[Q] Is it time for me to buy a tablet? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

TLDR:
Buy now or wait since new stuff is coming out? I want the HTC Flyer stylus functionality, and the dockable keyboard functionality as well!
Hello All,
I'm a general tech junkie who loves to expensive toys and things to tinker with (so using anything Apple is pretty much out of the question). With that said, I'm generally not an early adopter. I hate the feeling of spending $500 on something then seeing something that makes me feel stupid for not waiting 3 - 6 months later.
With that said, I had been holding off on a tablet for a while. Initially I was not planning on purchasing a tablet (in it's current form) at all. When the iPad came out, I honestly thought it was a joke of 9 iPhones Gorilla Glued together and didn't see the point.
Honestly, I still don't see the point for anything else other than using on the couch for general use or using while traveling. Both my wife and I travel (normally not at the same time) with work and carrying 2 laptops can be a real hassle. A tablet (being much lighter) would be great. We could use something to video chat with, and not have restricted internet access (more of an issue with her since I can do anything except look at porn and other obvious "no-nos" at work). Additionally, I don't see the use for a 3G model since most of my use would be while in a hotel or at home, and anytime I need a wireless connection, I can just WiFi Hotspot my phone.
So now I see this model. It looks great. Does everything I'd want, and acts as a laptop when needed! The reviews are great, and this looks like THE tablet to buy... for now.
Today I saw a promo video for the HTC Flyer, and while I would not want to purchase a 7" tablet the integration into the calendar and Ever Note looks flawless (Yes, I am aware this is a promo video and that's what they're supposed to do!).
This promo got me thinking. This tablet with a keyboard accessory is what I was looking for, something with a keyboard that I could use when I wanted a keyboard, and when I just want to play Angry Birds birds on the couch on a bigger screen, or watch a movie on a plane, I can have just the tablet. No tethering required to a keyboard to type a long XDA-Forum post.
Unfortunately, not only do I want my cake, I want to eat it too. Being able to write notes, and potentially have them transcribed to text would be amazing for my line of work. Being able to write notes on documents would be amazing as well. I'm imagining that this isn't functionality that could come to the Transformer since styluses (styli?) don't work on any Android device I've used, so this either has to be hardware, or very custom software that I doubt they'd release.
So I'm a bit torn on what to do. Buy now, or wait for something with all the features I want. HTC does make a large variety of devices, so I have to wonder if they might eventually come out with their own Transformer.
What does everyone think? Buy now, or wait for the plethora of tablets to grow and the technology to normalize a bit before making the investment?

You should check out the new lenovo tablet coming out in june. It has both a stylus for writing and a detachable keyboard.

One big caveat is that the Scribe doesn't transcribe anything. It's basically just screenshots that are taken of whatever screen the user wants to annotate, and then notes can be taken on that.
This is a far cry from what Microsoft's been providing with Windows-based Tablet PC's for years, which treats "ink" as an actual data type that can be manipulated, copy, pasted, transcribed, etc. OneNote remains the best app for taking handwritten notes, with full searching.
I'd be more interested in the Lenovo if it provides that level of functionality, but it would be much more complex than just using a capacitive stylus to draw on the screen. And speaking for myself here, I'm not at all willing to wait until the late summer for it.

So is this something that is hardware or software controlled? The lenovo one sounds very appealing. I'm willing to wait, I just don't want to buy now and feel I should have waited 2 months. If I bought a Xoom, I'd be fuming right now.
Where can I get some info on the Lenovo one?
As for the Scribe, I wouldn't actually buy one on the account of a 7" screen and Froyo. I would really want the stylus features it offers, but it would need to be data, not drawing pictures. Linking this stuff directly to the calendar and Ever Note as well is great as well.

A couple of articles here about the Lenovo tablets here - http://thisismynext.com/ I'm a fan of the Thinkpad laptops so I'm looking forward to this although if I get the asus transformer I can't help but think I may then change it for the samsung tablet or this Lenovo one down the road.

(1) The thing about the samsung tablets (of any size) and the HTC is that (like the xoom) they're all laughingly overpriced.
The xoom is so overpriced that Motorola have sold so few that they have downgraded their economic forecast for the second quarter.
(2) Honeycomb transformer! someone offered me £430 for my used asus, i snatched out of their had so fast i might have broken their fingers
So i knowlonger have one! do i care? no!
If you like widgets wait two months for compatability to kick in.
I'm a huge user of rss news feeds and couldn't find one decent one that worked with honeycomb.
Also Dolphin HD web browser doesn't work, the standard browser is a crap one with tabs and a very very basic bookmarks feature.
I get another transformer when the keyboard is released and when i read of reviews of rss feeds and adw or vtl working properly.

Yes, the Xoom is very overpriced. The guys in Best Buy were even saying that it's obsolete now because of the newer stuff coming out.
Motorola shot itself in the foot with that device. It's a great piece of hardware, but at $800, I'd rather buy 2 Transformers. Hopefully, the Transformer starts the beginning of a pricing war.
One thing that is important to me is Community Support.
I had a WinMo 6.1 Samsung phone a few years ago. It was an amazing piece of hardware. It had a dial pad on the front of the device, and a slide out keyboard. No other WinMo device had the dial pad on the front. The problem was that unlike the majority of HTC phones that were on multiple carriers, this one was a VZW exclusive, meaning this phone had 0 community support. I bought my Touch Pro 2 about a year or so later, and within a week had a MightyROM on it.
I don't want to buy this and be stuck running stock. I want to see if some of the "indy" devs will hop on and make some amazing ROMs that keep all functionality.
Lack of widgets right now doesn't bother me too much. I expect the amount of apps and widgets available to be smaller right now. The amount of growth Android as a platform has experienced since the OG Droid was launched has been nuts, so I have no doubt that widgets and apps will begin flooding in within 3 - 6 months.
EDIT:
Just checked that link on the Lenovo. I don't want to waste my time waiting for a 10" tablet either with stylus support. If it's not 10", I'm not interested (inb4 "That's what she said!" ).

Need a suggestion

Ok, so I've gone through multiple devices and wanted to get an opinion before seeing where I should go next. I am looking for a device, whether a phone or tablet or both, to help with my daily planning and being organized. I need to be able to write emails and integrate gmail, google calender, a detailed contacts list to have description/notes about them, be able to edit/create some basic excel documents, access dropbox to add/edit files and browse the web with the option of going to flash sites if needed. I currently came off of a G2 and the android devices that I've had that are still current are the G2, MT4G, Nexus S, HD2 with Android, galaxy tab. I didn't like the G2 as the data hand off was weird in my area, mt4g just didn't feel right, and the Tab wasn't unique since it was still on 2.2
I was trying to decide on what ever device and getting either the iPad 2/ iPad or xoom (unless I should wait for something else? HTC flyer? I like the size) or getting an Incredible S? I was trying to justify a tablet and get rid of my laptop since I don't really use it either.
I am currently on T-Mobile US so any suggestions would be great. I need to get off this N8 as its too boring for me, unless I get a tablet soon
Also, if I were to get an android phone, what would getting an android tablet do? Is there something I would be able to do on that tablet that I wouldn't be able to do on the phone?
Asus EEE transformer 3.0 detachable keyboard tegra dual core........ This is going to be a great tablet 10 " size out in the next 4 weeks
I've debated the same thing. After simply using the evo, I'd really hate to have to lug around a tablet...... but I honestly just can't use a phone when it comes to excel. So then I should buy a tablet right? Well, maybe not. Like many people, given the choice, I'd rather have a real keyboard than touchscreen. So why not just get a netbook? Same size/hassle as a tablet. But not as cool. lol
Well I have a netbook already and I just wanted something a little more convenient to use. I figured a tablet gets straight to the point and is easy to display to others when they need to see what my schedule looks like or my availability for the up coming weeks. I'm thinking of getting a smaller tablet now, since it'd be more portable so we'll see how it goes. The HTC flyer looks nice, but no idea what the price tag as going to be.
i've read of a few technical problems on the ipad2 which apple aren't owning up to, in true apple style. no idea what they are, just that i've seen the complaints but didn't take much notice. as cool as tablets are, i think they're in their infancy.
true, but xoom also has issues too. No device is perfect anymore
frankly im a fan of apple
The iPad 1 are becoming pretty cheap now. Get one off Craigslist
It sounds like you would be a good fit for a Xoom. It's new, interesting, you're already familiar with the android world, very flexible, and can do all of the things you want it to do. Check out some of the Youtube videos.

[Q] Is it worth it?

hello, I've been recently looking at tablets. I want something pretty decently nice, with honeycomb (which you can put on this), and just generally nice specs. But my real question is, is this thing a piece of complete crap? it's off brand for things i buy usually, but I've seen generally good reviews. I've also been looking at the Transformer and the Xoom. Thank you all for the help.
considering that you can get one on Ebay for under $250, I would say yes, it's most definitely worth it.
Even with Froyo roms, it's a very useful tablet that will probably do the things that you want it to do. Yes, the screen angles are not ideal, but they are acceptable (in my opinion)
Put it this way, is buying a transformer, or Xoom for almost twice as much going to be just as useless when the newest tablets come out for Christmas?
I believe that it's a question of perception. What do you want to use it for?
and who knows, when Ice Cream Sandwich gets released, it may be easier to port to the G-Tablet than Honeycomb.
Well the transformer is only $150 more.. ill look up a comparison between the two. That was the other one I am still honestly considering

I guess my point was, is the transformer going to be just as obsolete when the new tablets arrive? Nvidea is releasing a new tegra platform, that will basically make anything running on a tegra2 old hat. This would include the Xoom, Transformer, Iconia, as well as the G-Tablet, Adam, Vega, etc. These things depreciate faster than a car driven off the dealer's lot. Originally what, $450 when they were released? I bought mine for $300 (with a few extras) on Ebay. now they are retailing for $250 in Woot deals and Tiger Direct, while used ones on Ebay are plummeting down to nearly $200. When the new Tegra devices are released, I suspect that a G-tablet can be bought for $100 used.
What I mean, is why not save the $150 now, to put toward a better tablet down the line...The g-tablet will at least give you a less expensive introduction to the android tablet world, while still being a quite useful tool.
I would just hate to see somebody spend more money on a similar tablet that will cause them buyers remorse in 3 months or so. Of course, if you have the cash to burn, then go ahead and buy what you really want...for most people, that's an iPad...jk

Honeycomb is not completely functional on the gtab (as of now). It is missing the Honeycomb specific drivers from Nvidia (aka full hardware acceleration, high def video).
If you really care about Honeycomb you should get the transformer IMO.
Although, I am quite happy with froyo based ROMs
Others are right in saying that quad core Tegra 3s are around the corner, Tegra 2 prices might drop by the end of the year. Given how Nvidia and Viewsonic acted regarding the gtab, I foresee support for Tegra 2s dropping drastically as newer hardware gets released.
Yeah the almost fully functioning honeycomb on here is fine for me. Should be ordering my g tab this week!

Hello, I wrote a quick review for some guys that I work with. I am sure there are many reviews of the gtablet, but...
Here are my conclusions so far;
This thing is about the same size as the Xoom, and thicker than the IPAD. It is definitely not as sexy.
The screen is OK. It is not a high quality screen like you find on the other devices.
The processor is great, and the memory is sufficient. Things move pretty quick.
The ROM out of the box REALLY sucked. I was hoping to just deal with it, but Google had not approved the tablet so there were NO Google apps at all. Not acceptable. It took me a couple of hours to learn (last night till around 1:00am), but I replaced the stock ROM with a hacked ROM with everything I wanted.
This thing is really just a big Android phone with no phone or GPS.
I loaded up my Sony Reader software, downloaded all of my books, and then imported them into a DRM capable reader that is better.
Although there are some ROMs that support Gingerbread screens, I think I will stick with this 2.2 (or is it 2.3) Android feel.
What will I use it for?
Reading ebooks, PDFs (Scientific American, Maximum PC)
Google apps – maps, search
Kayak, hotels.com apps
Games (mostly for the kids) – I got Android Market to work
Web Browsing / some forum reading (via Tapatalk)
Personal email reading and contacts (no work email will be set up)
Maybe occasional Skype and Gotomeeting (camera sucks, so mostly audio)
News and weather
Of course, with the exception of reading the ebooks, I would always use the Macbook Pro if it were available.
So the speed and memory makes this all possible, but the experience (screen, size, build) is not equivalent to the expensive tablets.
Biggest complaints?
No GPS
Screen is not easy to see at an angle
I needed to root the thing to make it useful, which means I now need to stay on top of that and update it manually
The 10.1 device is a bit bigger / bulkier than I expected – the weight is the same as the ipad I believe.
I “can” watch videos on it (even 1080p), but moving the files would be a drag… it uses a microSD card that I would need to pop ion an adapter, or I could use the USB connection. Maybe I can find a way to do it with wifi or Bluetooth.
No USB charging… WTF??? It comes with a separate adapter that has to plug into the wall…
The screen is a 1024x600 which is similar to most pads, but it is really inferior to the Macbook Pro, and there is just something that is “fuzzy” about it.
Biggest positives?
Cheap - $269 delivered (no tax or shipping)
Fast
Should do what I want…
Next Steps…
See how much I actually use it for anything other than ebooks. If I do end up needing it more than I think, I would consider the Asus Transformer or something else new in the next year or so.
Hope this helps,
R

The screen is complete crap.
You should look hard for something with a better screen around $300-$350. If you can find it, get it.
And I *like* my Gtab - but its really just for kicking around and messing with roms and android. The screen really is killer bad unless you use it only at night, head on
Honeycomb works, and works well, as well as you could hope for unsupported xda rom hacking - ie, no netflix, no Hardware acceleration, occasional stand on your head workarounds, and the possibility of sudden death... well, ok, not that last one.
Bottom line: if you can find it for $100-$200, and want to play with roms, and tweak, and screw with it a lot to get it to be as good as a $400 one except for the horrible screen that cannot be fixed, YES, this is your tablet.
If you want a tablet to take out of the box and use, with rom updates from the manufacturer, and a screen you can read ebooks off of, this is NOT your tablet. Even for free.
So should I just get the transformer? Ah so many decisions!
Well I'm literally about to go to fry electronics and ill test out some there. Thanks !

For $400, I'd say yeah.
Better screen, 1Kx800 resolution, 2x the ram. Yeah, looks like that's all worth $120.
Oh... and a GPS too.
Oh, and Honeycomb 3.1 from Asus. Plus lots of XDA love it seems.

I think the main question is what you want the tablet for or what to do with it.
A cheap $250-300 laptop has so much more computing power and practical use than any tablet...just a bit bulkier.
The tablet market will have much more offerings and better with faster cpus and such..just have to wait a bit.
I bought my gtab from woot 4/2011 for $275. I have installed several ROMs on it. They all are pretty good with their own pluses and minuses.
I'm currently on Flashback 5.4 HC: it looks nice and works well. Gmail, Talk - w/o video; G-Voice, Maps, Lattitude, Earth etc all work. You Tube works; a bunch of games works. The big screen is better than the phone size screen. Nice quick weather apps. Nice calendar.
What it cannot do is replace the screen and functionality of my desktop for real work.
If you can find a cheap Gtab and play with ROM's, flashing, androids quirks etc - jsut for the fun of it, then get a gtab. Fully flashable with great recovery process. Almost 99.99% Non-brickable. Get a used one for play and test.
If you want a decent a functional tablet w/o hassle, get an I-pad2.
I have read many complaints about the viewing angle of the screen, but I have had my tablet for months and I have no complaints. It has replaced my planner for work and is great for watching movies, not sharing with my neighbor.

[Q] Should I sell my iPad and buy a Transformer?

Hi all,
I recently switched from an iPhone to a Dell Streak (android). It's gone well (there a + and - to both) and now I'm thinking of selling my iPad 1 and purchasing a Transformer.
I have tested one in a shop (no keyboard though) and it seems faster and lighter (although not as tough).
I'm still sitting on the fence at the moment and was wondering if any Transformer users can share their opinions and experience to influence my decision.
Thanks
I wanted to buy an iPad so much at its launch
Afterwards, I discovered the transformer (and slider, not yet launched), so much more possibilities with transformer ...
keep the iPad, it's way better
Get the Transformer, it's WAY better. I know several iPad2 owners that have upgraded, and none of them regret it one bit.
Thanks for the responses guys! Keep em coming.
Just to clarify I have the ipad 1 64 gb. It only has 256 mb ram which means 2 or 3 browser tabs and thats it!
The apps on the ipad may be better but to be honest, the only app I use on the ipad is the browser. If I switch over to android I can use firefox
Looking forward to more responses.
Thanks
I've used iPad 1 and 2 and must say I much prefer the Transformer. For what I need (pretty much a netbook), the iPad just is not compatible. There's no way to go around iOS with a keyboard (even if you did find a good dock -- there isn't one). There's plenty of things you take for granted with a laptop like connectivity that you simply cannot get with an iPad. USB OTG, NTFS drives, CIFS, proper bluetooth, actual USB and HDMI ports and so on. And then there's the whole iTunes rubbish. And yes, I used iOS 5.0 beta and you still need a computer to use an iPad.
I haven't even covered multi-tasking with switching between apps yet.
definitely, TF!

Which is complete nonsense, I hate apple for all the limitation imposed to the customer simply to make money... the whole company policy is rubbish... The whole Itune thing is really about taking consumers for cash cows. However lots of people find a great comfort in having a very intuitive platform, so it also has its good sides...
>out of the box experience is much more complete with Android tablets.
Plus, say you buy a TF, should you need something that is not directly coming with it, be sure that someone out there is making it and sharing it... and it is all legal without warranty void.
And it is much cheaper.
Either I am wrong and Ipad (apple in general) is super top cool, or I am a bit right and Ipad buyers are users that have limited needs, or in some cases buy stuff cause it is cool and showed off by CNN news anchors while reporting.. rolleyes
It all come down to what you need the thing for.
We have an iPad and the transformer at home. The trasnformer is actually fantastic- the ONLY drawback has been the lack of Netflix and Xfinity playback but I really think both of those will be available in a relatively short time.
I was really on the fence about keeping the transformer vs. the ipad and then we plugged a passport drive in to the transformer and I had a TB worth of movies ready to view! That makes it so much more to me than the iPad, I can remote to my desktop and with the keyboard dock it's amazing.
Not to knock the iPad, it's very very cool - but I really love the transformer.
I kept both.
The iPad is a much better casual machine, the Transformer is a better productivity machine.
Between iPad 1 and Transformer... Transformer wins hands down!!
Between iPad 2 and Transformer... I like both! They each have their pros and cons.
If you can have both, it would be the best option.
I have an iPad 1, a Transformer and a Galaxy Tab 10.1. Of all 3 devices the Tab is the best (overall), but the Transformer stands out for it's docking capability. The iPad is in last place with it's restrictive OS and limited customization ability. I also hate iTunes.
I had the iPad 2 for few weeks and didn't even use it for more than 5 times. It's just a bigger iPod Touch.

I like the Transformer one main reason is because our company bought us all the TF101 32gb one. So free is always good.
I sold my iPad and bought the transformer.
Get the tf if u have a laptop and ud like to combine the two. Personally that's what I'm doing. I had a laptop and a dell streak 7. Sold both and both the one. Much better battery life too.

Really depends on what you're going to use it for. I always felt that Apple products were more business oriented, because of the limitations Apple puts on the products. Some see them as Apple being dumb, I see them as Apple making pure productivity devices.
Don't get me wrong though, the Transformer is really good at productivity though to. There's more customization too, and more of an ability to change what you want.
If you feel like jailbreaking the iPad, you can, but then again almost every release is the same thing, not to mention you have to wait for the few devs that do work on the iPad to release the jailbreak. The Transformer on the other hand, already has 4 or 5 different roms, people are working on Native booting Ubuntu, side booting Ubuntu, and hopefully MeeGo (don't hold me to that). I wanted a iPad when it first came out, and still want one now, but the want is slowly fading, as Android is growing more and more into a better OS, and there are more app developers. I am extremely happy with my Transformer, and wouldn't sell it for anything.
I am an Android fanboy. I have 3 Android devices. My X2 is my phone, my Transformer is my tablet, and my old Droid 1 is my mp3 player
You know that the ONLY person that can accurately decide this IS YOU. Will YOU be happy with it?
It does not matter what we say.
I was in the exact same boat you are in only 2 weeks ago. I decided to go with the Transformer primarily because of the Micro SD and the OS. It's so much easier to just swap out a micro SD card than it is to sync through iTunes. For instance, I like to have the capability to load up movies and apps for my 3 yr old daughter and then take them out and load up my movies. Go with the Transformer and you won't be disappointed... my 2 cents worth.
I would prefer the Transformer due to it's versatility and that android has less of a "big brother" approach. The iPad does have more tablet optimized apps than any of the Android Honeycomb based tablets, but that all will eventually change as Android develops.

Tablets

I think of all the tablets available today, the HP Touchpad is the one I would choose. I got to play with a few tablets recently. Among them were the iPad, Moto Xoom, HTC Flyer, Blackberry Playbook, Huawei Ideos and the HP Touchpad. The newest Sammys weren't available. Nor were the Acers.
First off, the BB Playbook was the absolute worst of them all. It took 3 people to accidentally figure out how to delete a picture. Whilst messing with it trying to navigate around the UI, I snapped a picture of myself and wanted it off the system. I looked and looked and looked and finally called one of the store associates to assist. After he played with it for a long time, he called another store associate. The second associate played with it for a very long time also and then accidentally figured it out. We all went through every menu we could find and the answer was a simple downward swipe from the top of the LCD frame.
This brought back memories of my experience with a BB phone. No friggin way would I buy a damn BB tablet.
The rest of the tablets were sweet. The HTC Flyer was super smooth and gorgeous. The Xoom is old news. And the iPad is tired. I was really surprised by the Huawei tablet. It's so inexpensive, yet it works really well. Nevertheless, I love WebOS and my play time with the HP tablets was great. It worked flawlessly and smoothly and has that excellent multitask system. Plus I love the style, size and shape.
When the Sammys come out, I'll give them a try also and see it they can best the HP.
I'm liking the xoom. A keyboard and a mouse and I can ditch the MacBook.
Following the rules
im not and idiot or a noob, im tyring to post legitimate feedback on an android rom i am currently using but i need 10 posts so here is one more, thanks for this stupid rule! 8
I have been using Droid ROMS, MODS and kernels since the G1.
OG Galaxy Tab
I have the OG Galaxy tab and it rocks honeycomb pretty well. By 2 year old loves netflix so I'm happy.
Oops
OG Galaxy as in the 7 inch version. Honeycomb is on thru a custom ROM.
When I was in the market for a tablet I took a look at the xoom, playbook, iconia, and the transformer. The xoom was off the list because it was out of my price range. The playbook, I could not find the back button do that was it. It came down to the iconia and transformer, and I chose the iconia because of the full sized usb port and flash on the back.

also that in order to get e-mail on the thing you need to be linked up via bluetooth with another phone.
i went to check one out, was in a game when i did, looking all over for the exit button, took me and another employee 20 minutes just to figure it out, swipe up....yeah, lets not put softkeys on it like we do with our phone, nah, no menu, a FRIGGAN SWIPE MOTION!, i can't blame them for trying to be inovative, but the "physical buttons" for the playbook are so small that someone would need a stylus just to press the friggin' buttons.
it has flash, and 1080p playback....yet the camera on it sucks.
RIM, try harder next time.
I don't have a tablet. But I would like one!

The store I was at had a couple Playbooks on display at different areas of the store and the first one I came to had a non-functional small round button on the top...the button about the size of a bb pellet. I didn't know it didn't function; that it was damaged, and figured it was some sort of LED indicator. On the second Paybook, which was fully functional, if I hadn't pressed that little round button by accident to turn on the device, I never would have figured out how to power it on because I attributed that round button as an indicator or something of that nature. I wouldn't have intentionally pressed it.
The Playbook is typical BB B.S. I had the same experience with my BB phone. I spent 90% of my time trying to find stuff on it than I did just using it. No wonder BB is in the crapper these days.
I went with a Transformer. I did some research too. I will say this that playing with a unit in the store and taking it home and using it for a week or two is a huge difference. I am sure you can make some basic decisions based on your likes and dislikes, To heavy dont like how it feels in your hand etc, but nothing takes the place of good ole fashioned "Use it". I wrote a pretty long article regarding my purchase and my decisions tree in the transformer forums, as there are a lot of "Can the Asus Transformer replace my netbook/laptop" threads on a lot of different forums and i wanted to put my thoughts out there as well. I will find the link and link it. But in short the basic answer is it depends. I know not the best answer and not the one you were looking for but its the truth.
Here is my post its long but might be worth a read if you are trying to decide

I am very happy with the transformer and in my post i give the reasons i chose it.
The Rahl
we have the xoom here. not sure how we like it yet. can't get it to root. or rather can't find a walkthrough that doesn't assume you already have certain things installed on your computer. not their fault. it's the xooms for me needing to root to actually use all it's features.
i have the galaxy 10.1 its so dirty i love it. slim, light, and fast
Apple suxxx but by the way, I prefer the iPad 2 !
I prefer the 7 inch tablet, but there aren't any good ones. The best 10 inch is the sammy sung tab 10.1.
It down right makes all the other tabs look like s**t. Samsung did a GREAT job on the screen. I like the feel of the thrive but it's screen sucks. The ipad seemed heavy but I do like its keyboard. The touchpad and playbook are the worst. the iconia is pretty ugly. The xoom feels nice but has a bad screen in my opinion. Tab 10.1 is best then xoom or ipad.

I am using Apple i pad. Its features processing speed durability awesome.
Some tablets are truly great in the niche such as Xoom, Transformer and Ironia, but seems that it's still no one is good enough to beat the iPad. At least for me, I have to admit the using experience is really fantastic on iPad.

Yeah, I agree. The iPad is a powerful and well engineered tablet. But it lacks the high res display I desire and this makes it tired for me. I'm spoiled by the Retina display of my iPhone 4. There just isn't a display as good as the Retina display. If Apple puts an equivalent display in the next iPad, that would solve the tired problem.
i am waiting samsung tab 10.1 or sony
I have the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 and it rocks, so fast and easy to use.
I bought my 8 yr. old daughter a Velocity Micro Cruz. I sent that same POS back 2 weeks later. She is only 8 so I'm not looking to spend mega bucks and I don't buy anything made by Apple. I am thinking of getting her the Gen 9 Archos 8in tablet when it arrives in a few months. The Cruz isn't a bad tablet for the price point but it simply has too little internal memory. It constantly froze on us. It is great looking hardware, nice looking screen and a little heavy. Also, not having the genuine Android Market or XDA-Dev support was a killer. I came to realize I have no love for Android in it's current state (2.3 and below as I haven't used or seen a Honeycomb tablet yet). As a long time Windows Mobile user Android still reminds me of an incomplete and immature version of Windows Mobile that is more popular but not more effective. I am disappointed in this realization, especially when 90% of the tablets out there worth their salt, hardware wise, are Android based.
To be fair, I actually played with my friend's IPad II also. When I say played with, I mean sat there and used it for 2-3 hours to see if it could impress me. The answer is no. It's a $600 POS. What's scary is the Velocity Mirco Cruz was $179 total and the $400 or so price difference really doesn't show when it comes to using the damn things. The Ipad was lighter, faster and didn't freeze (because it has enough damn internal memory), but like every other damn Apple product it is limited and constricted. I swear if the Cruz had more internal memory it would have been 200x more effective than that Apple pos. Transferring information was easier. Using it as a part of my current environment was easier (HD2, Windows 7 laptop, Windows Vista PC). When I used the Dolphin browser it worked excellent (as did Safari). Basically the only satisfying experience I had on the Ipad was the Youtube application and the only thing that made it better than what I get on my HD2 is the screen size. Beyond that it has nothing on my 2 year old phone. Apple smapple.
I don't expect the HP or BB tablets to last very long in this market so I'm hoping Microsoft comes out with a viable tablet OS (which is rumored) and it doesn't actually disappoint me the way everything else has. Knowing I won't be able to replace the Cruz for under $200 I upped the ante to $300 and it looks like Archos is going to slide in with the gen 9's. Hopefully I won't remain disappointed.

Your thoughts on Asus Padfone

I feel this is more of a general "lets get your opinion/feel" but ive experienced in the past, any topic that has any question in it, gets moved to this section.. So im posting it here.
I'd like to get people opinions (and experiences if any) on the Asus Padfone. I've been eyeing the HTC Amaze, but there have been a few issues reported with it, and with new tech being released this year, im also considering other devices. The Padfone caught my eye due to its apparent versatility. (Especially since the HTC One series has been a massive letdown with the non-existent mSD card slot)
Though there do seem to be some things lacking with this device, such as the camera (apparently, the HTC one has an independent processor which speeds it up) for example.
Also the fact that its 3g and not 4g/LTE seems to be a step back (tho this isnt an concern for me, but could be later).
Anyway.. Thoughts? Concerns?
Not worth buying
I'm considering getting one. I'm from the Netherlands so 3G is just fine for me!
Pricing is rumoured around €699 euro here, pretty steep though... That's without the dock (which will set you back another €150 I bet)
I love the idea of having everything in one place (on your phone) and basically click it into the tablet for typing during class or watching/reading something.
Jam it into the dock for longer writing sessions... I can see this being a very useful combination for me personally. I'm not sure the average user will find this a useful gadget though.
Downside is that you really have to use the phone all the time and I'm not sure how well everything works softwarewise when you load the phone into the dock, screensize wise etc, etc.
Its just that I got a Gnex that I love so dearly

Care to elaborate?
newbie thoughts on the padfone
Last July 2011, I posted this thread on another forum and look at what happened in the interim - the Padfone!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Looking for serious multi-purpose (non-existent yet) tablet
I am a newbie. I have been communicating with a variety of tech publications incl Walt Mossberg, WSJ. But no serious response. I do not own a tablet right now but want to propose features that can be incorporated to the current crop. You folks can chime in (with respect) if you think my ideas are plausible.
Full disclosure. Currently, I am not a fan of the crop of tablets in the market today. What is out there (regardless of brand) are just pure "gadgets" for me. I do not do social networking nor games. I realize that I am in the minority in the high-tech populace.
I will consider a tablet with the configuration below to trim my techie equipment inventory. I believe this would be a truly PORTABLE, POWERFUL, SINGLE COMBINATION alternative to having (1) a communication/convenience/entertainment" device (tablet) AND (2) a PC for serious professional computing work, should I need to do some.
Samsung Galaxy-like form factor (or maybe even slightly larger or heavier)
Full Cell phone call capable (CDMA/GSM) - 3 or 4G thru BT (either on ear device or car's BT wireless communicator) - not just Google Talk or Skype
Web-access wireless card (a/b/g/n)
BT enabled to pair with my car's BT audio system wireless connection to play music stored in the tablet and other BT capable devices (tech already available)
Semi-full size BT keyboard/case (tech already available)
Available USB2 or 3 port/s
Available docking device to connect to an external larger LCD monitor, full-size keyboard, printer, optical drive, external HD, etc (?) to really replace my office/home notebook
Enough processor power (Intel/AMD dual core or higher), storage to support a full PC OS (Windows 7/8 or Mac OS), Internet Browser (IE9, FF5, Chrome, Safari, etc) and APPLICATION PROGRAMS AND DATA!
Sufficient battery life (replaceable) with AC/DC charging/connectivity capability
???????
Do you think this config for a tablet system has market and production potential? Or better yet, is there one already out there? I know that the technology to accomplish all of these exist already. It just takes somebody to put it all together.
Your professional insights are greatly appreciated."

Since the Pf is not in our shores yet and I have been sick and tired of the all the unboxing, first videos from Barcelona, Taiwan specs and availability, I just implore ASUS to get their act together and stop the teasing and give us the US model! Regardless how a bunch of folks have trashed it, I on the other hand WANT ONE NOW. I realize that this desire is sight unseen, performance and quality unknown and not all the specs I listed above are in the model available everywhere else, I believe the concept of 3 in 1 is a brilliant one. I may not be as techie as you folks but for my use and from prelim videos and specs, what ASUS has done is phenomenal.
I would greatly appreciate your more techie input as well as marketing intel (US availaibility, specs, price, carrier, etc.). BTW, I still refuse to buy and do not want any of the tablets available today. Thanks.
The mechanism to insert the phone into the tablet looks like its the first thing to break rendering the whole concept useless.
But i have not hold it in my hand, anyone have some info on the build quality?

It's possible, it depends if the "door" needs to be closed before it will output to the tabdock. Plus, im sure alot said that about flip phones and sliding phone. My Touch Pro 2 is still going pretty strong, and it has a sliding keyboard.
Something id like it know is with the Keyboard dock, is it 'closeable'. As in, can you dock the tablet to it, then "close it" like a laptop so you can transport it as one piece?
first try... and probably last
very difficult positioning for Asus. They're trying desperately to innovate more that the competition to get a strong foot in that market.
However, this solution might not be fully interesting for a lot of people... If its a failure, they'll have lost a great deal of money that could have been used to make up for the difference with the latest ipad...
If this will be a failure , atleast the price will drop fast ( something like Evo 3d -50% )

Why do you think it will be a failure?
it's something new and different let's see how people will act after buying it
Has a lot of potential...
Has a LOT of potential if marketed correctly.
I have a original ASUS Transformer TF101 with keyboard dock for eight months now and I can say its an amazing machine. The performance is just right, the battery lasts forever, almost stock ICS, lots of updates.
I have the only combination of devices that can compete with the full Padfone setup: a modern smartphone (Samsung Galaxy Note) and the mentioned Transformer, with full tethering support. If the Padfone system can have a significant price advantage, the consistency it provides (the Note have Android 2.3.6) can make it a winner.
Feels way to expensive.
$1 gets you a reply
yes the hinge closes like a laptop
problem: the hinge only opens around 90 degrees so you won't get a great viewing angle unless you are at a similar level.
when the latch of the tablet station opens to release the phone, it stops the phone being bent outwards, so you have to pull up and thus, not breaking the connector.
not having 4g is a big downer for me. I was going to get this and might still but seriously, uk is getting 4g this year so I doubt I'd want this when it gets released.
The price of phone + 10" screen is Euro 699.
I think it will not be a success.
Why? (iPhone 4S + New iPad) is only Euro 199 more than the phone and a dummy screen.
Moreover, if you're going to carry around a dummy screen, why not carry a REAL tablet??

beeecause with a iphone and ipad, your data is in 2 places? So if you edit something on your ipad, you have to take steps to also update it on your iphone.. Plus, itunes.. thats always a disadvantage.
I see the appeal, and 200 bucks More isnt small.

I thought it's no need to take any steps? As long as your iPad is online at home, whatever you do on iPhone outside is automatically synced, as shown in the iCloud launching videos.
199 euro is small, when you compare a screen+ battery, with a fully functioned retina display iPad.
sounds good

Well, i wont get apple products. If i were to get two devices, both would be android. Im sure it would be similar, but i don't like messing with clouds either, that's just a gimik to eat up your limited "unlimited" data package. Especially when your talking about my case of 400+mb PDF files.
I'm not completely sold on it, but it seems like a good idea, plus ive not yet seen official pricing on it.
Not that benchmarks mean much.. but...
ASUS PadFone gets benchmarked: a mere teaser of what's to come
