Can I stop VZW Backup Assistant? - Thunderbolt General

I had forgotten how annoying this feature was with a rooted INC, but now the VZW guy set this up on my new phone...We have google to back up our contacts, we don't need VZW doing it too, let alone daily....Can I turn this off?

Check in Menu > Settings > Account & sync

You can always wipe the phone... then skip through the VZ backup at setup... If you're going to root you'll end up wiping anyways... I always skip through that because like you said... Google already backs up what I need so why do I need VZW doing it as well?

yeah, just skip thru the VZW backup assistant screen during initial setup. if you want to prevent it from running in the background, freeze it with titanium backup or bloat freezer

you can also freeze it with titanium backup

As I read this, I also want to know if I can remove this backup assistant? Seems like a waste since Google already backs up your contacts to your gmail account.
On a related note, is this service from Verizon free?

Yeah it's free. And if you're rooted you can remove it. It's not even in Das BAMF which is nice. There is no use for it unless you're coming from a non-android phone and your contacts are saved with Verizon and you want to restore them. But after that you'd have no reason to use it.

you can proly remove it without adverse effects, but i froze it just in case i needed it later. it's a good idea to freeze apps before uninstalling completely. that way you still have access to them if necessary, which is much quicker & easier than reflashing a rom
as far as i know, it is a free service. however, verizon is notorious for adding bogus charges to your monthly bill. so if you choose to use the service, keep an eye on your bill

It is free if you have an account on the VZW website, otherwise I think it's $2.99 a month.

If your rooted, delete it. Remove both apk's from the /system/app folder. First thing I do. Absolutely no need for it.

Only perk I see to it is Google never backs all my contacts up. Don't know why, so I still use backup assistant.

Make sure the drop arrow on the top when you add a contact is set to Google. It is set to phone by default. After you set it the contacts that are added with sync with Google.

Call T-Mobile Technical support explaining the situation and have them transfer you to Tier 2 Techs. (When you call T-Mobile Tech support the first to answer is Tier 1 or something, don't seemed to know much if they can't help they transfered you to what I call Tier 2)

VZW backup assist apk????

I download the theor3ginger Rom . Need to get VZW backup assist so I can download my contacts....

If you have a google account set up, all you have to do is turn on backup my data and then once you are installed with a new ROM, it will restore. Also if you already have backup assist, you can sign in online and transfer to your google account, but I believe you can download it from the market.
Would like to install VZW backup assist to download contacts and back them up to Google

I'm confused...
If your contacts are already backed up using back up assistant then just go to Verizon website and export them into a .csv
Then just import into your gmail account.
Doesn't Google already backup your contacts if you are already using a Google smart phone? I could never figure out why I had VZW Backup Assnt. on here. Glad I finally rooted and got rid of alot of junk.
Idk about you guys but the way android is set up is that you can choose where to save your contacts. Some will sync to google, some will sync to active sync, etc. However, they don't sync with one another. It really sucks because all your contacts are potentially scattered across all these servers (it can also be stored on phone only with VZW Backup). I think this is where the OP has problems with.
****************************************************************
What I did was exporting ALL of my contacts to a file. Go to google.com/contacts. Import, remove duplicates, and there you go, your life belongs to the googlian overlord.

google only backs up if the contact is set up as a "google contact" when created. When you click to create a new contact, the default is to save to the phone only, you have to change the drop-down to google every time. If you do that, it will save it to gmail contacts.
I've looked everywhere for it.
I had to backup the app and then send the backup to the phone I needed it for.
It's a nice way of sharing some paid apps with friends.
*hinthint* Haha.

Best way to backup contacts?

First, I did use the search feature, but couldn't find anything specific to the Inspire. If this already exists, please feel free to link to it/close this thread. Thanks!
So, I can't seem to effectively back up my contacts. Titanium Backup doesn't do it, and I thought they were synced via Google. Not to mention I've had the same SIM card for YEARS and all my contacts have always been on there. Now, since I rooted my phone and started flashing custom ROMS, they have disappeared. Now I am without my 400+ contacts database, which I need.. So my question is, what is the best way to back up contacts, and is there any way to recover the ones I had?
Thanks in advance!
As long as you didn't choose not to sync with Google before you flashed, they are backed up. Most likely the problem you are having is getting them to import. Try going to Settings>Accounts and Sync> and manually sync your Google account.

I rip my employer a little I guess and store ALL my contacts to MS Exchange for several years now with nary a hiccup...that said since I've been on Android, Google does a fine job too. ... I think my free Sugar Sync account probably has them too...with this phone I have given up storing any contacts at all on the SIM card...because I have gone through what you are when simply switching phones or have phones stolen/lost in the past...but yeah make sure at least Google is backing them up...
It all depends on where you have chosen to save your contacts. If to phone then they may be lost forever. If to sim then simply import them back to your phone. If to Google account then as said above just re-sync.
When thinking about flashing rom's the first thing that you should do is make sure all contacts are backed up. Best choice is with Google. That way everytime you wipe data you can boot up your phone sync with Google and BOOM! They are there. Works a treat. Cheers.

Thanks guys. I've had them backed up to Google before, and even restored them before, but it doesn't seem to be working. I just flashed the VU ROM after having been using the RCMix3D ROM for my Inspire, so I'll post the question on their page and see if it's a known issue with the ROM or anything.
Good luck.

I have been on a captivate and now the inspire. Flashed upteen different roms and never had an issue with google restoring my contacts. Everytime I put the gmail addy in it pulls it all over.
Doesn't the htc sync account do that as well? Try doing that. If all else fails and you have them in say outlook or still on google then you can export them as a comma separated value (CSV) file and then put that on your sd card then import them via the people app. You can then save to sim via the people app.
I am on VU now and it restored flawlessly from gmail.
This is one app on the market that you can look at.

I would recommend using my backup pro from the android market

[Q] How to backup my apps - not rooted

I want to root my phone but I want to back up my apps before I do so, mainly just xda premium because that's the only app I paid for. How do I do this if I'm not rooted?

Do a backup from your settings menu in phone. When you get a new phone just put in your gmail info on setup and it will automatically download most of your apps from the market. The last part is that any app you pay for stays with your gmail account. When you get a new phone and set up your gmail info go into market and you will see it say purchased. The catch is that you have to use that gmail account from here on out. If its not the main account on the phone neither of the previous suggestions will work.

oh ok sweet, i already had my gmail account set up so i guess i'm good
So when I went to the market to put xda premium back on my phone it's saying I have to buy it again. The market shows that I'm logged into my gmail account as well.

Astro, free in the Market. Once installed, Menu, Tools, Applications manager/Backup. Ir will create a folder called Backup and a subfolder inside it, called Apps.

If you are logged into the same Google account the purchase was made on, you can re-download any purchased app at any time without paying again.

Just remembered I bought it through Amazon so I got it that way.
Now another question. I had backup assistant with verizon and when I started my phone the first time I got it it loaded that up and put in all my contacts. How do I get it to do that now that I'm running gummyCHARGED
Okay maybe a stupid question
I'm a developer.. but this is my first Android phone... so forgive me if this is a stupid question.
If I buy an App on GmailAccount#1. Can I back it up and then restore it if my phone is synced to GmailAccount#2?
Reason I ask, and maybe this is the way it is suppose to be, but coming from an iPhone I am use to sharing apps with my wife's phone.
I researched a bit and it seems like the only way to do that is if you decided to setup a third gmail account, and make it the primary for both, and then sync our personals after that.
Is there an easier way to share apps within the household? Or is it suppose to be more of a 1 app per device vs 1app per household?
If I can't do both, I'll probably buy fewer apps, especially the more expensive ones. I could justify it more when at least I could get 2 (actually 3 cause I have an iPad too) installs out of it.
Apps are matched to the purchasing account and only the purchasing account.
I believe that's intentional, as it's a bit unfair to app developers for the OS provider to decide their apps can all be shared.
HOWEVER: if you put the Amazon Appstore on both phones and sign in to the same Amazon account, the Google account the phone's set up on is irrelevant. Most really good apps are on the Amazon Appstore now (and in general, the quality of apps is higher and they're certainly safer since Amazon approves every single app).

Multiple Google Accounts

So this is kinda random, but I'm sure others have run into it.
My wife and I both have Android phones (Gnex) with separate Google accounts, obviously. I have purchased apps on my account that I want to install on her phone, so I log my account into her phone and access the Play Store to install them. All is fine and dandy--works well. But then with my account on her phone, she gets my Google Talk IMs all the time. I have the account set to sync nothing. And I open Talk and manually sign out, but it keeps signing me in automatically. Is there anything to do about this? I want to basically block the account but still have access to it (I know it's crazy talk). lol. Any thoughts or imput? Thanks!
Well...it's possible to freeze google talk,if you're rooted...
But somehow I think play and talk are synced somehow ..freezing talk may create issues with talk
There is a tutorial for that on xda
Buying an app from the Play Store only entitles the particular user to use that app. From Google's point of view, you cannot use apps purchased from one account on another account.
Having said that, you can use Titanium Backup to create a backup of apps on your phone & then restore those apps on your wife's mobile. However, this would require you to be rooted.

If your wife doesn't use talk, then this above is a good idea.
I've always uninstalled talk through TitaniumBackup perfectly fine so freezing should not create any issues

My wife uses Talk for her account, so I don't want to disable it entirely. And we're rooted, yes. I install the apks most of the time, but since I own them, I was trying to do the legit thing. =)
