I have successfully rooted my phone and have freed up memory by replacing the FOTA files with 0 k files. I want to take out some of the bloatware using titanium backup. I have the free version.
I used titanium backup to backup some of the files i want to delete like doubletwist and airsync. I then used titanium to uninstall them. Now that i have done so, both of them no longer just start up for no apparent reason like they used to which has freed up some ram memory, but they seem to still be on my galaxy s 4g. I can see them in the app drawer and they still will run if i click to start them (i am using the free titanium backup app)
I have noticed others who have deleted bloatware, but I am curious. Are those of you who have
1) using titanium to uninstall these apps.
2) do they completely disappear from your phone/app drawer.
I am backing them up on my sd card because if i do fully delete them I want a way to restore them if I have to return my phone for warranty issues.

I was able to completely uninstall airsync, and thinkfree office.
I created a backup for both, but now cannot restore the apps that were deleted. Not that I want to. I just want toe option to be able to.
I cannot for the life of me get doubletwist to uninstall. When I do, it says it is, but then if i refresh it shows that it still is installed.

Hey guys. I have been using Sprite Mobile to back up my PIM and I am wondering which app is best for backing up my apps and games. For example, i have installed some games and I want to flash a new rom w/o losing my save game. What app backs up the appdata as well? All I know is that there are plenty of apps that help backup the .apk file but not my save games.
EDIT: Nevermind. I tried titanium backup after a long time again and it seems to to the trick. Not really sure if it restores my apps/games back to ext2 partition though.
So why am I getting insufficient space errors when updating or installing large apps when my free space says 1.93 gigs? Anyone else run into this? Any ideas how to fix?

I have had this a few times recently. Don't know why it is happening, however all I do is uninstall and then download the app again and it works.
This seems to be an issue with apps restored by Titanium Backup. I had the same thing happen to me with a few applications, including lock-ups when the market tried to re-install Angry Birds on top of the garbage Force Closing one TiBu restored.
If the phone isn't locking up, deleting the problem application via Settings->Manage Applications or through TiBu, then re-installing worked for me. After the re-install, TiBu can restore just the data successfully.
If the phone is locking up and you can't see the app to delete it then it gets trickier. I managed to get around this problem through these steps:
1. Delete related applications (Angry Birds RIO, Seasons) on the chance that it was a problem with applications by the same developer
2. Attempt another restore of Angry Birds from TiBu which locked the phone up
3. Fortunately, one of the two previous steps put the application back in Settings->Manage Applications so that I could delete it
4. Re-install the app from market and run once
5. Use TiBu to restore just the data and enjoy
I have moved all the apps I have that let me, to my SD card through the stock systems menu>settings>manage applications>Move to SD options.
I want to flash a new ROM. After flashing the ROM. Will all the data for those apps carry over? Is there anything that needs to be done to get them to work? Or will I boot up with the new ROM and go to app drawer and all the apps will still be there working just fine?
Also, when people talk about restoring apps, not data, I'm not quite sure how this works......
I have MyBackup Pro/Root version. Is App Data the data that is not supposed to be restored? From my understanding, that is what, for example, keeps the progress I have made in a game. Otherwise I have to start over. (And I JUST fully upgraded my level 10 car in Drag Racing! Ha ha).
Any help would be appreciated. Tried searching but didn't find anything related exactly to this. Well I did find one thread, but the OP fixed and and simply stated he fixed it, not how.
generally when people are talking about restoring user apps+data and not system data, they are referring to Titanium Backup which is the de facto in backup/restore, and there are options when restoring. you never restore system data or system apps, but any user apps+data is ok to restore.
i dont know about anything related to apps on SD. i NEVER use it.
Moving all your apps to the sd card is a waste of time. It will do nothing for you. It will not save your app data. Best to leave them on the phone. Backup your user apps and apps data as Pirateghost suggested with Titanium. Wipe the phone, install your new ROM and use titanium to restore your apps and apps data only. Do not backup or restore any system apps. Unless titanium backup has changed it will not restore apps MOVED to the sd card to the sd card. It will restore them on the phone's memory. That is why I suggest keeping your apps on the phone's internal memory.
Ah. Guess I should not believe the benefits flaunted around all the App 2 SD card things. I think it was that APP2SD App that says it frees up available phone memory when you move apps from phone to SD. Made sense to me..
I guess the phone has some space set aside for it's "RAM"? And no apps will be able to use that as storage space?
I'll move the stuff back then before I do the backup. Also, when I first started with Android and modding it, I bought MyBackup Pro. Does Titanium Backup do something better/different?
Titanium will also backup the app data. Example: game saves.

I remember when I restored with MyBackup Pro, those apps were not listed under "My Apps" in market place, and didn't show as "installed" in market place, and therefore would not update. the only time I used app 2 SD card is for the memory,sure some apps are like 2+mbs but it helps to move apps 2 Sd card to save from internal memory.. thats all.

yes, Tibu takes care of that for you. there is even a 'market doctor' built in that will scan apps and add stuff to market for you

You mean running out of internal storage space? Or was it taking a chunk out of the RAM memory?

Here is the issue. I use Titanium at the moment. I have many apps installed on my phone; so many that I HAVE to use the sd card for quite a few.
Now when I install a new ROM it creates a problem. I can't just use Titanium to install my apps in one batch step since Titanium only installs to the phone by default. I have to select about half. Then move them over to the sd card manually. Then go back and select some more. Then move them to the card. And then do the same with the last remaining apps. This tends to take some time to do and is a real pain.
Is there a backup software that will install everything as it was when it was backed up? If they were originally on the sd card then I want those apps to restore to the card by default. Is there anything like that?
I use Tom tool box pro and I'm pretty sure when you restore it restores everything account info themes all that stuff

Thanks for responding. Restoring account info and especially themes can cause issues jumping between ROMs. Would never do that. But does it restore apps originally on the sd card back on the sd card; or does it install everything on phone? That is all I care to know about.
Not sure what app would do what you want, but I put the word out there with the dev of ROM Cleaner.
His script backs up all your apps, wifi/BT/mail accounts and re-installs them before the first boot is even initiated. It also deletes unwanted apps/widgets that come with most sense ROMs. The great thing is if you dont want to delete all the apps and widgets that his script deletes, you can make it to where it won't. its very customizable in that aspect. Edit: You have to run a separate script to restore the wifi/BT/mail accounts, which you obviously don't need to if you don't want.

Patraics is a nice guy and VERY quick to respond to any questions you may have. I posted the question not even 5 minutes ago and already got a response saying that he will look into it.
EDIT: Because of his scripts, i don't even use TB anymore. His way is easier and less time consuming.
I'll have to look into it. I like Titanium backup with everything it does. But I don't know why it is so difficult for it to restore aps to the same location where they backed them up from. Going to send a suggestion to TB too.

TB does have some useful features, like freezing and uninstalling system apps. But realistically, if you arent going to use those system apps anyways, you can just have ROM Cleaner delete them before they even get the chance to be fully installed.
On the other hand, TB also does things that as flashaholics, we don't want it to do, like backup app data that can mess up a fresh flash. which is why I don't use it.
Although it does suck having to start angry birds from the beginning every time I find a new daily driver.... lol
Just an FYI though, IF you do decide to go ahead with ROM Cleaner, when it backs up your apps, it doesnt compress them or anything like that, it puts them all in a folder and then just leaves them there, leaving you to do the clean up, if you don't want those back ups to be there anymore.

For backing up apps I have found My Backup Pro to be very simple. Will backup all apps & media and or data. Also had freeze, unfreeze, wipe cache and wipe data capabilities. Curious why storing all apps on system instead of S.D. card at all? Will take up all of your storage space on system and slow your system down. Also if connecting to desktop only have access to S.D. card so that also limits your accessibility to your apps.
Tbo haven't have an issue of apps not going to SD with titanium backup. Exp, my xda app is on the SD and when I restore its back to SD. Dunno how but ill look and see

Titanium does what you ask. You just need to adjust your settings. Go to preferences>restoration location and chose "original location" instead of the default setting that allows titanium to choose.

That makes me feel so much like a NOOB. I have mentioned this in a few places on XDA and other forums. I have yet to have one person mention that there was a setting in the preferences. I swear it was not there the last time I looked but that was.....well quite some time ago. Thanks so much for bringing it to my attention. Noticed that there were many other new selections in there too. I guess I had the better backup software all along.

I backed them up before I did this. Now the system drive shows I have a bunch of space free, 326MB out of 1GB. Using other apps I am not sure. "Drives" shows two internal storages "Data" which has 681MB used and 326MB free and "System" which has 464MB used and 77MB free. I assume these are both the internal partition.
Trying to install anything from the Play Store results in a 'insufficient space' except for some really small apps. Since I don't know exactly how much space I have to work with, I can only guess. Uninstalling some apps normally doesn't allow me to install new ones either. Sometimes the phone will just eat the space.

That's not really what's wrong. I'm not too familiar with android, but I'm pretty sure my volumes aren't reporting deleted space that is actually free. I tried a program like CleanMaster to try and fix it as well as App Cache Cleaner, but they haven't seemed to help even though they reported that they fixed quite a few things initially.
It seems like whenever I uninstall something if I go through the system and look at apps, it shows more free space available. However when I try to install something new, it still says 'insufficient space'. Somehow the free space is not being freed up or marked as free for the system.
I almost want to say Titanium Backup is not giving the freespace back to the system and is instead just marking it as free, but not for the system. If that makes sense. So the system can't use it.
I can use Titanium Backup to restore apps even though the system says I have insufficient storage when I try to reinstall them. I shouldn't be able to do this without free space available. However when I do this I can't see it in the market or in the normal settings > apps on the system and in order to reintegrate it I need the pro version of Titanium Backup. I think TB isn't playing nice with the rest of the system in order to get you to buy a pro version of it.
