So sweet. Jawbone now has an update for the Jawbone ICON which allows it to pair as an A2DP device. This means I can route all sound to it: music, movies, navigation, FartDroid, Robo Defense, etc.
There has never hasn't been a fix for this since the 1.5 ROMs. I'm on Fresh 2.0d
This awesome earpiece can be had for around $75 if you look hard enough.
Happy he posted... I am very happy, since I already have an ICON but didn;t know this
maybe not a big issue with people on this forum but this was a huge android issue in general. pissed a lot of people off.

Holy ****. This just cluttered up this thread.
This was a huge deal with Android and Jawbone just solved it for me.
Good to know. Knew I got my Icon for something. Thanks for the info.

Can the ICON connect to the phone and allow voice dial ? Thats one feature I miss. All the crazy advances and this is one feature that hasnt been fixed. Oh well. By the way the Q1 does the ad2p thing and also allows 8 presets that allow the unit to at least connect and call out which is handy. It also allows you to connect hands free with just your voice. Not too big of a deal if your driving but if your a biker it's a pretty awesome feature ;-)
I wonder how hard would it be to program an app to wait for the button press on a headset and set it to use the voice recognition on the phone that is used by google search/nav etc...

Maybe it was a multi phone pairing issue, but I found that the Q1 didn't reconnect automatically if I walked away from the headset with the phone or vice versa. Also didn't like that the buttons were easy to press and hence a lot of pocket headset redials...
I am very stoked with the a2dp on the icon as that's the headset i had just before being convinced by someone else that the q1 was the way to go and since having gone back to the icon
Thanks for the info, I forget that the icon is updatable and haven't checked in a while...
r
seeing as this is a relatively active bluetooth-related thread, i was wondering if someone could answer a q for me.
im on fresh 2.0d and whenever I tried to play anything via A2DP in my car, the audio was sped up and always skipped about every second...has anyone else experienced this? if not, could you tell me which ROM you are using so I could give it a try?
appreciate any info anyone can offer...thanks

Here's a bit of info on the Jawbone ICON website: "To encourage Google to support voice dial via Bluetooth on the Android OS, vote at Google product ideas or post a reply on Motorola's DROID forum."
I have found that the Voice Search app works a little better than the Voice Dialer app on the Hero. I just place a shortcut on my home screen. If I open the app and say, "Call Dennis at Home," it will dial home right away. Not quite "hands free" dialing, but as close as I can get for now.
For those (like myself) that have been less than satisfied with the Bluetooth voice dialing in Froyo on our Captivates there may be a pretty good solution for you.
Not sure how long its been out but Vlingo includes a beta version of a feature called "Vlingo In Car" that actually supports bluetooth dialing among other things.
Tried it out the other day and...it works! And pretty good too.
I had tried "Choice Dialer" which claims that it supports bluetooth dialing but I was never successful at getting it to work...even a little.
So, if you have Froyo on your Cappy, and want to be able to bluetooth voice dial, then give Vlingo a try. It's available, for free, in the Marketplace.
I saw that earlier tonight, and was disappointed to find it requires Froyo.
I'm holding off for a beta that seems less buggy. Seems like a lot of varying issues on it.
Of course, maybe the real release is not far off.
But I'll be keeping this Vlingo option in mind. It may just motivate me to try the 2.2 again.
I downloaded it onto my Cog 2.2 B6 and it doesn't work at all. Won't recognize any input from the bluetooth headset. Even the built-in Google search dialer is better than this. My headset works fine during calls, and will even play media. And I could initiate voice calls on Windows Mobile (Voice Command) without touching the phone.
Any tips on how I can get Vlingo working?

Hey Ozone...you there? Still working for you?
I just installed the Cognition 2.2B8.1 specifically for this. This is what I am finding:
It will launch the Vlingo wiht the button, IF the phone is not asleep. Well, maybe it is launching if not asleep, but I don't know, as I get no audible, and the screen does not come on.
The other problem I have, which is not related to Vlingo, is that it seems that the phone does not hear me over BT. That's likely a rom problem.
Also, I find it does not dial automatically if I have more than 1 phone numbrer for someone, which for most I do. It just brings up the contact and the phone list and I have to choose one.
Is it working like that for you?
And, what Froyo build are you using?

Remember, its still a beta product but some of your problems are most likely related to the ROM.
I tried Cog Beta 8, briefly, and went back to beta 7 after bluetooth was totally screwed up.
As far as the list of numbers is concerned, it gives you the list when it's not sure of what type of number you requested ("Work"; "Home"; "Mobile"). Or, if you request a number type that a contact has multiples of (like more than one "Mobile" like I have).
While not perfect, over all it has worked pretty well...at least better than any other Bluetooth dialing solution that I have tried. YMMV.
Here is an update:
I re-flashed my phone and now Vlingo In Car doesn't work at all.
I'm still at Cog Beta 7 but now it does not respond to me through the headset.
I'm going to try a couple things and let you know what I find.
Love the big buttons in car mode, and voice recognition is a big improvement over trying to get Google search.
One problem I have is when the phone is turned so that the top faces to the right in car mode. The basic interface shows with the correct orientation no matter which way the phone is turned, top to the right, left or up. But in car mode, when the phone is turned so the usb connection faces right, hitting any button results in the next interface being upside down. Works just fine if usb faces left or the phone is upright.
I'm on cog 2.2 beta 6. I have a blueant s4 and voice dialing is working well. It took a few tries and I'm not sure what caused it to start working, but it is. This is using the vlingo incar app. It works for calls, messaging, and searches (all I've tried so far).
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
The latest update for me: out works part time. It of not near as accurate on finding contacts as Google Voice Search.
One thing that I miss compared to MS V pice Command is the capability got it to work even if not in car mode.
I've tried Vlingo multiple times on my Captivate running Perception with a BlueAnt T1, not only does the T1 keep saying it isn't supported if I have it set to Vlingo, but the application itself is as close to useless as possible. No matter which number I tell it to call my mom at, it ALWAYS dials her cell. Additionally, I tried to follow some of the commands under the What Can I Say? area and they all opened a web browser.
Unfortunately, I paid for this worthless junk.
Voice Dialing under Perception 10.x and above works fine with my Jawbone Icon and I am trying to see if I can get Voice Dialing to work with my Alpine kce-400BT unit in my truck. Otherwise I have not had any issues with it at all.
HTH,
Charlie
I am using the Bluetooth voice dialing on Paragon RC5.1 with my Pioneer FH-P800BT car stereo and it works perfectly.
So what software works perfectly for you?

Does Vlingo give you consistently accurate dialing? If it does, I'm glad for you
While I can get it to dial via blue tooth, I find it doesn't do so consistently accurately, based on useing on 3 different BTooth devices, and even if just using without blue tooth.
Also, it has no validation. Must either trust it to dial right, or press from a list it pulls up.
Choice Dialer would ideal, if only it worked. It is 10 times worse than Vlingo, for me.
Nothing I've tried works anything near as good as Microsoft Voice Command did.

vlingo def superior in recognition. I don't use the feature but set it up for my dad on his new captivate.
I did 10 test dials with it with only hiccup in which is it choose a very similar sounding name rather than what i was trying to dial.
Did Vlingo work via Bluetooth? I can't get mine to recognize any devices. Called Samsung and they basically told me too bad.

Depending on what ROM you use, you may need to use Blue Tooth Launch.
It may be that Vlingo works fairly well with direct voice on the phone, but poor on blue tooth. At least it is quite poor for me. The times it does find the right person to call, it brings up a list of all phones to choose, instead of dialing "Mobile" if that is what I ask for.
Vlingo doesnt recognize many of my contacts. like I have Marko in my phonebook...and when i say Call Marko or Call Marko mobile or Dial Marko mobile, or whatever...it doesn't find it, instead it finds marco with a C. And i don't have any Marcos in my address book. WTH. I wont even talk about other names it doesn't even recognize at all, it just launches the browser and searches for a completely different thing. FOr some names i have last names as well, and i clearly say the last name and it doesn't work. Beh. I was hoping this app will do better. at least be smart enough to recognize marko from marco, its darn too easy. beh lol.
I just finished installing all the stereo parts in my car only to find out that my Captivate won't work with the voice dialing of the stereo. I guess it's the phone's fault as my wife's Focus works just fine as did my old HTC Pure. She won't trade phones with me so I'm stuck trying to find a ROM that has this.
With Samsung stating it will be fixed (added) in 2.2.1; does that mean only the 2.2.1 ROMS will have this feature? I'm currently running Cognition 4.3.1 and it does not have it; but would like to only try new ROMS that have it. What ROMS do have the feature?
Thank you for your input.
Firefly supports voice dialing. You have to start the Voice Dialling app and then say the command.
What I'm looking for is what the Droid Incredible has. I paired it to my stereo and when I hit the call button on the stereo; it launched what appeared to be a bluetooth voice dialer application that allowed me to speak into the stereo.
I just tried firefly and it did have that app, but it crashed as soon as I tried it. It also crashed the music app, failed to mount the storage drives, crashed when trying to put it in debugging mode and pretty much was unstable since it booted. I then tried to use one click odin and it went to a blue screen half way through the process. It'll be a fun night.
Probably not what you want to hear, but my BT in the car works great on my 'stock' set up. I think it has more to do with the kernel/ modem configuration than the ROM though.

I can't get Choice Dialer to work well at all. ONe example: "CAll Tom Jones", it says "CAll Tom Jones?", I say "Yes", it says "Try again". Argh...
ANd most of th time it just doesn't understand me at all.
I believe this is the apk you need. I know cog doesn't come with it. This is an old one so I don't know if there is a newer version available but when you pair your bluetooth and hit the voice command on your stereo or bluetooth set, make this the default app when the prompt shows up. It won't give you a voice prompt but if you wait 2 secs and then speak it should dial for you. Only problem is that your phone has to be awake but at least you can use voice commands from your bluetooth set. Just leave your phone plugged in and awake while your in the car. This is the only option I have found.
That worked.
Thank you for the apk. That works.

Boy, ain't that the truth. It really chaps me that the one thing that should be solid on a Cell now-a-days is voice dial. Can't believe that OLD OLD technology from Microsoft on Winmo SHINES so much better than Android. Maybe that's the only thing that does, but in my opinion, one of the most important things for a cell phone...at least if you anticipate wanting to use it while driving.
That was a tom jones joke ...
I'm glad the Voice Dialer apk worked. I couldn't get it to work on any Captivate ROMs. Most reoriented i9000 ROMs have a working version, but I find all of the i9000 ROMs to be severely lacking in performance compared to KB1 ROMs.
My preferred solution in either case is to use Bluetooth Launch and Voice Search. Bluetooth Launch can be found here. Run it from the app drawer, it brings up a full list of installed apps and available activities. Choose Voice Search, and then the "VoiceRecognition" activity (must have Google's Voice Search installed first of course). Then, hit your call button, and set Bluetooth Launch as the default activity when it asks. From then on, your call button will launch Voice Actions, which support not only "call <contact>" but also a ton of other commands, including controlling music, text msgs, etc. I love sending texts without touching my phone, and it works flawlessly for me so far.
So after realizing that my brand new $650 phone did not have bluetooth voice dialing, I decided to do some work.... good news.
HTC did not include the VoiceDialer.apk with the Sensation. Why? No clue!
After getting it here...
http://download615.mediafire.com/m4f6kpd3g06g/mdh1m1x0dzh/VoiceDialer.apk
I was able to prompt my car stereo's Voice Dial button, but the Voice Dial still did not want to work correctly, but... just get ChoiceDialer+ from the market, and all is good.
How did you install the apk I would like to try this before I return the phone. Sorry if this is a stupid question.
Connect your phone to your computer via USB cable, and switch to Disk mode or Mass storage mode or whatever you call it.... drag it onto your phone. Use Astro or Root explorer to navigate to your phones folder, and just open the apk to install, and then restart.
Again, I dont think the voice dialer itself will give you prompts, so get a third party app like ChoiceDialer+
I can't get the voice dialer to repeat what I say for confirmation.
After I press my bluetooth, voice dialer opens up, I say my command, and then a pop-up comes up asking me to press ok or cancel.
Anybody got any luck with this?
I have been using vlingo since launch for bt dialing and works great. The app even has an in car mode and can read texts and emails. Of course you can turn that off as well.
I just use vlingo as my default app when long pressing the search button. So upon a long press, vlingo launches and listens via bluetooth and you can say your command from searching whatever to navigate to wherever to call whomever in your address book. Try it out, it's free. You can always uninstall if you do not like the functionality.
Is there an option for me to press the button on my bluetooth to trigger the app? It is illegal to use the phone while driving up here in Canada.
Make sure voicedialer.apk is installed, and then install a third party voice dialer like Vlingo or Choice Handsfree. You need that voicedialer.apk installed to trigger the prompt when you press the Bluetooth button on your headset... When you press it, it should bring up a prompt asking you which program you'd like to use.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
my voicedialer Force closed
after i installed choice dialer, i got the same menu still.
I press my bluetooth, say something, and then on my phone screen, it gives me a prompt as to what to do (in this case, who to call).
I don't want to touch my phone while driving.
The voicedialer app worked perfectly fine with my nexus one with the same bluetooth headset, no idea why it's not working on my sensation.
I think HTC needs to do something about this. I just bought the Sensation yesterday and didn't realize this issue till this morning. I am using the BlueAnt Q2. Call recognition works fine. But using the voice commands on the Q2 is a bust cause the device is no compatible. WTF.

I have the same situation, Q2, Sensation, hopefully a rooted ROM will fix this issue.
Sorted
I have a HTC Desire and have long been frustrated at its inability to voice dial via bluetooth. Last week I was annoyed by HTC's attitude to a Gingerbread update for the Desire, so I took the plunge and rooted my phone, installing Cyanogen mod 7.
Wonderful change, it's like having a new phone! One bonus is that, just today I decided to try voice dialling in my car, and it works perfectly! Paired the phone with my Alpine car radio, pressed the phone button on the radio and up came the message 'voice dialling', I said 'call John' and a female voice replied 'calling John' and there I was speaking, totally handsfree. Miraculous I thought, why couldn't HTC manage that?
So, all credit to Cyanogen for a superb update to my phone and I'll be donating, although it's free.
Same issues here. HTC seems to have rushed this one out the door. Besides the lack of BT voice dialing, I'm seeing hangs/crashes in the phone dialer app, and rapid battery drain when playing games. I wish there was a way to turn off Sense; it really adds nothing to the Android experience and usually gets in the way.
installs fine but keeps force closing and does not work with bt and no confirmation prompts. found vlingo but it does not work with sensation.in fact, the app will lock your phone and you will have to restore phone if you can even manage to get it installed in first place. so please stop telling people to use this app. you should be ashamed of yourself.

I've been reading through the threads and have been most interested in voice dialing. I had it on my HD2 and it was quite useful as I use a bluetooth headset as my primary means of talking on the phone. I just hate holding the phone up to my head. In any case, voice dialing IS possible without using BT. I'm sure most of you know this as all you have to do is hold the search button on the phone for a second to get a voice command prompt pop up where you can simply say "call <contact name>" or "dial <phone number>" and it will do as told. I have no modifications on my phone, it is as stock as stock can come.
With my headsets, it used to be where I held the activate button for a moment, a tone would play in my ear, and a voice would say "say a command". Keep in mind, that was on my HD2. The sensation doesn't come with BT voice dialing by default, it seems, and it does appear that there are work-arounds to it like the apk listed above. In fact, I've seen some relatively talented people figure out how to make things work, that weren't supposed to work in the first place. Also keep in mind that voice dialing and other functions are software based, and simply writing the proper code can overcome pretty much anything.
With that being said, thefattexan, I've seen you call other posters and responders liars, and in this thread alone, you've told someone that they're "full of crap". In all honesty, those comments are not appreciated, and at least one thread was closed by a moderator because of attacks like that.
Let me submit to you, that just because you've never seen or heard of something, does not mean that it doesn't exist. Simply because you could not make it work, does not mean that someone else wasn't able to. Calling someone a liar based only on your own experiences is pretty much out of line, and your behavior is somewhat disgraceful. So I am asking you nicely, to please refrain from that sort of behavior. Maybe if someone says they can do something that you are not able to, rather than call them a liar, ask them how they accomplished it and you may learn something in the bargain. Obviously, they tried something that you didn't, and voila. Otherwise, don't say anything, because carrying on like you do will only result in the moderators banning you.
for those that agree, click the thanks button and show the love.
I have had the same problems with the voice dialer apk. It installs just fine but it force closes when trying to use from the bluetooth headset.
I tried vlingo and some other apps but they are too complicated and usually require some interaction with the phone.
I want it to work just like my Thunderbolt. When my phone is in my pocket I can press the bluetooth call button and be prompted to speak now. The say "call John" and then prompted, "calling john" and the phone dials the number. Very simple and easy to work without any interaction.

I have seen your past posts and I can see you do not play well with others. Man, are you a native Texan? You are the most....well how can I put this...ignorant person here. This is XDA. A place where developers and users help each other troubleshoot things here.
And your great additions to this community? Just badmouthing everyone that does not share your view. Name calling really got you where you are today /sarcasm.
I do not know what your problem is and why you resort to name calling literally everytime you post.
Back to topic and to simply replying to you. I have been the early adopters of vlingo. I even paid for the app when it was first released. I have to say I did indeed install this via market when I got the phone because a week ago the in car setting kept fc'ing on me and I uninstalled and reinstalled the version I found in the market.
The funny thing is I tried looking again on the market and I do see that it is marked incompatible with the Sensation like you said, but I did uninstall the app and reinstalled fresh from the market and not use any restores.
I am done sparring with words with you and you can keep calling me and every one else here names....I don't know maybe you were bullied as a child, not given enough attention as a child, or maybe you found out that the Easter Bunny is a myth *gasp*....

Hi everyone,
I have some problems while using my bluetooth headset.
What I'm trying to accomplish here is to push the headset's button, start google now and launch a command (mostly calling a contact).
On stock rom, if I try that, I got a black screen with the word "Initialization" and it gets stuck on it.
(in google now settings the option about bluetooth headsets is on).
I tried with a couple of apps like "bluetooth launch" and "voice command", and almost all the time google now is launched but it ask for "press the microphone and start talking" (I'm translating from Italian...), so I always have to interact physically with the phone.
For what I've seen, maybe the only way to fix this is using tasker with autovoice (as seen in some xda video tutorials), but I still have to try.
Does anyone has this problem?
Thank you!
It is old an Android OS issue on non-english language configured device. Even Android 6.0 is affected. It has been assigned but still no fix
