Awesome find!!!

Haven't read the full changelog but I don't see it benefiting us at this point from the minimal I have seen. It has added video chat which we don't have a front facing camera for so not sure what all devs can do to use this for us thats different from 2.3.3.
Might be the fix I'm looking for! Even if phone has rear cam I do use it for video calls to show where I am, but all 2.3 roms don't let me see incoming video properly :/

Yeah, I know what you mean. This is going to be great for my tablet though. Dual core support and video chat

Question: Does tango video chat work? Or even fring video chat?? Qik sucks... and to think skype bought them. Good luck skype.
not work with the front camera. and un-able to switch.
super slow!( in same city)
Market comments for Tango suggest that they will release an update for g2x support. As it is, everything works except initiating the forward facing camera, lol.

Hope the update comes out soon...
qik actually works like a cham on this phone
I hated qik on my mt4g tho

It works to record and send video mail. Unfortunately, the only person I know who has a front-facing video camera that I would want to video chat with is on an iPhone 4, and the Qik software on iPhone and Android are mutually incompatible at the moment. They say they are working on a fix, expected sometime "around the middle of April" (which, in case anyone hasn't looked at a calendar in a while, has come and gone). Oh, well, I'm sure it will be RSN...
I've tested qik with another fellow g2x user not bad, but1.3 mega pixel sucks

Hey guys,
I just wanted to let you all know that Tango is aware of the front facing camera issues on the G2x. Our engineers are investigating the issue and we hope to release a fix for this soon. We have not forgot about you guys
Stay tuned!
Ive tried fringe with no luck, even tried yahoo video with same results. Only app I know of right now that supports g2x front facing cam is qwik. Its not a bad software just not particulary great.

Just wondering if anyone has tried this now that we have a leak version of Gingerbread.

excellent question
I have successfully installed the gapps file that they ported for the Evo. It installs fine and when I open up gTalk it shows me as video chat available, it shows my available friends that have video, but when I try to do a video call it force closes.

Here is where I got the file from.

I didnt install anything but the leaked GB rom and radio and if you go to contacts it shows a web cam looking camera at the bottom. I dont have any friends on this so cant test but from what I can tell its already included?
Yup works great except for they see me sideways.
!!Not Working!!

You call that great? all the videochat apps work just fine (as advertised) in froyo: tango, fring, qik, skype mobile (leaked not official).

I think that for my money Qik or Tango do just fine
Got it working (kind of) using latest CM7 build, direction is now the correct way but no microphone doesn't work. I can hear them but they can not hear me.

Doesn't a non-functional microphone kind of make it useless?
Qik and Tango do just fine. So does Fring (which also has group video) and the leaked Skype (of you're running a Froyo ROM. But this isn't about settling for just fine, or second fiddle, or just good enough. This is about figuring out a way to get gTalk working with Video Chat. Advantages is you can chat with someone on a phone, tablet, or a PC. To be honest I probably would not even use it much, it is just that I want to help because maybe others might have a bigger need for it. I know my wife loves it on her Evo and our Xoom. I figured since it has been leaked to the Evo for over two weeks now and now that we got a 2.3.4 ROM, we should be getting close.

Sweetness.
Cool, Just downloaded it. Love video chat, would rather have Talk w/Video too.
Useless. Unless there is a way to change the video only being captured on the back camera...
Please post here if you have completed a video call with the front facing camera.
EDIT: this is a know issue with Froyo listed here:

Is anyone on GB able to complete a call?

From market: "On Android 2.2 (Froyo), only the back camera will work. This is because only devices running Android OS 2.3 or higher allow apps to access the front facing camera."
From market: "On Android 2.2 (Froyo), only the back camera will work. This is because only devices running Android OS 2.3 or higher allow apps to access the front facing camera."
That statement is not correct...oovoo works using the front facing camera on the charge using Froyo.

Something like that. I was able to use the FFC and Skype with my coworker's iPhone4.
Just tested Skype with Gingerbread, front camera works fine. Although you have to hold the phone horizontal for some reason.
Update to leaked GB
The leaked GB will allow Skype to work with the FFC. I've used it a couple times now. Works fairly well... now for Verizon to actually release a major update... waiting... waiting...
and before anyone asks, i've only tried with the Gingerbread Stock EP1f (Android 2.3.4) out of the CHARGE KIT v2. Talk Video isn't working for me yet...
Oh, and it is actually an issue with FroYo. The API stuff for front facing camera access was only added in Gingerbread. Presumably the API the other apps are using to access the front facing camera is non-standard.
Maybe non standard, but other less known names took the time to make it work.
Fring works fine with the front camera.

Seeing as how 2 people have already pointed out that apps can use the front facing cam on Froyo, I'm guessing this is a false statement.

I guess you could call them lazy for not using device-specific API, but I'd say it's a justified engineering decision.
I can't even find information about how to access the front camera on FroYo. Can you post a link that explains how to do it?
Skype 2.1.0.46
New version of Skype released yesterday. Video calls are working on my Inspire. Just wanted to share in case anyone missed it
not working here.
Out of curiosity, what's the point without a forward facing camera? Do you use a mirror?
Sent from my Unity Inspire 4G.
I used it for testing and its better than the one in yahoo. Its not that I really don't have a choice cos xperia arc don't have front camera, but the arc camera is known to be of superb quality. Also its nice to be talking to someone while showing your surroundings or someone to them. That's the point of the rear camera

I installed Skype thinking I could enjoy video chatting, but it tells me that if I have Froyo that I can only use the main camera, not the secondary. Are there any apps that make use of the secondary cam of the Triumph for the purpose of video chat?
You can use yahoo messenger it works pretty well
Sent from my MOTWX435KT using XDA App
I don't have the Triumph (yet) but try Fring or Tango.
Tango works on the Triumph.
anybody used triumph for video chat using front facing camera? how is the quality?
I used Tango last week with my brother (he was using a MyTouch 4G) on 2 bar 3g coverage. Video quality looked great. Audio quality was inconclusive on account that he was chatting from a party at a bar. lol

video quality is pretty good with tango but the sound was terrible phone to phone, weird crashing sounds in a perfectly quiet room

That's true for Google Talk Video... but not for Tango. I am running Tango perfectly on a rooted Triumph 2.2
As soon as CM7 is ported for the Triumph, I will install Google Talk Video!!!

THANK YOU! Works great for me
Tested it one a couple of separate calls, and both were surprised by the quality of the video. Thank you so much for the great hack.
Tango works for me, with decent coverage that is. Usually can't hear the other person though.

What makes this different from the one on the Market? I haven't had a chance to try out any video calls, but it seems to be the exact same and still tells me that 2.2 won't let me use the front-facing camera.

Except that there is another settings menu that will let you choose your front facing camera. It works well, and I thought the same thing at first until I had done a little poking around and found the added menu.

Oh ok cool. I had looked but didn't see anything. I'll have to try that out.
I tried Tango and it rawks. I am long distance dating a woman in Australia, and Tango allows us free calls (international rates are insane), AND video using my front camera. I am very pleased.
