[Q] Audio Chip? - HTC Sensation

Is anybody privy to what audio chip will be used in this phone? Thats one major thing that will influence my decision.
I currently have a G2, and this phone, along with other htc phones ive had, always seem to lack in the power of the audio. All i want is a phone that volume output will rival the iphones at least.

Guess nobody knows...

Well if it's of any help to you, old HTC phones have a TI Audio Chip. Maybe they changed this in the Sensation since they are now advertising Hi-Fi Audio which in the best case scenario means a Wolfson 8994 Media Hub Chip.

Same here and had the same question with the Flyer. A Wolfson DAC would be a key selling argument for me. I am just fearful that the Hi-Fi reference is a direct link to the SRS audio enhancement algorithms, which are - frankly - crap; especially compared to BBE.

I have to agree. SRS is a joke.

Oh man. The more I think about it, the more I think they were advertising SRS. The desirability of this phone just plummeted for me. In addition to this, there isn't any lossless format support so in the end, what's the point?

Well I've tried SRS enhanced devices before (Sennheiser MM550) and in my opinion, they don't really sound that great. They just boost bass which I can already do with an equalizer. Btw, what kind of Shures are you using?

Any updates on this? The SGSII and the Sensation are so similar that the sound chip will be what ultimately decides for me.
Will the SGSII carry the same Wolfson DAC that was in the original Galaxy S? Or will the Sensation best it in SQ?

Yamaha shouldn't sound bad but not as good as Wolfson DAC.

i'm thinking to get one but if the sound is crappy as the desire hd and pretty much all htc's devices that i have owned i think i will pass and go for a samsung as they will have a better sound quality...
based on this video .. it seems that the sound is still crappy and as bad as the desire hd..

IMO the speaker is good enough. My bro has a Fascinate and that thing is louder than my MT4G. And kinda urking too because I can hear throughout the house. And for me I hardly use the rear speaker on my MT4G. I'm more of an earphone kinda guy, so when it comes to listening to media, videos, etc. I just use my favorite pair of earphones to experience true quality cuz I wanna hear the lows, mids, and highs on what I'm listening to. And for my notifications/ringtones as long I can hear it ring/vibrate I'm ol' good.

Having a loud loudspeakers is always a good thing since you can lower the volume to your liking so at least you have an option ... unlike HTC the highest volume is really low and unclear ...
I have lost lots of friends since I started using HTC devices .. can't hear the phone ringing especially outdoors

Sadly, I agree with you. If HTC advertises that they have Hi-Fi audio, it better be because of the DAC and not because of some joke of a feature like SRS.

[Q] anybody got experience with headphones from "beats by dr dre"?

Well i guess the title says it all. I'm looking for some over ear headphones, and since there are the first roms out with the "beats" sound i found the matching headphones in the internet (link below). I've got no place around where i could try some of them out, so the question to you guys here:
Does any of you have or had headphones of that kind, and if so what do you think about them? Are they worth the money cost?
Thx 76

You can probably get better quality elsewhere for the same price. Beats is in the same situation as apple, their products are equal or even worse to their competitors yet they charge way more through branding.

I personally love sennheiser I think it's a pretty solid brand. Their products aren't too flashy and the build quality is good.
As I'm a pretty hardcore gamer I do love my razer gear and was going to go for their product however I'm glad I didn't. Trying out new brands can be a good or bad experience, trying out sennheiser was a good one for me.
Razer is an amazing brand but it's focus is on the pc gaming sector. If you want good sound quality go for a company with this as their main focus.
Sorry for rambling on, hope this was of some help.

i was at the local saturn store yesterday to try out some headphones...
problem was, there was no possibility to test them with my own device.
they had the beats studio (299€) and they were connected to some mp3-player with 3 songs to listen to. sound was okay... but not more. definetley not worth the money.
i quess i have to look for another store were i can try some headphones with my own device and my own music.
but keep comming with suggestions!
thx again for your answers.

acutally i like my dhd as it is right now with the virtuos unity 2.39 and the "UNITY MusicBox XL Final".
there's a general problem... i don't want to change my headphones as often a i change my mobile or my rom. the best thing were some headphones that sound good with every device... but i quess that is just wishfull thinking.
i've been reading in a hifi forum and there you can't find one single good word regarding the "beats" at all. and the skullcandy stuff isn't very appreciated as well...
damn i never thought buying some headphones can be that hard.
I have a pair of Monster Beats Studio, they are great if you like songs with heavy bass. Other wise for the same price, you could easily grab other high end headphones like Bose QuietComfort15 and Sennheiser HD series. The reason I bought them is solely because of style.
Personally I find them too heavy and clumsy to carry around. It's tiring to wear them all day long too and my ears end up sweating all round. So I only use it when I'm on a plane or when I'm home. I'll definitely get a pair of Bose next time
If you want music on the go, get something light, there are many great in-ear earphones around.

No one's asked the budget question!
Like anything, whether it be cars or phones, what headphones or earphones to buy depends on how much you'd like to spend.
You're also probably better off buying a brand and model that you'll see audio engineers use in a recording studio. At least for quality if not bling.
On the subject of Bling and Beats: you're paying for branding and marketing, nothing else. In particular, HTC needs a way to make a return on the $309M they invested in the brand recently:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/08/11/htc_beats/
It's for reasons like that, that Beats are relatively expensive. Brands like Shure are still expensive but at least they sound more transparent, which is surely what you want.
By the way, I don't get this 'Beats' sound setting. All it can possibly be is some kind of EQ setting.
Well thanks again folks...
I had the chance to test the beats solo hd and the studios on my dhd (with the beats sound integrated in the new rcmix runny 1.5 rom) and i have to say that the sound is not bad... But some how it sounds much better with srs or dolby mobile. Btw is that beats sound feature in the original sensation xe really only a software thing or is there specific hardware involved?
Back to topic: i decided not to buy beats. If youre out for style only they are top of the list. But the sound (not bad isn't enough) and the way too high prices keep me away.
I'll try to find a store where i can test some of the things you suggested.
Maybe i'll even go look for in ears.
So the neverending search for headphones with good sound & a little bit of style goes on.
Keep coming with ideas!
Big thanks 76

There's a huge difference between "good" and "worth 300 euros".

I dont get this.

I dont get why every one need beats audio?? You can easy make better sounding audio with simple eq , without some beats mod. Tell me why all wants it? It is becouse they dont know how to use eq or they dont get nothing from music??

It's the same reason everyone buys the crappy beats headphones now, when high-quality, expensive headphones have existed for years.
Seriously I see so many people with those overpriced beats headphones all the time. But before beats headphones came out, how often did you see someone walking around with an expensive set of headphones? Once a year, if that? Everyone used the crappy ipod earbuds. Now that they've slapped the cool "beats by dr. dre" logo on it, all of a sudden everyone is spending hundreds of dollars on headphones. It's just to look cool and feel hip.
Same with the beats audio. Equalizers have existed for years but now people want to feel slick and cool so they use this "beats audio by dr. dre" thing that HTC coders put together in about 3 seconds flat while having a beer.
Self satisfaction for me.
First off, I must clarify that I dislike beats. But since the xe version was released I realized that my stock sensation is nothing but a downgrade of what it should be, so I decided to flash the xe version of arhd for the higher/original clockspeed and the beats eq..just totally for self satisfaction. Spent less for more, that kind of feel ;p
Now that I got that out of the way, poweramp is my primary player.
Cheers
I know how to use an EQ but can't really be bothered with them now. Beats sounds pretty decent with my music so I don't mind it there.
That said, if it were gone I would just use an EQ e.g. the one in PowerAMP but since I don't need to, I don't bother and use Beats instead.
Most famous Celebs , tons of $$ just to make every one need "beats audio"
so the answer is ADVERTISING
I never felt the difference between stock EQ effects and the beats one no matter how good headphones i tried ...
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using xda premium
When you don't have a clue on eq, just flash beats mod. No need to get mad over it, not everyone can customize an eq like you can.
First of all I'm not a beats fan but I don't have something against it either. I don't get the people who complain about HTC's partnership with beats. They might be "overpriced" or "a gimmick" as some call them but this doesn't change the fact that the ibeats are the BEST headphones that come with a smartphone in the box. They also provide a preinstalled software enhancement for people who don't know how to use an equalizer (most of the people)! I have an OG Sensation ( loaded with IC 5.1.7 ) but I would be happier if ibeats came with it cause they surely are better than the stock HTC headphones ( and every other smartphone OEM's stock headphones ). So I don't see anything wrong with people who want beats! Btw I rarely use beats as I don't use my phone for music!

That or there actually is a difference in audio quality. Not the greatest headset I have no me but with the sennheiser hd555, there is a change in quality whether with beats or poweramp
But most of the time I only use the HD555 connected to an external amp that is connected to my pc. I use a cheap AudioTechnica in ears for my phone
well, for my ears, beats are pretty much good sounding, the only problem it had, is the price! for $150 (retail price in here) , the price performance ratio is pretty bad , for this price, i could get some BA IEM's,,
but well, it is still a good sounding , and if it is sold in $30, maybe it will be worth it.
i often tried my friend iBeats from his XE, and it is indeed the best stock earphones included in a phone package (eventho , XE is way more priced than normal sensation) , but well, if someone said that BEATS IS THE BEST SOUNDING IEM/HEADPHONE, thats sooooo no true
i love my JH16 for music listening , and if you say that beats is better than JH16? you'll need to check your ears

The problem with equalizers is that when you use one, the music isn't the way you're supposed to hear it (assuming that the quality of the song itself is good).
I don't use an eq OR beats, and only use the ear buds that I came in the box with my old Galaxy S 4G! Produces a decent sound, I think.

But having it on your phone allows you to prove how **** your mates phones are, and even more so how **** apple are,,,, Not because they dont have beats but because their apple users which automatically makes them **** heads !!

Yeah htc won't do beats earbuds again. After the ReZound they figured out people don't buy phones because of the head phones. They lost money on it; however, all the next htc phones will have beats integration.
True that most buyers who really care about the sound quality will use their own headphones anyway, but the bundled Beats headphones in the Sensation XE were, I thought, a really good way to get nice(r) headphones into the ears of more people. However if it was really cutting into their margins I can understand why.
Anyone else find the One S has a really good speaker? Alarms and rings are really loud!
One thing I missed when I ditched my iPod and went solely with Android is the music volume. On my EVO, for me, the music volume isn't loud enough...I can go max volume which I shouldn't be able to do. Hoping the One S is a bit louder.
The 'beats audio' for me it is just pure marketing. Nothing more, Period.
I'm a proud owner of One S but, honestly, my iPod Nano provides slight better sound quality than this device.
Can ayone comment on the audio quality when music is played through the speaker, in comparison to say, a Nokia device?
I have an HD2 currently and am thinking hard about going to the One S but I've always found the HTC speaker output when playing music to be really bad in comparison to other manufacturers - even much older phones.
I have BT headphones which always give me good sound, so that's no problem, but there are times when you just want to put some music on and stick the device on your desk, or whatever.
Thanks in advance

I found that the speaker on this is pretty epic, at least compared to the desire Z. Quality is much better and volume is much louder.

infuse vs others sound quality

considering other options for a mobile device. what i'm wanting to know is how can i tell which phones have the best output sound quality? i've grown quite fond of our phones with voodoo. i use poweramp to play music and absolutely love the sound.
i've heard other friends phones that arent compatible with voodoo and they just dont sound the same.. almost like the difference between stereo and mono.
i realize voodoo isnt compatible with newer galaxy devices because of the different chips, but hoping they might still sound as good. thanks for any input
The Infuse has the Wolfson DAC that is why it sounds good.
Look for other phones with that DAC then they should sound good too. I heard the sound of a Samsung Note and to me it sounded rather "flat". That one has a Yamaha DAC.
I haven't found a newer device with Voodoo Sound support. Nexus S could work if you're willing to cut specs for Android 4.
the asus transformer tablet has a wolfson dac. and it does have voodoo support.
Are there no other chipsets that have the same audio quality as ours? The device doesn't necessarily have to support voodoo, I'm sure the same effects could be achieved without it..
So..basically the infuse is the "best device" capable of producing this kind of audio quality?
That's disappointing..its really the only reason I haven't upgraded yet. I wonder how it compares to non Samsung devices, out even non Android devices. I'm open to switching platforms and brands
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk 2
I tried a WP7 Titan prototype and was dissappointed. The only other option I've heard of is an iPhone using an external DAC with an amp for your headphones. Too much work IMO.
Wow I didn't think the options would be limited to devices before the infuse lol I'm kinda partial to having one device for all my needs. Its a shame manufacturers are slowly drifting towards cost/benefit for the majority looks like I'm keeping my infuse.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk 2
captivate uses the wolfson chip,,yeah not an upgrade, now if cowon and sam would hook up it would be awsome
I have been researching this for a long time and nothing I have found compares to a voodoo enhanced Wolfson DAC (excluding line out amps). I contacted Supercurio before deciding on a device to see what he personally has found to give the best sound (I trust his ears) and the response was Nexus S or Infuse. The tw6040 in the g-nexus is "ok", better than yamaha but not as good as cirrus (newer iPhones). Infuse was my choice and still yet to find a true contender!

ok, so this brings me to my next question.. no suitable replacement currently available from att with wolfson dac.. are there any international devices sporting the wolfson chipset? ex: gs2, galaxy note.. etc.. ? where can i find out which audio chipset each device has? i've been looking all day. i cant even find a site that mentions what chip the infuse has unless i type in " infuse wolfson" but that defeats the purpose, because i already know that!

I work at a telco that just launched it last week (and one-v) and it sounds just like the sensation xl. So yea, just beats. Not as good as voodoo and that was comparing both on dre solo hds. But hey, ears are all different so might sound good to you.

When I was looking for "the one" I was calling around manufacturers asking about their chipsets. The unanamous response was "we cannot disclose that information" so it's all hush hush. I was trawling daily looking for references to teardowns and specs looking for things like "DAC" and "Audio chip". Painstaking but I found the infuse (I live in new zealand) and couldn't be happier. If I find anything as I keep searching from time to time I will update here

Have you looked into the LG G2X ? I believe that one has a Wolfson DAC if i am not mistaken.
I personally am going to hold off on upgrading devices until i find something comparable to the Infuse or Nexus S.
Call me crazy but that is one of the reasons, or the main reason I sold my Galaxy Nexus and kept the Infuse 4G instead.

I did not spend too much time testing or tweaking it, but right out of the box i can say it didn't really please my ears. I have a decent headphone audio setup in the $800 range that includes a dedicated USB DAC/Amp coupled with a pair of Sennheiser HD650 and the Infuse still satisfies my needs in comparison.
So yeah, to answer your question, decent enough if you don't really have sensitive ears or you are one of those folks that believe beats by Dre is great audio.(Including headphones, or beats by Dre lib mod junk that you see here around the forums, etc..)

I believe its good lol but hate the stock sound with all the heavy bass, i tune it from there. Then to me it sounds good on a good headset or stero system. The best sound that came out of my infuse was in my car with beats installed on cm7, along with voodoo tuning. It sounded amazing (to me and everyone who heard it lol).

My ears disagree with this. I too have hd650s and also some grado's but for portable music my dre solo hds murder them for clarity - especially on the infuse. I just use poweramp to tweak the highs slightly and to me they sound incredible for the electronic music I listen to. They shake my head like nothing else. Love it to bits!
To each their own I guess.

HTC one S vs Galaxy Nexus

hey guys
I had some requests to compare this 2 phones. I personally believe they are way too different from each other (internal and externally ) but some people are still on the verge to buy one of this 2 devices
So I made a little video side by side for you

LOL, "sponsored by beats audio so the audio on this one is definitely way better".
Stopped watching the review right there. You know Beats Audio is just an equalizer setting right?... just on/off and you can't even control anything. DSP manager on a custom ROM is better. Beats is basically nothing. Try looking it up and finding out exactly what it is, that information is nowhere because it isn't anything. Its not a special DAC, not special hardware, not a certification of signal to noise ratio, it is just a label that they print on the phone and a ****ty equalizer that you turn on and off.
Also, the HTC One S has audio problems on the stock ROM, who knows if its caused by Beats or not. For example, in iHeartRadio sometimes it goes silent between songs and you have to either skip or thumbs down the song to get the audio playing again. CM9 / AOKP don't have this problem... not sure if thats because Beats is gone.

OK let me start with a disclaimer
My review is my opinion which is the way I perceived the device. Also this review is not for tech junkies like us . But for the average user as well. I cant go into details to them what why and how beats work on the phone In my case it was better and I liked it , and believe it delivered better audio performance. ( only better thing than the nexus)
The issues you are experiencing haven't happen to me (thanks god) nor I've seen a large group complaining about it but I could be very wrong
I found that the Audio quality and loudness on the S is better than my nexus . I decided to test it also against my friends nexus with a stock rom and I still liked the S more. It is an equalizer yes.. it gives better sound in my opinion ? Yes as well
Is it a software or hardware issue ? I couldn't tell however I am not affected by it . But I hope they get it figured out!
Thanks!

Beats is crap. The stupid icon pops up even time navigation instructions are read. I also do mostly audio streaming to car or home avr and both have much better equalizers then Beats. With Beats ON music actually sounds much worse.
Does it sound better then Nexus in speaker phone mode......yes it does, can you make Nexus sound the same.....probably with DSP Manager
I am glad I don't have Beats

Average users appreciate the truth. They appreciate it when you tell them that a $5 HDMI cable will perform just as well as the $80 Monster Cable HDMI cable.
With Beats Audio it is no different. In fact, they're owned by the same parent company. Its a scam.
If you like the audio better on the One S then say that. That is fine and your subjective opinion and I agree with you. The audio is great; but it has nothing to do with Beats. It sounds great on CM9 and AOKP as well.
I missed it FunkyElf- where is your review?
Air bubbles on the Galaxy Nexus, air bubbles on the galaxy nexus... (sorry, my OCD)
About the Beats thing. I'm not sure what the hell it is but damn, there IS a big change when I enable them and I never had this kind of sound previously with only PowerAmp (disclamer: I have Beats Solo HD headphones). I wish some audio professionals would do some serious tests on that matter because it really bug me up...

Did you even look?
Beats audio. Goto to EQ, Make it flat. Take the second from last and second from first sliders and move them up a little. Bam. You have beats audio. This has been a "feature" on radios since the 60's. Its called a loudness button. Why some people prefer the "boomy" sound is beyond me. I personally like my sound flat, on most all styles of music.
Anyway, to each there own. I do think the sound on my one s is a little cleaner then on my other phones. This has nothing to do with the beats audio, and has more to do with whatever codecs they are using to emulate the hardware sound controller.
Beats audio on Sense 4.0 adapt to your Beats headphones so it's not just simple as one band EQ change also, it's not Loudness Compensation.
Really? So basically it eqs to compensate the frequency range of whichever beatsaudio headphones you buy? It just sounded like loudness to me.

This is really one of the worst reviews I have ever seen. You just said what the specs are from each phone. Wow I knew them already from head.
You didn't even try to elaborate on things such as why beats audio is better for example. Which I totally disagree with btw

In think you misread the title where it says comparison and not review. I am not going in depth on the device but what I am doing is COMPARING them side by side. Not that many people have the luck to have both devices at the same time so they can again COMPARE ..not only internally but externally as well
I am glad that you knew the specs of each device however there are a lot of folks out there that don't and this video was mostly aimed for them
Thanks for your constructive criticisms tho

Beats doesn't intelligently adapt to anything. The overpriced Beats headphones sound better to people who like boomy bass because the Beats EQ setting sets it that way.
It actually is as simple as setting an EQ band. There's no Dr. Dre hardware magic in this phone or anything else with the Beats logo on it.
im torn i dont know which one to get ahhhh! it seems the nexus has more devs and things but im a sense fan soo idkk but what if something goes wrong with the one s i've read a couple of threads there seems to be alot of problems with the one s such as the whole s3 s4 things and some of them have heating problems plus i can battery pull if something goes wrong

I've had each phone. Actually, 3 Galaxy Nexus's and 2 One S's. I chose to keep the One S because it is faster, has better battery life, and isn't huge.
I'm actually tempted to swap my one s for a nexus. mainly due to the touch button issue. its really becoming annoying now and the phone is basically unusable when it happens!
