the Nook app for my books.

Ah! Awesome, thanks. Not an intuitive UI though, in my opinion. Still, at least the actual book reader seems pretty good.
And I've managed to fix my book-relocation issue too.
I went to Home -> Settings -> Applications -> Storage Use, found MyLibrary in the list (which would have been easier if it was an alphabetical list!), then hit the Clear Data button. Then when I restarted MyLibary it re-scanned the storage & SD card to find my books.
Anyone know how to EXCLUDE directories from MyLibrary? Or specify which ones it should look in?
Thanks!

Yes absolutely, the number one thing I miss from the native ebook app on the galaxy tab. Although I think this app "Screen filter" will help

Hi all.
I wrote an application that replaces the Library Manager that comes with the new Manila e-book reader tab (which is not of much use, if you don't have an account for Borders).
After installation, the application will start when you click the "Library" menu of the new reader tab.
You can use the application to access the books in your library, but also to import books you already have on your PDA into the new Manila tab.
It will import e-books in the .epub format, but also in lots of other formats.
The Manila tab will only show the ones in .epub format, but from this new library you can access the e-books in the other formats as well (at least, if the appropriate reader application is installed on your PDA).
This application assumes that each of your e-books is located in its own folder.
If an image file is located in a folder that contains an e-book, the application will automatically assume that the image represents the bookcover.
If an .opf file is located in the folder (which is a standard format for saving metadata with e-books), the application will automatically get the title, the name of the author and the name of the publisher of the e-book from that .opf file.
See the screenshots to get an idea of the look and feel of the application.
To install the application on your PDA, download the .cab file, copy it to your PDA and run it there.
Release history:
In version 0.3 the robustness was enhanced significantly.
In version 0.2 a number of small user-interface enhancements were made.
Thank you. Very useful program.
Thx...

Djurkash, does your ROM include the Manila e-book reader tab?
My application only works if the reader tab is available (and working).

Hi.
I just posted version 0.2; the flow through the user interface is more Manila-like now.
@OABsoftware, sure it does... like I said, it happens when hitting library button
tried to reinstall, but it's the same...is it possible that problem is caused cause I changed my book.db file through ebookindexer?
I'm really liking this app...I have a request however, is it possible to have this app work with the other native built-in e-book functions as well?
What is happening is even if you click on the 'Menu' > Shop or Account Settings, it is redirecting to your app. I would prefer if the app was launched only when you clicked on the 'Library' link. That way people who have Adobe & Borders accounts can still get books via those means also.
Thanks

does look to be that.. I had the same error and changed back to be the original and it works fine. import is great, even with all the books in one folder..
It also beats the 20 limit.. just added all the books from my sd card
need to go back to calibre and redo them to fit the new system
@fards,
I confirm this, have restored original book.db, and now is working flawlessly...

Anyone know of manga/comic viewing apps for the android?
I used to use Cloud Reader on the iPad, but this app is not available on Android as far as I can tell.

Comics or Mango work for me.
There are a few that I use.
Mangawhat : this program reads directly off of mangareader.com and mangafox.com and a few others.
the other two that I use to read off my memory card are:
SCViewer
jjcomic viewer
i was just using xcomic which i found worked well, it had a database of free comics and they all save to your device if you download. You can double tap on a scene and then tap the right of the screen to have it take you through square by square.
I did a lot of research before porting my CBR's over to my TF. Of everything I was able to track down, I found Perfect Viewer (< Market Link) to be the best fit for me.
It looks good on the TF in portrait mode (you can use landscape but without the ability to display dual page, side-by-side, it is less practical). There is a bigger learning curve with Perfect Viewer, but it has really great customization once you get elbows deep into the settings. You can adjust various page transition effects, loading functions, slideshow settings, set page as wallpaper for the TF, etc.. Some things I learned by trial and error (such as touching up at the very top middle of the portrait screen to go back to the bookshelf or assigning doc titles to the tops of each page and page numbers to the bottom). If you elect to use it, you may want to turn off some things such as all of the "load last" options.
All in all, it's a good fit for me. I loaded up a MicroSD with my entire collection of MAD Magazines (Issue #1 to present), and every issue of Zenoscope's Grimm Fairy Tales to test for load issues and the TF handled the bulk well (though you can toggle "Low Memory Mode" if necessary). Once I was comfortable that I had found my reader, I loaded up the rest of my reading fare.
Manga Watcher is my favorite. It links you to several websites to download from automatically. Just input the series and it'll show you how many chapters are out.
Just remember when you first open it you gotta change the setting to watch it in portrait mode and to set it so when you tap the screen, it'll change the page.
i'm using Perfect Viewer, i like the way it's supposed to work, but i'm having a problem setting the bookshelf to my microsd card...i'm using /removable/microsd/comics as the set path but it keeps saying it can't find the folder.....is it possible to set the bookshelf to a microsd card or do you have to use the internal storage?

My collection is on a MicroSD so I know it works. I use the same address as you (/removable/microsd/comics). Here's a few things you could try:
1. Verify that the files are in the directory you listed.
2. Make sure you spelled the address correctly. If any folders have caps in their name then use the same caps. Make sure you didn't type a "\" instead of a "/". The address in my "Manual input" field is as follows, "/Removable/MicroSD/Comics" (I use caps in folder names.)
3. Check to see that the MicroSD card is, in fact, working.
4. You're using *.CBR and *.CBZ files, correct? Not PDF?
I know the things I listed seem simple, but I can't tell you how many times I tore my hair out trying to figure out something and there was a simple solution that had eluded me during that moment.
caps is the key...
thanks, should have known that might be it.
Droid Comic Viewer is good if you don't need a lot of extra features.
is there any way to increase the size of the bookshelf in prefect viewer? In order to see the books a bit larger, tried the pinch zoom, didn't do anything and can't find an option for that.

Unfortunately, no; at least none that I know of. You could always send a suggestion to the creator through the Android Market. I plan on sending a few myself (such as calling up a warning dialog box before completely backing out of the application when hitting the back button; I hate having to relaunch because I went back too far).
I would like to be able to zoom in as well. As it stands, I have to bring up the comic to see the cover, then tap the upper most, middle of the top of the screen to go back to the bookshelf.
I do like that you can see your entire collection, then view it split it up based on the folder layout you set up on the MicroSD card by clicking on the "catagory" button at the top of the bookshelf. I have a huge collection so being able to dedicate the bookshelf to specific folders on the card makes finding things easier.

But we need to know the manga title beforehand. It's hard to discover new manga there.
So, I tried my first ePub book from my library today. Figured out downloading it on the tablet, but made the mistake of opening it with MyLibrary. I hadn't used this stock app at all until now, as all my reading has been things I've purchased or downloaded for free in Google Books.
It is, in a word, unusable.
It flickers constantly and doesn't respond to touches on the screen 50% of the time. It's not like I have a staggering number of documents on my Transformer -- it's only detecting a grand total of 45 things, almost all of which I would never want to open with it. Unfortunately, there's no way to limit it to a specific folder branch, but I digress.
My problem is that having opened my ePub file with MyLibrary, even though I intentionally didn't choose a default application on opening it from File Manager, it now defaults to opening in MyLibrary, even after a reboot. I've confirmed there are no defaults set for either MyLibrary or File Manager, and indeed even downloaded an app that listed all defaults on my system, and removed the only two that it found.
Still, the ePub will now only open with MyLibrary.
How--without rooting or wiping--can I get this hateful application either disabled or unlinked so File Manager will allow me to open the book in another app? I have other ePub-capable apps (eg. Nook) installed, so it must be possible to get my book into another app, but I can't for the life of me figure out how.
Easy, if you have Nook installed then go into file Manager, tap on the Nook folder then you will see MyDocuments folder. Move all your epubs into that folder and open the Nook App. Top Left select "My files" then hit the refresh icon top right. All your epubs should populate the screen.
Oh yeah, My Library is a piece of junk . . . lol
Just go to Settings > Applications > Manage applications > All. Scroll down to the Mylibrary app, select it and you should see 'Launch by default' there. Select 'Clear defaults'.

Dear all,
I am trying to set up a TF101 tablet (with android ICS) to use as ebook reader for my mother and since she is computer illiterate I am trying to make it as simple as possible. Since we do not live in the same country I am trying to make it as simple as possible for her so I am trying to find a way to sync books from afar. So far so good, since there are many apps to do that but here starts my problem. Eventually I realized that I have a lot of books and eventually I will send her more so I need somehow to categorize them so she will access them easier than scrolling to a huge list of books. I found out that Mantano reader supports categories but as far as I can tell only manually. the same goes with most ebook readers that I know. I suppose a work around would be tagging but due to the different formats and many files I would prefer to avoid that (not to mention that tags usually do not show up nicely (like in shelves) on the ebook reader)
Is there a way, an app or something that will allow me to sync books directly to categories on the tablet? or create multiple shelves? For example to have a folder "cooking" and a folder "literature" on the tablet and on dropbox (for example) and sync to the tablet and show up immediately on their respective categories on the ebook reader? or any other application?
Thanks in advance for your help!
EDIT:
I found out that I can create different profiles for the same app with Titanium backup, which could be helpful in my case to use the same book reader and have in one instance some books and in another instance other books, I saw also that there is a widget to change from profile to profile but my question is, can I create a shortcut (not necessarily a widget) that by pressing it will change the profile A and start the app and another shortcut that will change the profile B and start the app? if yes how??
Thanks for all the help!
Since I edited I wanted to bring it to top so people will see it again... I hope someone has an answer... Thank you!
I think I understand what you want to do in general - set everything up on your end, then your mother simply opens the app and finds a neatly organized bookshelf arranged by catagory. And you want to be able to add books as you go.
To be honest, if your mother is really "computer iliterate" I don't think you can do this.
Look maybe at a way to remotley sync two tablets (I have no idea if this is possible). This way you globally manage the whole tablet and your mother does not need to worry about drop box or anything. All she needs to do is open the reader.
Also, on a side note, if you have not already purchased the tablet consider buying her a 7" tablet, I find them MUCH more comfortable for reading.
In fact now that I think about it, look into a Kindle. I've never used one, but I understand they are designed for simplicity of use and I understand that their ereader app is very good at syncing across devices (but maybe only for books purchased through Amazon)
Re: [Q] ebook manager and or Titanium backup
If she just wants it for reading, an e-ink reader is so much better. Battery will last much longer, much easier on the eyes, and you could still manage it on-line.
As it is, I would suggest using something like Google Drive or Drop Box or whatever - organise the books into folders. Easy to find and select to be opened by the reading app.

Thanks for your replies but you both are missing the point.
I know that you can create folders in the file system and go through it until you find what you want, but it has nothing to do with what I am trying to do...
I am trying to sync categories directly to the ebook reader. Kindle app has a very good sync option but does not support categories (as far as I know). And the tablet exists already.
As I asked in another thread, could I use tasker to create a shortcut to change titanium data profile and launch ebook reader at the same time? that way I could create 2 profiles for the same reader and have different books.
Thanks again.
You can create the categories by folder is what I'm suggesting - inside the cloud storage (which would sync, which is what you want to do, yes), and being that they would be stored in the cloud they would sync automatically - she would just need to open it on her end and select a book from the folder and open it - no need for different app profiles or anything. You could just have an account for the cloud storage separately called "books for mom" and put in whatever she wants and update whenever.
That's a simple solution that would do everything you want.
Thanks for your reply again. It will not do exactly what I need as it will require to go through the file manager, locate the folder, locate the book. Even if I set the file manager to start on the specific folder the look and feeling will not be of an ebook reader as the files will have a generic icon and not the book cover icon (if you know any file manager that can read book covers form pdf and epub, and mobi if possible, then I will try it immediately).
I am trying to make things as easy as possible as I am not going to be around to help and from the phone helping is a mess. a file manager will not index the books after that by author, title, recently open etc but if you know any that can handle book covers, I am willing to try.
Thanks
I found a solution, still not exactly what I had in mind but it will do. I had decided that the only way was to use tags in order to short the books the way I wanted but while I was playing with Mantano reader I found out that besides tags they also can show up the folders the books are in! So I can sync with dropbox and then set only these two folders in Mantano reader to import books from. and I say it is not exactly what I had in mind because it shows the full path and I cannot set it as the direct view when the reader starts... Still, it is good enough!
anyone dealing with indexing service draining battery?
I had it on the first day I got the phone.
From what I understand it got to do with being able to search your phone quicker.
What i did to get rid of it was delete all pdfs i had on me sd card and also disable search category in s finder.
To disable s finder search slide down on the notification panel, select s finder, now touch the 3 dots and select search category and untick all apps. Now reboot your phone and it should go away.
Hope that helps

Can I remove s search and quick connect from notification menu without root? I do not use them and they occupy lots of space.

Is there a way we can feed this back to Samsung? I really feel like I am using a beta machine at the moment with all the bugs and defects around. only managed to score 12 hours end-to-end yesterday and thats with very light usage.. Sigh...
Found the issue - It was a PDF file but a Sensitive Password enabled PDF file that the Index Service got held up on.
Arggh.. Not sure why the Index Service will enumerate all the PDF files even though the search is turned off. I've rar'ed these up and issue has stopped for over a day now (use to come on every few hours or at random).
