[Q] what's the file system? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What's the file system used in the Asus transformer with stock rom?
Ext4, fat?

I'm asking because I find the Android system works much better with ext4 than RFS with the Samsung Galaxy S.
I was wondering if the same problem exists with Asus Transformer.

ext4
rfs is a samsung fav.

any idea what the Asus Transformer uses?

like really
ext4
RFS is more samsungs thing

oh, ic, thanks for the clarification.
you first post read "ext4 rfs is a samsung fav..." without any paragraphs or extra spaces so it was confusing. lol

CWM Ext3/4 support - Explanation please

Can someone please, in layman's terms, explain what ext3/4 is? Also, in what scenarios is the CWM with ext4 support needed?

Ext3/4 are different file systems... Our phone is "native" ext3... Ext4 is a little better...(faster/easier to work with?) Im not totaly sure... I know there filing systems but not much difference in performance
But the new nvflash ext4 is so we can make backups with the ext4 kernels that are out (possibly new roms)

Ahhh, makes sense now. I'm glad I didn't flash an ext4 kernel/rom and get it setup the way I want it and try a backup. that would have sucked. awesome, thanks again.
Yeah I believe EXT4 is faster at read/write operations which should provide better performance for our little blazing beasts, and is also the latest of the EXT file system type. Newer is always better, right?

[Q] a few questions about EXT4

hi, so i was looking at Leedroid ROM and noticed in the OP it says that you can flash an optional file that will delete everything and format to ext4... this raised a few questions for me since I came from Nexus S.... is the stock sensation formatted in ext3 or 4? Also, don't most of the custom roms upgrade to ext4 or no? and do i have to use this file in the OP of Leedroid's ROM to format the whole system to ext4 before flashing an ext4 rom? I already asked many times in the dev section and nobody would help me out so if someone can help clear this up for me I would appreciate it... thanks!

I wish I could chime in more for you but I do know that when flashing LeeDROID it converts to ext4 so I would guess that it isn't that way to start.
From Terminal Emulator, you can type in "mount" without the quotes and it'll tell you which file system is used in each "mount" (analogous to partition, if you're a windows user).
I just did it on my stock sensation 4G (TMOUS) and it's mostly, if not all, EXT4 already. Unless I'm reading it wrong.
thanks for the response guys!

ICE DS v 4.2 ICS 4.0.4 Sense 3.6 with ext3

hello everybody!
I tried to find an answer on this on the ROMs thread but I couldnt so here it is;
Can I use ICE DS v 4.2 with ext3 only? If so, can I disable afterwards ext4 support?
Thanks
why wouldnt you use ext4? it's an advantage thou. but if you dont want to use ICE DS in future, just revert to ext3 by using 4EXT Recovery.
For the amount of internal memory that our devices have there is no matter whether you use ext3 or ext4. Also the install script of the ROM itself will format the partitions as ext4 upon flashing so there is not much choise actually If you like to go back to ext3 after flashing 4EXT Recovery can do this without losing any data

Thanks for the quick replies..
When I used a stock ROM with a rooted Desire, I remember discussions about the disadvantages of ext4.
The idea as I understood, was that ext4 was more likely to create filesystem corruption in case of an abnormal shutdown of the phone, eg battery removal, expecially if it used to extend phone memory to the sd card via proper partitioning.
It is exactly the opposite. The ext4 file management will prevent corruption in case that a read/write process gets interrupted by a battery pull or similar. Search Google for ext4 there are all the benefits described on a Wikipedia article.

This.
ext4 wouldn't exist, or developed if ext3 is better.

[Q] microSD format?

Hi
I have a 32 Gb class 4 microsd card and I want to have the ability to get files greater than 4 gb there (need bigger images for LinuxOnAndroid).
Have checked that the kernel is compiled with support for ext2 ("cat /proc/filesystems" shows ext2) but when I plug in sdcard in ext2 or even a flash drive with ext2 through USB-OTG it says that the fs is not recognized.
Probably, something should be done with fstab or I should compile and copy some kernel modules? In kernel config ext2 seems to be compiled to kernel so should be no need for modules
What can I do?
Thanks
Yess, I have the same problem. Devs, people, please create a kernel for N8000/N8010/N8013 and other Galaxy Note 10.1 that will be able to mount such filesystems and there are OTG cable issues with the firmware. Please include all of these fixes in one kernel. I want to see something like the Siyah Kernel which was made for SGS2 and SGS3
Thanks
Some success
Got the sdcard mounted with
mount -o rw -t ext2 /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 /mnt/extSdCard
but in this way the note still says it has no sdcard. At least i can read it with filemanagers
I'm not sure if you can load updates that are out, but both OTAs in the US fixed exFat support on the 8013 Note 10.1.

I want ext2, not exFAT as my primary system is Ubuntu and moreover Android is more like Linux than some Microsoft stuff
My N8000 has support for exFAT as sdcard fs, but why not ext2?
Why not go for EXT4 instead of EXT2?
There hasn't been much need for this at the moment, if you ask a dev nicely they might look into it. I'd probably look into either the sgs3 forum, note /note 2 or sgs2 forums for devs who have done this on other devices...

ext4 has journaling enabled... anyway I don't understand how ext4 will work when ext2 can't in this situation.
Have been searching the whole morning and found a lot of threads there. All unsuccesfull or unexpectedly ending

Ext4 is a faster file system tha stock so yes.
Now if you also removed the ext4 journal. (Not safe and unrecommended , because without the journal, if you lost power while writing something, your OS would not be able to continue the writing operations and would leave you with corrupted and unuseable files)
So yes, this mod is legit.
Its just like voodoo lagfix. (ext4 mod)

but does it work on JB and kitkat on any android phone?
I would figure that as long as your kernel supports ext4 and you manage to convert your file system to ext4 then its possible.
But you should give your device name first, because the ext4 file system isn't meant for some devices. (Specifically the optimus v, we are stuck with yaffs2 because it destroys our chip)
Then go ask a dev in the forum for your device if it will work.
