[Q] How many tabs can you have open? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so how many websites can you have open in the browser before things start to become too laggy?

Well 16 tabs seems to be the Max. It depends on how many of them have flash running. I normally have about 4 tabs running and it handles them fine.

thanks, how many can you have open if flash is disabled?

16... but it only shows 5 along the top of the screen at once, you have to scroll left/right to see the rest. That's why I think 4 tabs is a decent amount.

I've had 23 open with Opera Mobile 11 on a Gtablet which has half the ram. Opera Mobile appears to have Hardware acceleration for smooth scrolling too. Dolphin browser HD is supposed to have Hardware Acceleration on Honeycomb as well.

it isn't a system limitation, it's the browser which only allows 16 tabs

If the answer is 2 or more, it's got the Xoom beat. xD

[APP] Is there a need for Dolphin Browser anymore?

I downloaded dolphin browser HD from the market last night to give it a try. I wanted to see if it would make the browsing even smoother and faster than it already is on frf91, or run flash better or something. I don't notice anything different. I understand that it has a lot of great features like gestures, tabs, add ons that the regular browser doesn't. But as far as just the performance of page loading or scrolling or anything, do you guys see any difference? What do you like about it?
Lol you answered it in your own post.. It's about the extra features it has
Right I was just wondering if people saw a performance increase in certain types of pages or something. Or if anyone was noticing speed increases.
I don't see any improvements whatsoever with speed. For Dolphin, I have a bunch of gestures set up that makes my lift a lot easier by having a shortcut to "select text".
I guess the only other thing that helps is the convenient access to wipe history and cache. You can also set it to private browsing mode so it never remembers history.
I like being able to exit/close the browser
I have noticed a few features that make Dolphin browser great.
First is the UAs (user agent settings) can be set to desktop client always. I hate going to about:debug every single time on the N1 stock browser. The MT3GS has a stock browser with UAs options in the stock settings. Not having that, after already having it in a stock browser is just annoying.
Downloading is much more efficient with Dolphin for me. I have been able to get everything posted on xda through rapidshare and others. If I am about to download something on my computer, I chrome to phone the link, and use dolphin to download it and astro to move it to the root.
Text clarity is much better on Dolphin. This was especially noticeable when reading text sites, like the news.
The flash player is on Demand, which is annoying when your first testing it out, but I have grown to love that feature. Especially when a lot of sites are fattened up with flash advertisements and useless widgets all over the place. News sites are the worst of all. Even when your in an EDGE only zone a news story should load fine, but an animated advertisement loading in the middle of the page will slow you down.
Downside. I can't seem to establish a secure connection when attempting to connect to a website using verisign to verify the secure connection. I don't know if it is the secure connection that isn't working or the verification? I emailed Dolphin, maybe they will tell me.
I use Dolphin primarily, but the great thing about Android is that you can run both of them, or either of them whenever you please. Getting the best of both worlds.
What I like the most is the simple refresh and stop button next to the address bar
I just wish it had a better theme...the theme tries to be too flashy and the additional themes are equally as gaudy...a simple stock browser theme (same tabs and buttons and whatnot but with the stock android theme styling) would be great...oh well.
Just so I know, dolphin browser uses the default webkit browser core, correct? And it just basically is like the default browser with different settings, UI, and "skin" overtop of the default browser.

Only for downloading files that Dolphin Browser seems to not want to download...
Skyfire 2.1 has improved alot. Its fast, the multi touch is better than it was with 2.0, and its flash player works much better than before. I use this when browsing casually (not logging in anywhere.) Love to watch worldstarhiphop videos with it cause flash 10.1 performance sucks on that site.

i use xscope. although i like that dolphin has ability to sync bookmarks
Nope, stopped using Dolphin HD for a couple reasons:
1) It has tabs, which is awesome, but it's a little too complicated to reach them compared to the old dolphin. I liked being able to swipe down to bring down the bar.
2) It's buggy as hell. I've uninstalled and reinstalled it about three times now. Sometimes it doesn't register my clicks, sometimes it brings about the crazy screen problem, and sometimes it just doesn't try to load my pages.
I just wish the stock android browser had tabs implemented.
Xscope has 0 bugs and its fast
The ability for fullscreen mode. That's most important to me as I don't want the notification bar to waste space and to prevent further lcd screen burn in for my N1.
Although that feature is broken in the recent version but a fix is coming.

I do. Downloaded X-Scope and Dolphin the same day. There was something Dolphin did that I did not like, but can't remember what it was. But it was often enough it annoyed me. Never had an issue with X-Scope
Love xscope lite. Looks great, great features. many people don't know this but you can set up Flash to run automatically vs. "on demand"
I wasn't sure if all the browser improvements on 2.2 were just for the stock browser but doesn't seem anyone has noticed a difference in speed between stock and alternatives.

Not sure what you mean by text reflow, but I set it to "wide" in one of the settings and it made the xda forums look exactly the same as dolphin/stock browser.

browser lag when scolling and screen accuracy

Anyway to fix these by ediiting the prop build and anyway to adjust the red level in the screen.
These are killing me and driving me nuts!
browser lag is most likely Flash 10.1, install the latest flash or do what I did. Change flash to On-Demand in plugin settings for browser.
and I'm sure there is screen changing things you can do, but I don't do them so can't help ya.
It's not browser lag with flash its in scrolling text btw I have flash 10.2

The page moves quicker if you just move your thumb top to bottom then if you try to fling the page that's what I'm talking about(

I was just coming here to post about the browser lag. Noticeable lag, BTW.
I went into the T-Mobile store earlier today, factory reset the display G2X (I always do that now, since people like to say "phone prolly was runnign 20 apps from all the other people that played with it") and put Flash to On-Demand. Go to WMPowerUser.com (there are MANY others where this happens), open a blog post and scroll. It's choppy as ****. The Vibrant has the exact same issues (slightly worse). It happens on tons of sites, and I don't think Flash has anything to do with it.
I don't know what the issue is, but I'm about to start looking at the HTML coming to the browser (user agent spoofing on a desktop) to see if it is choking on on some specific elements.
I also noticed the data speeds were simply terrible, slower than my Vibrant (had both my Vibrant and HD7 on me).
Google needs to realize that the overall user experience matters more than how many milliseconds advantage your browser engine has over the competition...

Because there are applications/features that tie into the stock browser and using a third party browser just breaks the overall cohesiveness of the user experience.
I've never heard of XScope and didn't think Miren still existed, though, so thanks for that info.
Opera Mobile 11 is better than both of them, and supports Flash...
BOTH browsers are great. MIREN has an option to adjust brightness within the browser which I like to use at night. Xscope has a great developer and has nice features as well. Try both than pick one and un-install the other. Than when an app requires stock browser you will be prompt to select which browser you want to use as default, choose miren or xscope and its that easy!

The Samsung stock browser has independent browser controls, and does stuff like chrome to phone work with those third party browsers?
I already use opera as a secondary. The others are useless to me.
The constant pops to choose an app front every app with links is county. I like to avoid that situation.

[Q] Is anyone getting operating lag?

The OS seems to be lagging. It could be the hardware or maybe its the infancy stages of Honeycomb, but not a single thing on the TF is smooth.
-Switching home screens lags
-Playing Angry Birds lags
-Window animations lag
[Q] Is anyone else getting these problems?
It kind of hinders the experience, and for industry leading specs, the performance is quite poor.
The only lag I've noticed so far is with the keyboard input on web pages.

I experienced this a few days after I got my tablet. It ended up being an app/widget I had installed off of the market called weather3d. As soon as I tracked the problem down and uninstalled the app, it was smooth again. Kind of scary how much a wonky/non honeycomb tested app can destroy the performance of your device.

Unfortunately, it was lagging out of the box. I was showing it off to my sister and she's like "what are you trying to show me, the sketchy transitions?"
Maybe its all the widgets? I have all the stock ones including calendar, youtube, android market, and browser widgets
Mine is laggy too especially during home screen transitions using the HC launcher. It is noticeable especially if you are coming from an iPad. I have read that 3.1 fixes these problems and transitions are silky smooth with no lag. I'm currently using Launcher Pro with 1 home screen since I don't use widgets and I like to keep all my apps on one screen. This seems to save on RAM and makes app switching smoother.

Like any techsupport would ask:
what have u loaded on-the-job tablet? And don't say nothing because everyone loads at least one thing on a new tablet.
Have u tried to remove all installed apps (and Flash-bet u installed that)?
Have u rooted it yet?
Have u tried to root it yet?
Have u attempted/completed any firmware upgrades?
Are u using a dock?
Have u tried it without the dock?
Have u tried a hard reboot (hold power button for 12-15 secs?
i get panel transition lags when i set some live wallpapers
stock, no root, with latest firmware
If u want no lag and and want to use as many widgets with out system lagging do this
1 download ADW ex in market
2 go to adw setting and go to general behavior, animations and effects, transition effect and select *Curve ( I've tryed all pf them and some reason curve has the best fluid swiping)
4 make sure wallpaper scrolling is disabled
5 set desktop bounce to 15
6 set scrolling to 230
This is my way of a lag free life.
Also turn off alm the gestures there not needed
Ill do a video of before and after soon
You are correct...that really made my home screens fly!

-First thing out of the box: lag from scrolling. Then got flash, still lagging
-then got Angry Birds
-then got other android apps
-Not rooted, haven't tried
-just got notice of available firmware update today, will do after battery charges past 50
-No dock
-hard reboot did help a touch
I think I will try to restore it factory settings first, then runnig the firware upgrade, then getting flash. Will post results
Good News! I restored the tablet to factory settings and actually restored it from backup after that. Here is what I have noticed:
-The tablet is working much faster now, with no appreciable lag. Still some tiny amounts here and there but totally forgivable
-The preloaded music (4 songs) was gone. I think this means that before the ship the tablet they preload it with random software. So now its all gone, and whatever was causing the slow down before is gone now as well.
-I restored from back up so I have all my apps back as well as flash and it works perfect
-Also, the Asus keyboard no longer lags! Which is great because I like it better than the Android one. So if anyone wants to use the Asus keyboard without lag, just reset your tablet to factory settings.
Thanks for all the help everyone, I will still try Cowballz69 idea to speed it up even more

Ya somebody already posted this last night in this same forum. Anyway it does rock, I immediately uninstalled DolphinHD after trying this, it's pretty dang quick and like the look and feel of it.
Scrolling is still jittery like original dolphin hd compared to default, I hope they activate graphic acceleration on next update
How do you use gesture? The Dolphin HD has the button at the lower left corner you touch to put it in gesture mode. Can't find that anywhere on the Dolphin for tab
I like the interface more than HD but getting some FCs on some addons (xmarks)

I'm using it now and like the way it works.
Youtube speed test shows 30fps, scrolling could be better (slow redraws), there are a few issues when selecting text.
To use gestures press the "triangle in a circle" icon located on the top right and then draw your gesture.
Been using this since yest also... got rid of Dol HD as well. like the feel and speed is not bad. I am a big fan of the stock browser but this could be a good replacement.
accel would be a +.
took me a while to find the gesture button also. I actually think the top right is the best place for it. I think the swipe left and rt with the bk mrk menu coming out on top and a quick tap to get rid of is so much better than sliding the screen over

It's nice, fast and clean. Scrolling isn't too bad. But I still notice keyboard lag, less than on the other 2 browsers I have (stock and Dolphin HD) but it's still there.
Tested flash on yahoo finance, which is an interactive applet I use. It's *fast*
I tried this last night and wasn't too impressed. It crashed on the first launch. Scrolling is not at all smooth like the default browser.
I really like that it automatically imports my bookmarks... that is really intelligent... however, it doesn't maintain the folder structure of the bookmarks, so they end up in one big mess, which kind of makes the auto import a moot point, since a person would have to organize them anyway.
I guess a person could always say "it's a beta"... which would be true... but I can't really see any advantage of this over the stock browser. Just my opinion.
Just tried it right now and the load time is not as fast as Opera Moblie. There is some lag when typing compare to Opera. Overall, for me much better then Dolphin HD. Wish Opera had the font sizes as Dolphin and Default browser. Opera Moblie with bigger font sizes =
Just tried it with youtube on 720p, it runs really well from the browser.
Is there a quick way of getting "history" other than through settings. Having to keep hitting the back button is a bit of a pain.
So is there anything interesting this does that the Stock browser doesn't? It sounds like it's not as smooth as stock.

Right now - not really. There was adblocker plugin but they removed it. Dolphin uses stock browser's ability to view pages anyway (it doesn't have it's own rendering engine). I like the interface of it better than of stock though.

Best Browser?

So far I've used a whole bunch of browsers:
Stock Honeycomb
Dolphin HD
Dolphin Tab
Firefox
That browser that starts with M... max something... MX something...
Opera,
and probably some others.
There are pros and cons with them all, and I'm wondering about people's opinions on them.
Here's what I think:
Stock: nice, of course, cause it's stock. Doesn't allow addons, it seems, though. Pretty zippy. The "full screen mode" that has the menu options when you slide your thumb onto the screen on either side is very very cool.
Dolphin HD: I can see why people like it, but I don't like it much myself. Clearly it's not optimized for tablets, which is why I started using Dolphin Tab...
Dolphin Tab: is clearly in beta. Works ok, and has addons, but this doesn't include adblock. Sad.
Firefox: I'm liking it. Definitely needs polish, and the way tabs work is pretty rough, but very nice. Doesn't have built-in user agent switcher, but an addon fixes that. And it has adblock! Yes! This makes it very very good in my eyes. Seems a bit heavy, though, kinda like Firefox on PC.
That M browser thingy: works well, definitely optimized for tablets, but not really my style, and has some rendering issues (it seems to me).
Opera: Very, very, very good. However, not optimized for Tablets. Which is too bad. It has no addons, so no adblock, and no user agent switcher, so all websites give me mobile versions. Very zippy, everything renders well, but Facebook is a little weird.
Actually, I've noticed that Facebook renders best in Firefox, for some reason.

Maxthon Browser.
Iv'e tried them all and i prefer the Maxthon tablet version over all other browsers available.
No rendering issues here.
I love the stock one.
BTW Opera does have agent switcher. Maybe you are trying opera mini? Try Opera mobile, it's a good browser.
Regards.
I've found all of the browsers to be laggy except Opera mobile. You can change the User Agent and you can also block ads using the url filter feature. The major drawback I find with it is that it doesn't have a page down and is scroll only. Almost every other browser allows me to hit the space bar or page down on the dock to advance a page.
I really want to like Firefox for the add ons but I just found it to be to slow to load.
I'm a huge Dolphin fan and have been using it on my phone forever but I found it just does not scroll smoothly at all on my TF.
The slide-out navigation controls make the default browser best, in my opinion. Give them a try - it allows for quick navigation and a more viewable browsing area without being cluttered by the menu bar.
Wow, thanks, Jacorso. I was dumb and using Opera Mini. Derp.
And for those suggesting stock, I like stock as well, too. The slide-in controls are very very neat. I'll be switching between stock and opera mobile, it seems.
i like skyfire and dolphin tab the most just because how fast they are.
I just stick with the stock one since most of the others are just wrappers over it anyway and Firefox is horribly bloated.
i like the stock browser regarding its handling and the look...unfortunately it's really slow and sometimes not reacting to touch...
for now i am quite satisfied with dolphin tab. it is pretty fast and working so far...though i wonder, why there is still no really working browser for tabs by now? it's not like android tabs were available since last week...
Dolphin for Pad and Maxthon for Pad are the only ones other than Stock that I use.
I've just tried maxthon for tablet but I went back immediately to opera mobile... it seems laggy and scrolling is not smooth like in opera... i wish opera had gestures to manage tabs...
I have been using Opera for 4-5 months & have been happy. Not that it doesn't have a few issues but nothing g compared to the stock browser. There is no lag while typing. The XDA search box actually works. These were a couple issues with the stock browser that I couldn't overcome.
im using opera mini, does anyone know how to change mobile facebook to normal facebook like in computer..
Sorry for English.
I like Dolphin HD
I like Dolphin HD
I use Opera and I haven't problem.
Stock, and when ICS comes and is even faster, it will still be the case.
Opera doesn't fully comply with web standards so 5% appear very strange on the tablet.

I use opera since 2 weeks. Im happy with it. Runs very fast and stable.
Stock browser is always the best
i dunno, i use maxthon in combo with stock...
i prefer maxthon tablet version 1.5 (the latest) as it works very nice and fast, but some times it bugs on some downloads o0, and thus i combine it with stock
browser
im a fan of the stock browser however i cant figure out how to set my homepage??
