When i enable the GPS toggle on my phone,
Is it really work always ? Do i really need to toggle it off when i don't use it?
Or
It not really active, just ready to be active when needed...
So if it like that i don't really need to toggle it off always.
You see, i think its not like WIFI and Bluetooth that really active when they are on.
Because when you really use GPS you see it at the notification bar ..
Hope you understand what i want to know ..
Get battery snap from the market then run a test over time. If it doesn't affect battery life I tend to not worry...

From what I've heard and read it seems that the GPS really won't drain battery unless an App is using it. So if you aren't in Navigation or Maps or something that wants to use the GPS then the idea is that it won't drain your battery.
I'm not 100% certain, this is just what I've read, and to some extent experienced.
It really drain my battery when its enable.
I switched it off, but now I'm worried that when i will lost my phone i can't track it down with GPS location... (loockout secuirty app)
Any advice ?

So i was doing some messing around and i found that on my phone if i leave data enabled i get ridiculous battery drain while using the phone. Just enabling data and downloading an app of the market dropped me 3%. now if i have 3g data off i get maybe 1-3% drain per hour while using the phone. maybe its just me but i think its 3g data thats draining our battery more then it is the super amoled display.
Yes, 3g data drains the battery. Use the power control widget to turn that, and GPS, off while your not using it. Your battery life will be much better at the expense of things like weather widgets not updating and contacts not syncing.
Now, does this really need to be in the development section??? Come on man, post in general or Q/A or somewhere where it would make sense to post!!!

FYI the power control widget does not have the option to disable 3g data

Yes i know it drains battery but this seems to be excessive compared to other phones ive had (palm pre,htc hero, tmobile g1). Also if there was a Q/A section i would of put it there hehe maybe we can get a mod to make one.

where can i turn off 3g?
I noticed the same thing with my phone. It seem when u do anything regarding the 3G your battery gets murdered. Yesterday i was noticing a 10% an hour battery drain with very little use. Over 5 hours i probably sent/received 4 or 5 text and talked for 4 minutes. Today using Juice Defender i noticed much better performance. Maybe only 4% drain with the same amount of usage.
Hopefully this gets addressed by either samsung or the amazing devs around here.

awesome glad im not the only one with excessive drain from 3g
So how do you disable 3g manually?
I recommend Power Control Plus from the Market.
It allows you to make power widgets including 3G data, SD Card Scan, and a working flashlight app!

Those battery life numbers dont look good...
Geez, I just looked at that battery review. The review does look bad. I get pretty good battery life on my phone. 10+ hours yesterday with heavy media streaming, talk time, playing games & browsing the internet.
Power Control doesnt work for our phones(at least for me), failing to control 4G & 3G.. something is amiss.. doesnt even notice that i have 4G hardware
Try juice defender, turns off data whenever u shut the screen

Isnt there a serious delay when restarting 3G on that setting?.. not only that.. but everytime my screen is on, i dont want 3G running, sometimes im gaming, or doing other none internet related things.
Is there a 3G on demand button in juice or ultimate juice? ie.. only waking if prompted by a service needing the net?

Hello, my GPS keeps continually running when I have it turned on. It never turns off in the status bar and keeps rotating just like it does when you are using it for GPS related activities. Is this an easy fix? When I turn the GPS off manually, this stops. Thanks
If it is on, then it is on. If it is off, then it is off.

I understand that. But after I flashed it again, the GPS continually runs. Not just when an app is using it but ALL the time. It drains the battery quite fast. On 2.1 and 2.2 (1st flash) I never had the problem. I would imagine there is something going on.

If you turned it on it will constantly run and search for satellites because it works in real-time. If you are inside say it has to work harder and constantly search for those satellites because it cannot find then as easily. so it may drain your battery quicker. Your best bet if its really killing your battery is to turn it off until you plan on using it. I personally have my gps on all the time now and dont see much of a difference. Not saying that you aren't having issues, beside I believe you on that. Also are you trying to say that your GPS is on even when you turn it off? That would be an issue. But if its just working in the background that is to be expected. Like I said try turning it off if you dont plan on using it to see if that helps your batt life. If not then you will learn if it's GPS or another app our 2. Also some people have had better battery life on 2.1 and some on 2.2. I personally think that the differences are entirely based on usage and your apps and widgets.
Lol sorry then, I thought you meant like "I turned my GPS on and now it is on, what do I do"

Just got my Nexus S a few hours ago and would like to make use of it's one unique feature: NFC capabilities (with the NFC Task Launcher by krohnjw).
However, using NFC would be much more of a hassle if you had to manually toggle it on every time you were to use it, so my question here is simple:
How much battery is estimated to be consumed if we leave NFC on indefinitely? I'd assume less than leaving BT or GPS on but an estimation by anyone who has any data would be much appreciated.
I can stand maybe 1% extra an hour but anymore than that would be inefficient to the point where it would eliminate any advantages of using NFC at all. I value battery life highly.
None, it has never shown up on the list of what has been using the battery before and I have had this phone since release. I would only imagine it would only use battery whilst in use.
Hope this helps.

Yep, like GPS only using battery when in use.
That is awesome. Thanks guys.

Almost none, you'll see maybe 1-2% in 10-12 hours difference from what I've tested for an idle nfc radio.

How does the NFC tag reader know to turn on? GPS is turned on by apps that want to use it. What's turning the NFC reader on and off?

As almost everything in Android, even teh NFC reader is an app, so it's a background task until a tag is close.

The radio still must be active to cause the passive tag to fire though. Fortunately this consumes very little power.

I didn't even know gps doesn't consume power when its not "requested". You mean I can turn it on and just forget about it? When I'm not using google maps or iGO it won't consume any battery? Really?

In theory, yes. But there are times when the GPS could be working in the background; such as using your location during a search result or location requesting apps such as Twitter.
That's why many people just leave it off as toggling the occasional GPS isn't much of a hassle (unless you use GPS a lot).

Can check it in the normal battery use graph, there's a line for "gps active".
NFC is turned on only when the screen is on. It will be negligible (especially when compared to how much battery the screen itself uses when on).
Hello, everyone. I have a Photon Q and I LOVE it except for the fact that I go to work with it fully charged and by the time I get out of work, I'm out of battery.
So tell me, forum, what settings have you tweaked to get optimal battery performance?
I turn off wifi, bt, gps, and sync. I am on a factory floor for 12-13 hrs a day & I generally have over 50% left at the end of the day w moderate use.
If you are in an area w poor reception might help to turn off mobile data, or put it in airplane mode temporarily.

+1 on this. I agree with saint. I turn off mobile data and syncing until I need it. I talk on the phone for almost 6 hrs a day and the battery still lasts about 19hrs.

I don't disable syncing completely, but I have the Green Power Premium app and have it set to turn data on and sync once every hour or so.
I leave data on, but i turn auto syncing off. bt/wifi/gps are all off as well. I also have it set to underclock when my screen is off.
Check your brightness settings as well. I dont typically leave it on auto because that's a lot higher than i need it to be. Check your battery usage and see what's using the most and it'll help you determine what you need to check.

For me, in 'battery usage' it's almost always 60% screen usage. I'm on auto, I guess I'll try some lower screen settings to see if I can improve that...

Agreed, I keep mine roughly around 10-15% which is fine for me...the only caveat is I have a Smart Action rule to bump it to 100% when in the vehicle dock (mainly because of daytime issues with glare/sun/etc where I need it to be higher, but its getting charged at the same time so its fine then).
I notice a big difference if I stay logged out of facebook. And I cant really give specifics on this, but I have noticed that after installing certain apps, my battery will start draining faster, so I uninstall those if that happens. Also take it off of LTE mode so it is on CDMA only, unless you are sitting in an area where it stays connected to 4g already. I get the best battery life out of my phone when I have a verizon PRL loaded so that its not looking for any other signal but the one I tell it to. Of course you cant do that all the time, I am just giving an example of how much better battery is if the phone isnt looking for something that you know it cant get where you are. Try to think of apps like facebook though that are always checking online for updates. Email programs, and programs like I mentioned that drain the battery, for whatever reason that may be.
Facebook is a hog, and there are so many different things that will auto update or notify you about, I spent a good 30 minutes going through the options looking for all the settings so I could turn them off.

I havent messed with any PRLs yet, but i get a strong signal where I'm at. Home and at work for the most part actually. Its crazy cuz my signal strength is a lot better than on my last phone, which likely has to do with the radios. We have plenty of WIMAX coverage around here, but no LTE yet, so I just keep it on CDMA and roll with that.
Found this on the portal, might help w auto brightness: http://velisthoughts.blogspot.com/2012/10/velis-auto-brightness-manual.html?m=1

Does the hotword detection of google now always on or NFC checked on or LTE vs HSAP+ (while connected to wifi or not) or leaving wifi on even when not connected (like when out and about and not at home) affect the battery in a significant way?
Sorry if this is a stupid question I just wanted to clarify because Ive heard various conflicting things on some of these.
Thanks for any help to this question and if anyone has tested any of these and can give there feedback I'm sure it would be greatly appreciated!
LTE if you don't have a great signal will use significantly more battery then HSPA.
Hot word detection on will use a little battery but should only do so when the screen is on.

All of those things will use more battery. I've turned off NFC and hotword detection because I don't really use them. To be honest, I still couldn't tell you if it makes a significant difference, but I'm happy with battery life.
Location settings off, NFC Off, LTE off when not needed, connect to wifi whenever possible, Lux auto brightness app, Battery doctor app, and install a custom kernel. That should help you out a lot with battery life.
NFC and hotword detection make such a negligible effect on battery life.

I want location settings on with google now I dont want to cripple my phone completely or have to be switching things on and off constantly. But I will probably be switching off LTE for HSPA cause I seem to be getting a better signal and NFC off cause I dont really use it. I already have franco installed which I know will only improve in time!
How about Lux is it a low power process running in the background and do the savings outweigh that? and do you have the free or premium version?
