[Data Backup and Restore] Backup and Restore /data just like Bonsai

First I'd like to thank the Bonsai team (Mammon88 and Randy_T) for their work.
This little set of files is totally based on their work, I just modified it a bit.
I asked permission before releasing this, and I've left the GPL notices intact.
All changes can be seen by inspecting the files in the zip.

I will attempt to help if anything goes wrong.
But don't try blaming me for something you chose to do.
:[Description]:
There are two ClockworkMod zips, I'll break it down for each file.
ncDataBackup.zip:
This file simply backs up the /data folder to a gzip file on your SD card (exactly like the Bonsai Rom does).
The only difference is that it will store the file in a different folder and file name on your SD card.
The file is stored @ /sdcard/data-backup/backup-data.cpio.gz​
ncDataRestore.zip:
This file first deletes everything in the /data folder.
I figured this would be best so there are no conflicts with files that are already in the /data folder.
[NOTE]:: This also means that if the Rom your are using installs anything into the /data folder, it will be lost during the restore!
Then it simply restores the /data folder from the aforementioned backup file (exactly like the Bonsai Rom does).​
:[Purpose]:
I made this so I never have to setup a home screen again (or loose mms history, call logs, etc)!
For people who are using Roms that don't already preform a backup and restore of the files in /data.
And as an alternative to a bit for bit nandroid backup / restore of the /data partition.
:[Disadvantages]:
As stated, the restore will delete everything in the /data folder before performing the restore.
So anything put there by the Rom you are installing will be lost!
I wouldn't Expect this to work coming from or going to CyanogenMod, but feel free to test for me.
:[Benefits]:
Restores home screens, mms history, call logs, etc...
Can be used whenever for whatever reason (always good to have more options for backup / restore IMO).
:[Usage]:
Boot into ClockworkMod.
ALWAYS DO A NORMAL NANDROID BACKUP WITH CLOCKWORKMOD.
Install the ncDataBackup.zip, it will preform the data backup.
Install your favorite Rom.
Install the ncDataRestore.zip, it will preform the data restore.
Reboot the phone.​
:[Testing]:
This has been tested while running Bonsai v2.0.1.
This has also been tested coming from Bonsai v2.0.1 going to Quantum v2.7.
I only had one FC (gmail) when going to Quantum from Bonsai, and that's because Quantum's gmail wasn't updated.
I simply cleared gmail's data and cache and all was well (then I updated gmail through the market).
[NOTE]:: Both of these Roms are DK28 builds and support EXT4! Your mileage may vary!

Please post your results, good or bad, I'd like to know how well this works for other Roms.
I'm thinking of making a backup/restore zip generator program so this method can be used for other phones.
So if you try this please post your results.

Thanks for this! I had my phone freak out on boot up during the zipalign process, which pretty much killed my /data directory. I had just installed Bonsai 3 the other night and realized the backup it made was not the normal CWM img backup! With your zip I was able to restore the gzip that bonsai 3 created to my phone.
Perhaps there were other built in ways to do the restore but your zips took care of my problem!

Should be an update coming to these in a day or two, not much changed other than including a copy of busybox in hopes of supporting more Roms/devices.

Thanks for the information. At least I know it's not just me. I tried the rom a couple times even restoring from Market with poor results but will probably try again sometime. May need a clean ODIN restore.

Those having problems...
The backup / restore process was altered just a bit with the release of Bonsai 3.0.0.
I mentioned an update to these files yesterday, I'm going to work on that now and get it finished.
I'm not saying that the new changes will fix the problems, but there's a chance.

Those who are freezing at the bootscreen, please report back if you test this.
-ps these files clear out davlik-cache, so the 1st boot after a restore will take a while (but should not freeze @ the samsungmobile screen).

Ok, makes sense. Curious, what does Bonsai do that keeps the apps on SD synced with the OS that this tool does not?

I would be curious as well, only thing i can think of is when Bonsai runs it does not wipe data, if you install a rom that wipes data before install it will wipeout .andriodsecure on the sd card.

Installing a newer rom version

Sorry to beat a dead horse but I have to ask. Ive receive some good advice on how to do this but I'm still not total clear on the procedure. I'm currently running infused 1.5 and would like to update to newest version. In lamins terms what are the exact steps. I've referanced the dev section but all I really see is how to install from stock. When I referenced the dev page I noticed and downloaded the full infused 1.5.2 and when I looked into root manager its listed as whitesmoke installer. If that's what I need than I suppose I need instructions from this point on. Thanks.

MUCH easier and faster way is simply go to free ROM Manager, go to gtg and download 1.5.0 to 1.5.2 update only which is under 3MB, then phone will auto reboot and install everything. Takes less than 2 minutes.

That's what I thought but I think I was told not to use rom manager, I think I was told that because of the possibility of green text but I'm red so maybe I could have used rom manager. Any who, I installed the new version and it was pretty painless. I'm kind of upset in a small way, I lost the slide unlock and slide to silent, it went back to the original slide. Any way to get it back?

Reinstall the "AOSP Lockscreen" addon, which should also be in his first post.

CWM Restore Problem

When I try to restore my backup I made yesterday its says "md5 mismatch". I'm on the 5th version of cwm I'll update the post with the exact version once I find it. Does anyone know what the problem is ?

it probably wont work w/any recovery if it really does have an md5 mismatch.
you dont really want to restore from a file thats bad
use anyone of these three, just get the zip version and install to both internal and external sdcards just to make your recovery can mount either scdard to install it

Not in this case, I know a rename will cause mismatch, but more specifically spaces. I know some users renamed with spaces and couldn't restore until they removed spaces.
Given this is not the case, it seems the backup should not be restored.

if you just change the folder name, its fine, but not any files in that folder/
where is backup located int or ext
card might not have enough free space and it didnt actually finish the backup.
maybe just a bad backup
or sdcard going bad

Its on the external and there was about 8gb of data left before the backup

run a check disk w/windows and see if it finds any errors, sdcards are known to go bad especially unbranded ones

well I don't no vincom, I just renamed my folder 2012-06-22.04.46.12 with (stockICS) at the end, so 2012-06-22.04.46.12(stockICS) and I got mismatch md5 until I remover (stockICs) also 5.8.1.3 recovery......dill

i rename mine all the time to keep track of then, im on twrp now but the other ones were fine, even 5.8.13

The one with less items is the backup that's not working so you may be right that it didn't fully backup.

something got fracked up, if you had enough space it should of worked, run check disk on the sdcards to see if windows finds any errors.

Just reflash the rom, kernel, and modems versions that go with the backup then do an advanced restore of data.ext4.tar only to get your data partition back. That's where all your settings and config live.
Don't really need the system, recovery, boot, or cache tars/img files of the backup as you can reflash them from the source rom.

are u still saying you kept the original name, meaning no name change
edit: i changed the name of the backup folder within android, rebooted into twrp , restored the backup just fine

Back Ups Disappeared?

All of my ROM and IMEI back ups have mysteriously disappeared? Any way to recover them?

Pure Google AOSP, but I first noticed it while running LiquidSmooth. Went in to back up liquid so I could flash Pure Google and noticed all my back ups were gone.

Does your sdcard now have a /0? You mentioned you're using CWM 6.0.1.0 which I know isn't 100% compatible with 4.2

sorry to hear this, happened to me once too.
luckily you haven't having IMEI issues, and can make another backup, I backup everything to my computer and drop box, and i mean every little thing, from now on after that just to be safe

Yea, there's a newer version that's supposed to have support for multi-user feature. This is why you have /0 in your file system. If you're sticking with AOSP 4.2, then you need a newer version of CWM which you can download from the official CWM website. It should download as an img file which you can use EZ Recovery (available in the Play Store) to install and properly update.
The next step would be to select all and copy everything in the /0 folder then move it up to /sdcard.

Alright I now have the newer version of CWM. When copying everything from the /0 folder to the /sdcard it says "overwrite - warning!!!! do you want to overwrite (folder will be merged)? Is this normal? Should I proceed? (thanks for the help by the way)

You don't really want to have a /0 directory because it changes the path for anything you use that is saved to /sdcard. Try restoring a nandroid and you begin to see the problem. That's what leads to the posts such as this since it's usually unexpected.

[ROM][CM7] Defy Pro XT560

This is a mostly functional CM7 build for the Motorola Defy Pro XT560. There is a little lag when recording high quality videos, but, everything else should be functional. Use the instructions below for installing. If you run into any issues you can always use one of the SBF files from this thread to recover. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2520124
Use at your own risk. Please back up any important data before installing.
1. Root phone
2. Extract the attached zip and run the Bootmenu installer (BootInstall.bat) with the phone connected..
3. Reboot into stock recovery and clear cache/data (backup anything wanted first).
4. Reboot normally from recovery, this will take you into CWM.
5. In CWM select recovery/custom recovery.
6. Select install zip from sd card then choose zip from sd card and select and install the xt560_cm7.zip
7. Select choose zip and install gapps.
8. Select back and reboot system.
The rom can be downloaded from http://www.sendspace.com/file/gakl1i

The button of the volume (+) is had to me broken. It fixes so soon it, will install this ROM.
exists some way to enter boot recovery without pressing the three buttons at the same time?

Awesome to see this phone get some love. Any reason I should try this rom over a de-bloated, rooted stock rom? Id personally rather get a newer android version unless cm7 offers a lot of benefit over stock.
