So as the galaxy s II will soon be launched in the U.S. i was wondering how many of you people were getting it. I ask this because i dont know if i should wait til next year, which is when samsung has been known to release a dual core 2ghz phone... (is this even trustworthy?)
so i was wondering how many of you guys were getting the galaxy s II or just waiting for next year perhaps, for the dual core phone.
i plan on getting it once its released in the U.S. and when the first samsung phone with a 2ghz dual core processor is released, ill be getting that too. im a phone whore.
I knew once I would get my Captivate, a better phone would come out... Low and behold the Galaxy S II. -__-
The best price I've found for the SGS II is $743 shipped from Handtec. I'm very tempted.

Yes. And you're doomed to delayed updates, no free tethering, no unknown sources apps, less dev support, removed features, etc. etc.
Look at the Captivate compared to the i9000. It's the same thing. And there's no guarantee that the i9100 ROMs will be portable to whatever bastardized thing ends up on AT&T. For a long time the Vibrant could run nothing but Vibrant ROMs. The Fascinate is totally boned.
So if you're interested in any of that, then yes.
Otherwise the i9100 will work on AT&T.
I'm gonna wait out my contract and buy an international S3 model when it comes out. I'm tired of being f*cked by AT&T (week long service black-outs with "no known issues", billing errors, hidden fees, dropped calls, etc.) and would rather jump on an MVNO or something

Why not buy it unlocked and unbranded once it's released in the US? Or will it only be available through the operators...

Another option, if in fact Samsung plans to do that.
I plan on waiting until at least end of the year before I buy a new phone. The captivate really has some of the best hardware around right now even though its not the top anymore.
I kind of want the kyocera echo. But I definitely want some with stock gingerbread. Might just wait and see what device gathers a bunch of support.
can you just buy a international version of galaxy S II and then use it on at&t?
would you have to unlock to do that?
ANd do you guys think the galaxy s III will come out about 2012 may?
and then you're galaxy s3 will be obsolete when the 3ghz processor comes out, just buy now because you'll be waiting for ever for the next best thing.
Wow ~$700 from overseas? That's actually a great deal. Just wish I had that money to toss around. Instead, I'm using $1000 as a down payment on a new car.
Oh well..
I got my Captivate at the end of July so my contract will be up summer 2012 so at the current rate of releases the S3 will be out or some other phone that is so much better at that time will be out.
I'm poor and cheap so I have to buy on contract

Well using the poor and cheap is bad, I would say it is smarter because why pay $ 500+ for a phone off Contract if the contract price is $ 200? I have paid on contract $ 500+ for a cell phone and never again *Blackberry Bold 9000 when it first came out*, and the phone started having physical problems 5 days before the captivate came out and ATT let me upgrade a week early with out having to pay an early upgrade fee. I have not had any issues at all with my captivate and it runs fine.

by 2013 amd will make a 3watt processor on 28nm architecture, likey multi core. i think that could support 3ghz+ on low voltages, maybe more. they plan to use it in an andriod tablet.
I think I'm gonna get the SGSII, but I'm not sure yet. AT&T is supposed to come out with a lot of new Android phones this year, are they not?

I haven't seen the specs but if it's compatible with ATT's bands then that would be the way to go. You would definitely not have to unlock as it wouldn't be locked to begin with
International phones are not locked to any carier. They have more consumer friendly laws in Europe than we do here in gitmo nation. If I am wrong please tell me.

What are you talking about? The Galaxy S was on nearly all carriers. No reason that Galaxy S II will not be not to mention the rumored name will be AT&T Attain.
IT will be released by at&t as the Samsung Attain:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/16/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-us-carrier-names-revealed-atandt-attain-veri/
Go figure :O
But alas, no 4.5' screen
SGS2 will come to ATT, and most likely about same time.
It already passed FCC with ATT-specific frequencies.
So yeah. VZW news came first, that's all. Actually, second, Sprint SGS2 news came first.
Yeah the attain was announced like wayyyy last month.... ATT is first to the scene... Verizon and sprint is kinda on the coat tails...
Who cares about sgs2, I'm ok with the infuse and I will be eligible for upgrade on June 13 5 days from now and I will use that for the iPhone 5 to sell it for may be $1,500 or more in London. I hope.

Yes transformer already pointed this out. It will be Q3 for all carriers probably september
I just bought Infuse 4g and love it (after iPhone 4 *sigh*). The only thing is disappointing is single core processor because new phones with dual cpu and decent gpu just started to come out. Samsung Galaxy S II is superior in this sense. The question is will it come out this summer on at&t because, I know from experience, it took a half a year to HTC phones to get to USA.
Should I return Samsung Infuse and wait for Samsung Galaxy S II?

So I know there is a pool of people like me that recently purchased a Charge in order to get locked into an unlimited data plan. I assume there is also a smaller set of people, like me, who did this despite the fact they would have rather waited and purchased the Samsung Galaxy S2, but were forced into this decision because of the now enacted tiered data plans. With that being said and the recent news of the GS2 being released next month, I want to know if there is a way to switch from the Charge to the GS2, preferably without paying full retail for the phone (or adding a line). Any insight from current or former Big V employees or aggressive customers on how to go about this, if at all?

so odds are it ill just be tmo/att gsm versions followed by sprint, then vzw...hopefully the vzw one isnt the only 3g one
but no there is no way at launch you can get one on contract price without opening a new line

Well, this may not be any help to you, but it may help someone.
Best Buy Mobile is the only place that I know that still has a 30 Day exchange policy for Verizon. Unless the GS II comes out the first week of the month you would be out of luck. But you never know someone my be able to hustle one when it releases.
If you got it from costco you can return within ninety days

I have yet to see any news about the SGS2 on Verizon anytime soon. While it will hopefully be out in the next month or two, there are no guarantees.
My guess is that there will be a flood of used charges on craigslist when the gs2 releases.

You do know you didn't have to buy a new phone to be grandfathered into unlimited data, right? As long as you don't downgrade to a feature phone, you could continue having unlimited data for as long as you're a Verizon customer and don't downgrade.

I'm guessing he's basing that off of how thin it is.
I wonder if that new Verizon Samsung slider that's been wandering the interwebs lately is Verizon's SGS II...
I'm basing it off of not a single mention of LTE in the many many reviews online. We have leaked specs on the entire phone pretty much but not one place mentions LTE.
I haven't reviewed the specs of the gs2. Is it a dual core phone? Have you noticed all 4g lte phones are single core? What I was told by verizon is the lte connection somehow literally fries the current dual core processors thus resulting all the lte phones being single core and also why the droid bionic hasn't been released. To conclude my yapping is if the gs2 is a dual core phone then it's likely to be just for 3G.
Gremlins are watching you...
I bought my charge at costco hoping to either get a bionic or gs2 but I'm very happy with my charge even umrooted... I haven't had the need for a dual core cpu and when I do I want a snap dragon dual core. I
am good

I am a new customer coming over from Sprint. I was not satisfied with their service but stuck with them because they were more affordable and had unlimited everything. Preferred LTE over Wimax and made the switch a few days before the new tiered data plans. I could have gotten a reliable 3g phone for much cheaper, but I could not resist the LTE.

1. no one has reviewed (or seen) a VERIZON sgs2 yet which would be the only one capable of running lte atm
2. going by leaked roadmaps is pointless as some have said lte others not
3. we will have to wait and see, but that sammy slider WAS lte, and unlikely to be the sgs2...i think it ll be another refreshed sgs 1
Most likely the GS2 will be only 3g. Having tasted 4g on the Charge, I can't imagine going back to those slow speeds. However, I think it'll still be a top seller.

Hi , At&t is offering me galaxy s2 for $230 as an early upgrade offer. my contracts ends in nov 2012, so if i take this upgrade offer, my contract would end in nov 2013, should i go ahead with this or wait for some new phones in june/july.
There will always be a better phone coming out in a few months. If you wait for summer, it will be the holiday season.
Samsung sold over 10 million GS IIs before selling a single one in the US.
Any flaw, what so ever insignificant, in the captivate is fixed in the GS II. It feels amazing in hand, super smooth and fast, plus there is already 7 different ROMs, and it hasn't been out a month yet.
You cannot go wrong with the GS II. Go into the store and play with it. After two weeks I have yet to find a flaw, or a way to make it lag, or hesitate.
My question for you is: how do I get att to let me renew a year early? (For next time)
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)
AT&T is letting me upgrade a year early also. Pretty sure it's not a full discount upgrade, or what, but my contract isn't up until 2012.
the original retail price is $199 and they are offering me for $230. I just called customer care and asked for an upgrade for s2 they gave the above option...this is with a 2 year contract....

My contract ends in January 2012, but I got a Galaxy S II off-contract.
The thing's AMAZING!! Super light, amazing screen, extremely fast, the best in every aspect.
The price is not, it's $599 off-contract. But do what I did, scout craigslist and find people who are selling it new in box at a good price, or sell your captivate, or trade.
The deal I scored was $360 + hacked Motorola Backflip, and I have a spanking new Galaxy S II.. Just don't deal in a bad neighborhood and always make sure it's the Galaxy S II (Say's it on the back)

That stopped this year. They changed it, from 12 months to the normal 20. After upgrading in September, I next qualify 5/2013. That's why I was curious how he got them to budge at all. I have another line that qualifies in December (start date 4/2010, never renewed), and the phone broke, I tried in store and over the phone, they won't let me upgrade early without adding like $100 to the price of the phone, not the gentle $30 the OP got.

I was with att wireless, before they were Cingular, with a corporate sponsorship this whole time. In the past I have had 18 or 12 month cycles too. The att store told me they changed the policy a few months back so all future renewals are not eligible until 20 months. I'm ecstatic with my phone now, so it doesn't matter now, but if in a year I can upgrade for only an extra $30, I'll be all over that. Maybe by then the LTE phones will have battery life worked out, and my area will have LTE

Is 2 years a hard or soft limit? (i.e. contract or no contract?) I'm planning on keeping my Nexus for two years, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.
The good news is that the nexus is cheap (off google play or expansys) hence good for buying unlocked. I would not buy it from Verizon, for instance; the updating status on the CDMA variants is questionable.
(Also, yeah, S3 hardware buttons sux.)
naaa you guys have gone soft get the s3 or wait to see the nexus 4
i have the gnex won it from a giveaway and personally i think its dog**** if you have the chance get the s3 not the nexus crap or as i said wait for the next nexus romurs are that it will have a s4 quadcore ship clocked at 1.5ghz sounds sexy also its based on a15
I have verizon, and unless the rules have changed, you can upgrade after 18 months, and get $50 off at a 24 months. Why pay so much for a phone, when your not sure for an upgrade? So I would have to wait 18 months minimum.
Have there been any releases of what the going price would be for the S3 in the US? I ready font want to spend $300 for a phone.

I would recommend against the verizon version of the nexus, for the reasons above. Though of course, my opinion is not the end-all.
Buying a phone outright gets you more flexibility and, if you go with prepaid, lower costs overall. As you said, you have to wait > 18 months to get a new one under your plan [and you'd have lost out, with your increased rates, if you don't]. I can get my next phone anytime [and am subject to low rates all the time]. My nexus, for example, is definitely good for this year, but I don't want to count on my prophetical powers for anything longer. If it gets broken, or just plain outclassed, I want to be able to grab the newest thing on the market right away.
(Note: Prepaid vs contract is a much more complicated issue than I might have made it sound above; you'd have to shop and probably have to use something besides Verizon, for one thing.)
Another recent thing to note: Verizon is removing unlimited upgrades (you'd be forced onto a tiered plan), though you can keep your old plan if you get your new phone on your own.
I'm not sure what the exact pricing is, but for arguments sake, lets say that the nexus is 200 with contact, and 400 without, pushy the going rate 400? How would you get out any cheaper? And I'm sure no where near $200.

The price differential over 24 months adds up.
For example, T-mobile has a $30 100 minute 5 gig prepaid, and Straight Talk has a $45 unlimited prepaid; there are others to shop around for, but those are the most commonly cited. Assuming you even get the cheapest Verizon plan, $40 (450 minutes talk) + $10 (1000 smses) + $30 (2 gb data) = $80 (per month)
Verizon's $80/month is already $35/month more than ST. That means you save $840 over 24 months by going even the more expensive prepaid. (Compared to this, the puny $200 subsidy is nothing.)
For the t-mobile plan, the differential is a whopping $50, and you save, holy hell, $1200 over 24 months.
In other words, the subsidy is just a psychological scam make you think you've got a discount, when really, the higher prices per month make all the difference.
thebobp said it quite well.
But I'm hoping to sign a new contract and keep my grandfathered unlimited plan. I'd liked to upgrade to the S3 with unlimited grandfathered LTE, but that's hoping that the S3 is available before Verizon starts pushing the shared data plans (at which point I can't upgrade to LTE and keep unlimited data).
If the S3 isn't coming out before then, then I'm thinking I should just get a Gnex so I can start enjoying unlimited LTE data.
Wow, I've never thought about it that way. I always thought those other providers offered a lower level of service? I know t mobile has crap service around here, so you can't be using all of verizons network.

"Lower level of service" is just company propaganda. The only relevant question is which one offers good enough service for you, for the cheapest price. And unfortunately, there's no easy way to answer that except to try them out, preferably cheapest to most expensive. Even reviews aren't all that relevant, simply because service can vary so wildly depending on location. Thankfully, prepaid is a natural platform for "just trying a service out", but it does require a compatible phone.
I don't know what you mean by "tmobile using all of verizon's network"; they're completely distinct. Straight talk (and many others) are carried over AT&T and t-mobile's networks, though.
Thanks a lot for all your replies.
As far as the network goes, I thought tmobile used verizons network, because when 4g came out, they were the only other ones saying they used 4g lte. So I just assumed they used verizons network.

I'm in a similar situation, right now I'm waiting to see what the S3 looks like in the US. If its not to my liking I'll probably get the Nexus, and a + for the Nexus is it will be getting Android 5.0 aka Jellybean. I would also buy it from the Google Play Store so it doesnt have any bloatware, however that is $299.
If you've made it this long with the Galaxy S, I say wait for the next Nexus. Especially with the rumors of several different manufacturers being able to build their own Nexus device.
I would take the samsung nexus. The S3 doesn't offer enough power difference in my opinion to spend the extra money on. Most of its software features aren't that good imho. And if they are you can find a similar app on the market for it.

Have you heard anything about the S3 US version being dual core? because i would think that the Nexus being Dual Core, vs the S3 being quad core would be a big difference.
I'm going to have to look around to see when the next nexus is getting released.
my S1 annoys me a bit, but maybe i'm just getting the itch to get a new phone. every once and a while it stops responding to touch, if you hit the power button, and then unlock the phone again, its been coming back. also, playback skips when i first start playing something in dog catcher, and some games... yeah, I know.. i guess its more of an itch than anything else, but at least this way, i can make an informed decision if/when my phone completely dies.
i am running gingerbread rom, i recently reinstalled it from scratch, and then reinstalled my apps, but its still the same.
I guess i'll try and hold onto this phone as long as i can. I do like the service with verizon, and get a hefty discount from my job, so i'm a bit weary to switch carriers.

Have you seen the difference between the Quad core One X and the dual core version? No? Neither has anyone else.

S3 LTE will most definitely be a dual core, because no quad core supports LTE.
Rumors about Nexus launch date say thanksgiving.

There is no 4g; it hasn't come out yet. The 4g standard requires 1Gbps data, while LTE is capable of max 300Mbps data and, in practice, can get as low as a single-digit Mbps. See this article for more information. Basically, the marketing departments here in the US realized they could get away with calling crap 4G, and that's what we have now.
The much more relevant question is how fast a particular service is in your area (because it can vary so wildly), and that can't be answered by anything except trial and error.
Either that, or my computer is having some weird kind of flashback:

Any ideas as to why Tmo has trotted out the SGS4G again - AND at a higher price than the HTC One X and the Galaxy S Blaze?
It could be a mistake and they meant to add the S3.
Or you guys still have some OS update hope.
you could always buy the GS4G, I don't think it was ever taken off their list. It's been one of the phones they advertise in their pre-paid plan line-ups for some time now.
The One S is cheaper because it has more incentives and discounts right now. the actual retail price is higher than the GS4G if you buy it outright.
That deal on the One S is pretty sweet though. I just don't want to start another 2 year contract
i'm buying the next sprint LTE android flagship phone. Jelly Bean.

Don't. Buy an at&t phone or other 1900/850 capable phone (our phone is believe it or not. Get a straight talk at&t sim and pay 45$ a month for GREAT service. I'm not advertising just vouching

T-Mobile never stopped selling the 4G. They actually raised it's price with the new financing thing they got going on.
Is there a place offering the quad core One X at a reduced price for contract? I'm looking to get a top of the line phone soon. I would love the S3, but I'm pretty sure it wont be discounted for a little while.
Sorry, but it was gone from their main list of phones with contract for quite some time - it was followed off the list by the G2x and the HTC Sensation. And now it has reappeared, costing more money than dual-core phones like the Blaze and the One X and still without any official hope of getting ICS. I just find that very strange.

They probably had a bock log of phones that need to be sold. Again its a phone pushed towards the prepaid service. You will qualify for discounts by purchasing the newer phones. However if you are upgrading or replacing out of contract the sgs4g is cheaper.
Yes T-mobile is still selling our phones and yes Samsung is still making our phones. Does that really surprise you, they still make flip phones and simian phones for non data plans. They rarely discontinue a phone unless it no longer will function on their upgraded networks, like what happened to the original sidekick phones. They could no longer support the data system so one day all the sidekick owners received a text that said upgrade or lose service. If the phone can still fill a market need and be profitable then it will continue to be sold.

The fact that they are selling the phone doesn't surprise me - what does surprise me is that it is so much more expensive than the Blaze and the One S, on a 2-year contract. Don't get me wrong, I like our phone, but for new customers signing a 2-year contract, offering the SGS4G at a higher price point than those two dual-core phones is a head-scratcher.

They want you to buy the new phones. Its not really a head scratcher. Again they would rather push the sgs4g towards the prepaid side. You also qualify for discounts for the newer phones that the sgs4g does not qualify for.
