So here's a puzzle.
My nexus one has a broken power button, and I learnt to get around it with apps like quickboot, that let me boot into recovery automatically.
I flashed cyanogenmod 7 (nandroid before that) and turned the phone on. It worked perfectly, but I had forgotten to flash gapps, so I do.
Now I turn my phone on and it boots to the "Touch the android to begin" tutorial/thing. The android lights up when I touch it, but doesn't change screen. It just stays there. Now that is apparently not unheard of, and the advice is to wipe or reflash the rom and/or gapps. The problem is, since I don't have a power button, I can't go into recovery mode from the bootloader, I'd have to do it using the quickboot, but I can't because the screen is stuck.
Is there a way to flash a rom from a pc? Any other ideas? Anything is much appreciated.
Try a method called "passimg" which is used to revert to stock android. I don't have much to time to look into it for you, but it's possible, because i had to do the same for mine. You place the file on your sd card root then boot (using the battery removal/insertion method) while holding the volume down button. You'd have to re-root then you can try to recover again.
Hello, I am currently rooting my nexus s using Jonathon Grigg's guide on complete android.
I am using the method that does not wipe everything. I am not inside clockwork mod and i cannot select "install zip from sd card". I can go up and down in the menu with the volume keys but when u press power it just removes the menu and only the clockwork logo stays. I press the power button again and im back in the menu with the logo in the background (like it should be according to the screenshots in the guide). So I cant selet anything in the clockwork mod menu.
Any help would be appreciated as i am completely stuck and cant even turn the phone (dont want to resort to taking out the battery).
There should be no issue pulling the battery.
What command/method did you use to get into Clockwork? You say you're not in it, but then you say you have menus and a clockwork logo. What color text is on your screen when you boot into recovery?
Its is more solved. I seemed to have a corrupted clock work image as when I downloaded it from the second mirror it worked perfectly. Thanks for anyone that responded

Just got the G2X thanks to UPS' rapid delivery. Before rooting the phone, I wanted to make sure I was able to get into recovery mode. I looked up Paul's (@ modaco) instructions for the Optimus 2X and it said to boot up with the volume down button pressed. I did that but got a screen that said "S/W UPDATE"...never seen that before. I tried a few times and got the same result.
I also tried booting with volume button pressed up, and both volumes pressed together. I was never able to get into recovery mode but did something which actually wiped my phone! That kind of sucked, and it's fine...but has anyone managed to get into recovery mode?
Did you not read the sticky at the top of this forum?
What you did is described as a hard reset in the T-Mobile manual which is why your phone got wiped (restored).
Thanks Barry. It's all good, that's not a problem. I've never seen an Android phone ship without a recovery, as is suggested on the 3rd page of the sticky. Well, ok then!
It does have a recovery image, that's what boots when your phone wipes.
It standard Android recovery that simply runs a script at boot to factory reset. If you press the Home key while it's doing this you'll see the stock recovery menu (you just can't select the options).
Essentially this just needs to be replaced with CWM or equivalent.
What you describe here is identical to the O2x and has been well discussed.
Of course CWM needs to be patched for the G2x but that won't take long. When it is you will access using the same method as you've tried here but there will be no "auto wipe" script of course.
Having said this, the S/W Update boot mode is not the same as recovery.
Recovery (which is factory reset for stock) is entered by holding down power and vol_down together until recovery loads.
[Q] Unable to flash Lenovo A660 -> looped during factory reset -> unable to boot
Hello all!
I am having a really strange error with my phone. I can't flash it. Even when it says it's "Downloaded OK" -> green circle in Smart Phone Flash Tool, seems like nothing really happened.
The problem is, machine Lenovo A660 keeps restarting and "updating". Lenovo logo -> Android image with some weird blue shape -> restart. (5-10secs each repetition).
My Factory mode looks like this -> http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/594/img5854y.jpg/ (power on + volumne down)
This phone came with Etotalk MOD ROM.
Main problem occured, when I've couldn't access my applications -> Application not found error and lost all application icons. Then Google Play said, my account has never been used with this device. So I joined again, "re"installed applications. Some worked, but most of them kept shutting down with errors. So I decided for factory reset via software menu recovery and backup menu (??). Device started to "recovering" and it was doing for 20-30minutes - so I have restarted it.. bearing on mind, that factory reset did not work, as people stated it lasts around 7mins..
Then I have tried to flash it using various boot.img and recovery.img from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1874403 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2104748
but they won't work. Seems like something starts earlier then true recovery tool.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

I have found and use stock-modded ROM for this phone, but it really seems like Smart Phone Flash Tool is not flashing this device.
The thing is, I never see that purple bar to come.
I am using only recovery and boot image. After hitting Download I connect phone, which got battery out for few secs, and leave it as is. Red bar fills up, yellow bar fills up and that all, green circle appears.
When I start device, no change has happened. :-/
Somebody help me, please..
Btw, what is that THL and which is on my phone? Do I actually need it?
I am really stuck.

This is my problem described in a deeper way -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=37983752
I think, that smart phone flash tool is not actually flashing the device at all.
Your help is probably the last I might get.. in case you know any other phone-expert.
I had this phone for almost a month and a week
PS: I have anohter exactly same phone in case it might help something in something.
Thank you very much in advanced.

You are correct, the standard recovery will not flash the ROM. You *must* first flash a custom recovery using the windows flash utility, and after that you can flash the ROM you linked to.
Read the first two posts in this thread, and the pages it links to, especially the two 'flash' links and the A660 recovery link.

Thank you for your help! After some hard battling with some button combinations I managed to get into some "etotalk" rom recovery, which fixed partitioning (using mke2fs tool) and getting clean "old" 4.0.4 android.
Thank you again! Phone is alive!
PS: I am not sure of the combination, but I pressed & hold both volume controls and simultaneously (or few ms later) pressed power on button.

This might no longer be up to date AND I am no expert but when I was "playing" with my A660, I noticed that some (generic) descriptions for flashing, etc. refer to up- and down volume buttons, which (because they are on the right side of the device?) are in some cases mirrored to some of the instructions. In other words, up is down and down is up (if that makes sense).
If I power off the device, I usually first press volume up (and keep it pressed), while then also pressing and holding the power button.
Once the screen comes to live, you may let go of the buttons.
This combination brings me into the CWM Recovery based Recovery Mode. My phone also had the ETOTALK ROM installed ...
Navigation is with volume up / down and item selction is with the power button!
Same procedure with volume down gets you into the "factory Mode" menu, where you can do all sorts of test. However, this mode is also required for some (!) flashing procedures (ofter referred to for adb access).
Scrolling through the entries with volume down. Accepting an entry with Volume Up!
Hope this helps,
Robert

I also had exactly the same problem as you, when trying to do a factory reset on my phone too. the vol up+ power button don't work, instead the phone starts in the same looped state, displaying the green android logo & restarting.
somebody please help me out.

I have the same end result (after a factory reset (unintended) and unsuccesful attemts to put etotalk recovery rom back) i did a "format" from the flash tool): the phone appears dead, it will not power up. the flash tool does recognise the phone, and will download, memory test (it does say: "NAND Flash was not detected" however), etc.

solved!
using the instructions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1943442 I got the phone unbricked, so I could put the original firmware back (thanks to etotalk tech support for that tip) and then upgrade again tothe etotalk ROM.
My phone seems to be stuck in download mode. I'm trying to get it to recovery, all attempts result in it going back to download.
I just don't know how to get something else showing on here.
Background: Phone was rooted on Kitkat but I lost the root when I upgraded to Lollipop.
Was trying to root the phone with via the one click (http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/guide-root-lg-firmwares-kitkat-lollipop-t3056951) which seems simple enough. However, my phone would not enter into download mode so I couldn't continue the steps. I found someone with my exact problem right here on XDA (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57125760&postcount=9) and in doing what he did, my phone DID enter into download mode, just got stuck in it.
Edit: In pressing Volume Down and Power off and on (press them, release them, press them, release them, etc) an unknown white screen that reads "Factory Data Reset" and a "yes" and "no" has came up. I don't know if I replaced my CWM recovery with this weird thing, in doing what the XDA poster said?? Even if I press "yes", the download mode screen comes back upon restart.
2nd edit: I did get it working. Left the phone connected to the LGMobile Support Tool while I tried the "Upgrade Recovery" again and after a few tries of that it turned on all by itself. Will try rooting again, hopefully succesfully this time
