I went to account setting and tried to both delete the "signature" and uncheck including it. Changes do not stick.
I changes permissions on the APK in system (they stuck), repeated above - same result. Rebooted and tried again - no luck. Tried searching for the text with Root Explorer - also no luck.
I could try deleting the app and installing another version, but since it is in /system, reluctant to do that - have had issues doing that in the past.
Extremely annoying and am reluctant to send emails with it still there. Looking for suggestions.
I'll be toying with this later as well. Its quite annoying especially with an exchange account.
Please search for this on the forums. I posted the same issue and someone posted a apk to fix it. I did it and it works.

I did search, and already downloaded a Froyo 2.2 EMail apk. I did not see any specific instillation instructions - so want to be sure I don't mess up the ROM (although I already have a nandriod).
I had already installed(app) a different Email app this phone (for another issue). It worked, but would not not keep email marked as read unless I fully opened them (simply checking and selecting "mark read" did not stick).
So was wondering if there is a specific flashing procedure I should follow (like deleting the app in system, inserting new one, and reboot). Again - reluctant to mess with /system directly.

Thanks I am rooted, but I think I just flashed over the existing app and some "noise" must have carried over. Did it the way in the other thread and it worked OK
Attached is the actual Email.apk (so your not going through 3 different forums)
Download it to your SD Card
Using Root Explorer:
Navigate to /system/app
Press and hold "Email.apk" and select rename from menu.
Rename it "Email.apk.bak", confirm.
Navigate to /sdcard/_ExternalSD
Press and hold new "Email.apk" and select copy from menu.
Navigate back to /system/app and select "Paste" from the bottom button.
Click on the new "Email.apk" and choose to install it.
Setup Email, set Signature, give me a "Thanks", and drink a beer... you deserved it.

When I go to rename the file, it says ""Email.apk" not renamed". Now what do I do?
Thanks.
Try ending the task first. Are you rooted?
Go into settings>applications>manage applications, find Email, Clear Cache
Do this before renaming and pasting the new one over. Rebooting after clearing cache, might help too.
not sure why, but the downloaded email app cannot set up MS Exchange account? Am I missing something here? Thanks for the help.
found how to do it. has to choose manual setup

I cleared the cache and rebooted and its still not working. I cannot rename the file. I also cannot even see any files in my SD card when I use the Rooted explorer. I don't know what's going on. I was sure that I rooted the phone correctly. I followed all of the rooting instructions. It went smoothly. Is there a way I can check if I rooted my phone correctly?

Thanks.
I use Enhanced E-Mail from the Market. It's an overlay for the existing e-mail client not a replacement like TouchDown (TD flattens the databases screwing up my contacts via Bluetooth). It's $9.99 and will allow you to change your signature (plus provides a ton of useful features). I know you shouldn't have to buy a third party product and T-Mobile's stupid for locking the signature on the phone but your sanity may be worth $9.99.

So, I put together a couple of flashable zips for use on a stock phone. I've been using these for a little while now, and feel comfortable enough about them working to share.
Basically it just removes a bunch of stuff that comes pre-installed on your phone, and replaces your stock Sense launcher with either the stock Gingerbread launcher or Go Launcher EX.
I personally like GO the best out of all the launchers available, but until I had this phone I didn't have a piece of hardware capable of using GO to it's fullest. Now that I can, I love it.
Special thanks goes out to:
Undeadk9 for compiling the stock Gingerbread apps from Google.
computerkid23 for letting me use his update-binary file & market version.
*These mods are mostly just working examples. Someone will probably find them useful, I do, but they were primarily posted to support my info thread on edify scripting notes.
*We can see that these actions can be accomplished in a small enough file to be posted to the board as an attachment, yet this also means we rely on the user's stock software being intact.
*If someone has already removed an app, these zips will not replace them. Exception being launcher, calculator, music and if Mod02 then the market as well.
*If something has already been deleted, then it just gets ignored when the script gets to it. It won't throw an error if it tries to delete something that's not there.
On to the description of what's being done:
Here's what's removed:
-Themes, Live wallpapers
-Widgets:
Both tips widgets, all the widgets that don't work when you stop using the sense launcher.
Calculator, calendar, mail, photogrid, photo widget, setup widget and weather widget.
-Following apps:
AppSharing, Adobe Reader, Android Notes, Bejeweled, doubletwist, Flickr, Friendstream, Facebook, Picasa, Netflix, Slacker Radio, Swype, Twitter, Zinio.
-And:
Mail, Media Room, HTC Setup Wizard, Car Home, HTC Music + Enhancer, Google quick search box.
-Also:
T-Mobile TV, Name ID, App-Pack, Mobile Backup, T-Mobile Carbon Backup, Qik (video chat), Tmobile Navigator.
Click to collapse
What's replaced:
-Calculator...broken stock calculator replaced with the gingerbread calculator.
-Music - replaced with the stock gingerbread music app.
Click to collapse
The only difference between the two flashable zips:
In Mod 01:
-Sense launcher replaced with the stock Gingerbread launcher...keeps the stock market.
In Mod 02:
-Sense launcher replaced with GO Launcher EX, computerkid23 market replaces the stock version.
You still keep the T-Mobile "My account" app, the stock weather app, and a handful of other thngs:
-Calendar, Camera, Clock, Contacts, Flashlight, FM Radio, Gallery, GMail, Messages, Phone, polaris Office, Quick Lookup, Voice recorder and search, Weather, Wifi calling, wifi hotspot and youtube.
All stock TV connection software is still good and ready, as well as the stock browser.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Pre-requisits:
-Stock phone, no custom ROMs
-Clockworkmod 4.0.0.9
-Clockworkmod backup of your phone before flashing this zip
-Backup of any user data, such as phone numbers or notes
-Fully charged battery.
-Download and put in the main directory of your sdcard:
+ Blue6IX_Mod01 -or- Blue6IX_Mod02
To install:
-Un-plug the phone from any chargers or cables
-Reboot to recovery
-Select 'install zip from sdcard'
-Select 'choose zip from sdcard'
-Select 'Blue6IX_Mod01.zip' (( or Mod02 if thats what you downloaded ))
-Select 'Yes - Install Blue6IX_Mod01.zip'
-Press the hardware back button to get back to the main CWM menu
-Select 'reboot system now'
-IMPORTANT LAST STEP:
-Leave the phone alone for 5 minutes after it finishes booting up. Don't play with it or make it do anything, just let it sit and settle.
It's still building the data partition and re-writing your cache memory, if you play with it before this finishes you could get errors down the line. You won't see all this happening, so just be patient and wait a few minutes.
...and that's it. All done.
-ONE LAST NOTE:
* The clockworkmod backup of your data is important, as this installation file will simulate a factory reset during it's execution. This means any data that's on the phone will be wiped clean, so if you don't back it up before you start you will lose it.
Enjoy!
Reserved in case I need it.
Meantime, i'd like to say thank you to all the people working so hard to develop ROMs and software for our phone.
Thanks!

Anyway I thought now Im root Id try to remove and re install. So used root explorer to delete the talk.apk from system/app.
Then I rebooted hoping I would see talk on market - but no. So I downloaded talk from within a gapps addon (someone posted in our forum to use talk from here gapps-gb-20110503-signed) which I did.
However when I try to install, I get 'Application not installed'
Any help please?

I like to know things, just to know how they are done too - so I can appreciate the sentiment of wanting to know even if just for being curious.
I don't like having google talk on my phone either - but you will find that you need it to show certain apps in the google market.
You mentioned you had root explorer, which is awesome. If there was one tool you needed to pay for to really work with your phone on your phone, that is it.
Since I know you can follow along, let's look at what it takes to get rid of Gtalk.
First you have to know what the .apk file is, if it has an .odex file, and where the data directory is. Check my Reference to find that out.
Here is the entry for Google Talk:
Talk
Version: 1.3
983.17KB - /system/app/Talk.apk
/data/data/com.google.android.talk
Click to collapse
So we can see one .apk file, no .odex file, and one data directory.
1 - Kick up root explorer on your phone and go to /system/app and delete Talk.apk
2 - Still in root explorer, navigate to /data/data and find the folder named com.google.android.talk - delete this folder.
3 - Reboot phone into recovery mode. Once in clockworkmod:
4 - Clear cache from the main CWM menu, by selecting 'wipe cache partition' and then saying yes on the next page.
5 - Clear dalvik-cache. From the main CWM menu choose 'advanced' then 'wipe dalvik cache' then 'yes'. After it's done, hit back then 'reboot system now' from the main cwm menu.
That should be it and talk is now removed from your device.
To re-install Talk:
I attached a copy of the stock talk.apk - if you want to re-install it and were having trouble, try it this way:
1 - Download the attachment to this post, get it on your phone.
2 - Open root explorer, find Talk.apk and copy it. Paste it into /system/app
3 - Once Talk.apk is in /system/app, in root explorer long-press on it to get a menu of options. Choose permissions.
4 - Change the permissions to read:
-Owner - Checked boxes = Read + Write
-Group - Checked box = Read
-Others - Checked box = Read
-Bottom row of permissions all unchecked.
After hitting "ok" you should see that the Talk.apk permissions look like all the other files in /system/app, where it says rw-r--r-- under the file name.
5 - Exit root explorer, then reboot your phone into recovery mode.
6 - Clear cache from the main CWM menu, by selecting 'wipe cache partition' and then saying yes on the next page.
7 - Clear dalvik-cache. From the main CWM menu choose 'advanced' then 'wipe dalvik cache' then 'yes'. After it's done, hit back then 'reboot system now' from the main cwm menu.
That's it, you now have Talk re-installed on your phone.
You won't be able to find google talk on the market, even if you log in from a computer and aren't signed in to an account.
Let me know if that's what you needed, or if you have any other questions.

Yep, I I accidentally the whole thing. I clicked the wrong button in TIBU.
Anyways, I got the phone yesterday, updated it to 2.3.6, and rooted it, but otherwise left it alone. I just rooted so I could restore my apps from my previous phone with TIBU. I did not restore data. Today, I was trying to fix an issue I was having with accounts and sync, and I meant to freeze it, but I hit uninstall and wasn't paying attention to the prompts, so it uninstalled it. It was backed up, but I can't re-install it. I even found the app's .apk in system/app folder, and tried to re-install it but it will not, it just tries for like a second and then says "Not installed". The option is now missing from my settings menu.
I would really like a way to fix it without having to wipe and re-install the OS, but if I have to I can.
nb4 "did you search?" yes, I did. I couldn't find anything that helped.
Thanks in advance, everyone.

I did that, but the Applications and Sync option is not there.
If I did a recovery update to 2.3.6 again, would that fix it perhaps? or will it not let me update it that way since it's already on 2.3.6?

I just ran the 2.3.6 update again. It fixed it, but it turns out that the problem I was trying to fix in the first place which led me to uninstall the app was not a problem at all, it was google locking out facebook sync on nexus S meh, whatever. I only did it for the pictures anyways. Thanks though!
Hi all! Asking for a little help from the xda crew. Yesterday I went through the process of rooting my sgs4g, doing a Titanium Backup, flashing from Froyo to the GB starter pack, and finally installing Valhalla Black edition. Everything went *super* smooth and I love it! The only issue I have is that my contacts will not populate with facebook photos, which I believe is because Valhalla does not use the "accountsandsync.apk"
I believe this to be true based on this thread in another forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102157
Now, that being said, I thought I could just reinstall from my TB file, but I think this is where I made a small mistake yesterday. I backed up "all apps+system data" and when I try to restore the accounts and sync file TB hangs up at the popup window. After doing some research it appears that this may be due to the fact that I saved it with the Froyo system data? *If* all I've said so far is true, could someone please share the "accountsandsync.apk" and anything else I might need to restore this feature in GB on Valhalla Black?
Some simple instructions on where to put the file and how to install would be welcomed with a smile as well!
If I'm incorrect in my assumptions, hopefully someone will get me pointed in another direction so that my phone will populate my contact list with facebook photos again.
To be complete in my attempts at a fix I have tried multiple scenarios between syncing with google, and in the facebook app sync menu with no results.
Thank you in advance for your help!
-Devlin.
My contact pictures always worked fine, even with Valhalla Black. After using TB to restore apps, make sure you log out of Facebook app then log back in and select sync all. After that my contact pictures always populate afterwards. Even the newest Rom by Raver works fine.

Hi, thanks for your reply. For s&g I tried to log out and log back into the FB app but this didn't update my list. This is certainly not a ROM issue. It has to do with not being able to restore my 'accounts and sync' apk. I imagine my contact photos would work if I could restore the accounts and sync apk from TB, but as I stated TB hangs when I try this. I believe this is because of the way I backed it up while still on Froyo. I believe that I need the actual apk from someone currently on GB in order to make this work again...so, original request still stands. Thanks again.
Yes.. rather than use TB to restore I would push the .apk. Anytime you can do fresh installs in better than using TB because it can sometimes cause issues. For future reference you can get most .apks from other ROMs like the stock GB rom.
I use 'Super Manager' from the app market. Open 'Super Manager' then go into file manager. Check your settings in Super Manager by going into setup/root and make sure 'enable ROOT function' is checked. Find your AccountAndSync.apk on your SD Card and copy. Press 'Back up level folder' twice. Go into 'system/app' and make sure 'system is set to (r/w). Paste the AccountsAndSync.apk in the folder.

Thanks a bunch. The app shows up in my app drawer, but force closes when I click on it. I tried to navigate to the file in the system/app folder and set permissions but Super Manager has a blank screen for permissions. Tried install and that process failed as well. Now I'm at a loss for ideas. Might you have any yourself? :/ Also did a reboot, tried to resync with FB app, no success.

I flashed Raver's latest ROM. It had Accounts and Sync in it.
If you have not done it yet try fixing permissions. Uninstall facebook reinstall. Clear cache, fix permissions, uninstall, reinstall fresh... these are all the things I would try.
If all else fails flash the most current release and see what happens. I don't use facebook.
EDIT: Look at the attached files in my previous post. I added one. You may be needing that apk as well.

Installation Option 2:
The Gmail 4.2 APK is signed by Google, but with a different key than the one in the Play Store (we checked the signatures - they differ). One is probably the test key and the other the production key. For this reason, you can't simply install it as an update and therefore need to be rooted with the ability to mount the /system directory for writing in order to remove the existing Gmail APK.
OK, let's get down to it. You'll probably need ADB installed on your computer (here's an easy way that doesn't require downloading the Android SDK). There is a chance that this might work without ADB by just removing the APKs mentioned below and installing the new one, but it didn't seem to work reliably for everyone. This should, though:
1. Download Gmail 4.2 from one of the mirrors above.
2. Rename it to Gmail2.apk.
3. Make a Nandroid backup in case something goes wrong (this is always a good thing to do before messing with your device).
4. Delete (or move if you want to save the APKs) all other versions of Gmail. Usually there are 2 or 3 copies. One will be in /system/app (that's the original Gmail that was pre-installed on the device) and there may be a few in /data/app (these are the updates installed from the Play Store). They'll be called "Gmail.apk," or "com.google.android.gm-[number].apk," An easy way to tell is to look for the Gmail icon.
5. You may need to delete the .odex files matching the APKs in step 4 too, if you have them. Neither I nor Artem had to do this, but there are many different ROMs out there, and we're trying to cover all bases. Ignore this step and only come back to it if something doesn't work later.
6. Reboot. Once you do, you should have no Gmail as far as Android is concerned.
7. You can try to install the Gmail 4.2 APK you downloaded at this point by tapping it in your favorite file explorer (move the APK to your device first, of course). If that doesn't work, or if you prefer ADB, fire up a command line and type adb install Gmail2.apk.
If you get an error message, you probably didn't delete all copies of Gmail. If you don't feel like playing with ADB for Step 7, I've also gotten it to work by just copying the APK to /data/app, but that's not as fool proof as "ADB install".

So you didnt have to go through all the steps outlined in the first post?
If someone can invert this, it would so awesome!
Works fine by doing what Uwdus said, just uninstall the old gmail with titanium backup and then use a root explorer to push the new one to system/app and reboot.
I just renamed the gmail .apk and .odex to .bak and .odex.bak respectively in es explorer, and rebooted. Than I moved the Gmail2.apk to /system/app, fixed permissions, and installed. One more reboot and wala - she was up and running! Thanks for this, very sweet!

It really is most easy to uninstall with titanium backup. Restart device and install new gmail.

yeah wasn't there either in system or user (odd i know)
but i found out the reason i couldn't copy it to the system/app folder was because i apparently didn't have enough space in my system folder (had to give up hellpaper :'-( )

added to OP :good:
Kind of inverted
Just picked up the semi inverted 4.2 made by TeamBaked. Even though I prefer a full inverted app, I must say the white background in the email is actually easier to read. Anyway, check it out (I would post a link but I am not sure I am allowed to).
And installing was a breeze. As others mentioned, uninstall via TiBackup then install...loving the swipe feature.
This is a leaked version from Android 4.2
There are new features and seems to be working on Android 4.0+
Enjoy! Not my work, I take no credit, just passing it along
Hows everyone liking it? Swipe to delete is great! Any bugs out there?

It's working fine for me. Just now checked. You have to hit the label looking icon to change sections. Thats on the bottom right corner.

great, did the same for me, so i used titanium to un-install gmail and then tried to install it, still get an error. Now ti is not restoring my gmail.
Uninstall Gmail with TB.
REBOOT.
Install 4.2 Gmail
I had that same error at first too. You have to Reboot after uninstalling with TB before you install the new one

Ok, I may try that. After it hung re-installing gmail, I rebooted and my screen said updating and then I had gmail again. I'm on stock. Is that an issue?

I personally used root explorer and changed the original gmail apk to Gmail2.bak (yours may either be in system/app or data/app) mine was in data/app because im using AOSP, for stock touchwiz it might be in system/app. For AOSP its probably going to be named com.gmail.apk or something along the lines of that. Anyways after you delete/rename your original one move the 4.2 Gmail2.apk to system/app, set the permissions and reboot. It MUST be in system/app and you have to set the permissions and reboot for it to work

Yep, worked now too. Thanks
Gotta lock this up,the new app is considered warez. Google doesn't want this being distributed.
