No 3g? - T-Mobile LG G2x

Hey guys I was noticing my G2x only ever says 4g or 2g, never 3g. Why is that? It would definitely be nice to switch from 3g to 4g instead of to 2g.
Am I missing something about how t-mobile's 4g is an expanded 3g?

So they can call it 4g

Im guessing the 4g icon is just that, an icon. I dont have 4g in Lakeland yet, but everywhere I had 3g, the 4g icon is on there. and places I had edge, it says 2g. Just my $0.02

it is as he stated above... tmobile just "dropped" the 3G icon (or LG did it)
so if your area is only 3G at the moment like mine is it will display 4G but that is not accurate.... im calling tmobile about this and will ask more... plus i wanna know when my area will be getting 4G (prolly never)

I just came from Verizon. U have to laugh when I see 4g on my phone. Much slower than my Verizon's 3g. Phone is awesome though. Worth the move.

Has anyone tried going to Setting > Wireless and Networks > Mobile Networks and changing the network mode to try and get a 3G symbol to show up? I'd try it myself but I get no signal in the house I'm in at the moment (Wi-Fi calling FTW!).

I forced my network to used WCDMA and my icon says 4g. But I checked in About Phone Status and it says I'm on hspa not hspa+. So it appears 4g means maybe 3 or 4g.
Sent from my LG-P999 using Tapatalk

For the life of me I can't get this phone to connect to hspa. My vibrant right next to me can but all I get is umts on the g2x. Hate having a phone that is "4g" but slower than my "3g" phone. I've reset it and tried everything I can think of.

Those are excellent speeds for this phone. You are on HSPA+ for sure, otherwise you'd be getting less than 1-3 Mbps down/0.5-1.0 Mbps up if you were on 3G only.
Also your phone should say "4G" right in the status bar, which is what T-Mobile calls HSPA+.
I didn't mean the lame comment but I knew it would get me results. I do average between 4 and as high as 11 mbps so the speeds reflect hspa+ I just assumed it would say hspa+ not hspa in my settings.

This is the expected behaviour. He was talking about the label for "4G" or HSPA+ in settings. HSPA+ is simply T-Mobile's version of 4G. Which, for what it's worth, isn't technically 4G.
The status bar indicator isn't accurate. Side-by-side, my G2 with Mobile Signal PRO shows 3G while the G2X never moves from 4G. Mobile Signal PRO never registers anything above 3G on the G2X which is weird. I have friends that use it on Samsung and HTC phones and it's always spot-on and it's always been accurate on my G2. I think there's something funky going on with the LG radio software.
its propably not fully optimized for the g2x yet

It works on a friends P990 in the Netherlands so it must be specific to the T-Mobile version of the radio. I e-mailed the dev to find out what's up.
There will not be an H or H+ icon... its 4g... hspa is too many letters for the general public to deal with...

Same issue here.
This morning I wake up, and my thunderbolt is stock on 1x. If I switch to 4G, it will do 4g, but back to CDMA only, and stuck on 1x. I have 4G at home, but leave it on 3G because I normally am at work with no 4G coverage.
I flashed the stock mr 2 rom just to confirm and used the official radio just to be safe. No change.
Googled around a bit and here is a fix that worked for me...
Dialer -> ##778# ->Call -> Edit -> 000000 -> modem settings ->Rev A
Switch to enable from eHRPD and then hit back once. Menu->Commit.
Solved for me, but I don't know if it has adverse effects...

This makes your phone use the "old" version of EvDO. Basically what all 3g phones that don't have 4g radios use. If your area doesn't have 4g, doing this change shouldn't effect you at all and might get you 3g if you are stuck in 1x.

You can in 3G with the Thunderbolt. I did it yesterday. I work in 4G but live in 3G, but this feature is what finally made me pick the TB over the Charge.
I started this morning with the 3G/4G toggle on 3G only, to save battery, and around lunch I switched 4G back on and it has been there since... I haven't had issues with 1X. Must be a regional thing.

Does anyone else lose 4g a lot?

I've tried WCDMA Preferred and GSM Auto (PRL) but I am constantly losing 4G switching back and forth in areas I have never had a problem.
Download the app called 'Network' in the Android market and set it to WCDMA only.
That isn't a solution but why wouldn't I just set it in the testing mode? Why download another app?
I lose 4g often too....and I go down to 2g....what happened to 3g? My old prepaid Cricket phone had a consistent 3g signal all over Tucson, while the 4g is really fast, it isn't reliable, and almost (almost) makes me wanna go back on cricket.
this radio is garbage.
my g2 was piss poor with 4g and this one is even worse.
I can watch it sit on the table and go from full bars of 4g to 2 bars of 2g/edge and STAY there.
sorry for the uninformed question, but is this something that can be fixed in a new rom, or mod?

It's not the radio. It's more likely the 4G signal in your area. I am in Atlanta and I have full bar 4G almost everywhere I go. At home it will drop down to 2G but I have wifi there.

Point #1 - You are incorrect. I am saturated with T-Mos "fake" 4G coverage and have never had a phone drop it like this one does.
Point #2 - What are you asking the other posted about 3G expectations. This phone doesn't have a 4G radio. T-Mo doesn't have 4G. They have 3G that they market as 4G.

Everyone has "fake" 4G coverage. LTE isn't technically classified as "4G" either, the specification calls for rates of at least 100/mbps. T-Mobile currently has faster and more widespread pre-4G coverage than any other carrier, and the phone does have a pre-4G radio. The phone does support HSDPA at rates up to 21Mbps, and does is in fact have a pre-4G radio. And as far as my other comment not being a solution, have you tried it before bashing it? I've had plenty of luck with that solution personally and I figured it would be kind of me to share, but I suppose I stand corrected.

What are data tweaks?
I have noticed like the iPhone 4 that if you touch that metal peice on the back around the camera the signal drops. I got a case that covers that up and that fixed all my 4g signal problems. My phone stays on 4g most of the time where I am. The T-Mobile network where I live works very well though.

No. They are different. Imagine that hspa+ is faster than 3G but not 4g so it's more like 3.5g. It is faster than regular 3G but your phone still doesn't have the hardware for the 4g network.

AT&T is calling their 4G, 4G, but technically there is NOTHING running 4G. For AT&T, 3G is capable of HSDPA(Download). 4G is the addition of HSUPA(Upload).
For our Captivates, specifically custom ROM's. Captivate based ROM's do NOT have HSUPA. i9000 based ROM's DO have HSUPA.
To answer your question, CM7 is a i9000 ROM and is running "4G"
And yes, LTE is something completely different
thanks kang for not making me say all that.
Thanks to both of you for clearing things up haha. I really appreciate it.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
The AT&T roms don't make any distinction between HSDPA (which shows as "H" on CM7) and UMTS (which shows as "3G"). So on an AT&T ROM you will only see "3G". Both are 3G as far as AT&T is concerned.
The new "official" Gingerbread leaks for the Captivate all say H+ in the corner instead of 3G as well... But the speed is the same.
I think only KI1 shows that. The ones released after it show regular3G.

Go into settings/wireless/more/mobile networks/network mode and check mark the one with lte. This should solve your problem
Did that but still showing 2G/3G and an H+ for my network connectivity. Could it be because T Mobile does not recognize this particular ROM yet and therefore has not authorized it to carry 4g? Kind of at a loss as what to do anybody with other suggestions please.

Its just as frequent as your last ics , the difference is 4g from T-Mobile never leaves the screen but you were still alternating 3g/4g just the same. Another thing is T-Mobile has less 4g towers than say sprint or atnt sooo really nothings changed. Enjoy !!!
TMO ROMs show 4G full time to avoid panic.
TMO calls HSPA14 and up "4G".
H+ is HSPA+21 and higher.
Phone automatically ramps down to H or "3G" when data connection is more or less idle. Under use, it'll ramp up to H+. Potential battery saving...
Nothing has changed compared with before, except the dummy icon.
