[Q] Internet Pass-Through and Hotspot combo? - HTC Inspire 4G

Im running a Miui rom, and heres what i wanna accomplish. i have the hotspot option available built into my rom, but no pass through option. that is, the ability to tether my phone to my laptop via usb and use its internet connection. so my first question is, is there an app that has this ability? second, is it possible to tether to my pcs connection, then extend that connection with my hotspot option?

Download pdanet. Google June fabrics.

G1 connecting to another G1 tether?

I have 2 G1's both are running cyanogenmod 4.2.15.1. One has a data plan, and the other does not, is there any way to connect the non-data G1 to the other through wifi tether? Every time I try, it just doesn't show up as an availiable network to connect.
Ask Google about enabling ad-hoc mode. Or you could tether through Bluetooth PAN:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=666988
I didn't try this, but both approaches should work.
Do you have some knowledge on unix systems?
I do remember hearing about Android not being able to connect to any ad-hoc wifi. I am not aware of anyone being able to do it.

Then now you are ;-) Many people use ad-hoc mode, there are plenty of howtos in the internet.
I've done it before... I use the WiFi tethering app available through Google Code. The project is Android-WiFi-Tether (sorry, I'm too new to post links). I don't know what app you are using to tether, but check the settings to see if it's got the SSID hidden.
but have you been able to use wifi tether to share the phone's connection with another Android phone? I've never had to, but I do remember hearing about problems with it. Then again it was a while ago and things could have very well changed.

Yes, I have been using that exact version of wifi tether. Iphone, samsung, and blackberry phone can connect, but no matter what I try I just can't get the g1 to even see the connection. I have changed the ssid, enabled WEP encryption, and even changed the channels to no avail............I guess it just wasn't ment to be LOL. I can't even connect using the bluetooth PAN option either
Ehh... again, from the beginning...
It is possible to use both ad-hoc and BT PAN on G1, but they are not supported officially, so you must do some hacking. Wireless Tether for Root does it for you, but it can start server only, not connect to existing networks and I don't know whether there is an app which simplify that second task.
You could try to find some app or howtos about doing it manually - through hacking. As I mentioned before, there are plenty of them in the internet.
Finally...
I would like to thank everyone for the help, I finally got it done, I just had to edit some settings using the terminal. If there is anyone else out there wanting to do the same as me, just search for ...How to connect to Ad Hoc networks using Tmobile G1 Android at hydtechblog"dot com"

yet another reason to get the nexus one, but then again mine does now too LOL
So the client phone can be hacked to be able to recognize and connect to ad-hoc, but this generally requires root access....... correct?
I have been unsuccessful at getting my wife's non-rooted Eris to my rooted Droid.

Yeah, exactly
Also there are patches floating around to add ad-hoc support (to connect to them like to normal AP networks), so maybe some roms have it, but most (all?) of devices just can't use ad-hoc on original rom.
I would have just used wired tether...
Never had a problem with ANY android device I've connected to my g1.
I just like to keep things simplistic in specific situations...

Reverse Tether

I didn't know whether to put this in the "Android Software Development" forum or this one but does anyone know of an app that can preform reverse tether (with the help of tweaking the computers network) via USB and at the same time tether via WiFi.
ie: The phone will use the computer's internet via USB and then allow other devices to connect to the phone via WiFi and use the original computers internet. Basically turning the phone into a mini-router.
I don't know if this would even be possible. Seems like there would be a lot of data clutter. But I have seen apps out there that can preform reverse tether via WiFi on an ad hoc network.
I assume that if I can get at least the USB reverse tethering to work. I'd be able to use Froyo's built in WiFi tethering also assuming it uses the computers network and not default to 3G.
And the reason for even needing this app?
Is because 20Mbs > 3Mbs.

CyanogenMod-6.0.0 RC1
A Wireless G Router can be had for less than $20.00 - You can probably find a friend with an old one to give to you.

Why use the phone for this?
I don't know how to get it to work but on Android in a vm it says on the Android that the internet is being tethered to it through Ethernet I don't know If its an app ill take a screen shot later

Enabling usb tethering

Am I missing something or is this option disabled? I can use the wifi hotspot but I believe that is going to become a paid feature with t mo in the future. Will visionary allow me to use the usb option?
Thanks

Usb and WiFi tether are both already baked in... they are free till the 14th when the package becomes avail for 15$
You won't have free baked in tether after the 14th unless we get full root with custom roms... pdanet should still work

How ill they disable tethering and Hotspot after that date ?
Will rolling back to original 2.2 ROM get around it (as the 2.2.1 update was supposed to include provisions for TMo to control it)?
Yea that's what I don't understand. How exactly is tmo going to disable this on the 14. Still though I can't enable usb tethering...

You should check and see if the USB Debugging is checked on. If so, you cannot connect or tether.

Probably not. We already have (temporary) root. Whatever they do to "enable" tethering can be accomplished with an app or script on a rooted device.
My plan is to take an image of the entire device before subscribing to the tether service, then again afterwards. A simple diff between the two should tell us where the tether bit is being set.
On a related note, I can't for the life of me get the built-in wifi tether to work on multiple machines (mac, windows, linux.) It seems like dnsmasq is not dishing out dhcp replies properly. Can anyone confirm that tethering is working - both USB and WiFi??

Well, since they have added a bunch of "crap" to the tether procedure, that's probably how they are going to disable it. The phone probably checks online with tmo if you have the service enabled, and refuses to work otherwise.
Stock froyo has a checkbox and settings. No "Loading..." and "wizard" crap. It just works.
This is fairly trivial to exploit - all one has to do is execute the "up" script with another application and it's done.
EDIT: Note that root enabled devices will still be able to use the google code android tether app, regardless of what Tmo puts in the "baked-in" tether feature.
i was able to get WiFi Hotspot to work but with horrible speed results. Less then 5kbps..
Installed WiFi Tether ran visionary and boom Full speed HotSpot for multiple PC's
I do not have this phone yet although, i see a USB driver available for this phone on HTC website (HTC COM)(support)(choose your product)(Tmobile mytouch 4g)(downloads)(mytouch 4g tethering driver) hope this helps...
To get the usb tethering to work you have to plug in the usb cable to the phone, then go to wireless settings, usb tethering ask the way at the bottom should be highlighted now so just click on it. If your phone isn't plugged into a usb cord then to the computer, you won't be able to click on it. How this helps

I tried to get it work and it connects to the wifi hotspot with no network acess and the usb tethering it says unable to enable. So i dont know.

Use phone as USB wifi card

Anyone know of an app that allows you to use your phone as a wifi card via USB? I don't have one for my laptop and i need to get on my LAN for some file transfers.

iam also looking for something like this... just like tethering but instead of mobile data use some wlan
PDANet allows you to share the Wifi connection of your phone through USB.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
This function is built in in desire HD and desire, just turn on wifi, connect to your wlan network, plug inn your phone and select share network connection (or something like that). Remember to turn off your 3g connection, or your phone will use that to connect your pc to internet
Well i started using wireless tether and creating a Bluetooth PAN and connecting to my LAN that way. Pdanet does work but i don't want to pay for access to secure https websites

[Q] Wi-Fi tethering / USB tethering

Hi guys, I have some tethering doubts that I'd like to share with you, since I'm about to get my ChaCha tomorrow.
Here in Brazil there are plans for unlimited data, but in a low speed, which is good for me because I'm not living in my home (I'm in a different city for a year) and I don't have internet here, so everyday I use tethering to access e-mail and other websites using my laptop.
Tethering is vital for me.
I know a few apps that do Wi-Fi Tethering (root needed) which ask for a kernel that has a specific functionality. Can ChaCha do Wi-Fi tethering normally?
What about USB Tethering? Anyone tried that and is it working properly? Which app do you use? And is it needed to be root to do USB Tethering? (because probably my ChaCha will be S-ON and it will take long for me to get a XTC Clip).
both function is build in & work well for me...
built-in you say that HTC ChaCha is already prepared to tether out of the box, without any external app and/or modifications?

HTC Sense has USB tethering included. I have used it when I bought the phone (as far as I can remember). When you'll connect the phone via USB cable a screen will show, just scroll at the bottom and you will see it.
I presume that WiFi also.
I use Wi-Fi tethering every day and its working great. No problems at all, no need for 3rd part apps.
if you do not like the stock app have a go of this:
https://market.android.com/details?id=android.tether
in my opinion the best wifi tethering app out there (needs root!)
Thanks for the help, guys. I already got my ChaCha and I'm using the bult-in wi-fi tethering. Not complains at all
