App Icon Pics fill up Gallery - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings All,
Just a quick question. I've noticed recently (well really about a couple weeks now) that my gallery is filled with individual folders with single icons of the apps I have downloaded. Thus when I open up the gallery I have to scroll for what seems like forever just to find a folder with my pics.
This is annoying because I have a number of apps on my phone. I've found my self searching for folders of pics that were in between these single icon folder that I zoomed past thinking they were organized in some logical order.
I'm wondering if this is because I have moved a number of apps to my sd card? How can I fix this?
P.S. I've attached a pic of my gallery and these nuisance icons.

go into the folder that icon is in and create a new file named ".nomedia" (without quotes)

Thanks zephiK.
Can you tell me how to figure out what folder the icons are in? I've tried using Astro File Manger with no luck because I don't really now where to look.

[Q] Possible to filter Samsung Gallery?

Is it possible to filter the pictures which appear in the Samsung Gallery on the DC? Each time I start it up it is filled with TONS of pictures I do not want, including Google map fragments as well as album covers from my music files...pretty much making the display a mess.
I looked in Settings > Applications > Manage applications as well as Menu in the gallery and did not see any options...
All I want to see are my pictures in "My Pictures" folder on my SD card as well as the camera (DCIM folder if I must)!
Thanks!
Try QuickPic, free from the market.
You can select which folders it loads from, and it loads much faster due to a cache. Also it displays pics in higher resolution, so you can zoom in.
Much better than stock gallery.
Or go into each folder of the images you don't want to see with a file browser and create a ".nomedia" file - sans quotation marks.
Definitely try Quickpic. It is great.

Thanks, I'll give it a try. If I put it in a folder such as "My Music", will it block all of my album subfolders underneath? If not, Quickpic here I come!
Thanks everyone!!!

I believe it does. What I think happens is it stops searching the contents of that folder, including subfolders, once it sees the file.
If you have music in there too, they might be blocked from showing up in a media player.

You can do the show hide folders via Menu > Show and Hide and then select what you want.
Otherwise, you might find an app like QuickPic better.

You can also use a file explorer such as ES File Explorer or Astro File Manager to creat a folder and place the specific pictures you want in it. The Gallery app will automatically find the folder and show it with your other picture folders.
I'm not too sure but I believe quickpic (download from market, it's free) can create folders and move pics. Plus it's a good gallery replacement. Fast and you can sort folders by name or date and also sort the photos in the folders the same.

Just as T-Macgnolia suggested, the ES File Manager (free app) in Google Play does it for you. And then in Gallery you can Show/Hide the folders you want.

[Q] Pictures are gone!?!?!?!

So here is the deal. Any old or saved picture will not show up as a gallery in any gallery app. no thumbnails nothing. if you go to the file manager, the picture is there, you may open it up and view it in the gallery app. but as soon as you exit that view, the photo will not show up in the gallery app. If you take a picture, only that picture will show up in the gallery, thumbnail and all. all old pictures are still there, but no thumbnail. Anybody got any ideas?

Your media store might be outdated.
Try forcing the mediascanner to run by using an app from the play store. There are tons of them
sent from my amazingly awesome OnePlus One with Stereo Mod
Don't forget to hit thanks!
Also check if there's a file called ".nomedia" that stops the mediascanner from scanning that folder. If it's there just delete it.

Thank you very much.. You saved my life. There were tons of unsaved pics of my 2 month old son. I was scared to death.
How did the .nomedia file get created in the first place?
Thank you
Regards
Raghu
Glad I could help. I wouldn't really know why that file got created, perhaps some kind of bug or glitch.
From where to find .nomedia file brother. Still my photos are not getting open. Please tell me in which folder it is there. Thank a ton

Why does the camera roll show ALL images (Camera, WhatsApp, Screenshots etc.)?

Hey guys,
Since a couple of days I've start to notice this little 'problem' on my Samsung Galaxy S7 (Android 7.0). For some reason the camera roll is showing ALL my images (and videos) instead of just the pictures that I have taken with my phone. So, WhatsApp images/videos, screenshots, downloaded images, it's all there.
Now, I've read alot about the .nomedia 'solution' to hide/excluse certain albums from showing up in the Gallery, but I don't want that. I like my WhatsApp images/videos etc. being shown in the Gallery application, I just don't want to see them in/on my camera roll.
So, the Gallery application is working just fine, and everything is stored in (pre-located) albums ('Camera', 'Screenshots', 'Twitter' etc.). I've looked at the settings in the Gallery app, but couldn't find anything relevant that would likely be causing this problem. Same goes for the Camera application.
What can be relevant is that I am storing the pictures taken by the Camera on a SD-card.
So, I was wondering if someone could help me. Is this problem related to Nougat? My phone isn't rooted, by the way.
Many thanks in advance! ?
Same problem here... Really annoying
What do you mean by "Camera Roll"?
If you open the "Album" section of the gallery, are you saying ALL images are showing up in the "Camera" album folder? Rather than their individual folders?
Obviously if you choose the "Pictures" tab, it will show all images on the device on the same screen
The "Albums" tab should be showing them in individual folders though

With "Camera Roll" I mean the pictures that can be accessed through the Camera App - when you open the Camera App it's the circular icon placed on the bottom right of the screen (right next to the shutter/camera button).
Same problem here. When I try to look photos from camera app, it shows all photos, not just camera roll like it should

The camera roll accessed from the camera app just opens the "Pictures" tab of the gallery app, which contains every image on the phone that does not contain a .nomedia file in it's folder
Samsung would have to patch the camera app to open just the "Camera" album folder I assume
But generally you would only use that button in the camera app to view the last few shots you just took, if you want to view a specific folder, open the gallery Albums tab

Unlikely going to have the same effect crying here, as crying to the people who can do something about it would
Could always flash back to MM if it's affecting you that badly
Personally when I want to look at some photos on my phone, I open the gallery app, not the camera app, I use that for taking the photos...
Thanks for all the help and responses, guys! I guess I'll just have to get used to it. Maybe Samsung will patch this in the future. Who knows.
That's a pretty dumb reply, to be honest. It's a camera app. Why would you want to review every downloaded or received image through the camera app? Sure, why don't I just jump off a bridge if I don't like it? It's a ****ty function and I can't blame people for asking if there's a fix. You can keep your "eat it or die" answers to yourself if you don't fancy being helpful.
I guess the question is:
why is the gallery opened when one opens the camera in whatsapp seeing that line of pictures is very irritating.(S5 mini)
Any solution?
This is killing me. Such a silly system by Samsung.

If you don't want your WhatsApp (or any other App for that matter) images to be shown between the rest of your Gallery images, you have to install and use a File Manager, navigate to the WhatsApp images folder and 'hide' this folder. Normally you can also hide a folder by creating a new file in that folder named ' .nomedia' like noted by Detection. The WhatsApp images folder is normally located at: 'Internal Storage' (or sdcard) > 'WhatsApp' > 'Media' > 'WhatsApp Images'. This way the gallery won't show your WhatsApp images anymore but WhatsApp will still show his own images. I hope I am correct with this info and this helps some of you.
Hi guys,
I asked to add this option (open last media in camera folder when gallery is called from camera app) in this camera mod app. Maybe you could increase the importance/priority of the request showing your interest on this feature in the mod post.
I'm trying the @martin.delbi method: should be a good workaround, but you should do it for all the folders with media you have in your storage/sd without .nomedia file that you do not want to show in Gallery.
I've tried this solution and realized it's not what I actually want since other apps don't even see those folders too. How do I undo it? I've deleted the .nomedia files I created and I still can't see the album. Thanks
unable to view watsapp status in myfile folder in samsung j7 max.
kindly help to resolve the problem

I totally agree. It's ridiculous that every photo or media file is right there after you take a picture, if you downloaded something or if someone sent you something in a text or you have something risque in a totally different directory on an SD card and it's dated just before that photo, BOOM! It's right there for your mom to see next to the family pics.
Can you change the default viewer that gets activated from the camera app?
Is there another camera app that does not have this problem?
The "camera roll" or the the icon from the camera app should ONLY show recent pictures in the DCIM/camera directory. PERIOD.

You can go into Gallery, go to Albums Tab, touch the three dots, there's a Hide or Unhide Albums. You can hide most albums, except for a few including Camera, Screenshots, Downloads, and Pictures (at least on my phone). The newest picture still seems to come up in the camera circle preview pane, and shows up for a second when you click the gallery circle from the camera app, but if it's in a hidden directory disappears. If you latest media file is in the camera directory, you don't have this problem.

Xperia Album App completely messed up after Oreo Update...

Hi guys, here's the deal:
After the Oreo update the Album App in the XZ Premium is now completely messed up. Here's how.
Before the Update, I had several hidden folders which I hid with a dot ( .foldername ) from the Album. I used to remove the Dot to make the folders appear again, and hid them again by adding the Dot. Everything worked fine, no problems at all.
After the Oreo Update:
I was like, hey wanna check out the Album and see all images. So I went to remove the Dots from the folders. BAM! They don't appear in the Album! WTF??? WHY??? And worse, they Also do not appear in Google's own Photos App. It's almost like the folders are registered as permanently hidden!!!
----------- Solution?
Well, with Google's own folder application called "Files", I just created new folders and just moved all contents from the hidden files to the new folders and then deleted the old still hidden files.
Now, the images appear, and all seems ok... Until I went, "ok, time to hide these folders again!". And guess what?
Adding a Dot doesn't hide these folders anymore. They appear on the Album App (Gallery App) with a Dot in front of their name. Yes, I can't hide any folders anymore.
wtf??
---------- Another question, completely unrelated...
Again on the Xperia Album App, I Can't move any content under "Xperia Camera" to another Folder. There are no "Move to" Options... Apparently the Move option is only available under the "Folders" menu on the Album app. That's a drag cause now I have the move them from the "Files" App which doesn't always give previews... xD
---------- IF any of you have a solution, well, tnx!
I think it's an oreo thing. I have wallpapers in a certain folder also named ".wallpapers" and they appeared in the album app, as well as the Facebook app. I quickly solved this just by adding a .nomedia file in the folder.
#1 - That might have something to do with the background job, that triggers a media rescan. Maybe Sony or google changed the way, android detects a change and thats the reason. You could trigger that manually by deleting the app-data of media-storage in settings->apps.
#2 That has been this way for a long time now and hasn't changed in the near past... I don't like that behaviour, too!
.nomedia works ok except on Viber images. The most anoying thing is when i see viber received imgs in album, and i cant hide them, need to delete them always...
