What sensor is the Car Home app using? - T-Mobile LG G2x

When I looked at the battery history in the 4636 menu, I noticed that under sensor, the car home app was using a lot of it.
I'm not really sure what it means, its probably something simple. Thought I would share

Magnetic sensor. Apparently the car docks have a magnet somewhere that automatically activates car mode. If you look, you'll see people complaining about the car home app coming on at random, and in every case they had a case with a magnetic clip.

Yup, every time I pulled it from my holster it would set it off. I don't use it so I froze it. It's a easy fix.

I just deleted it...its a useless app for me

[REQUEST] [APP] speaker switcher?

Hey guys i currently upgraded from the nokia n900 to the nexus one. I had this great app on the n900 where it used the proximity sensor to switch the phone call to speaker when its away from your face and then switch back to the regular phone "ear" speaker when its against your face. I tried looking for something like it i downloaded "smart call" and it kinda works but it uses the accelermeter to determine the phones orientation. any help is appreciated THANKS!
This is a surprisingly good idea...
I really want this function also.
I had this in my Touch Pro2 but that used both proximity sensor and accelerometer so when i put the phone on a table with the screen down it started speakerphone. As soon as I picked it up it changed back.
Really good feature if you´re put in hold, waiting for someone to answer.
+1
Brilliant idea.
Ya its great! so basically when the screen turns on when you pull it away from your face so does the speaker lol i think its simple enough for the developers to create right?
nothing?
deng 200 views and no love.
You might want to try asking this in the Tasker thread. I'm not familiar with the program, but it might be able to do what you want.
+1 This is a great idea. I just spent 45 minutes on the phone with Time Warner and was on hold 5-6 times, this would have been handy.
I know for a fact this would suck on my n1. The only noticeable problem i have on my n1 is my prox. sensor sucks, alot of the time it thinks that my head is away from my phone and i end up muting myself and not realizing it and then getting hung up on. Very annoying

Mine does the same thing, but like djstoffe had on his Touch Pro2 we should implement the accelerometer so we don't get any 'false alarms'.
After a 12 hours working day I needed to relax a bit...
I just decided to write the app as I like the idea but I'm not sure on the concept how to use it... have to sleep about it.
Anyway you can play with the attached apk and if you would post me a logcat, that would be nice and i can see on which devices/rom's it doesn't behave like on my Nexus with CM6...
Code:
adb logcat|grep SpeakerProximity
Just fire up the app and there is a preference view where you can set it on or off with a combobox.
It's working on my phone but as I'm sleepy I can't test it any further but if you like the app and think it could be usefull, just post your comments and I see that I turn it into a optimized app (this is just a quick afterwork writedown)
Before I forget, I will post the sourcecode after I cleaned up my mess and maybe also write a short tutorial on how I did write this app ;-)
Added a new Version in post #27 => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7972710&postcount=27
WORKS GREAT THANKS!!!

Thanks so much for stepping up and making this, rac2030. I just tested it on my phone and it works great!
Works like a charm!! Thumbs up!!!
Hmmm... scary that it's working without probs... did test it today a bit but expected bugs: because I was tired and just wrote out of my head.
Could you guys feed me some lolcat to see if the values are always right or as I asumed?
Ok came across a problem. Is there a way that the app keeps running but disables when the Bluetooth is connected to a headset? The other day I was using my jawbone and it kept switching from speaker to the jawbone.

I will take a look at it, sounds like a good idea...
Note to myself:
- Disabling the speaker switch if headset is connected (bluetootht and wired)
- proximity monitoring should be handled in a proper service that starts with the accept broadcast of the call and ends itself after the end call broadcast
- grabbing it upsodedown (based on G senseor) switch microphone on and off (as a second option in app)
I'm running into a couple problems with the app on my Nexus CM6.
It is functioning properly except for the screen and speaker button. I called myself from Gmail and answered like normal with the phone up to my ear, working so far, then I took the phone away from my head and the screen came on and switched to speaker perfectly, but after that if you put the phone back up to your face the screen doesn't turn off and the speaker button remains green (as if it were still on speaker phone).
Like I said, it switches back and forth from speaker to no speaker flawlessly, so that part is working great. Any one else experiencing this?
Also, it would be amazing if we could utilize the tilt sensor so that if you wanted to set the phone on the table, screen down, it won't switch back to in ear.

- add tilt Sensor and dont switch back if in speaker and get flipped (make this optional in settings screen)

Car mode activated by magnetic closure

So it seems that the magnetic closure on my holster flap keeps triggering car mode.
Anyone have an idea how to turn this feature off?
Since we don't have a Q&A section go to General for all your questions...

Uninstall the car app (u can use Titanium Backup Pro to do that) and use a 3rd party car app from the Market (or get a non-magnetic holster).

happened to me last night at the gym... it kept going into car mode, and finally I came to the conclusion it was the magnetic snap on the holster... I have been looking for a fix all day and have been messing with/looking for a particular setting.. might be that the car dock activates car mode when a magnet is detected within phones proximity, if thats the case, I doubt there is a way to turn it off.

Glad I found this thread because I thought I was going insane. I bought a cheap little leather holster at Five Below that has a magnetic clasp (like a Blackberry case) and My G2x was constantly going into carMode as well. I don't want freeze or remove carMode app, but I'd like to find a fix that doesn't have it pop on in my holster.
Look for apps like Dock Blocker, NoDock, Dock No-Op, etc. in the market. I am using Spider Launcher and it works reasonably well and has more uses than just avoiding Car Home.
Be wary of magnets & battery!
I have a friend who had a Droid (original), which also used the presence of a magnet to go into car mode. His battery life started going down the tubes when he got a magnetic-closure type holster for it (this was before he/we figured out what was going on).
However, he also experienced some MAJOR issues with his battery not long after. Meaning the battery would seem to do ok until about 40%, then start dropping like crazy. Juiceplotter would show it going from 20% to 5% in 30 minutes, no reporting by android in between, etc.
I didn't research it TOO much (wasn't my phone heh), but a cursory search showed some people had issues with magnetic cases and their batteries going to hell. I'm assuming that the magnet in the car dock is very weak and in just the right spot to trigger the car app, but a magnetic case (unless made FOR the G2X BY LG, so they would know about the issue and where to place the magnet) might end up having some effect on your battery. Or it might not. I'm no expert, but just check out the potential battery issues if you stick with a magnetic case.

Blackberry's have had magnetic cases for years and have been very reliable. I don't know if the magnet would have an adverse affect on the battery itself. The magnet could affect the cell phone's antenna and thus attenuate the signal so that the phone has to increase power to stay in contact with the tower. And although the battery may drain quicker because of that, it wouldn't make it a long term problem unless you consider faster power drain cause the battery to wear out quicker. Good to know and a good experiment to try with the "Battery Monitor Widget".
exact problem
read this and done a little testing. it seems the sensor is to the right of the camera (if you are looking that the phone's back vertically) or at where the hour digit is displayed on the lock screen. magnet clasps should not be a problem by theory if you don't put that part of the phone there and the magnets are relatively weak.
Strange cause I have a heavy earth magnet and went all around it and got nothing. I THOUGHT I did this on stock but it could have been cm7.
I now my blackberry uses magnets and it is actually a nice feature TO TURN THE SCREEN ON but not to launch a program.
If this is true perhaps someone can change the behavior.

[Q] Brodit Car Kit

I am looking at buying a Brodit Car Kit for my desire. Can anyone give any pros and cons who have actually used one.
I understand I may need a Proclip to suit, and does anyone know the level of charge that the thing delivers. Thanks.
I have an active Brodit Cradle. Not sure what level of charge it provides but its a well made product that was easy to install and with car home, google navigation and winamp running I lost no charge on my journey.
Thanks for that.

Just ordered one now with the appropriate Proclip for my car. Cost £51 inc postage from dsldevelopments. They had both items in stock whereas mobilefun are awaiting stock on the Proclip. Have spent the last 45 mins reading up on this v's the official htc car kit and this wins for me in that it's v highly regarded generally for a variety of phones in terms of it's build, fit and reliability and has a loyal user base unlike cheap alternatives. The official HTC kit has mixed reviews, mainly positive though but it's the sucker design that put me off... where I'm from, if you can clearly see something stuck on top of the dashboard or windscreen...it's a goner! The clip fits on the central console and is much more likely to be missed or seen as as something difficult to remove so more chance of being left alone.
Hopefully my experience will be as good as other users. Just hope it's delivered quick as both items are in stock.
I have been in touch with dsl myself and was going to use them. I may wait to see your findings.

I used dsl they were very good the only thing I can't get the brodit to do is to auto launch Car home when connected. Instead I use a locale work around.

I use Leedroid 2.4.1
The Locale settings I use are when Headphones are connected and Power source (ac/dock/car charger) is connected. (I do this as I always connect my phone to teh brodit and a line in for use with the aux in on my car)
Then the following settings are used
Brightness 100%
Car Dock Mode is Enabled and launched
Media Volume 100%
Screen Timeout Never
Volume 100%
Kit arrived on Friday morning so very quick, using standard delivery.
As for the fitting, the proclip takes seconds. The actual mount is a little fiddly to screw in, I lost one screw so had to buy more doh! Otherwise also easy fit.
It's very sturdy, the phone fits in very well, without any case of course, the swivel is very good and not loose. Fired up maps and navigation, was easy to use and just the right location for me (fitted to central console) Haven't used it for a journey yet, will see when going to work tomorrow but impressed so far.
Note : I'm running CM7 and the car home didn't launch automatically.
How do you set locales?

Oh I see...it's £6+, I'll leave it for now, will see if there is a solution as to why Car Home doesn't launch in CM7
As for the charging, yesterday had navigation running for 50mins approx and the battery which was at 31 went up to 49. However, this morning, didn't have the phone running anything just plugged in to charge at 21, after 70 mins it was at 81 So it's a v good charger.
Usage wise, the phone for navigation was in landscape mode, swivelled very solidly and was easy to use and read.
Only thing to note was because of the position I have it installed in, it obscures view of my rear window heater button but it can still be pressed and slightly obscures the radio display.
I've been using a proclip for almost a year and love it. It was the first accessory I bought (had one previously for my Diamond).
I use it only for keeping my Desire charged as I have Car Home set to auto-launch on bluetooth connect with my car. I'm currently running LeeDrOi 2.4.1 with no problems.

Well it's been a week and can only echo my previous comments that the Brodit kit + proclip are well worth a purchase. Very solid, sturdy and useable. I have RAC Traffic running most of the time which unfortunately doesn't work in landscape mode (will be sending comments!) and also use navigation in landscape mode, the swivel functon is not loose at all and the best part of the whole kit is that the charging is the same as charging on mains, if you were in the car 2 hrs approx. the phone would be fully charged. V pleased with that.
Hope my comments\experience have helped.
I can only concur with all the comments made. This is a sturdy piece of kit that does a great job.

I have the Brodit, with the cigarette lighter plug (there is also a direct connected version). Charge is around 400 m.a. so not bad! Reason to have the cigarette version is that my phone changes more often than my car - created an extra cigarette lighter connector hidden in the console (Citroen C5)
I've got the direct connect version, which is great as well.
It charges the phone at over an amp.
Although a bit tricky to connect the cables, totally worth it

[Q] Headset Issues

Im having erratic headset issues. when i have my headset plugged in and trying to listen to music in any music player program, my phone randomly starts making phone calls, it hangs up by itself and my phone makes all types of crazy beeping noises. also while headset plugged in it randomly opens up another music player, it will play for a few seconds then cut back on and back off and back on so ill have two different music players going at the same time. Its not the settings inside of either music player causing this! ie resume music when headset plugged in or vice versa... Does anyone have any idea why this happens. i have a lot of music on my sd card and need to get my headset working properly.
any help? bump
don't know what would cause that but maybe a hard reset will fix it?
thanks ill give it a try
I know people complaining of that too. THey plug in to listen to music and put phone in their pocket and all kinds of crazy sh*t happens. The head jack is like super loose and buggy or somethinn!

I'm having the same problem. My headset doesn't respond while the phone is on, but as soon as I turn it off (standby), it starts calling the last person I called and stopping/starting music.
PS: I can't wait till this phone is unlocked so we can get some roms on it and actually use it to its potential.
Double pressing the call/play button on the headset will call the last person in your call list, so maybe that is sticking somehow. Maybe see if another stock sensation headset works.

At first I thought it was sticking, but then why would it not work when the screen is on? As soon as I turn the screen off is when it starts freaking out.
I've also just noticed that there seem to be two different headset modes; if you don't push the jack all the way in, the icon in the task bar will only show headphones and the call button will not work, but if you push it all the way in, it shows a full headset with a microphone and the call button will work. I'm wondering if maybe you're jack placed somewhere between these two points.

It's the full headset icon.
Right now I'm uninstalling apps that I've recently installed/updated. Maybe it's a compatibility problem with an app.
It seems the problem is just ****ty manufacturing. Same problem with multiple headsets. Even when screen is on. It happens when the jack is bumped/twisted/moved/breathed on too hard.
Sucks. Contact HTC and get a replacement headset.

Fixed, kind of.
If your headset does this, try these steps to fix it:
1. Cut a small strip of clear packing tape.
2. Wrap the strip around the rubber part of the connector on the headphones. The tape should cover a few millimeters of the rubber part and extend out beyond the metal connector. It shouldn't touch the metal part, but surround it.
3. With an x-acto knife or box cutter cut the tape, leaving a couple millimeters extending out beyond the rubber part of the connector.
4. Fold the tape inward toward the metal connector. It should just reach the metal cylinder, without covering it. If it does cover it a little, that's fine. Just don't let it cover too much metal.
5. Wipe off any adhesive that may have gotten on the connector before you plug it in.
6. Plug it in, and hope for the best.
I've attached a pic of what it should look like after. Tell me if it works for you.
I had a similar issue, unplugging the replugging usually fixes it for me. Bit of a hassle, but oh well.

Hi there. I had the same issue with the htc headset and the one from my vibrant. Please, verify the hole in the back cover where the headset jack is supposed to be connected. Do you see a shiny bit around the circular edge (exposed aluminium)? If so, call htc so they can replace you back cover for one that doesn't have the aluminium from the back cover exposed there. When the metal from the jack gets in contact with the metal from the back cover it creates a short circuit and you get erratic behavior. A temporary fix I used was to put a small piece of tape to cover the exposed aluminium and then plugged in the jack. It worked perfectly. Hope this is helpful. Good luck, people!

I wonder if some clear nail polish on it would solve the issue...
The tape on the connector works pretty well. It's only freaked out once since I taped it.
I was thinking of the same thing (nail polish). But don't sweat it. Call htc and ask for a replacement. It won't take you more than 15 minutes and all they ask for is the S/N. It will take only like 3 or 4 days to arrive. Btw, glad I could help
I just realized I have same issues. Though I am using iPhone headset, so can't say for sure. But it's annoying. Doublepress = next track + dial last called number

[Q] Car Mode engaged when near 6ghz radio

not sure if anyone else will have noticed this, so I am curious if anyone has more information on it.
We have a DECT 6ghz baby monitor, that the other day I happened to place my G2x on top of while walking around the house. When I put my phone onto of it, suddenly the Car Mode was engaged.
I know that some phones (HD2) have an 'active car cradle' that will allow you to engage car mode automatically when docked, but I didn't think this was a feature that was built into the G2x.
Does anyone have any more information on it? I tried the same on my wifes Mytouch4G, and that didn't cause the same results.
Car Mode also activates when I put it in my belt case that has a magnetic close on the cover. I thought I found a thread where someone was sure the car holder had a magnet, and the G2x was designed to sense that magnet and activate Car Mode. Some day when I finally root my phone, I'm going to post a question (although I'll probably find it in a search of the forums) on how to NOT START Car Mode at boot, or kill Car Mode or what ever.
I have the same problem just go to the settings apps select car home and then force close it the. It won't bother you again till you restart the phone. XDA App

update, gingerbread ota disables magnetic carmode
I finally decided to let the gingerbread ota update get applied, I had been using cm7 rc1. The new ota disables the magnetic sensor ( I thought it was the radio, erroniously)
Kind of interesting that this feature is removed. Strange thing was that it had a lot to do with the distance and intensity of the magnet. No other magnet I could find would activate car mode.
Im glad I stumbled upon this thread cause I have been driving myself nuts trying to figure out how I keep starting car mode retrieving my phone from the holster.
