Hello I have the inspire and am wanting to use the wifi hotspot for my laptop. but when i go to enable it its says Tethering is not enabled...
Is there away i get around from having to spend more money to get it activated, am wanting to keep the stock rom. I havent customized Hopefully someone can help and have detailed instructions. Thanks!!!!!!!
There's a thread to get it working on the stock-unrotted rom, but it appears it's not foolproof.
My suggestion is to root and get on a optimized stocker if you like the original "feel" since those rom's have tethering enebled.
Tx
Sorry for the stupid question but what do you mean by root???

Rooting - most basic definition is that it gives you access to parts of your phone that you aren't supposed to have so you can do things you aren't supposed to do. For example - free tethering on big bad ATT. Check out the guide posted by Wild Child.

Here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960058) is the thread to enable wifi tether on stock-unrooted. you'll need to roll your own APN
Kind of a newbie question, but I saw people mention here that some roms have tethering enabled.
I'm using Inspired Saga (will probably switch to Inspired Ace soon) and I don't think it enables tethering on its own. Will I have to switch to another rom that has tethering enabled, or is it possible to enable it for any rom you use once you have rooted your phone? Thanks!
Edit: Wait, it totally works now. It definitely didn't before, haha.

A friend is looking to get this phone, and asked me about tethering
I have been rooting for a while, so I know the basics, but as I have an EVO & Epic, I haven't paid much attention to this model
I saw the threads showing it has been rooted.
Can I simply direct him to root the device with the one click, and use the Wifi Tethering apk?
Or does it also need a kernel that supports tethering
Basically, I want to make sure he can enable the tethering via root, before I advise him on the purchase
...and yes, I do know that AT&T are cracking down on the tethering

not another tethering thread.... search before you post.... Once you root, you can tether, by freezing the TetheringManager.apk... Then your good to use the built in Moble AP... or you can use something like Wireless tether for root users

Thanks, I was actually still searching after I posted, as the first couple tethering threads didn't seem to know, but I did find the answer in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1082294
Hi - I'm no developer, just a fan. I've read all the rules, terms, threats about what happens if you don't SEARCH first - guys I've done it all and for a long time. I have been studying up on how to root my MoPhoton 4g since I got it last August. I think I'm finally ready....but now I'm afraid I'm too late. I got involved in that soak test, which installed 2.3.5. Now, if I've searched/read acs and xda correctly (and other less intelligent sites), here's where I am:
There is no way to downgrade from 2.3.5
Shabbypenguin's wonderfully simple and sweet One Root won't do the trick on 2.3.5 (and boy did I try it MANY times). Had correct drives installed, etc...but no go. I assume you guys know what I'm talking about, but I can and will paste what the script read if you need me too. Short story...got all the way to "you should have root"....but I don't.
Currently the only way to do it is with a root method called Torpedo....which I don't know enough about yet but I'm about to get into it...
And finally, even if I get root, I won't have bootloader, again, because of 2.3.5.
Sound about right so far? If so, here's my big question:
If I can ONLY root for now, will I obtain the benefits I am looking for (mainly increasing/unleashing the SPEED I know this phone is capable of, and fixing whatever problem has always caused this phone to flicker it's wifi on and off and on and off constantly all the time, even in the same location....it drives me up the wall! Also, I'd like to get free wireless hotspot too, cause if you're gonna dream, dream big.
Thanks guys
I got a little confused reading your post, so sorry if this isn't the answer you are looking for...
Rooting would help you in a lot of ways, but the full potential of the phone is unlocked with custom roms and kernels...
For wifi on off, go to settings>wireless and network> wifi, and then press menu, select "advanced"...and see "wifi sleep policy" is set to "never"...

Photon root, bootloader, 2.3.5
Thanks for the response. Allow me to clarify:
Yes, I do want to root and install CM 7 or CM9, but if I can't unlock bootloader that's not possible....correct? If so, I'm hoping someone will tell me I'm wrong about one or more of my earlier assumptions (see bulleted list in OP).
Sorry, but I do not know the way around locked bootloaders...my device has an unlocked bootloader, and this makes job fairly simple...
Does you device have a subforum at xda? If so, then ask this over there, and you shall receive specific help there...
Or wait here for someone with more experience with locked bootloaders...
(P.s. look on over at youtube, you may find an answer)

Ok so i've been looking around here and i've seen people say the best tethering app is WiFi tether. But heres my question, On my x2 i was required to change my radio card settings. Change some numbers around and such. This allowed me to stealth tether, I'm wondering if this WiFi tether app is trackable?
And about rooting, All i'm seeing for vzw rooting is what seems to be flashing the "stock rom" that is rooted and not rooting your current system. So am i going to lose my data and have to start over? And is this something thats being worked on? Because with my x2 it was a 1 click root and it didn't change anything on my phone besides adding the root. My phone stayed on the stock rom with nothing being changed. Just kinda wondering, i haven't taken the time to look threw roms so i'm not sure what i want to run on this phone yet. But tethering is a must for me
Thanks in advance

I just installed the rooted stock rom over my default non-rooted install and everything has worked fine with no data loss. I did that mostly because I don't know how to format my phone through Odin. What I did exactly to get root.
As for wifi tether what I did was install the version of the app from the Play Store and then set my phone profile to the Galaxy Nexus. I used the version that was available from the code site in my Thunderbolt before and I have not been "caught" yet. So I would say you're good to go. While I haven't tried it with encryption, I did try to see if my Thunderbolt could connect to my Galaxy S III. It did and after a quick speed test I knew everything was working well (got a 101ms ping with 5mbps down and ~1mbps up).

ok sounds good. So then one more thing i guess. If the wifi tether isn't trackable how do they "catch" people doing it? is it downloading speeds or what? because if they have no real way i'm just going to use my tether on my x2 to download the needed files for rooting the s3 lol
*edit*
also is there an irc channel for the verizon phone and such? and i saw something about "not tripping the flash counter" what does that mean? lol
ok so rooting is done all looks good. Hoping the stealth of this tethering is good lol. Now to wait for a good rom
Can use stock hotspot app
You can also use the stock hotspot app.
Folks have been reporting that if you use a 3rd party launcher widget like this one Tether Widget the the stock hotspot apps works without checking to see if your paying for the "feature".
I've tested this my self and it works fine.

Ok so new issue, i can not turn off cmda, i am in evdo only mode but i still get text messages and that cuts off my data for tethering while it receives :/ anyone know what to do?
Hi,
I got a silly problem with my Skyrocket. i am using it in India currently and my Data package allows me to Tether. but since the Skyrocket goes through AT&T it wont let me tether. I was wondering if there is a work around for this or if there is any good tethering app that doesnt need Root or any software installed on the PC.
Thank you

Hello!
Please describe the state of your device in detail. Rom, Radio, any mods etc. Put it in your signature if you don't want to type it every time you post.
Once that is done, always search first. "insert question keyword here"+xda @ google or use XDA's own search. Use keywords in your search. This question is not new and has been answered multiple times before.
Depending on what rom you're on these might be of use:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2256725&highlight=tethering
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2271603&highlight=tethering
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1528884&highlight=tethering
I haven't tested any of the above solutions and I know nothing about them, I just used search. Reply in those threads if you want more info.
Personally I avoid AT&T roms like the plague. Because of the limitations (like the one you're encountering) and because of the bloatware/adware that come with AT&T roms. I recommend EMBRYO or Rogers roms if you want a TouchWiz/stock-based environment.
Ok, this is my first post on here in years. Forgive me if I am not in the right section or if this question has been answered countless times. Anyways, I have had an Galaxy s3 Boost for years now. When I first got the phone, I rooted and put a custom rom on the phone. I believe it was "Wicked X". Not sure the exact build model numbers for the phones or rom. Will insert later if needed.
Well with Wicked X, I was able to acheive unlimited Hotspot access with no cap. Normally on the plan I am on, the hotspot caps at 8 gigs. I was using 30+ with this rom build.
My question is, I am switching to the S5 now and would like to know a way to achieve the same on this phone as I did with the s3. Maybe this has already been answered and if so can someone please redirect me.
I have no problem achieving root access on this phone but I would like to know of a rom that gives me Unlimited hotspot cap like Wicked X did for me with the S3.
Thanks ahead.
you may want to look at the ROM you used and the apk that sounds like was baked into it. It might have just been using one of the many hotspot apps that dont tell the network that youre utilizing hotspot. Chainfire had one out there before he retired that will likely suit your needs. I use resurrection remix and it has hotspot baked in that doesnt tell my carrier that im using my data for that.
Thanks man. I'll check it out.
