[Q] HELP!! need details for un-rooting.. - General Questions and Answers

alright so i got my evo a few mnths ago, 1st android phone..installed cm7 nightly but pretty sure i missed some steps & didnt root it properly..i would like to completely reset my phone back as if i just took it out of the box & install the new cm7 stable release on my phone...so basically i would like some help from some of u more experienced droid users on how to un-root my phone & reset it, step by step & then install the full cm7..& i need in depth details cuz im not very experienced & dont know all the unsaid things u have to do that arent listed it the root methods & all that..thanks for your help..

Best bet is to head to the evo forums and have a look at the stickes, most forums will have guides to unrooting your phone

download the stock rom for your phone

you can go here http://geekfor.me/evo/ruu/evo_ruu_1326511/#more-1395 to download the ruu and you can flash this. read the website. it's from a person who makes roms for the evo. he made the fresh's rom. but basically you need the ruu and when you flash it it will be back to stock. make sure to flash it through the bootloader

guys i dont think yall understand i am a total noob at this..basically i installed the cm7 nightly back before the stable version came out & i really cldnt even tell u how i did that, i followed some instructions on youtube..im having radio issues & i think i either need to get this thing back to stock or get the stable release of cm7 on here, but i dont know the exact details of how to do either..do i have to clear data & cache & all kinds of stuff before or what do i do..i need details guys, im completely retarded at this stuff & shld never have attempted it in the 1st place..if possible id like someone to talk me through it cuz if not i have a feeling my phones gonna end up a paperweight..

[Q] Help with rooting+installing custom ROMs for Samsung Galaxy 3(i5801) running 2.2?

Okay, now I know that there are other threads about this, but the issue is that none are specific to my problem. Either they are not for my phone, or my version is different or the thread is dead and with no replies. So I created a new thread.
Anyway, I was hoping that I could get a step by step procedure on how to root my phone and install a custom ROM.
The issue is, my KIES doesn't work (so help me with that also please) and moreover, I'm very new to all this so I don't quite get a few things.
Also, please tell me what are the best ROMs out there and if something does go wrong in the process, how do I un-brick my phone?
So I'm looking for active replies / repliers since I know I'll have a bunch of questions during the process.
Last, when I go to "about phone" on my phone it says "firmware version 2.2", but the little that I've looked up, people run 2.2.1. Does this mean my rooting process is different?
Thanks. And in case you want it, my kernel version is 2.6.32.9
Appreciate it.
rooting z4root
custom rom - pick a custom rom and follow instruction in that thread.
Your phone is already updated to 2.2 and that is the reason why kies doesn't show new updates. Our phone has 2.2 and not 2.2.1
If you use roms which doesnt have boot then it will not get hard bricked. soft brick can be fixed by reflashing.
What is the exact issue you are facing while using kies? Try a uninstall and reinstall. That should fix it
K, so I fixed KIES. I just had to update though, I was running on an older version. I didn't think a slightly outdated version would not detect my phone.. anyway never mind that.
So I don't really know what the best custom ROM is out there. could you suggest one? one that is fast (speed is really the priority), and not buggy, supports the apps that the stock ROM should. I'm willing to try three-four, so give me the names of the best ones out there.
Don't I need to root my phone before installing a custom ROM? If so, then I need to learn how to do that..
What do you mean it doesn't have a boot?
Well to figure out best ROm you will have to read up on each ROm. Each of them have separate thread where initial posts describe the properties of ROm. There are ROm comparison threads out there but that is just summary. I cant give you best choices. Everybody has different taste. Start with more popular ones, whose threads have more posts. More post -> more popular.
You can root using z4root.
Custom ROM are pre rooted normally so you need not root your phone before flashing custom rom

if speed is a prime consideration then i would suggest kyrillos rom..... fastest rom i ever used....... very less buggy.......
you can also flash lestatious rom..... it is damn fast and surprisingly stable!.....
and check dharam's rom collection too....... i'm using his ultra clean ultimate rom right now..... and it's good although since you are new i would recommend flashing a different rom from his collection.....
As for rooting.... you don't need to root before flashing a custom rom....
And in case you need any information about any of the features or anything.... just post it here ....... i'lll try to help you in whatever way i can.,.....

Hey i would suggest u to go for Indroid 4.3. I m using this and have seen many users jumping from lestatious and kyrollis to indroid.
As a begginer, u will also get many help in Indroid thread.
Z4root doesnt work in Froyo, if u wanna root, choose superone click.
U dont need kies to work, Use Odin to flash ur fone.
Make sure to learn processes better by reading through forums, if u dont wanna brick ur fone.
Hey!! I would suggest Indroid 4.3 or Kyrillos 5.6. They are fast as hey have lagfix.
And no you don t have to root your phone before installing a custom ROM. But if you want to root, use superoneclick to root.
And as for bricking, you can avoid hard brick by installing a ROM that does not have bootloader. Bootloader is a piece of code that runs before any operating system starts. So you should avoid flashing bootloader.
As for soft bricks, you can just reflash to come out of the soft brick.
okay so i was doing a bit of reading up and i realised the following :
1)First i need to download :
a) Odin (please post version number i have to get for my i5801 (or is it just one thing for all phones?) or a link please.)
b) some backup software. now i downloaded titanium backup, but it won't open because it says my phone is not rooted. so help me go about this.
c) a custom ROM. I think i'll start off with kyrillos rom since i've been told it's the fastest and very less buggy. i'll then move on to Dharam's ROM if i don't like kyrillos rom because Dharam seems to be a very active user, and quite friendly, and i feel he can solve the issues well. after that i'll try Indroid.
d) I also need superone click.
Question : Where do i download these? directly on my phone or on my computer?
2) I can increase my internal storage by partitioning a part of my SD card. Now I have a 4 GB SD card and i barely use it, so i don't mind giving upto 1GB of it. Please suggest the perfect amount. whether 1GB will be too much, or whether 500MB would be too less.
3) some apps do not work with custom ROMs. The app that i really want is 4shared. It's working currently on my phone with the stock ROM, so if someone can check if that will also work on the three ROMs that i mentioned.
4) soft bricking isn't much of an issue, but it's better i avoid it. so can someone give me a rather up-to-date guide (or link) on rooting, because the other ones are REALLY old. at least 4-5 months old and there have been some updates after that.
5) I can also overclock my phone. And from what I read up, SetCPU seems compatible with the above ROMs. And after flashing my phone with a custom ROM, my phone is automatically rooted. Correct me if I am wrong.
6) Flash player isn't available for our processor (V6). Since this is a hardware issue, there's no way i can make it work on some other ROM, can I? Because flash is a rather important software..
So that's it, I guess. Please add anything if i missed out anything.
PS : Does anyone know of any software using which I can download YouTube videos? Because the YouTube app kind of sucks, and buffering takes time since I don't have WiFi.
Wow!! Those are a lot of questions.
1) Link for ODIN.
ODIN>http://goo.gl/nCxCw
OPS FILE>http://goo.gl/ORin0
As for the backup software, Titanium backup is the best out there. As it can backup all the apps and all the settings. Yes you have to be rooted. So root and use.
And for rooting, use this tutorial,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011555
Don t worry about the oldness. This works. The link for superoneclicjk is available in that post as well.
Yes. Kyrillos is a good ROM. As it is prelagfixed and offer good internal memory as well after you partition your SD. Sizes, 512 MB ext4 and 128 MB linux swap. Rest of the memory you can use for storage.
As far as overclocking is concerned, in Kyrillos, you again have to flash a new kernel if you want OC.
And for the flash problem, only adobe can solve that problem.
And oh yes, most of the custom roms are prerooted. So after flashin you don t have to root again.

The rom is downloaded on your pc and flashed through it using odin.
I don't know any apps that work on stock rom and not on custom rom..... and 4shared works on kyrillos and indroid..... i've used it myself..
Most custom roms are already rooted and setcpu is the best app for setting CPU frequencies.
And as you said flash player isn't compatible with armv6 processors like ours.... so unless adobe makes it compatible no custom rom can do anything.
and for downloading youtube videos i'll suggest an app called you tube downloader or tube-X.......
Hope this helps...
Kernel
I flashed the indroid 4.0 Rom with Odin, and in short I will probably try to flash the indroid 4.3 Rom.
One question however, More and more I read about "kernel"(eg to get the 1% battery thing).
I know the kernel is the core of the operating system, but I don't understand how to use/apply it on my phone. Is the kernel something I have to flash separatly from the Rom, or is it included in the Rom?
If you need to install / flash it seperatly, where can I find the different kernels, and which one is recommended for my phone (Samsung Galaxy 3 Apollo)?
Hope someone can answer!
thnx

The kernel is included in the ROM itself. There are different kernels with different functionalities. For eg : - Most of the kernel that come with the ROMS are non-OC. So, if you want to overclock you phone, you have to flash the required kernel after flashing the ROM. The procedure is same using ODIN. Here s the link to the kernels.

Sorry for replying so late guys. Had a bit of an issue with the internet. Lightening struck somewhere near my house so it was down for a few days.
Anyway, thanks for all your help. I'll try to root+flash my phone day after as I have exams for two more days.
I'll post here if I have any other questions, but thanks a LOT for all your answers and help. But btw, what is the 1% battery mod?

if u have any other launcher like adw then go to settings > application > Adw launcher (for example) and press clear default.
Then press the home key, It should ask u to set detault launcher. Just click on the checkbox below and select touchwiz launcher.
Tell me if it works or not.
No I do not have any other launcher installed. At least it's not showing up there.. but i did try using the more latest version. 1.9.5. that seemed to work just fine. man, i was so scared before rooting this wondering what if something goes wrong. but that was easy
Titanium backup now and maybe flashing a new rom tomorrow (or in a couple of days, after my exam.) Thanks though! =)

I would suggest, go for indroid but follow all the steps properly and read the forums for all the problems.
and yeah we also get awesome themes and more memory /system!!
custom roms are faster with better battery backup.
currently on indroid 6!!

How to flash CM7

Hi all - I'm very new to all this, but I've been trying to research and read up on everything. I believe I have the rooting process down, but I'm just so nervous about flashing CM7. I don't want to brick!
Is it basically the same as flashing any other custom rom? Or are there any other specific steps involved when flashing CM7? I just want to make sure I do everything correctly. I've looked but really the only step by step guide I can find is wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Thunderbolt:_Full_Update_Guide, but it has some different steps in the rooting process such as downgrading and s-off. This is the rooting guide I was following forum.androidcentral.com/thunderbolt-rooting-roms-hacks/72524-procedure-how-root-thunderbolt-adb-windows.html.
Just confused on what steps to follow. Thanks in advance for any help!
I followed this one: www .androidpolice .com/ 2011/ 03/ 19/ exclusive-how-to-root-the-htc-thunderbolt-and-unlock-its-bootloader / (sorry for the spaces) which basically looks like the same thing as the wiki link you sent.. but perhaps formatted a bit better.
After that, I installed rom manager, downloaded the current cm7 build (and gapps from rom manager), and flashed it. .. I did later go back to upgrade my radio the the 402w version, as that seemed to help with some stability issues.
Right now cm7 is *mostly* stable for me.. I get some oddness after a day or so of uptime.. suddenly the phone thinks it's in angola.. the only way I can clear that boot into recovery and wipe the cache. I've also had issues in launchpro where the non-launcher pro widgets seem to get corrupted and not load after a power off/power on (although no problem with a reboot....)
Lots of people complain about the 4g support although that's not so much of a concern for me (I don't live in a 4g area.. I bought the phone for development, I needed something with a better camera then the motorolas).

Speed only no bling

Hi all I am new to smart phones but do have decent PC knowledge. I own the charge and day one and two I was quite happy now i am going nuts this thing is laggy as heck!!! Brief.. I Want to mod ....want fast and responsive.. no need for bling and looks. I have read so many posts I am confusing myself.
What would be the fastest set up do I go gingerbread or stay froyo with this clock mod and lag fix. Also I am uncertain about the steps. I assume I root first. then start flashing . But what is flashing what I see kernal rom ect.. I just dont want to screw up and I have read a decent amount guess Im just a dope
This is a general post...for next time. I would go with odin and install gummycharged for either froyo or gingerbread. I believe the froyo roms with voodoo lagfix are super fast but the gingerbread leaks allow skype and netflix etc. im running gummy charge gingerbread and its a 100 % improvement than stock. So bottom line if u want stable and fast go with gummycharge either froyo or gongerbread. So get ur up to date odin on ur pc and download cwm and get to learning the generation of android hacking.
Froyo also has Netflix working..FYI
Awsome I think Ill try the gingerbread. It seems like all the droids are heading that route anyway.
step 1. So Ill use Odin to flash Gingerbread, will that root the phone auto?? Or do I root first.
step 2.Then I Install gummycharged I assume with Odin as well???
step 3. Then when Im done I clean out cache (gotta look that up not sure how)
Then I just add google info to get contacts back and hit the market for my apps.....Cell service data and satalite should all be fine and working with no extra steps???? I am confused from these other forums ive read on some stuff is contradicting but XDA seems to be the authority tough. Sorry about post location Mods feel free to change..and sorry Im a noob...great Noob video though
I would strongly discourage using the current Gingerbread ROMs unless you're a veteran to flashing and modding (and even then, I'd still discourage it because of the number of bugs in the leaks -- there are a number of issues and you almost certainly will run into them at one point or another).
Voodoo'd Froyo is faster than RFS'd Gingerbread, too.
Also, please post questions in the General section. Development is for threads containing actual ROMs/hacks/mods/fixes/guides/etc. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074281)

Will do from now on..again sorry.
Thanks for the heads up on the froyo speed and bugs in Gingerbread. (lol bugs in the gingerbread) Is there a way to redirect this post to general?? I would like to post a few more questions about steps to take but dont want to be posting in the wrong area and I dont want to start a new thread.

Don't necessarily agree with you on this point. I have always found GB roms to be faster than Froyo, and my experience on the Charge has been no different. As for bugs, there are really only a few and, IMO, they are fairly minor now (soft key lights, etc.). I'm much happier on the leaked GB than I was on stock Froyo or on any of the Froyo based roms.
Ok I didnt want to start a new thread I figured one less is better untill its moved
I think I have it all figured out. Im just going to do the humble 1.42 fryo. So far I did the usb debug mode got drivers installed on Pc. Got Odin 1.3 and Humble142.tar.md5 with ODIN. Im at latest stock update EE4 I assume this is ok.
I just need to figure out how to Wipe data/factory reset-Wipe cache
Ive read flash instructions and watched a video pretty dummy proof. My main concern now is Ive read that your APN gets wiped when you root but ive only read that on one post...is this the case I have no idea how to back up apn settings. If its not the case and I flash these files after the flash is complete do I wipe the cache and data again??? Thanks guys your all awsome..I went with froyo cause ive never used gingerbread dont know the diff just want the lag to stop
I don't know what that person/thread was talking about, but all you need to do is:
1. Put your phone in Download Mode (while it's powered off, plug it into USB while holding Volume Down; the phone should show an orange warning triangle)
2. Start Odin (you should see a green COM port on the top left section; that means your phone is connected correctly)
3. Select the Humble .tar.md5 in PDA (PDA PDA PDA! DO NOT CHOOSE PHONE)
4. Hit Start, wait until Odin says PASS and your phone restarts
5. Use your phone.
You don't even need to wipe data manually, as Odin does that automatically.
So easy its insane Thanks guys I made a lotta outa notta... devs are darn smart and to think my buddys think im the bright one And thanks for changing to general whomever took care of that sorry again.

Hello SGS4G XDA section! Newbie needs a lot of help!

Hey guys i`ve recently managed to get an SGS 4G Vibrant ( i believe that i am at right place to seek for help ) , i have the T-Mobile version of the phone. I need help switching to different/better ROM, at this moment the phone uses the stock one ( or i believe so ). I`ve been tru the threads and saw that there are a lot of stuff posted about what you need to do/have to flash a rom, but i just cant understand the right order of doing the things.
If its posible can someone really quick just post the steps for the guide for flashing a ROM to the phone. I have previous expiriance with android phone and i am aware how thing go, just as i said i cant get the right order of puting all the thing at one place.
For the phone i used to have was like, first i had to install an stocklike ROM which had recovery, but before that i had to get some kind of software for LG that alowes to flash the rom via download mode. So is the same here? It would be awesome if someone can link or atleast type all the software and other thing i need to have installed to make this work. For now what i have is the USB drivers for Samsung.
Thanks in advance!

Ok, that helped, not sure how i missed it. I am gonna write down what i did so far, so you could see if i messed up something.
I rooted the phone via SuperOneClick 2.2, then i installed the SGS Kernel Flasher, and then flashed the kernel, my current phone was running an 2.3.7 android, so i used the Basic with a Twist`s kernel ( i hope i did it right ), and now the phone rebooted and some different boot screen apiared with some Robotic Chick speeking some stuff, BUT for now the phone load to there, it doesnt wannt to load.
So did i messed up something, or ....
Can you go into recovery by holding Volume Up+Volume Down while pressing the power button and as soon as the SGS 4G splash appears leaving the power button ?
If so and you can see CWM Ver. 5.0... then kernel was successfully flashed.
You shouldn't be getting a bootloop.
What ROM do you want to flash ? If you want to flash GB then I suggest Barebone/Valhalla of some kind.
If you want ICS - Go to the CM 9.1 thread and follow the instructions. After that you may change to AOKP or MIUI or all the rest of the ICS ROMs you wanna try.

I am sorry I do not know how to get you back to where you started before flashing the wrong ROM.
Good luck
Well, it wasnt a bootloop, it just loaded to some point and stoped. Gladly still got the download mode and brought it back to normal to how it was. Thats why i came here to ask, `couse there are too much similiar sgs`s and stuff for them here, i just got confused whats what. Got to start from scratch anyway, at least i didnt bricked it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21953587&postcount=1 <---- That's a post by Lumin 30 with a guide on how to get from stock to custom GB. If you want to get to ICS then use CWM 5.0.x.x.

[Q] flashing questions verizon i605

I have a verizon i605 rooted and unlocked. I know how to download the files and where to put them. My question is im running 4.1.1 base ALL4 kernel 3.0.31-414933. When i flash a rom like 4.2.2 nightly it says installation aborted why? Im wiping the cach and dalvik and then doing a factory reset. would be good if someone would just do it for me.lol. i work long hours 7 days a week and i really dont have the time to do all of this anyway. Seems like its taking me forever to flash my i605, owell i will get it one of these days i guess. guess ill have to go to you tube and watch some videos. Im affraid im gonna brick my phone and i really dont know enough about all of this yet to fix it if that does happen. So i guess ill just stay where im at. I can say that mine is rooted and unlocked and i done that all by my self thanks to Adam Outlers video and step by step instructions. Not saying that the instructions on here are bad because there not, its just really confussing to me. If anyone would like to help me out with this hit me up my email is [email protected] if i dont get back to you right away that means im either asleep or at work. Thanks to everyone on this site some smart mofo's on here!!!!
