Help! Absolute newbie. Windows 7 computer won't recognize my phone when I plug in using stock USB cable. Rooted using Z4 root. Still has firmware 2.1 update 1. Having same problem with wife's unrooted phone. Only recognizes phone as composite USB device. Samsung driver installed, still doesn't work.
Make sure your phone is set to mass storage or ask on connection in Settings > USB settings (I'm assuming you want to transfer files to/from the SD card). If that's set, something should show up on your phone to let you transfer files to the computer when you connect it.
It is set for Ask on Connect
It is set for ask on connect. I am trying to update (upgrade?) to Froyo.
Oh ok. Sorry, it's been so long since I did that, I don't remember enough to be much help. If you can't get that to work, there's a thread on here somewhere with stock Froyo Odin files you can use.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
Wife's stock phone worked
My wife's unrooted phone worked. Can't get either laptop to recognize my phone as a phone. Keeps coming up as "Composite USB device." When I try to use Samsung Drivers, I get error message 10, can not start drivers. Is there something I can change to have computer recognize it as the proper type of device?
if you want to do the official update you have to get samsung kies from uscc website, if unofficial you have to download odin, go to the first thread in mez android development it tells you all you need to upgrade.
They don't see my phone.
I have Kies Mini. It doesn't see my phone. Nor does SuperOneClick. And now I can't get Z4 to work either. Getting worse and worse.
Do you have USB debugging enabled on your phone? And you aren't Enabling Mass Storage correct?
Thanks
I am following the written instructions on the US Cellular website exactly. I spent over an hour on the phone with tech support (Thanks to Holly in OK for her patience) but failed. She recommended either I wipe the phone, with no guarantee of success, or take it to a repair facility. Took it in. They know about the issues with Froyo on this phone and recommended I wait 2 or 3 weeks until Samsung comes out with an update to Froyo. Just for grins, I asked them to plug my phone into their computer to see if it would be recognized. No joy there either. They also recommended I wipe phone. I decided to wait until the update for Froyo comes in. No sense reinstalling everything twice. My wife, who's phone did update, was added to the service ticket so we will be notified "when the fix is in."

Are you using the cable that came with the phone? My buddy had that problem, he was using a old usb they had laying around and thought it would work because he uses it to charge?
Stock cable
I have tried both cables, one from my wife's phone and one from mine. Not sure what they used at USCC store. Thanks for input.
USB not working after 5/5/11 Heinz flash
Love the Heinz 57 ROM but I can't get drive recognized on PC. Fixes I've tried:
rebooted
reflashed ROM
tried different USB cables
tried different pc's
reinstalled Samsung drivers on PC
checked debugging
tried using Mass Storage option and ask on connection
unmounted sdcard
Now I'm at a loss
Thanks in advance!
fixed
rebooted pc seemed to have fixed the issue for now! Going to start playing with boot animations....
What works for me:
- turn Mass Storage on in USB settings
- then turn on USB debugging also
- go back to USB settings and change to ask on connection
- plug in phone, and select mass storage. Then scroll down notification bar and select copy files to/ from
It's a lot of back and forth, but is the only sure thing I've gotten to work. It also has to be redone in that order every time after turning it off.

Is there anyway to restore a Captivate to 100% stock without a USB connection? Ie, load something on to an external sd cards to restore?
I've used ODIN plenty of times, but somehow I've lost my USB connection for anything other than charging the phone (USB Device Not Recognized).
Thanks...
Nope, Odin has to be done via USB, the closest thing out there is Redbend, but ATM people have only put together packages for flashing the kernel, not the whole phone
What about drivers?
Have you tried updating the drivers or installing them?
Crap!
I guess I have to continue trying to get my USB connection to work.
I'm worried that my problem might be hardware on the phone, and without reverting to stock, I won't be able to return it!
Any ideas for the USB problem? I'm using the correct (ODIN) USB driver, installed, uninstalled, re-installed.

sounds like you are having the same USB problem I am on mine (see my post on no USB) BUT...after several weeks w no USB, today I connected the phone to my laptop so I could charge it and VOILA! The phone vibrated and asked me what usb connection did I want to select. Out of the blues, sure I've installed some games and what not but I troubleshot the problem for days several weeks ago and had absolutely no luck. I eventually gave up chalking it up as a bad USB on my phone and being that its rooted I couldnt exchange it. I still think its a defective USB but keep trying on yours and maybe it'll kick in like mine did, I did pull the battery like 10 times...I doubt that did it

Wow, that's weird, but great news for you...congrats!
My situation is a little different, since I have USB on the phone to "Ask on connection" and each and every time I plug in the USB the phone vibrates and makes me select. Doesn't matter WHAT I select. The phone thinks all is well, but any computer I try to attach it to says the device isn't recognized. And I've tried both of the drivers, and have tried each on a clean on install on 'fresh' computers.
...
Back to the topic in the thread title...
...
Since ODIN from an SD card is a no-go...how about a clockwork restore of a stock phone image?
Thanks...
do you have usb debugging enabled? if not enable that. also instead of ask on connection do mass storage thats how it has always worked for me

Debugging on or off, no difference.
Kies, Media, Storage, PC Internet, Ask, no difference.
But thanks for trying!
Fivebraids,
Try it on another computer and see if the drivers download. Maybe something hosed your drivers. Kies always hoses mine.
Did you download and install the drivers that are on the OP in the Odin one click thread? Odin is *****y about drivers and sometimes they take a couple of tries.
Also, does the USB work when you just charge from a wall outlet? If it does then your phone is fine, it is a driver issue.
If you have a Nanadroid backup of stock ran through ClockworkMod within ROM Manager than the answer is yes, if you didn't create a Nandroid backup then the answer is no.
update: I just reread your OP and if it works with charging from the wall then you definately have a driver issue.
Ok, problem solved!
This no USB problem HAS to be a hardware, since I've tried every possible permutation of drivers, settings, different cables, different computers, etc.
I started this thread hoping that I could somehow restore the phone to stock (removing SRE, SU, etc. so I can return it for a new one) without being able to run ODIN. It appears that isn't possible, but I found a way to do the no-usb restore!
I got a copy of the files created by ROM manager of a stock Captivate. I then used Switfp to FTP these files over Wifi to my non-usb phone. I used Rom manager to 'restore' that set of files. All I had to do then was un-root, and voila...STOCK!
I'm off to AT&T tomorrow to return this second Captivate...hoping three times is a charm!
Thanks to everyone for the patience and assistance!
nice job i probably never would've thought of that
Can you link me where you got that stock rom to flash via Nandroid. I am in the same boat as you are. I can't even get my device into recovery. Tried all steps as you and no go on the usb. POS Cappy #2
Hi everyone, first, this is my first post, new to the forums, at least as a registered user. I have a problem with my phone. I know most of you are wondering why I have not just read the other posts on the forums, but I have. I have attempted every solution to the problem posted previously.
Background: Phone: Samsung charge.
I was being impatient and did not want to wait for the gingerbread update form Verizon. I flashed the leaked gingerbread 2.3.4 onto my phone using odin. Everything went great. I was able to use my phone with no problems except shortened battery life, but nothing major. About a month ago the battery life was impossible to maintain and there were some software bugs, like clicks during calls, startup taking forever, around 2 minutes on average!, and random restarts that never happened before. I decided to look up some fixes and found that verizon and samsung had released GB 2.3.6 for the charge. I got excited and decided I wanted to get that, but I could not via OTA. I read some forum posts and they mentioned attempting a factory reset on the phone then trying OTA update. I went ahead with factory reset and everything went fine. My startup time is around 25 seconds now and no random clicks or gliches, but still not on 2.3.6, which was the whole point. I then decided to just flash the stock 2.3.6 rom to the phone.
Problem: When I plug my phone in to multiple computers it will charge but not connect to the computer. This means on my Mac it does not show as an external drive, which it has in the past. On my windows 7 machine it says that drivers were installed but could not be used (I can get the exact quote if needed.) I attempted to go into device manager and solve problem that way but it shows my phone as "unknown device". I have tried to enter download mode when hooked up to windows computers and no connection is found.
Possible solutions attempted and their outcomes:
1. As stated, I attempted the method shown in a thread on droid forums for installing the samsung drivers. I have attempted multiple times to install the drivers on my windows machine and the device remains "unknown".
2. I have attempted multiple cables on multiple computers, both mac and windows 7. No change.
3. I have installed adb and attempted to locate devices using adb devices command on mac. No devices found.
4. I have attempted all methods with both usb debugging checked and unchecked.
5. I have tried every possible usb port I have.
Ideas/questions I have had that I have no idea are possible or how to fix!
Would a factory reset take away the ability to connect to a computer from my phone. So, is there a piece of software in the build I have that controls the connection between the computer and the phone, an identifier of sorts, which is now missing, now that I have reset the leaked ROM.
Is there a way to flash a new ROM without connecting to a computer, via the sd card, and what is that? I have read some things in other posts but am too much of a n00b to understand most of them when using sdcards.
ANY help will be greatly appreciated. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!! I have been at this for at least 6 hours, sifting through forums, searching google, attempting fixes that others have stated worked for them, only to fail every time. Thank you all.
i've had a few issues with this on my Droid Pro. with windows connection a connection assistant came up with some options that I was able to get it to work as a drive.
Getting it to work with adb is another issue alone. The phone needs to be in "debug" mode. I would search for a tutorial on this because you need to edit files on the computer.
for example on my windows I needed to edit one set of files, while on my linux I had to edit another set of things.
I leave my phone in debug mode because i use it for my android app dev on both computers. try that and see if it shows up on your mac.
I have a strange issue with my G2x. A couple of months ago I was trying to sync my music with my phone and the computer wouldn't recognize the phone as a disk drive. At first I chalked it up to the computer I was using at is was old and hadn't been rebuilt in quite a while. I had installed the LG USB drivers already, but just for kicks and grins I installed them again. Still nothing. I decided to rebuild my computer and reinstall the LG USB drivers. Still nothing. The phone charges, but Win 7 doesn't see it.
Fast forward to yesterday. I want to restore my phone to stock so I can get the new BB & stock 2.3.4. I installed the APX driver and when I plug the phone in, I get an error code 10 in Device Manager - the device cannot start. I researched that and found nothing helpful. I tried using another computer that I know used to work with that phone, still nothing. I tried the LG Phone updater - it can't find the phone either. I also tried the KDZ updater - it can't find the phone either (even with the phone in Software Update mode). I also tried several different USB cables.
The phone is rooted and I can change between ROMs with no issues, provided I pull the SD card and copy the ROM to that, or download it directly to the phone.
I think the USB port on the phone is hosed. Any suggestions on how to get the updated BB & 2.3.4 on my phone so I can get a warranty replacement?
[edit] - I am on Windows 7 64 bit.

Do you have USB debugging turned on in Settings, Applications, Development? That may help get connected to the Win7 PC.
Yeah - USB debuggin is on.
I had the same problem a little while ago. The solution for me was to install the drivers throught the updater application available on T-Mobile's website. I'm not sure why directly installing the drivers doesn't work, but that's just how it is for some people, apparently.
---------- Post added at 02:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:56 PM ----------
Oh, and turn debugging OFF
Yeah, i would turn off usb debugging, as then you can't get to USB Mass Storage. I would also try uninstalling and reinstalling the LG USB Drivers, and then try it again.
I have tried all manners of the solutions presented. Installing drivers from the LG Update tool, from the LG website, with and without USB debugging, with and without the SD card (saw that somewhere else). The more I work on it, the more I believe the USB port is bad. Thank goodness I can still charge it. The guy at the T-mobile store states I can get a new phone in 3 months. So I think I will just live with it for the time being.
What ROM are you on? I remember having problems with some of the ICS ones.
Kinda shocked no one said did you make sure you have USB set for mass storage? Thats usually the most common thing to miss. If your using ICS I'm gonna take the guess of HFS? Which i know for a fact he posted the update morfic kernel so you can use mass storage. If your not using HFS, then you should try it first and then worry about the USB.
This is ROM independent. I've used pretty much all ROMS for the G2x, most recently Owain's ICS, Weapon and right now HFP - all experience this issue. As stated in the original post, though, it doesn't work with the APX drivers when trying to flash CWM or go back to stock. No matter which ROM, when plugging in to Windows, there is not the distinctive sound that a device has been added.

Check your device manager in the properties (open computer, right click, selct properties, should be the first or second option on the right side, will open in a new window). Open the option all the way at the bottom and you should see something like USB ADB storage device. If its there then you should be able to access it. USB debug and USB mass storage should both be on, try adding "allow mock locations," and if none of the above work, try doing it the old fashioned way. Get the Micro SD adaptor and plug it into the computer that way.
Hi all i am new to this site and hopefully somebody can help. I got a galaxy s3 and every time i try connect to my pc the mtp driver fails to load. I have tried 3 different pc's both on vista and windows 7. I also tried kies and i won't recognize the phoen either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
same here
i am experiencing the same problem. i have even reinstalled windows 7 ultimate (64 bit) to try to remedy the problem. still not working. the only programs added to win7 at this point are kies, firefox and chrome
i also tried to connect to a linux mint 12 box and i get the message that it can't find the program required on the computer to open.
it is really frustrating. i am going to try the google found method of unplugging my phone (which i plug in with the provided cable from samsung), and then:
1. removing kies (again)
2. removing drivers (again)
3. rebooting
4. installing kies
5. reinstalling drivers
6. connect phone in USB debug mode (there is no longer a kies option in s3) and let it install the other drivers.
7. unplug phone and turn off usb debugging
8. reconnect phone and hope for the best.
i will advise on how this goes.
blah
well, still stuck. tried the above method twice, and still no progress. i have tried many different ports, and have completely removed all usb devices except for the galaxy s3. i have tried both the 100mA ports and the 500mA ports. neither one will install the SAMSUNG Mobile MTP Device.
i am now at my wits end, as i have a laptop with vista and am receiving the same message.
i am sooo frustrated at this point. i guess i will have to use the Kies Air until i can get this working, which really makes it difficult, as that is not my main pc with all my music/videos on it.
i wonder if there is an app that might connect rather than relying on samsung mtp?
I have just talked to tmobile and it is a know issue with this phone, they are working on an update to the phones software and told me it should be available shortly. Hope this helps
samsung s3 and mtp issues
Same here have spent 2 days and tried everything to then find this thread, why don't Samsung recognize the problem. I am with vodafone so hope they react quickly.
workaround
i bought a micro adapter and am just switching out my external sd's. it's a pain, but at least i have mah music and vids.
Problem solved!!!!!!!! After many tries i removed the sim card from the phone and tried connecting the phonewith out the sim card and found everything worked normal, all the drivers loaded and the pc recognized my phone. So went to tmobile got a new sim card and now everything works great. So if you are having this issue try connecting without the sim card and if it connects normal then you know what the problem is. Hope this helps!!!!!!!!!!
Solved another way
Had the same problem with my Verizon S3. Tried the usual uninstall/reinstall with no luck, then got on the Samsung tech support chat site with "Nadia". Here is what we did (and it took some trial and error). Turned on debugging mode, drivers automatically tried to reinstall and failed again, then I switched the USB port (from one that supports faster charging to one that supports USB 3.0), the drivers reinstalled again, and it worked. Here is the chat transcript:
info: Please wait for a Samsung Agent to respond.
info: You are now chatting with 'Nadia'. There will be a brief survey at the end of our chat to share feedback on my performance today.
info: Your Issue ID for this chat is LTK56401322851X
Nadia: Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Visitor: I have tried to install the device software on my Windows 7 PC to support the Verizon Galaxy S3. I keep getting "SAMSUNG Mobile MTP Device Failed" errors. I have uninstalled the drivers and software, rebooted, and reinstalled three times with the same result. This is a Win 7 64 bit machine. Any ideas?
Nadia: I understand that you have an issue downloading a software on the device. Is that correct?
Visitor: No. I have the software. The problem is that it will not install on my computer properly. As a result, my PC cannot see the phone when it is connected to the USB port.
Nadia: Thank you for correcting me.
Nadia: Are you referring to SCH-I535?
Visitor: yes
Nadia: Thank you.
Nadia: May I know if the USB debugging mode is ON on the phone?
Nadia: Please check mark USB Debugging option under Applications >> Settings >> Applications >> Development on the device.
Visitor: no it is not
Nadia: Please check mark the USB debugging mode and try.
Visitor: I have turned it on. Is that what you want?
Nadia: Yes.
Visitor: The PC now is trying to re-install the drivers
Nadia: Let me know if the drivers are reinstalled succesfully.
Visitor: The USB composite device, mobile usb modem and ADB interface were successful. The Mobile MTP Device failed
Nadia: Please right click on MY Computer>>Select Properties>>Hardware>>Device Manager>>Click on Samsung USB drivers and click on Update.
Visitor: Windows says it is up to date.but the device status is "the device cannot start (code 10)"
Nadia: Okay. Please perfrom the below step while the debugging option is on and try to connect.
Nadia: Please follow the steps mentioned below to perform a soft reset on your Phone.
1. Turn off the handset.
2. Remove the battery and wait for 30 seconds.
3. Reinsert the battery and turn ON the device.
Visitor: ok
Nadia: Please perform the above steps and let me know the status.
Visitor: Just removed the battery I have short fingernails and it is difficult to get the back cover off.
Nadia: I am sorry to hear that.
Visitor: just restarted it
Nadia: Okay.
Visitor: shall I reconnect it now?
Nadia: Yes. Please connect it and let me know the status.
Visitor: It's trying to reinstall the MTP driver.
Nadia: May I know if the installation is successful?
Visitor: Computer is still thinking
Visitor: Failed. Windows says the device cannot start
Nadia: May I know if you are using the USB cable which came along with the device?
Visitor: yes
Nadia: Okay.
Nadia: Please give me a moment while I go through the inquiry.
Visitor: ok
Nadia: Please try to connect to another USB port of the PC and check?
Visitor: ok
Nadia: Thank you.
Visitor: That worked!
congrats! did you have your sd card installed or out when this worked?
Well I had many conversations with Brian in the Kies support team for Samsung, end result - don't know how to fix this, will add you to an ever growing list of people who are unable to get this to work, we will contact you once we think we have a fix. So if you are running XP SP3 and you can't get mtp to load I am afraid you are knackered.......
I hope someone finds a fix or samsung sends an update out soon...This is driving me crazy...
i tried to get it to sync with a couple of linux boxes as well, to no avail...
Success! Well, here is how I got it to FINALLY install the MTP driver.
Navigated to:
Settings >>> Data and Backup >>> Factory Data Reset
When it asked me to set up my google account i chose "Not Now"
After also cancelling the dropbox creation/signin, I then plugged the phone in and...
Boom!
Driver installed successfully.
Now to enter my google account info and see if the driver can start...
So, this method works. after the driver installed successfully, I set up google, as well as all of my other previously downloaded applications. Connecting the phone now works, the driver has no issues.
btw, I am running win7 64 bit (ultimate) and now am happily transferring files the easy way!
Just waiting for my 64GB micro card to arrive, then life will be back to normal...
Thanks to XDA for all of the tips I received!:victory:

Installed first time on a windows 7 machine, no changing anything - installed the driver straight away and kies runs. So my problem is linked to xp.
Possible Fix...
I finally managed to get my MTP problem fixed for my galaxy s3.
First I plugged my phone to my PC and when my USB notification popped up on the top of my phone screen. Pull down your notifications and you will see "Connected as a media device Touch for other USB options" I did this and selected "Camera (PTP)" I then reconnected to the PC.
This allowed me to acces my phone and SD card in explorer but did not connect to Kies. So change back to MTP mode (media)
I then went into Device Manager and right clicked on MTP Device that had a yellow ! mark next to it, and went to properties > Driver tab > Uninstall.
!!***NOTE When you select uninstall make sure you select the tick box underneath which says something like " also delete the driver software" ****!!
Once uninstalled, open Kies which should be 'waiting' for you to plug in your device, do so now with unistalled drivers and it should find the device and ask you to upgrade your firmware straight away, do so and start syncing away
**NOTE: I did a factory reset on my phone before this, so if the above does not work for you, factory reset your phone and repeat the above steps***
If this starts to work please let me and other people know, so we can spread the word, because this is becoming a common problem.

I finally have my S3 working perfectly now. It's all due to the above post, most importantly this line "When it asked me to set up my google account i chose "Not Now"." I had been trying everything I could find, on just about every site I could find. So, I came here to run through everyone's ideas. That was the key for me. I did the factory reset again...This time after boot, I said no, skip and later to everything. Plugged in the data cord and to my surprise within seconds it was done. I looked in C: There was a new section called "Portable Devices" with a folder containing the two storage areas -- card -- phone -- I've since put in all my info. ran in de-bugging and switched back -n- forth between MTP and PTP .... So far so good....I hope this helps add to the mystery, and I was not to talkative...thnx Div

Galaxy S3 + W7 Ultimate x64
Before I've tried to reboot phone,PC but not worked....after battery remove....worked...
Working
Awesome guys thanks. Got a friends working doing a combo of mentioned fixes...
WHAT DID NOT WORK:
1. Uninstalling Windows Drivers
2. Virtualised a Win 7 x32 bit as there was mention this was a 64 bit problem (I am using Win 7 Pro x64)
3. Changed the USB Connection Settings via the Notification pull down
4. Restarting phone
5. With and without SIM
6. Different USB Port
WHAT WORKED:
On Windows 7 Pro x64:
1. Uninstalled MTP Device Driver in windows with "uninstall driver" checked
On Phone:
2. Factory Reset Device
3. On first boot: Skip Samsung Account Setup
4. On first boot: Skip Google Account Setup
5. On first boot: Basically skipped everything to get to Home Screen
6. Plugged in phone, connected immediately in File Manager and Kies
This all seems to kick the phone into action and it worked on all computers that it previously did not (It worked on nothing previously)
We setup all the accounts, installed all the apps and it the phone still connects to the computer.
Samsung, wicked phone, but this is not good!
Thanks again to all. Good luck.
what fixed for me
i was running resurection remix rom had driver fail changed to fox hound rom now usb connects everytime.lol
so im trying to download some files on my compo to transfer to phone so i can unroot it and send it back to verizon. im on the latest beanstalk rom and when i hook up my phone to the comp, its saying unable to recognize the phone. any suggestions on what to do? i have debugging turned on in the developer options as well. thanks
Check drivers and try battery pull
ive restarted the phone and i havent had trouble in the past but ill double check the drivers. thanks
figured it out. its because i have kies installed. tried returning to stock through heimdall but was having an issue and installed kies for that. thanks though
I tell you what, I'm not a big fan of MTP especially with ubuntu. I had issues mounting, until i figured it out in Qualcomm usb settings in hidden menu. You would think our phone would mount easily out of the box.

For awhile I had no issue. Even after I realized that I had kies installed and uninstalled it, still had issues mounting it. Couldn't get it and couldn't get the file I need to flash in mobile odin. I have an old Mac btw running 10.5.8. I'm going to have to use a friend's comp to both root my new phone and transfer a stock Rom to return my phone to factory.
