Is this as simple as making a jpeg and putting it into the correct folder? I don't need an animated gif - what format it will accept?
I wanted to make something that says 'Phone is Property of XXXX - please call XXXXX if lost'.
Any suggestions would be appreciated, thank you!

That is for AOSP builds that use the images in the assets/images folder in framework-res.apk.
If your phone uses Sense then it runs the boot animation from /system/media/bootscreen. All you have to do is replace the image in there (I think it's called boot1.gif) with another image with the same name or you can use a .jpg (which would probably be better if you want a static image) and just open up the boot_animation.xml and change the image attribute to "/system/media/bootscreen/your_file_name.jpg"
I've never tried it (the .jpg method) but theoretically it would work.
Do a Nandroid, try it out, if it doesn't work then nandroid restore.
Let me give you a friendly warning about messing with the boot screen:
I messed with mine for a few hours - I loaded a file it didn't like - wouldn't boot - couldn't get into recovery or fast boot it hung at the first HTC logo. I had to RUU to fix it. Bizzzzzzzare
Hi , currently on cm6 Mioze's rom and flashed dark froyo theme , I wonder if it safe if I change this boot animation ? Also what about this (post 124) ? So I just drop the file to replace the old boot animation by using root explorer ? Or I should boot to open recovery and get to somewhere to flash it ? Very much thanks !
Easiest (and lowest possibility to mess things up) way I have found to swap out boot animations is to drop the new one in /data/local and set your permissions correctly and leave your current one where it is. That way you don't have to pull out your pre-existing boot animation and it will stay preserved.
Current would be /system/media/bootanimation.zip
New one that you want to see work would be
/data/local/bootanimation.zip
ps- thanks for the link to those. They look pretty sweet and I will download a few myself.
Edit:::I can't get any of those boot animations to download. It wants me to sign up for file sharing site, Minus. If you can get them can you re-upload them.
Edit2:::thanks to eSu.matix. for reuploading them for me.

Thanks for your reply !! And sorry for my late reply ... do you mean I just have to drop the new boot animation to /data/local/bootanimation.zip ? Instead of replacing the current one ? Then which boot animation will it boot , won't the phone mess up since there is 2 boot animation ? Btw , which boot animation did you choosed ? Does it works ? Thanks very much !
Yep just drop you new boot animation into /data/local and don't forget to set your permissions. The one in /data/local will take precedence over /system/media. Don't like your new one? Just delete it and your original will be the default like nothing ever happened.
I do it all the time. Sometimes I do it to my wife's phone just to mess with her.
Don't forget to set your permissions or it won't work.
thank you very much .
For starters I've been trying to change my boot animation, something I put together myself. Tool used to swap the repacked bootanimation.zip was Root Explorer and I do have Superuser/ root permissions and it all appeared to swap over without fuss but somehow doesn't show booting the phone. While I successfully killed off the old animation. mine is not appearing. The bootanimation file being used is .pngs with the original file structure, all I did was overwrite existing ones on my pc with my preferred images so no need to overwrite the existing desc.txt file. Any suggestions on where I boofed things?
The shutdown animation I can't find, browsed the system/media and data folders without joy. Could any of the learned members here be able to direct me to where the shutdown animation is hiding as I so hate telco provider logos left on phones not tied to contracts?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
This little tool did the trick for the boot animation and should work for the shutdown animation when I find the little sod.

Shut down animation is in the power off apk I believe I made it black and white in my theme back in the day
Thanks for the tip there Samno, looks I'm off googling now to see how to recompile Apks.
You can just drag and drop in winrar just don't change the compression settings should work as long as there named the same and in the right format, won't hurt for you to learn though
Learning by my errors by the looks of things, unpacked and repacked with Winrar and a rename to apk utility found here after doing my file swap and now getting reboots instead of shutdowns.
I should have kept an eye on this thread before charging off like a nutter.
Thanks again Samnos.
Sorted the reboot issues as I hadn't dumped off the original APK and just edited the archive to replace my ingloriously modified version..
[NOTE]. I Will not be responsible for malfunction of your phone or anything else but if you encounter any problem I will be there.
Boot animation makes an Android Phone Beautiful. It gives the first glance of the Phone but due to some reasons we want to change the boot animation or we want to get rid of it. To change the boot animation you need the following things:
i. Root-Access
ii. BootAnimation.zip (You can download the zip file, just Google it)
To change the bootanimation just follow the given steps:
STEP1. Download the booanimation.zip file from the internet
STEP2. Go to the System\Media location of your Phone's memory and delete the bootanimation.zip file
STEP3. Move the boot animation file you have downloaded to System\Media (don't change the name of the name of the file retain it to bootanination.zip)
STEP4. Restart your phone and Voila you have the changed bootanimation.
You can change the boot animation to that of the One Plus One, Google Generic, Samsung or of LG smartphone
If this post help you, please give me a thank
Hi,
I have tried all methods mentioned here to change the boot animation but it did not work , please help
Hi there and welcome to Assist,
Your device must be rooted for this change. Try this:
You will need a file manager app with Root access. Use Root Browser app or any other file manager.
Download a custom boot animation you want to use by choosing the animation you want to use and downloading the associated bootanimation.zip file.
Open Root Browser (or your file manager) app and once inside, locate your original boot animation file (bootanimation.zip) in /system/media.
Long-press the file, choose Rename and name it to bootanimation.zip1.
Browse to the custom boot animation that you want to switch to, copy the zip file to /system/media. Long-press, choose Permission.
Tick the boxes as shown in the screenshot below, and press OK. After that, rename the file to bootanimation.zip, if the zip file name is different.
You have to make sure that the file name is correct (bootanimation.zip) for the system to recognize your boot animation, and boot properly.
Now you should be able to see two zip files, one, bootanimation.zip (new file) and the other is bootanimation.zip1 (original).
Note: If you ever want to switch back to your original boot animation, delete the current bootanimation.zip and rename the original file back to bootanimation.zip (from bootanimation.zip1).
Reboot the device and you will be able to see your new custom boot animation!
You'll have to create an account to post in the main forums if you have any other questions.
Good luck
