[REF][Guide/Tutorial] Getting Started Modding Your T-Mobile G2x - T-Mobile LG G2x

Getting Started Modding Your T-Mobile G2x
This is a Tutorial to assist new users on how to get up and going on a new ROM.
This tutorial is all based on you having a PC and an x64 or x86 based OS.
Please do not ask questions as I will not be supporting this tutorial. Post questions in G2x Q&A or the following linked XDA threads (Read instructions first please in the below linked threads).
Please follow the below steps in order.
Step 1
Root your Phone (for Froyo 2.2.2 only, or you can just skip this step and go to Step 2 if you intend on flashing a ROM straight off):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039985
Step 2
Flash ClockworkMod Recovery via NvFlash (You can use ROM Manager to install ROMS but CWM is not persistant unless you NvFlash it.):
1. Use the One-Click NvFlasher to flash the Clockwork Mod Recovery of your choosing (external or internal supported SD card)(Which will be persistent at bootup).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
2. In your O/S install ROM Manager and once again choose to flash Clockwork Mod Recovery (which will NOT be persistent at bootup, but you can get to it through the O/S only using ROM Manager).
(You can use ROM Manager to flash ROMS / Download ROMS and Flash. And Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery using NvFlash
so you will also have the security that if your phone freezes or gets in a boot loop you can get to recovery through using the key press method.
Flashing CWM from ROM Manager will not allow you to get to recovery using the boot up button press method. It's a Tegra 2 chipset thing!)
Note: Mounting SD to your PC and ext4 support only works by booting to the NvFlashed CWN recovery and not going through ROM Managers CWM recovery. Are you confused? Hope not!

So Basically, I use ROM Manager to update my CM7 nightly build and I use the recovery that gets fake flashed by ROM Manager.
I have the NvFlashed Recovery standing by when i want to do a Nandroid Backup/Restore or want to flash roms that are not in ROM Manager or Mount my SD Card from recovery, recover from a bad flashed ROM, etc...
Step3
Perform a Titanium Backup or My Backup Pro of your Phone (you can skip this step if you prefer, and go to Step 4.):
1. Install Titanium Backup or My Backup Pro from Android Market.
2. Backup all of your apps.
3. Copy the "Titanium Backup" Directory from your internal SDCard to your External SDCard.
Step4
Perform a Nandroid Backup of your Phone (Optional but suggested before you flash any ROM or make any O/S changes):
1. Bootup to NvFlashed Clockwork Recovery using the button method.
2. Choose backup/restore and run a backup.
3. This will save the backup to your internal or external SD Card depending on which version of CWM you selected in the One-Click App.
Step 5
Download a ROM and place it on the SDCard that you have ClockworkMod Recovery support for (see step2 link) and flash the ROM by booting into ClockworkMod Recovery using the button press method:

Hopefully this clears out most of the repeated flashing questions from the other threads.
That may just be wishful thinking though.

the guide master is here! lol

Before backing up via Titanium, you can also just change your "backup folder name" to "_ExternalSD/TitaniumBackup" in the preferences. That should store everything on your SD card and save you a copy

When I do a Nandroid back up, should I sync google account to bring back all the apps first or can i just do a nandroid backup with having to sign in.
The reason I ask is because I just got my SD card and would like to do a Nandroid before flashing CM7.

How ever you want your phone to look when you restore nandroid is what you should do.

Nice guide gunnman.. Hopefully this will help those with questions that can be answered with this thread..

Is ROOT needed before the Clockwork nvflash? Reason I ask is the steps I took were:
1) Boot Stock Recovery to bring device back to stock.
2) nvFlash Clockwork
3) Nandroid backup
My feeling is if I need to get back to stock / exchange my device I restore that backup and then nvFlash stock recovery.
Opinions?

look at step 1 which is root

how do i do it this way? it doesn't let me type in a new name. no keyboard pops up. i can delete the name but it won't let me select a new name.

When you're at that screen press the return arrow button on the phone and it should take you to the sd card directory. I was confused when I got to that part too.

Am I allowed to do step 3 first instead of step 2? because I rooted and backed up and everything with Titanium Backup but I havn't NvFlashed yet. thanks.

can i put all backup stuff on one microsd and take it out and only use it when needed? i'm guessing i can, but just want to make sure that if something happens to the phone and needed a restore, i can just put the microsd with the backups into the phone and do a restore from there.
edit: thanks amac89 for the tip with the external sd step.

[Q] custom recovery

ok so im new to android and still trying to quickly figure things out.
i have the droid2bootstrap.apk on my computer but am tryin to read all about it before i use it. this will work for the D2G right?
so what exactly does it do? what is "reboot recovery"? does it make backups of the stock rom and apps on the SD card? how would i go about using the backup if necessary? do i also need titanium backup to delete the bloatware?
please be detailed and gentle
thanks

It hijacks the booting process and if a flag is put up (by the system or by the bootstraps application) then the phone will boot into the Clockwork mod recovery so that one can flash ROM's or backup and restore the current ROM.
"reboot recovery" "reboot[s into] recovery" from the current ROM so that one can do the aforementioned tasks.
Backing up just involves getting into recovery via the bootstrap app then going into the "backup and restore" menu and choosing backup and then confirming and the current ROM is backed up to the sdcard.
If you want to after that backup has been made and you get back into the ROM you can place a copy on your computer just in case your sdcard becomes messed up you can still get your backup. If your phone becomes inoperable then you have to get that working first but you can restore your backup after the phone is in working software condition.
If you want to remove apps you only need root access and a root file manager or Terminal emulator (I prefer because it's free) Titanium is best if you only want to freeze apps which is the best case if the SBF isn't available and you want to be able to get updates in the future but it has other uses as well mostly to back up data and applications.
*These views are from a D2 owner not a D2 Global owner feel free to specify more specifically if there are parts of this that don't fit the D2 G (I assume they do but I have not tested otherwise) You are responsible for your phone and the things that you do (thank goodness for the recent release of the SBF for the D2 G!!)

[Q] Just want to install a ROM....

Thats it... A simple (but I want to do it without bricking my $600 phone) ROM flash.
This is the ROM I would like to install:
Stock Sense - 1.13.605.7 Basic DeBloat
Thank you. I give up trying to get help in IRC. Waste of time (except for Dr_Drache, he was very helpful)).
what part do you need help on? are you rooted?
yes, I am already rooted. I had a major malfunction in BAMF 1.6.3 this a.m. when a battery went dead. I replaced the battery and the phone went nuts... So I unrooted the phone and then re-rooted. I couldnt get help in the IRC channel to install this ROM I am asking about so I thought I would try to get some help here.
Thanks for replying.
I am not seeing the question here... Do you have rom manager installed? You could install simply from there. That's how I did my initial rom install.

Just download .zip place on sd card and flash using rom manager or manually on clockwork recovery.

Simply download the rom place on sdcard and flash using rom manager. Just make sure u have the gingerbread radio installed as well, otherwise you won't have a data connection. Also be careful with this rom and other gingerbread roms because of the possibility of bricking your $600 phone. It's been reported the leaked radio was causing hard bricked phone (just an FYI)

Stock sense basic debloat ROM does not use the GB radio. And to install I would recommend not using rom manager to install it tends to cause problems.

Don't use Rom manager. Download the Rom. Reboot into recovery using Rom manager. Make a backup if you want. Wipe data. Wipe cache. Go to advanced. Wipe davlik cache and battery stats. Go to install zip from SD and select your Rom. When its done reboot.

I'm still not sure what the question is here...but i'll lay some steps out for you.
FIRST AND FOREMOST: HAVE AMPLE BATTERY CHARGE!! I don't flash with anything less than 50%. If you do, then continue at your own risk.
1. Go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081930 and pick out a ROM you think that you would like. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND ANY GINGERBREAD ROMS. These are still in ALPHA.
2. After you have the ROM downloaded, plug your phone into you computer and put the ROM anywhere on your sd-card. I made a new folder called ROMs and put all my ROMs in there. This keeps things tidy.
3. THIS IS OPTIONAL, but saves you a lot of time in the future. Download Titanium Backup. I would HIGHLY recommend the PRO option. Costs money now, but will save you hours in the future. This program needs root. It will backup all your apps with their data so when you switch ROMs, everything is restored easily and fairly quickly. If you go with this approach, then open TB and backup all USER APPS with DATA. DO NOT BACK UP SYSTEM APPS!!!
4. If you do not have Rom Manager, Download it now. Free is fine. Open up Rom Manager and make sure you have the latest Clockwork Recovery installed. If you don't, then install it. If everything is fine, click the option to boot into recovery. While some people use RM to install the ROMs, I find its better to do it manually.
5. When in Clockwork, go to backup and restore(hit power or home button to choose highlighted option). Choose Backup and let it do its thing.
6. When done, press the menu key until it goes to the main menu.
7. Choose Wipe data/factory reset and let it wipe the data. Do not worry, this will not touch your sd-card. All your pictures, movies, music, ROMs, and everything else on the sdcard will still be there.
8. Go into install zip from sdcard and choose "choose zip from sdcard"
9. Navigate to where you put your ROM from STEP 2
10. Choose the ROM and let it do its thing
11. Press Menu button to go back to main screen and REBOOT
12. ALLOW LOTS OF TIME TO LOAD UP. First boot always takes a long time, dont worry about it.
13. When booted up, ALLOW EVERYTHING TO LOAD. Now enjoy your ROM.
14. If you used Titanium Backup, get it from the market(if it isn't pre-installed). If you payed for it, you won't have to pay for it again as long as you use the same GMAIL account that you used before. All paid apps are saved to your gmail account. Restore all USER APPS with DATA. NOT SYSTEM APPS!
I am by no means a dev or claim to be a genius. I've been around since when the OG droid first came out and I'm just helping out. I am not responsible if something goes wrong. If anyone see's a mistake in this, please point it out or add a step if you want.

Thanks for the replies. For not knowing what the question was, it sure was answered pretty thoroughly.
I did buy Ti Pro a while back and use it a lot. That should be no problem once I figure out why I am not rooted now. I did the whole routine yesterday and Ti cant get su for some reason now.... yay for that. I guess I will try the whole thing again. (It may be that I need to get the proper busybox for Ti Pro to work and be allowed su)
So if I have read this correctly, I will be alright with the debloat ROM I mentioned earlier right? Since it is not gingerbread based right?
oastl: You said don't use ROM Manager then after one sentence you then say to use ROM Manager.... Using ROM Manager to boot into recovery must be a different thing altogether I suppose...
Thanks again for the help... Very much appreciated!

If you're using CWR (which i think is the only option these days?) you totally can. Just choose "install from SD card" and it'll let you navigate your folders. I have a neatly organized "RUU" folder on my SD card. Certain things like radios need to pushed as pg05img.zip on the root of the SD card.

I got super tired of trying to get someone to answer me in IRC. I think I will just come here with my questions from now on and leave that place to those who have the patience for it.
I also got too used to BAMF I think because I ended up flashing to 1.7 anyway... 2.0 looks really good. I think that is still in Beta or I read the post wrong altogether...

[Q] Couple of questions concerning CWM and Backups

So I've read on different ways to boot into CWM then flash to the Krylon fix, but the way I (have) to do it is completely different; First, hit ROM manager then boot into recovery. From there, I cannot click the update from zip option - I get an error and it fails - instead, I go to mounts and storage. Instead of the regular options, my only option is Mount USB Storage. I click that and after some script that I never read, my phone freezes. After the holding the power button to restart, it boots me into the CWM fix that I need to be in in order to flash my ROMs. - Why does it do this?
Also, every time I flash a different ROM, I use a nandroid backup. Recently I almost restored data on an old backup I had from a month ago. How do I delete the old backups that I don't need?

to delete old backup you need to do it manually from the computer when your phone is mounted its in the folder clockworkmod/backups. or delete it from a file manager while on your phone. and what krylon fix are you trying to flash ? are you on stock ?
its the CWM3XX.zip file that I need to get to before flashing ROMs. I can get to it fine, its just that I use a different method of getting there than instructed in the dev threads. I'm running your gingerclone rom. and thanks for the backup advice.

it will add the modded recovery binary and push krylon's good update.zip, and reboot you into recovery.

TiB = Titanium backup, basically same as a PC backup, backs up your userdata and applications, make sure, however, that you place the backup data either on your EXTERNAL SD card or save it on your pc, when you lose your data/flash a new rom, all you have to do is re-install titanium backup and restore the data and apps (although do NOT restore system apps, might cause problems)
Nandroid backup: have you flashed clockworkmod (Comes with CF-Root)?
when you go into recovery mode (either using button combo or using the CWM app you have in your drawer, you can make a backup of the whole system, including FW specific files etc, make this backup, save the data either on external sd or pc, and when u need it, restore using CWM recovery mode (for example when u want to go back from the custom rom to stock and dont feel like flashing - rooting - deodexing
these 2 backups save you a lot of trouble
ah ok, thanks for your help, I just do the bakcup from the recovery mode, it hize kph in the home version, clean, applications do not care much, I'm looking for some kind of custom rom pretty, I like the revoluion the keyboard rc5 gingerbread and val-notification and timing is very important, but vv bluetooth does not work, now cranium use 3.0, but the calendar has a circle in the current week horirible! help

Here's the order in which i performed new ZEUS (build 6) install.
1) Titanium backup user apps.
2) manual backup of media.
3) Odin back to stock froyo.
4) Factory Reset.
5) super one click root
6) modded recovery install using cwm from market
7) re-install packages x2
8) install Zeus
9) Titanium re-install user apps.
10) ICS for v6 theme installed
Question: Can i move an OLD nandroid backup into the "_/clockworkmod/backup" folder and restore as if it i had not factory reset and re rooted?

RE-EDIT!!
Sorry if all that was unclear.. it was drunk thirty when i sent that.
i went back to stock, then did a factory reset from within froyo:
Settings -> privacy -> Factory data reset.
i copied the nandroid backup to the comp before this, then copied it back to same folder once i rooted and installed zeus and made initial new nandroid backup.
My question is can I restore from a backup that the phone erased and i put back after re-installing CWM.

cwm backup file can be restored in cwm. I don't know if it can be restored by any other means.
You dont have to be rooted. You just need to have a working cwm...I have only worked with Red CWM.
If you are looking to restore a nandroid, I recm booting into cwm. wipe clean: factory reset, wipe cache, advance -wipe dalvik. mount: format system, data and cache. Then restore your nandroid.
That's cool. I'm gonna try it, cause I can throw it under a bus for a new one if it bricks.
My question was backtowherw I started...with a a new file structure... can I restore from an old backupfrom a different file structure.
I was and am rooted fro both backups.
I did and now have red cwm.
I do and will take notes.

My question is can I restore from a backup that the phone erased and i put back after re-installing CWM.
this is not a normal nandroid / cwm restore.
If you're reading this : Please... let me know if this has been discussed and link me ...
or tell me what it you don't understand about my question or how it differs from the MANY cwm restores I've Don from nandroid backup.
I guess no one knows ; That's cool.
The problem is that I forgot to backup all my apps. That's the only reason I wanted restore to a nandroid backup that was deleted by froyo factory data reset.
Now I backup using titanium but apparently lost or deleted the tiba folder after I copied it to the hdd.
At any rate, I only care that I get all apps with data back.
So... is there another way?
Apk extract from nandroid using comp or android?
Sent from my perfectly working phone which I choose not to **** up by restoring from a backup I didn't really want anyway.
Not sure if this helps. But I always copy my nandroid back ups to my computer and my sdcard. That way if I ever need to restore, I can just copy the nandroid back up to the clockwork/backup folder.
Just reread, there are a couple of apps that will let you extract apps from a nandroid backup. I for get which ones though.

Thanks for this thread. I've been trying to find a clear answer to my question and this is about as close as I've been able to find. So, just to verify (I am a noob, after all):
In order to install a rooted ROM when you have already installed an unrooted 2.3.6 (in my case, the UCLB3 leak), you need to do a nandroid backup, then go back to Froyo stock, root the Infuse, install CWM, then follow the instructions on the box?
In my case, I'm interested in Dman's rooted etc. UCLB3. His instructions start with "Boot into CWM" and I suppose this is the only way to do so!
This is what you are saying you did more or less, right?

If I were you I would
step-1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524081
After flash to stock uclb3 then use the heimdall package in the second post to flash Entropy's kernal... which will give you cwm recovery.
Step-2
Reboot into recovery and flash whatever you want
