Hello, all!
I'm trying edit a file in /etc/ and adb says 'Failed to copy: Read-only filesystem'
Now, is this actually true? Or is this simply a permissions issue? I'm doing this on a non-rooted phone, so I can't 'touch' anything without permission errors, but is it a futile task if the filesystem is read only anyway?
I'm trying to do this from a non-rooted environment as I had intended on making this into an application, but I imagine that if I can't touch or push these files from an adb shell then I won't be able to from the application space either.
It's frustrating not to be able to edit the filesystem of my own phone, I'll be rooting if this is just a permissions problem and not an issue of a non-writable filesystem. Perhaps I could still make an application for rooted-only phones.. hrm..
Any thoughts on this?
/etc is an alias for /system/etc, and /system is a partition mounted as ro (you can confirm this yourself by running mount)

you need to mount it read write,

then it will be read/write
try adb remount. if it failes you need root sorry.

what is the error message? saying it dont work doesnt provide enough info for us to help....
it says sh: cant open aw.sh
so i still have to put the path or cd to where the file is. Is there a way to make /system my home?
no you cant make system your home, system is system, home is home. you can make a symlink if you are familiar with linux - might want to read up about shell commands

You *CAN'T* modify the / filesystem. It is part of your BOOT partition, which CANNOT be remounted rw. You would have to read, modify, and write the boot partition.

Maybe you're typing it in too literally. It should actually read like this:
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
There was a typo with -oremount, there should be a space after -o.
Hope that helps.
PS. That command worked for me on a device where everything else failed.

Hi I have my Asus Prime rooted and installed a virtuous Rom and I tried to put a fonts on the System/ fonts folder using root explorer using a instructions to fix some error on some games that need that tis fonts exist on the tablet but it said it cant because file system is read only I'm new and I don't know how to do this commands any help on how to do in a easy (explained) form.

Download EStrong File Manager and within the settings of it, enable mounting of the system as read/write.
Or, download Terminal Emulator and type this in:

Or, try typing this in terminal/cmd:

Or, if you plan on doing it all from recovery you could do:

and then you could do it all from there.

problem: this extSdcard is seen as a readonly filesystem.
What has to be done to make this FS RW instaed of RO ?

Hi Everyone,
I have some good news for the owners of Samsung Galaxy 5 (i5500) Smartphones.
Doing some research on Google and reading about efforts from other people who could install applications on SD card on other android phones, I was able to develop a method to install application into SD card for the Galaxy 5. Better yet, you won't even need a custom Rom.
Before I get into the specifcs let me state that the following steps are manual and no application is provided to automate the process, so advanced computer skill is required and some knowledge of unix/linux is a plus.
Here we go: PLEASE READ THE WHOLE THING BEFORE YOU START. I MAY HAVE OMMITED SOME COMMANDS OUT OF LACK OF ATTENTION.
1) You'll need to root your phone. There is a lot of guides about this available, just google for it. I've used the SuperOneClick Root to do this.
2) Partition your sd card like this: 1 - FAT, 2 - Linux ext2. Again, there is a lot of guides about this on the net, just google again. I've used Paragon Partition Manager 2010 to lower the size of my FAT partition, leaving a 550MB unallocated space at the end of the card. Then I formatted this space as ext2 in linux, using ubuntu live CD. Most guides around there recommends that you keep this partition between 500~750MB, so I didn’t try with greater sizes. Also, i kept my partition 1 as FAT 16, but FAT 32 might actually work too, try that if you want and post me a reply.
3) Download Titanium Backup (or another app backup tool) from market and backup your applications. You may need to restore your applications to correct some permission problems that may occur after completing this guide.
4) Install busybox. BusyBox is a software application that provides many standard Unix tools, which are not available on stock android. You can get a copy of busybox by clicking on “problems?” button on Titanium Backup main window. It will get installed on /data/data/com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup/files.
5) If you still don’t have Android SDK installed on your PC, download and install it from Google. You’ll need ADB (Android Debug Bridge), which is included in the SDK, to proceed. Now open a shell connection with your device by typing:

Just keep in mind that you MUST be logged as root. Root command prompt is recognized by the # character. If you don’t have root type the ‘su’ command. If even with ‘su’ you couldn’t get root, please review step 1.
6) Create ‘sd’ folder int /system:

7) Mount ext2 partition into /system/sd

mount -t ext2 /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 /system/sd
8) Create a folder to store the applications into ext2 partition:

mkdir app
9) Copy busybox to /system/bin

chmod 755 /system/bin/busybox
10) Copy your applications to ext2 partition:

11) Change permissions of copied applications:

12) Now comes the tricky part: making Android mount your new partition at boot time. All the hard work would be useless if Android discarded the mount points every time we restarted our phones. To do this we’ll need to create 2 scripts and store then into /system/etc. Obviously the scripts should be started by init.rc and need to run as root. Fortunately Android’s init.rc have a gap that makes this possible. The scripts are named install-recovery.sh and init-sd2.sh.

If you plan to edit this files on windows I recommend a tool that is capable of keeping UNIX file format, just like notepad++ free tool.
13) After placing the scripts, change their permissions:

chmod 555 install-recovery.sh
chmod 555 init-sd2.sh
14) Rename the default application folder. If everything works fine you can remove this later to save space:

mv app app_old
mkdir app
chown system.system app
chmod 755 app
15) Restart your phone and cross your fingers
16) If you have problems with your widgets don’t worry. You just need to remove then from your homescreen and add again.
17) Check if your applications are running as they should. Restore backups you’ve made with Titanium Backup for the applications showing problems.
18) If your partition didn’t mount at boot, check log file at /data/install-recovery.log
19) From now on your new applications will be installed on your SD Card. You can modify the scripts to store other folders from /data into the ext2 partition as needed. I’ve been running my applications from SD Card for a week now without any problems or bugs.
20) If you can’t make it work, post your question here and I will try to help you out.

about the scripts, u can check with root explorer, try to view the script and make sure it was the exact same from the script above, coz i experience the same problem for the first time i try this. if u sure that the script are same then try to execute it using root explorer and then go to titanium backup and see if there is there is another storage (usually there is internal and SD card only).

use the root explorer to copy the script to /system/etc, don't forget to change the root explorer option from R/O to R/W, this option should be on top of the page, just touch it to change from R/O to R/W.

In your PC command prompt execute:

Make sure you are loged in as root and in ADB SHELL try this:

My knowledge of Android is very limited, I know a little about Linux from Ubuntu at command promt level, but not enough to fix this issue I'm having. Any help would be much appreciated.
I wish to modify a file which Android is telling me is locked. It's \system\etc\bluetooth\audio.config
I have found a modification to this file which may help me in connecting the Tab to a bluetooth peripheral I have.
I have rooted the Tab
I have installed a root file manager
I have installed a terminal app
I have tried to chmod this file when logged in as su, but this refused so still I cannot edit the file.
I read somewhere about mounting the system folder as rw, but this is a bit beyond my knowledge. So if this is necessary I need walking through this step-by-step.
Could someone please help me by posting some instructions to get me to the point where I can edit the file audio.config?

You may still not be able to modify a file so copy it to /mnt/sdcard/file and edit it there and rename the source file when ready to mv it back in.
mount -o remount,ro /dev/mtdblock3 /system
when done.
This worked for me on my new Galaxy Tab Wifi after using A4 to root it.
Here is what I've tried:
1. Settings -> about tablet to get kernel version: 2.6.32.39-cyanogenmod [email protected] #1
2. Go to http://droidbasement.com/db-blog/ and find the kernel for gTab. There are several one, I just picked one with Gingerbread and downloaded
lib-2632.39_gb.tar.gz
Unpack on put cifs.ko under /system/lib/modules
3. Install CIFS Manger
4. Run CIFS Manager, add the share
5. If there is problem mount it in rw mode, use option "rw,noperm" (thanks, rajeevvp)
The share is successfully mounted.

After pushing the cifs module to the tablet you need to add an chmod and then you also need a insmod line every time you want to use it (at least after following a reboot).
Go back and read the instructions on droid basement. He has the details of the steps following loading the cifs.ko.

No, you don't.
CIFS Manager should have an option to do a read-write mount.
Otherwise, you can try changing the mounting back into read-write mode:

# /system/xbin/mount -w -o remount /CIFS/PATH
Replace, /CIFS/PATH with the directory you provided to CIFS Manager.
Also, understand my cautions, as mentioned in the other thread, about mixing and matching kernels and kernel modules. I would suggest that you also install the kernel that goes with the module file you downloaded--ie. get the one in the same blog post.
Appreciate your advice on not mixing kernel and modules. I could not tell which exact build CM 7 uses so I had to pick one. When I get more experienced with Android, I may start changing kernels.

Cm7 includes pershoots kernel. The gb one.

not to confuse issue with whatop is having but I wonder if anyone has run into a problem with cifs in which it doesn't include all of the folders from your windows shares.

3. Install CIFS Manger
4. Run CIFS Manager, add the share

Yes, by default it should be mounted read-write. If, for some reason, it gets mounted read-only, you can use the remount command I gave earlier to make the mount read-write again.
But, there could be other reasons for you not being able to write to the share directory. Permission and UID/GID mismatches could be one reason. Try adding the "noperm" flag to tell Linux not to check permissions locally ie. do the permission checking only on Windows:

Which system file? If you mean /etc/fstab, then that file does not exist on Android.
CIFS Manager (I haven't used it) should have an option to let you store the password securely. On normal Unix systems, the mount command accepts a "credentials=/some/file.txt" option which can be used in place of the "domain=XXX,username=YYY" options when mounting. Unfortunately, the mount command on the gTablet does not understand that option--I checked: you have to do it the old-fashioned way. You can't even skip the "password=" bit. On Unix, if you skip that, the mount command will prompt you for the password.
The solution, if you don't use CIFS Manager, is to place all the commands--the insmod and the mount--into a shell-script and give it 700 permissions. That way only the owner can see what's inside it and you can run the script after the wireless has come up.

Could you explain the exact process for doing this from a terminal emulator. My main hold up is the /system directory being read only, so I can't copy the module (CIFS.KO in this case) to that directory.

You don't need to put cifs.ko into /system. If CIFS Manager asks for the path to a cifs.ko file, then you can put the file anywhere you want.
I have a new problem. There seems to be a limit on the file size. I have a 3 GB file shows up as 28 KB. Does anyone have success with large file? Thanks

2. so I tried to put the cifs.ko in the /mnt/cifs.ko, and made the related setting in cifs manager(path to cifs.ko), then i mounted, but it showed that:"no route to host"
but i am sure that my ip and password is correct... so is there anyone know how to solve this problem?
I used Root Explorer. I am sure there are other means to put it under /system. I am not sure if that's necessary

I literally just went through this today. Download Terminal Emulator (free on the market).
PS: Don't type the '#' sign below.
#su
#/system/xbin/mount -w -o remount /system
#cp /SDCARD/cifs.ko /system/lib/modules/2.6.32.41-cyanogenmod/
#/system/xbin/mount -r -o remount /system
Then, just add the path /system/lib/modules/2.6.32.41-cyanogenmod/ into CIFS Manager. Should be all set.

File size limits depend on the underlying filesystem.
I tried the following command on an external NTFS formatted USB HDD connected to a Linux desktop mounted on the gTablet at /mnt/usbdisk via CIFS, and had no problems.

140+1 records in

147102720 bytes (140.3MB) copied, 150.135761 seconds, 956.8KB/s
The command skips the initial 7.5 GB of a 8,011,422,720 byte file and reads the rest (~140 MB).

I had the same issue, but I found the guide on abettergeek which helped me fix it. Turns out the problem is that the mount point created by Cifs Manager doesn't have execute permissions.
I don't have enough seniority to post the link, but it's a recent post on abettergeek.com. If someone with enough seniority wants to paste it, some others may find it extremely helpful.

I have the same issue. I haven't tried this fix yet, but I will give it a go.

Pls, where I can put "rw,noperm" in cifs manager? I tried in module path as:
/system/lib/modules/slow-work.ko:/system/lib/modules/cifs.ko rw,noperm
And:
/system/lib/modules/slow-work.ko:/system/lib/modules/cifs.ko:rw,noperm
But still don't working as rw.

I'm using the Tiamat Custom ROM and am facing the problem, that the external SDcard is mounted on /mnt/external1 and symlinked to /MicroSD. But I'm using an app that needs it mounted on /sdcard-ext.
Now I have remounted / and symlinked /mnt/external1 to /sdcard-ext and that works until my next reboot (the symlink isn't reboot-proof ;-) ). Now I'm searching for a way to automatically create that symlink on each reboot.
Can anyone help me?

Create a script in /etc/init.d to do it.
You'll need to remount / to read+write first though.
PM me if you need help setting this up -- its really easy to do. You need to name your script with a specific run level (I believe).
I've done this on my phone to set up swap partitions and the like. Its really easy!!!
