Change default browser in system/app - Captivate General

I was wondering if it was possible to change a ROM's default browser that's in the dock? I know I can add a browser as an app but I only use one browser and didn't want icons all over the place so I figured I would ask if i could replace the default one with the one I use. I figuring the default browser is in system/app/browser.apk. Can I do this and if so how and if I could would I be able to use the browsers version updates.
Thanks,
Soggy

Try it! Rename stock to browser.apk.bak, or backup and uninstall it with tibu. Put browser of choice in /system/app and reboot, our just run the other browser from /data/app like normal.
If you have problems rename.the original back to the way it was, or restore it with tibu...

Yes it worked great.... Basically all it did was installed the .apk so I will be able to get updates which is good and now the globe icon is now the browser I wanted to use. I had to create a CWM file because for some reason when I went to replace it, it said I didn't have enough space or something. This has happened before and the only way is to CWM the file.
Recap: What I did was saved the browser.apk that my ROM I am using had and got my favorite browser .apk which is Maxthon and changed the name of that .apk to the same thing that was originally there AKA Browser.apk and switched files shazam!

HTC_IME mod

I'm running rooted stocked 2.1...5 with this mod installed. I tried to put it in the system/app folder because there is some room in there, since I removed some apps, but it did not like it. It just kept foreclosing it.
Any idea how to put it in there or even replace the original HTC_IME?
could have something to do with it being made for the nexus one

i've made one from there, and installed it. I didn't push it to /system/app.
try doing that.
also make sure you are using the low res option.

First make sure you downloaded the "lo" version, since Hero is low-res. And unpack the ZIP. It's not flashable, it's just zipped for convenience.
And then you can just install HTC_IME_lo.apk from your file manager by clicking it. There's no need to manually push it into /system/app. (It's registered differently from the default HTC_IME, so it can be installed like any normal application.) If you removed Clicker.apk while you were removing junk from /system/app, you'll need to reinstall that as well.
If you really want to replace the original HTC_IME, just rename HTC_IME_lo.apk to HTC_IME.apk and push it to /system/app. I think that's what you were trying to do before.
Hope this helps!
Oh, sorry I guess I forgot to mention that it is running fine in the user folder after installing it. It's just that I wanted to put in the system/app folder to save some space. I'll try renaming it and replacing with the stocked file. BTW, I'm typing on it now and its way better than the stocked because of how much customization you can do.
I finally tied this and it's a no go. Still get FC messages. However, all seems fine when I install it as an app. I think it's because the HTC_IME.odex file which is tied to the original. Even after rebooting it didn't work.
Anyone know how to get that odex file from the new HTC_IME I'm trying to install in the system/app folder?

Widgets?

I did a search.
I am looking for non Android and Samsung widgets.
I go to the widget menu and see nothing but the stock ones.
This means I can't add the weather widget, tweetcaster, etc.
I am using the Octane ROM.
Someone please help.
The easiest way to get those is to run a stock rom, not a custom one. Custom roms generally tend to move away from a Samsung style rom, to a more... true android type build.
Try flashing stock Kj6 (rooted of course). That will come with all of the stock samsung widgets.
Alternatively, you can download the stock kj6 CWM version (the zip one), unzip it, and look in system/apps and take out the apks of the desired widgets. Using root explorer, or something similar like Astro, copy and paste those apks to your phones system/app folder.
I don't recall every seeing tweetcaster though... just BuddiesNow, Feeds and Updates... hope it helps.

[REQ] Desire Default Live Wallpaper

I've searched and I can't find it so I wonder it any one can help, I've just installed a Sense 4.0 ICS ROM but I really miss the default bokeh live wallpaper that came on the Desire by default, it was on the Sensation originally but it appears to have been dropped for the newest version of Sense. Does anyone know where I can get it for my newly updated Sensation?
I'm also looking for it... There's a bunch of bokeh look alike LWs but I want the original that came with my sensation.
If nobody has it would anyone know how to get it from old gingerbread Rom and port it to ics??
I use this one?

Thanks for the link but I'm a fan of the original... I managed to pull the apk from an ics rom running sense 3.6 the only problem is that on roms with sense 4 the apk doesn't install. Any ideas on how to get it to work?
Use Root Explorer or ES File Manager's root mode and push the apk to /system/app/
Then, change the permissions to match the permissions of all the other apks there, I believe it's RW R R, but just match it to the others. To change permissions in Root Explorer, hold your finger on the file and hit Permissions or whatever. Not sure if ES can do it, but it probably can.
After it's in /system/app and the permissions are edited, reboot and it should show up in the Live Wallpaper list.
Edit: If that doesn't work, look up the APK signer. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...1bGwsMSwyLDEsImtlbGxpbndvb2Quemlwc2lnbmVyMiJd This is ZipSigner 2 and it works perfectly. Sign the APK, then try to install it using a file manager or something, you know, install it like normal. If it still doesn't install after being signed, use the method above and push it to /system/app and change the permissions, then it should run without issues.

Stock browser with UAstring option in settings menu

UPDATE: Got the user agent(ua string) in the settings menu! No longer need to do the framework-res.apk stuff. The new 4shared link is a modded browser.apk which you can choose between 5 user agents. Just rename the browser.apk in system/app to browser.apk.bak then move or copy the downloaded browser.apk to system/app and whola! you can install from there or just reboot (what I prefer) Again use root explorer or similar app to apply this. removed old link browser.apk is the new link in the above source file. works with Tweaked 3.1 (tested) and you can still use about:debug in the address bar for the remaining options
I like it... but I use an emulator at work that will not work in android mode...works only in desktop and both apple devices... so I am guessing it just makes it look like those operating systems cause I tried them with the emulator and gave the same errors as if still in android mode...and if you don't use an emulator... then who cares right?

Editing downloaded TW themes.

I am using a theme that I downloaded from the theme store, however I wondering if there's any way to edit the downloaded theme. For example I am wanting to keep the stock touchwiz keyboard and still have everything else themed.

I would think you find the keyboard in secsettings2 or whatever file all the system core files are in from the stock theme, copy it and replace it with the themed keyboard apk, and don't forget to set permissions to rx-rx-r? That's my best bet. @SICKMADE ? Am I close?

There's an easy way around it. If you're applying theme from theme store, all you have to do is delete theme.input files
Any app that deletes .apk files, will work.
Example*
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...roid.optimizer
Just find the .apk and delete than reboot. profit
Hit the thanks button if I helped you out ?

Yeah I did something like that, after I found the file I added a .bak extention to the end making it a backup, rebooted, and I got my stock keyboard back.

All you have to do is use a root file manager like root browser then go into your data/app folder there you will find all the apps you have installed onto your device including every individual themed apk from whatever theme you downloaded and installed from Sammy theme store... if there is something that you don't like or want from a particular theme ie. Icons or keyboard just simply scroll until you see all the apps from the theme you installed and delete which ever themed app folder that you don't want. Hope that made some sense lol.
