I know a work around is to set the same gmail account in your email app. But imo that's kind of duplicate and potentially could cause conflict or redundant data in your contact/calendar/email.
So, by any chance, is there a way we can simply make the email app to also show that gmail account without adding that account again in email app? Since when we activate the phone, this account is already there registered on our phones... gmail app can capture it, why not email app? just some thoughts...
Why would you want to do this? I just use the gmail app

I agree, you would lose all the functionality of Gmail if you did this...
The gmail app gives you push notifications. If you use the email app it will effect your battery life depending on how often you set it to poll.

The Gmail app is not integrated with HTC's People app and I doubt if it will be as it is proprietary Google code and not part of android. If you want to see your Gmail show up, you should add it as an exchange/imap/pop account using the regular mail app. I have both the Gmail app as well as an imap account for my Gmail. That way, I can see my gmail under people and have the convenience of push email with the gmail app without drawing too much battery.
1) It constantly tells me I have new emails when in fact I don't. It can be an email I received an hour ago. I'll still get 2 more notices that it is a new email even if I have read it or deleted it. I have notifications turned off for Gmail, but I am also using the regular email client to access Gmail. No matter the notification I get I think I am seeing the email via the regular phone email client.
2) Gchat, how do I bring this up? if someone Gchat's me I get a notification. but i can't seem to find a way to start a gChat conversation with someone on my phone.
Gchat is under Gtalk and that where you would go to reply to them. My Gmail has yet to give me any problems so I can't help you with that. Maybe you should try deleting your account and adding it again.
The problem isn't Gmail, it's the default client. Any time it downloads a message from the server, you get a new mail notification whether it has been read or not. This means that every time you delete a message the message it loads to replace the deleted message will trigger a new message notification. This would happen for any e-mail account.
That behavior caused me to just avoid using the default mail app altogether. I just use the pre-installed Gmail app instead.
Yeah I have the same issue with the defaul Email app. When I delete a new message 30 minutes later when the refresh is run it loads up an old email message I have responded to or dealt with 100x stating its new and alerts me of it.

Well from reading the message it looks like he is using the Gmail app but it is giving him problems. I do not use the email app that comes with the captivate because I can not use my yahoo account on it. I do not know. We should wait for the OP to reply and see if he is using the Gmail app or the Email app.

No, i wasn't very clear i guess. I'm using the standard email client to access gmail.
The email program that came with the Captivate give me tons of problems, one is the problem with showing new email but there is none.
I've been using the gmail email app for gmail. For non gmail accounts I use MailDroid.
Hi all.
I've recently bought my very first smartphone which is running Android 2.1. I'm absolutely loving it so far but I have a couple of questions regarding security.
Soon after setting up Android I configured the Google Mail app to sync with my Google Mail account, which is my primary email address.
I've noticed that whenever I open the Google Mail app it displays thousands of my emails, some of which contain very personal and sensitive information. My concern is that if somebody was to steal my phone and get passed the pretty basic key lock, they will have access to all of my emails over the past few years!
I've been told that it's not possible to password protect it or log out of the account; is that true?
I've tried to remove my Google Mail account from the app but it gives me the message:
This account is required by some applications. You can only remove it by resetting the phone to factory defaults (which deletes all your personal data). You do that in the Settings application, under Privacy.

Surely I don't have to do a factory reset just to remove my Google Mail account?
Any help would be appreciated.

I've done that already but as soon as I reopen the Google Mail app all of my messages reappear.
I've now archived all of my emails in Gmail and removed them from my inbox so they have now stopped showing in the Google Mail app but any new messages will appear.
I just don't understand why it's not possible to remove my account from the application.

I only want to remove it from the Google Mail application on Android so that if my phone was stolen or got into the wrong hands they don't have access to thousands of personal and sensitive emails.
I don't see my gmail accounts in the messaging app. When i try to add them through the messaging app I get a message that the account already exists. I've tried deleting them and reinstall them through the messaging app but the gmail account still isn't there.
Anyone have any ideas?
Havn't ever used the mesaging app, but sorta seems like extra steps if you could just use the Gmail app itself?
Yeah, I would agree. The Gmail app was made to be used for just Gmail.
I know it seems counter intuitive to use two different apps, if you have several mail accounts like I do, but I actually like having my Gmail on it's own.
Hopefully i am not interpreting the OP incorrectly.
But for me to see my gmail account in the messaging app, I had to add it as an "Email" type account and not a "Google" account.
Menu > Accounts > Add Account > Email > Enter Gmail email address and leave automatically configure account checked. Follow the on screen prompts to complete setup.

It is kinda redundant, but it does work for the messaging app and Universal inbox.
kirkgbr - thanks for the info, that worked.
JRW 28 and jimbridgman - while I don't dislike the gmail app, I like having an universal inbox where I can see all my accounts (gmail and non-gmail) in one place.
is there any way to have sense see the gmail app as an email app?
for example the productivity look screen will only show emails from the htc email app

Don't think so, gmail doesn't seem to be very integrated into htc sense.
You can forgo the gmail app and add your gmail account as exchange account to the default email app.

I have my other devices set up this way, but never thought to try it with Android because...well it's google. Do you prefer it that way? I've had Android since the G1 was released and never tried anything but the Gmail app

I don't know if it's better or whatever, but I am using clean rom Dev edition and the AOSP email app so I can pinch to zoom I've read arguments that polling email this way uses less battery, but who knows. The only reason I remember the trick is because it was the only way to get push email from Gmail on my iPhone
I would also love gmail to be recognized as an email app.
