The REAL Battery Issue.....Please stop with the random theory threads. - T-Mobile LG G2x

ctso said:
Battery life on your phone is probably fine. The problem lies in the driver LG wrote to talk to the battery and figure out the max capacity, discharge rate, current capacity, etc. They did a piss poor job of writing it, and working on CM7, I can say that it is horribly inaccurate. I've gone from 50% to 70% by just rebooting, charged a whole 20% in 2 minutes, etc.
DO NOT TAKE ANY BATTERY READINGS SERIOUSLY. I understand this sucks, but when you look at your phone and it says you have 40% battery, don't assume that to be true.
We are working on improving the battery driver for CM7, and it is getting slightly better, but still needs tons of work.
On the note of GsmDataConnectionTracker, it exists in froyo and gingerbread and is not something LG stuck in as bloatware. They added some additional debugging which is what you are seeing in logcat.
Skimming through the code (very quickly, mind you) it looks like GsmDataConnectionTracker is not your problem. All it does is keep track of data sent/received, communicates this back to the radio interface, sets up GSM data connections should they die, and is responsible for also keeping track of whether or not you are currently connected to an APN (thus the reason for constant polling).

This got buried for some reason, and everyone has continued to speculate. Can we please put this to rest now?

The problem is the post is incomplete.
To ensure you have the most accurate reading available (which I accept may not be 100% accurate) you must disconnect the phone from all power sources when it's booting.
The comment about in the rebooting change above indicates the OP doesn't realise this.
It's a workaround but it eliminates all of the big jumps (up or down) people experience when rebooting.

Thanks. I had a feeling these theories were just guessing anyways.

***Sign the Online Petition to get LG's Attention***

Credit to KeePeeR26 who posted the link in another thread. I think it deserves it's own thread and the mods should consider making it a sticky. I signed the petition and I was the 27th. If we all sign it maybe it'll get LG's attention when it's picked up by the blogs and media. The five of you that have phone's with no problems don't need to sign.

Most of the issues will be resolved with the update that is already is progress. Haven't you seen the gingerbread preview? Only thing it wouldn't fix is probably screen bleed.

And the Gingerbread update is being coded by the same LG experts that created the original O2X and G2X s/w. Allowing the O2X problems to carry over to a phone launched six months later doesn't give me a lot of confidence in LG. I really am hoping the 2.3.3 update makes the phone stable but indulge my skepticism until we actually get the ROM and see the improvements.
Seems to me they took the critics of the O2X to heart and switched to plain Android to prevent future criticism. They probably basically switched to Gingerbread development after that, meaning the G2X has the same buggy drivers that the O2X had.
"Our smartphone freezes and often reboots in a kind of loop. We can only remove and reinsert the battery to have a working phone again." is the main cause for the petition? Yeah that's definitely an issue I haven't had yet. Wifi knocking out 4G? Thats annoying as hell.
I havnt seen any issues other than screen bleed and some touch screen issues. Cm7 even at its infant state improved the overall feel of the phone and fixed the touch issues I was having. The biggest complaint I see are reboots and battery problems. Reboots are most likely hardware issues. You should return your phone. Battery issues are more often than not the fault of the user. I bet if you took a poll across the android phones on xda I would put battery issues as the number one issue for android.

Is It Me Or Is Everyone Nitpicking About This Phone?

There isn't a day that goes by that people dont complain about this phone. It seems that every since the bleeding issue has been addressed people have been finding the tiniest things to get mad about. Some things can be fixed through software fixes/roms and some things you just simply return the device for if you can't fix it yourself. Some things are just your imagination lol. The device in my opinion is doing good to be out for almost a month. Maybe I'm just tired of hearing people let the negative outweigh the positive. Honestly if you didn't want the issues you should have waited a couple months after the launch. This is the first phone I bought on the day it launched. I expected issues...nothing is perfect but with these roms coming out its starting to become a perfect device in my eyes. Once Faux123 cooks us a kernel there shouldn't be any complaints left.

Totally agree
Yes, what is even more annoying is that each "issue" has two dozen threads dedicated to it. Making it impossible for anyone to make any headway.
How about a single "battery issues and solutions" thread?
A single "LCD bleed" thread.
A single "random reboot" thread.
Can you imagine how much better this forum would be? Maybe the mods could merge threads and do this, but it's probably too far gone at this point to implement some organization.
Currently, every time someone has one of those issues, they start a whole new f-ing thread.

+1 everyone being WAY too picky.
100% of the people are under a FULL REFUND period still. Rather than b*tch and whine, return the thing and get something else. Why cause so much stress you have to whine on an online forum about it instead of just returning the thing for 100% your money back? Sounds like gluttony for punishment to me; would rather waste 5-10min complaining than rectify the situation and be done with it by getting something else. Tmobile has plenty of other good android phones.
The blacklight bleed is not that big an issue. Anyone running their backlight at 100% all of the time to complain about it has bigger issues like going 4 hours on a charge. No one should need to set the backlight at 100% for anything besides trying to kill your battery for some reason.
And if LG does fix the issue EVERYONE has a 1 year warranty on the phone despite the return period to swap it for a "fixed" one. There is absolutely nothing that warrants the dozens of threads about it blocking other meaningful discussions.

So far this has been the best Android device I have ever used and I have used many. Luckily I do not have a single problem with this phone. My WiFi works great and never fights with data. I get 30mbs download speeds and 10mbs upload speeds while on WiFi. I get 7mbs download and 2mbs upload on 4G. My GPS locks within 3 seconds and is accurate to 5 feet. I am running the stock software with the pre-dexopt patch using Launcher Pro and this phone flies through everything. It plays every game at high frame rates and Flash runs buttery smooth. I never thought I would use a Android phone that didn't lag but this phone hasn't lagged once. I can honestly say that I am extremely happy and in my opinion this is the best device available in the US right now. The only device that will dethrone it is the SGII which I will be getting and give the G2X to my wife. For those who think the Sensation will be better than the G2x.....HAHAHAHAHAHAH

This phone is far superior to my G1. As long as it just runs with no errors, I'm good.
.....or it could be that many of the first release devices had major issues and people have come to rely on the excellent folks here at XDA to help them. I know that many also moved from the HD2 to a full time android device and there has been growing pains.
I had a POS one, swapped it and am very happy now.
Thanks again to all great people here at XDA that have helped me make the adjustment from WM.
Reading is the key!
Just my personal opinion, but it does seem like they rushed out the 2.2 build. I worked as a sales rep for T-Mobile (today was my last day), so I had to see the dark side of the user experience more since people would come to me with troubleshooting issues. It just doesn't have the polish that I would expect from a 2.2 ROM. Most times it would fly, but occasionally it would hang when switching apps, be slow to respond, and sometimes outright crash for no reason. That said, almost all the stability issues I've had were fixed when I flashed the Gingerbread leak, and I didn't even wipe before flashing (I was naughty).
Seems to me like they intended to ship it with 2.3 but ran short on time. Instead they took the ROM they had for the O2x, got rid of their UI changes and hobbled it onto the G2x with the intention of updating it quickly. For that reason, I told the customers that came into my store with stability issues to wait for the update, but if it doesn't come before their return period is up (30 days here in California) to go ahead and return it. I fully expect that update to come before June 20th.

Rant
here's the kicker... You see, I'm a NEW android/smartphone user. This is my first smartphone. I came from using a razr just for phone calls, for the last 4+ yrs.
I thought the g2x is the next best thing to sliced bread. I love it. I got mine on the day it was launched, the first run of phones.. It has slight screen bleed.. so what. I would have never noticed it unless someone said something. I thought about returning the phone to get a different one because "heck, everyone else was complaining"... and I was like.. why would I do that? The phone works fine.. nothing wrong with it... and I'll probably get one that has more probs.
So I kept the phone. Battery life? As someone else said... on every single other forum where a new phone comes out... that's the #1 talked about topic. "Battery life sucks! Battery life sucks!" Now after talking to a few folks, do I see there is a problem for a few people.. absolutely. If you're phone has apps frozen, nothing running, you set it down on the table.. pick it up a cpl hours later and it has dropped 25%... ya, major problem. A few guys are seeing a drop down to a dead battery in 8hrs, with almost zero usage. A phone call or 2 and litearlly a few txt msgs. There is somethihng seriously wrong. BUT there are others that are using their phone all day long.. txting all day.. screwing battery usage with using ATK 30x a day, etc.. and they are complaining about battery life of 8hrs when they are using their phone like a computer. Stupid.
I have talked to multiple guys about their battery usage... they started off complaining... Then as we discussed in PMs... they admitted.. "Ya I guess I do use the phone a lot. I'm literally texting all day long." WTF!?!? Duhhhhhhhhhh
lol... I seriously believe that around 75% of the battery complaints are idiots using the crap out of their phone... and wondering what is going on...
/rant
I totally agree...way too much complaining. And I LOVE that we now have a thread for complaining about the complaint threads. I know, I'm twisty...but I love it.
I agree. I was just looking at the pictures posted in one of those other threads of the screen bleed. They are all mostly like mine. One, with a sqiggly line, did look really bad. But really, I do not see the bleed in everyday use. At all.( Edit: And I am a 100% brightness sorta guy) Someone was griping about how they can't see it in use, but boy when 2,3 comes out and that bar turns black....oh boy am I gonna be mad!! Wow.
Mine activated early yesterday morning. I am amazed at this thing...
I may totally regret saying this, but other than the screen bleed "issue", this thing has been perfect for me. Just lucky I guess.
No reboots, wifi seems to work perfect, great data speeds and clear crisp calls. So far. My call reception was awful on Metropcs.
Again I may regret saying this. I have seen a couple of posts where people say they started having issues after a week or so.
Am I the only one having a problem free experience?

Taking the risk of GB radiofor the sake of science.

Just talked to a friend from vzw, he told me that if something happened he will hook me up with a replacement for my tbolt.
I've been using gb radio since the 1st day it was leaked, i have no problems on my phone, just some random FCs but that's given.
Since we don't have a solid demographics on how many people got bricked, Im going to take the risk and see if i get bricked.
This morning i just got into a bootloop but looks like its just the battery giving false stats. Its been more than 6 hours now in my external charger and i assume battery doesn't hold charge anymore, Im going tommorow to vzw to have it replaced.
Question is, will logcat be enough to monitor my phone in case i got bricked so i can pull some important data regarding how it happen?, that way we can find a clue on how to fix a radio-bricked tbolt.

Lol you obviously didn't read his post. No risk involved.
I hope someone could shed a light to my questions.
1st. How does the radio firmware work on our phone? Does it work like a driver where it acts a mediator between the roms(software) to the phone's hardware.
2nd. What are the possible trigger to recreate the bootloop of death? There are some cases that my phone overheats because of non responsive apps and ever since i flashed on GB rom there i times i can feel my phone hot, which could be the case from some of the boot loop victim that they fried something inside their phone.
3rd. What are the chances that same bootloop of death could also occur in froyo radio? Just because vzw officially released the radio doesn't mean it has same risk like the leaked GB radio. It is like how HTC manufactured the phone, they tested most of it but some are still lemons.
Everything is in theory right now, there are no fix because it happens in random and the reason is still unknown. I'd choose to participate for the fix instead of waiting for someone to figure out the fix. We all do take a bold step in rooting our phone, flashing different roms, putting our faith on the battery that it wouldn't fail during the flashing process. Once we modified our phone from its stock settings we acknowledge the risk, and that risk is the one of the few factors the fuels the development of the rom/kernel community.
I've noticed several repacks of the GB radio:

right now im using das bamf 2.0-5 running on imoseyon_leanKernel_v2.5.4GBtest6
Im keeping a close watch on my temp running on "extreme settings" 1.4ghz extremely undervolt.
SetCPU profile set to minimum setting when temp goes more than 97F
I just called verizon 611. My phone is not bricked and still functioning properly, but i told the operator that my phone constantly reboots( I pretended that my phone was bricked), i was passed to higher level tier support and they said they will be sending a new phone to me and there will be an extra envelop where i need to put my old phone to return to them. The call only took me 10-15 minutes and I believe VZW is aware that Tbolt has this issue even if its GB or the stock froyo rom.
i reverted back last night but i will def be back once things are more stable.. i already miss it

Make sure your set on home only in the wireless settings. This usually solved all of my issues.
I usually also use roam control app to set on sprint only just as a backup plan haha. My tws went to zero and has stayed there since doing those two things. Ymmv though...

I believe it's not the time without signal but the time the phone is looking for signal. As far as I understand, when the phone is looking for signal it really sucks the battery juice. So I'm not sure if putting the phone to home only is going to solve it. But it's definitely got a lot to do with the radio they are having issues with. Give it some time and they'll get it updated. They already confirmed that they are working on a fix.
Thread cleaned. More flaming will result in an infraction or a ban.
I had a Nexus too, and in places where my Evo has 0% TWS (time without signal), the Nexus has 50%, and battery life is very short.
I think I tried Home only and the TWS stayed the same.

As you know very well (since you post the same stuff every day on multiple venues), the NS4G has problems with its radios. Whether they are hardware or software is unknown at present. They may or may not be solvable.
I repeat, the problems are *known*, and there is no point in having the same person repeat them every single day!
Didn't you say you were returning the phone anyways? Just go ahead and do it.
To the mods:
From his profile, Fixx is a member of long-standing and apparently has been helpful in the past. However, his current non-stop posts about NS4G signal problems have passed the threshold for spam. Yes, the problems are serious and real, but to post multiple times daily (under different guises) about the exact same problem is just spamming.

Wtf battery?? Make up your mind.

Ok so this is a first.. I just watched my battery jump from 69 to 41 when I unplugged it. Plugged it back in and then it jumped to 56, unplugged and then 42, now its at 54.
What.. the.. eff..
Any ideas? Running faux rom, oc at 1.2 Max.

Hey jackass, cut the useless sarcastic comments. Its people like you that need to stay the hell away from this forum. This is a Q&A area. Maybe you failed to read before entering.
But anyway. As I continue, I have never seen a jump like that is all. I know the drivers are useless, but its usually just a 1-3% decrease. Not a massive jump like I explained.
Was just trying to see if anyone saw this perticular type of problem.
Just wiped battstats, we'll see if that fixes it.
Wiping won't fix it. There is no fix until LG releases better battery drivers.
Lucky you, my phone doesn't like to charge when it's completely off anymore. Shut it off with 45%, put it into the charger overnight, wake up in the morning... hey look my phone is on 45% still.

Actually suprah, none of those explained the jump that I mentioned. What I explained was quite specific. I understand the drivers are not communicating properly, I'm pretty sure everyone knows that. But I haven't seen a jump from such extremes within 30 seconds. Find me a post on that.
Otherwise your just an egocentric prick that has no useful insight and only feels the need to ***** and moan. You just might need to stay away from q&a all together.

I'm guessing you don't read. If you did you would know lg ****ed up the battery drivers and every rom for this device has Incorrect battery readings. Reboot phone for correct battery readings
Use the search button next time

It's never that serious to come into a question and answer thread being a douche. Not in a good mood? Don't reply.
