Hello, I wanted to ask everyone's opinion on what is the best ROM/Modem combination. I live in WV (Eastern) so there is a lot of hills so really I don't have any trouble with reception most of the time being on top hills but I would like to have better if possible because it seems the places I need it most I get from "No Service", "Edge", "3G" or "H" and it moves around but mostly on edge. Right now I am running the stock Serendipity 6.4. Any ideas on how to get better reception?
Thanks,
Mods frown on these types of posts. ROMs are very personal and what works for one may not work for another. Radios/modems are very geographically variable. Try looking in the modems sticky in Dev. Lots of good info in there.
You should try flashing different modems and see which one works for you. I'm in the same area and kb1 and jk4 work well for me. But I've been running 2.3.3 for a while now. Good luck!

Hello-
after seeing multiple questions on "what modem do I use" throughout here, I see one trend in the responses: it depends on where you live, etc....
so to make things a little easier, I would like to start a thread for people to post their modem files they're using, region, and how well it works as well as any other pertinent information. That way 2 people from the same region can save time and collaborate and people from central pennsylvania, for example, will be able to see that the KJ3 and KD1 modems both work in this area fairly well, KI3 not so well, and save other people in this area (and others) the trouble of "reinventing the wheel" trying to find the best modem file when someone in their area already has one working great.
So I'll start
Region: Central Pennsylvania, USA (york/harrisburg area)
Rom: octane v2.0 w/ gingerbread
Modem files tried: KD1 (stock, worked ok except in town for some goofy reason)
KJ3: works well, no issues so far, nice speeds, have yet to test all over the region, will update as neccessary
KI3: haven't had much luck with this one, it works but not as well as the other two from what I could find, but the difference is rather little
those are the only 3 I have tested, I do intend to test the rest of them for this region.
If you have tested modem files on your galaxy s 4g, please post what ones you used, your region, and how well they worked. Rom information would probably be useful too......hopefully this should make it easier for people as we'll hopefully have a single reference for "what works where best"....
I think this is a great idea, but I think we need to set up some sort of standard to judge the speeds. One person's "good" may be another person's "poor" and yet another man's "pretty fast". Perhaps we should use something like SpeedTest.net for both WiFi and network speeds for example. I think having a set standard to judge speeds would make this idea worth while. I think it would be great to know which modems work best and where.
Excellent idea, an agreed standard is key. I've been using speedtest.net app for mine, with about average 4mbps down and 2mbps up on 4g (with a few random odd network errors on upload test), 10+mbps down and 5mbps up on wifi. definitely better than stock ROM.
I guess this thread would be based on the best speeds and reception you ever received?
There's so many factors that determine how good a modem is that I stopped caring, lol.

Well, it really shouldn't be the best speeds, but the average. Maybe try 3 different tests on 3 different servers, throw out the high and the low, and post the middle (or post all three, whatever). That way we're not posting only the best speeds we're getting, which obviously aren't the speeds we're normally getting
Eastern PA here. Ki3 rocks for me. I spent an entire day using each modem, and test the new ones as they become available. I run multiple tests throughout the day with both speed test and wifi analyzer, so far ki3 has been top dog for me. I don't have access to my numbers right now (at work) but i have them all written down at home...

Not quite sure how this will work but I live in Red Bluff , CA . This is Northern california in between Redding and Sacramento. I am not familiar with flashing modems but know that there really is no best modem because it depends on your area.
Is there anyone near my area that has tried different modems and if so which one (s)works best for you??
Currently I am running Obsession Rom and my mofem is ki3
Was thinking about posting results after i get a list going to help users to have a starting point. so, even if you're not in my area go ahead and list your state, city/town, zip code along with the modem that works best for you.
Thank you all in advance
thansk to you all so far for your participation. Seems that KK2 so far is best but for me it was the worst one i have tried so far...hmm? Amymore people in california..or maybe even Northern Calif? Keep em coming,
May be off-topic but the best modem i have used OUT of usa (Mexico and Brasil) its KK2, gives me solid voice quality and good Data speeds(Enough for me, about 4.5 mb down and 1 mb up) but that again... its not on AT&T... haha anyways ive met a few international Infuse owners so if its worth something, i would say go KK2 Modem.
I'm in Rhode Island. I think KK2 is the best here. I flashed a rom that put me back at KI3 and immediately noticed less reliable internet.
Also with KK2 I have gotten the best gps performance out of this phone, which was unusable out of the box.
I've played with most of the modems and I am sticking with KK2.
St. Louis, MO. KK2 has also been the best for me...gps, data, signal.
KH2 Awesome. Straight H everywhere I go. South Florida.
<Infusing>
Atlanta GA ....KK2 kicks butt for me too..

Seems like KK2 across the board, anyone know why that is?
Los Angeles over here, KK2 works nice but I haven't compared it much. Speeds seem good to me, I don't have a need to try others.
Kk2, kk2 with miui ics gets better, for me.

I'm still somewhat of a noob to android, so please forgive me.
I'm currently running paranoid android 2.13 on my one x and was wondering what radio would give me the best signal. I can almost get 3g/HSDPA at my house, but need a little extra boost. I can get it in my driveway, but not inside of my house.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

In the radio thread op there is a map that shows users' speeds across the US. Or...flashing them takes all but a minute. I suggest flashing one every night and see how it performs through a day with reception and battery, keep notes and see what is best for your area.
Definitely check out the radio thread. A lot of users have been having good luck with the O2 2.26 radio.
For me, I have been happy with AT&T 1.85. I get better signal strength with 2.26, but I get amazing data speeds with 1.85 and haven't seen it on the other radios. Best to try a bunch for a day or two each, and see which one you like best.
Thanks! I'll take a look at the 2.29 radio
Edit: great luck with the o2 2.29 radio so far. I have 2 bars of HSDPA where I would normally have none. I'll have to see if it makes an improvement at the house.

First off I apologize if there is another thread about this but all I found when searching was a general "best rom", and one related to battery life.
Personally I would like to know opinions on best rom for connectivity only. I live in a strong 4G area but whenever I am in my basement I get spotty connectivity, drop calls and such. I have been on the CM10 nightlies crack flashing since the boot-loader was unlocked. I love CM10 just wondering for basic call quality, does someone have a different rom preference for call quality?
Again mods I apologize if this is out there... but i couldn't find one for call quality. I realize this all depends on the baseband and such which Samsung is infamous for theirs. I just feel like even a slight better signal would make a big difference for me considering generally it's good connection.
Also my office is in my basement and I make a lot of calls and I'd prefer to keep it that way if possible.
Any thoughts are appreciated.
I'd actually like to know this as well. I recently switched from using an iphone to a Samsung Galaxy S3 and the difference with this phone is there are so many different roms available, I don't know which one is the best whereas with the iphone there is usually 1 main jailbreak and everything else is provided by cydia.
Like you said, this mainly is based on the radio and not on the Rom, but i agree there could be some minor differences. Your best bet would be to try a couple out and see how they work in your office. I personally am running jellywiz and my signal is rock sold and i work in low signal areas a lot.

If you search the forum there is actually a main thread for best rom overall which may help you more since it doesn't seem your only concern is call quality. Sorry I don't have the thread name but I think if you do a forum search for "best rom" you should be able to find that thread.

I actually planned on doing that and testing them out on my own, I was just hoping someone may have some tips on one they have used in areas such as a basement or a place they know they haven't always gotten good service but have found a rom that works great for them as far as call quality. Such as your example of jellywiz, I will certainly give that a try and see if I can hold a higher consistency for call quality. Thanks for your input!
There are definetly differences between ROMs relative to battery life... different versions of the same ROM can be quite different.
I've been using Jellywiz as my DD and it's been great. I really liked RLS4. I've updated to RLS5 this morning but my battery life has declined greatly. I've also gotten one reboot. I'm sure the dev will have it fixed in the next release (the Devs on the Jellywiz project are top notch).
I also liked Synergy quite a lot... It's not Jelly Bean, but the battery life was great and very stable!
The best thing you can do is try several different ones... Let the ROM settle for a good day or two before coming to any conclusions...
Good luck...

Without getting too granular, stock based roms have the best reception. Rom's where the RIL has had to be tweaked, such as CM, MIUI, JellyBean ports, and cross carrier ports are more likely to have radio issues.
Then, there are different radios you could flash. In my experience with many devices, changing radios has never had much of an impact on radio reception. Different radio versions generally fix bugs, and things like 3g/4g switching. For instance the latest stock radio for our device (VRLG7) fixes the "no SIM" bug. I am using that and it has worked great for me.
Generally though, I don't think actual reception (mostly dependent on hardware) should vary too much. Usually it's reliability that can vary. "Bars" aren't always an accurate indicator of reception either, signal strength in dBm is.

Sorry... I got lost in an unrelated thought (battery life)....
The service side appears to be pretty sold from the ROMs that I've personally tried. Not sure you'll find a big difference here in real world performance.
CodefireX is getting me the best service I've ever had. Several other people in the thread seem to be experiencing the same thing.

I have not seen the 4G indicator since flashing a week or more ago. I have tried aokp, cm10, and root66.
Not sure what to do. The phone works fine otherwise. All these are great but I would never have gone this route if I had any thought that wireless capabilities would be reduced. Any ideas on how to return to 4G would be greatly appreciated.
Out of all the 4.1 roms out there, JellyWiz's wifi/4G/3g is the most solid one. Very stable and good enough to be a DD.

What's the best working modem for cm10? I've heard a lot of complaints so I wanna know what the best results you have been getting.

I don't think there is a "best" modem for CM10. From what I understand, it depends on your actual device, your distance from towers and your usage patterns (e.g. how often you hop from 3G to 4G). I could tell you my limited experience with various modems and CM10, but it could prove to be unhelpful for your specific case. That said, the G7 modem worked better for me on both AOSP and JB/TW roms. I live in a cellular blackhole and my phone bounces between basic phone service coverage to 3G to 4G. When I was using the latest modem (K1 I think) and an AOSP rom, I don't think I ever saw my phone get a lock on 4G. And TW roms would always say "Network Extender" (instead of Verizon Wireless) on the lock screen.
In short, try 'em out for a day or two and see which one works best for you.
Every radio/modem is going to give every single user a different experience. There is no single "best" one because everybody gets various results. What's "best" for me may not be "best" for you. Only advice i can give you is to try out different ones and if you find that gives you really good results then stick with it, there's no reason to fix something that ain't broken
Okay. Thanks both of you! I live in a cellular black hole too and am very surprised I get to send texts at all because its just my phone,my bros iPhone, and Motorola phones that even get service in my house. I'll try swapping them around a bit starting with the factory one and ending with newest. Thanks!
