[Q] Are radio frequencies hardware based? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Noob question sorry. My buddy has a GT-I9020T (900mhz?) running on wind, he wants to change service providers to rogers (850mhz?). If i were to root his phone and flash the rogers radio onto it, would he be able to connect to the rogers network with a rogers sim? afaik the answer is no but i just want to verify before i give him incorrect information.

No the radio is also hardware based but from what I understand you'll be able to get 2G {Edge} on rogers but not 3G and on Bell and Telus it won't work at all

That is correct, you will be able to connect to Rogers using GSM and only with 2g speeds. Forget about connecting with any network that strictly uses HSDPA like Koodo, as it will not work (not sure if Telus is the same). I've tested this myself - had to get rid of my i9020T because around my house Wind had a dead spot -_-

like the guys said, the frequencies are hardware based, so there is nothing you can do to change them. rooting won't help. you'd need to buy a whole new nexus s that has the correct frequencies for the Rogers network 3g bands.

[Q] Need Phones that work on Rogers 3G Network!

hey everybody. if this question is in the wrong place, mods/admins please move to correct thread section.
i am i need of phones that will work on the Rogers hspa 3g network in canada. i right now have a tmobile hd2 running android 2.3 and i got my wife a tmobile mytouch 3g running android 2.2. but from the information i found we will not get the 3g band because the phones 3g frequencies are wrong. can anybody help me confirm that? we right now use them but they are only on the 2g band and our reception is pretty terrible right now. if that is the case can anybody tell me if at&t phones operate 3g on the right frequency for rogers? thanks allot.
im specifically wanting to know if the Samsung Captivate S will work on rogers 3g. thanks!(but if somebody can tell me if most at&t 3g phones will work on rogers that would be greatly appreciated. thanks!)
chk Nexus S
Check out Nexus S ...might be available soon in canada for rogers
yeah the nexus s looks nice, but i still need to know if at&t and rogers operate on the same 3g band. because the tmobile phones we have do not work on the rogers 3g.....

[Q] Will this work on Bell Mobility?

I know this sounds like an utter newb question but Bell and all the resources I've checked are very ambiguous as to which bands it supports. I haven't been with them for a while and the resources online about Bell's network are ancient and unreliable. Just can't get a straight answer.
If so, I'm highly interested in getting a Sensation. Anyone wanna trade for an AT&T Atrix?
Unfortunately, it wont. Just like AT&T/Rogers, Bell uses 850/1900 frequencies for 3g, and this phone uses 1700/AWS. And for 2g, correct me if I'm wrong, but Bell uses CDMA technology for 2g, while AT&T, Rogers, And T-mobile use GSM for 2g, and this phone is a GSM phone.
This phone would work on Rogers, but from what I understand, it won't work on Telus or Bell.

Thank you. I thought I read something about Bell having rights to the 1700/AWS band but that it may only be used for their 2G network. So little accurate information about our ****ty Canadian providers.
I have two Atrix's because of an issue I had with the first one, but it's fixed now. AT&T and Bell Atrix.... maybe I'll switch back to Rogers and just foot the ETF. I don't know...

which nexus s

Hello
I apologize now, i have searched but maybe im looking for the wrong answer
I have just bought a nexus s and rooted it via a great guide on here that works for all nexus s's the only problem i am having is now trying to find out what model i have as i bought it off ebay.
under the battery it says GT I9020
but with the A and T available i dunno which one i have.
I will provide more info if required but i dunno which one i have so i can flash the more up to date OTA (ie 2.3.5 + 6)
I apologize again and thank you for help in advance
Regards
Matt
Which carrier, can use 3G?
If ATT and 3G - a
ATT and no 3G - t
TMo 3G - t
TMo no 3G - a
Compare frequencies from your carrier with ATT/TMo if not in US.

ok so as i see it someone correct me if i am wrong
i have 3 g but i am in uk so
AT&T 3G = 850/1900Mhz
TMobile 3G = 1700/2100Mhz
I am on Three UK and they support 850/2100Mhz
Mock me if i am wrong but i am still confused to which model i have an A or a T
:-(
Check gsmarena.com
Att has 850-1900-2100
Tmo has 900-1700-2100
I hope this helps.
Can u take a picture of the model number in the back. Out of curiosity I wanna see how did that happen
Still both networks support 3G 2100Mhz and after checking what aerial mast is in my area with the network you guessed it its a 2100Mhz so i still have no idea on which model number i have :-(
someone give me a clue!
You have the at&t model. Even though they both have 2100mhz, Tmobile uses there 2100mhz specifically for the upload portion of HSPA+ while the 1700mhz is used specifically for the download portion, without both bands then your phone (any HSPA phone) will not register with Tmobile 3/4G network.

Our phone... is amazing.

I was stalking the T-Mo SGSII forums when I saw this..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1417095
According to that, their phone has an LTE radio... which means even the radios between our phones are the same..
I did some research, and I learned that our Skyrocket is a pentaband phone.
HSPA+: 850, 900, 1700, 1900, 2100.
And having 6 LTE bands....
This is probably the best radio made by Qualcomm... ever.
But I thought the Exynos chip could not support LTE? Only the Snapdragon..
Both phones have snapdragon processors.

Wait.. whaaa? This is the first I've heard of this, but doing a check on phonearena, it looks like it has supports the 1700 band. Has anyone tried this phone on T-Mo?
Lately, I've been thinking of selling the phone and going T-Mo b/c their plans are so cheap.

This is the info I got from phonearena. Most gsm bands are the same from the Tmobile sgs2 and the a&t skyrocket.does this mean if I unlocked my skyrocket I could use t mobile pre paid internet and voice plans.I currently have a AT&T 50$ unlimited pay as you go, but can't get Web (internet because it's a smartphone) has anyone tried using there skyrocket on Tmobile hspa+ network?

Yes, our T-Mobile Galaxy S II people are trying to see if we can activate the LTE radio on our device by flashing your modem.
If you are interested you can try flashing our modem to see if your phone can use AWS (1700) on T-Mobile / Mobilicity / Wind.
Our modem is here: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/11883-odin-tmo-sgsii-modem-collection-team-kang12142011/
Note that after flashing our modem your phone will lose LTE. After you are done testing you can flash back your own modem which is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1384865

Someone on the original thread was able to flash a T-Mobile radio and get Wind 3g signal (which is AWS) so looks like the radios are the same... anyone else want to try flashing a T-Mobile radio to see if T-Mobile 3g/4g (idk what they call it ) or Wind Home zone/Mobilicity 3G (non-roaming) works?
I've been following both threads and it sounds like Telus/TMobile radios does work on our LTE device? I'm travelling to Orlando later this month and would love to use their 3g data prepaid plan instead of 2g data.
It sounds like all I have to do is flash the Telus radio before I leave and I should be able to use Tmobile's 3g network? Then when I get back, flash it back to the Rogers radio so I get LTE back? Does that sound right? Thanks!

What radio do I need to flash for t-mobile hspa?
TPC has radio thread in dev forum and da_g has posted t989 radio plus mr.x has radio thread over at t989 dev forum so you can install them after flashing rom.

It is indeed amazing. Flashed juggernaught and the T-Mobile radio. Getting 4g with no issues.
Plus it even thinks my phone is the T-Mobile version. Wifi calling might even be supported!

I've been doing some research... the MDM9200 (modem in the Skyrocket) has LTE (Band 17 and Band 4, I also found a device with Band 13 but not sure if it's included in the SkyRocket) and it has HSPA+ Release 8, which means DC-HSPA. This means the by flashing a Telus/T-Mobile radio, you could theoretically get the same speeds that the SGH-T989(D) gets. I also found an MDM9200 device that states it has HSPA+ 850/900/1700/1900/2100 so that means that this modem can handle a LOT of bands, it just depends on which radio you flash.
Alright so I got my Skyrocket and flashed the latest T-Mobile Modem. AWS HSPA+ works perfectly fine, voice quality is actually much better than it was on my Hercules. I restored my setup from my Hercules and just changed the TDJ kernel to Da_G (waiting for them to make a kernel for the Skyrocket).
So that settles that once and for all. This phone has HSPA+ 850/1700/1900/2100 (and it's DC-HSPA so the max 42mbps is enabled if you flash a T-Mobile/Telus radio). It also has LTE 1700/700 with the 700 being band 17. I'm really hoping Wind gets the lower B or C block so I won't have to switch phones if/when they deploy LTE.
The Skyrocket has everything the Hercules has, with just MDM9200 over the MDM8200 in the Hercules. If you google online, the MDM9200 is like the MDM8200 just with LTE on top.
Once again, this phone is in fact amazing lol
Guess I should change my username if i could lol "SGS2LTE"

glad to hear it worked out man, lot of people shy away from the skyrocket because they think it won't work!

[Q] Getting SHW-M200K to work with the bell network

I have the SHW-m200k and was wondering if I could somehow get it to work with the bell network, which uses UMTS 850/1900MHz. I'm not sure what frequency the m200k is designed to work on, but I'm pretty sure the Korean providers use 2100MHz frequency.
I've tried using the bell sim card on the phone, but it wasn't able to connect to the network (emergency calls only).
If I root the phone, unlock it, and install a new radio, would it be possible to get it to work on the bell network?
No you can't change the frequencies so no matter what you can't use it if it's different

I'm assuming that the K is the SK Telecom version?
Try it with Rogers/Fido. Don't subscribe to their service until you try, just go to a store and ask to test a sim card in the store. I think that will work for you.
