Currently I have my Android phone setup to use a numeric pin to lock the device. Unfortunately this means everytime the phone goes to idle (or directly by me pressing the power button) I have to enter the pin to use the phone. There are many instances when I don't want to have to do so, such as while driving when I want to be able to quickly and more safely glance at the phone.
Basically I want to lock the phone on an as needed basis, by simply tapping on an app on the homescreen (or perhaps even a different key combination e.g. volume up + power button). Does such a thing exist?
Power Control Plus works exactly as you described. You can toggle the lockscreen with the press of a widget:

Additionally, I like Unlock w/ WiFi, its automated:

Ummm widget locker
I have been using Tap Tap App to do this.
Screen Off and lock is perfect.
But I think there is still a problem when unlocking ur screen, u still need to press the power button...
No Lock can help on keeping ur screen off but not lock, so that u can press other buttons to trigger ur phone. But it seems that after reboot, the app is not working>.<
thanks for the suggestions! I'll give them all a try.

You could download PHM Suspend PowerToy and either put it in your Start Menu apps or map one of the buttons to that program using using the button mapper in control panel.
There are many applications that allow this, and there are ways to do it manually also. VITO ButtonMapper is one. Search the forum and you'll find more options.
Alternatively, you could set your phone to turn the screen off after less time. Or you could set a long press of the hang-up key to lock the screen. Both of these options are available in control panel.

So I'm looking for a Lock Screen program that will fit my needs and so far I've come up very blank...
Here are my needs:
1. Lock the screen when I hit the power button.
2. Prevent the phone from powering off when holding down the End Key when the device is locked.
My device is a Touch Pro 2. The built in Lock screen works great at preventing a power down, but it doesn't lock when I press the power button.
Most of the replacement programs S2U2, PocketShield, TouchLockPro, LockMeLite... they all lock when I hit the power button but they don't prevent powering off when holding down the End Key. S2U2 is supposed to have a setting that will lock this but it doesn't work.
So, any recommendations?
Okay, I found a program (see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=649695&highlight=lock) that makes the default lock screen show up whenever the system goes into stand by.
Ok, the story is, my phone goes to sleep every 30 secs to save battery. And since I'm still very excited about it, I turn it on quite often, just to check . And the only way to turn on from sleep (as far as I know) is pressing the power button. Well, that means that button will be pressed a lot! I'm just worrying that it will soon have problems. It would be much cooler if we can touch some Android button down there, Home button for example, to turn on the phone. Do you know anyway to do that?
PS: I tried to google as well as search through out this forum, but the keywords are pretty common, so it's really hard though.
I wouldn't want the capacitive buttons activating my phone, think of all the butt-dialing
I think Widget Locker allows for any hardware button to wake up the device, so then you'd be able to distribute the fun between your volume rocker and the power button.
Widget locker does allow the use of the volume rocker to wake up the phone.
a short term fix or you might be to got o settings-->Applications-->Development-->Stay awake....
so as long as you are charging the screen will not sleep. dont forget to change the setting back if you walk away for a bit... or go to bed
Thanks guy. I think the volume button is good enough

i hate it must reach for power button to wakeup!
i like "Simply Lockscreen", it also turns on cappy with volume buttons.
give it a try
On a similar note, do you all have any app tips that will allow me to do something special with the volume button while the screen is off (maybe long press or double click, or press both volume buttons at once) that will in turn toggle silent/vibrate on and off?
I have a pattern lock on my phone, and I was wondering if there was a way to set the lock screen so when I press the home button the pattern view shows.
The way that I would like this to work is as follows:
I pick my phone up and wake it up in my preferred way (double click home button), I then check to see if I have any notifications, if so I double click and interact that way, but if not, again press the home button to show the 9 dots and allow me to put my pattern in.
Is this a possibility, I'm currently running CM13.
Thanks

Hello All. I just enabled the function to unlock the phone by hard pressing the home button under Settings- Display- Navigation Bar. I find that this only works if your screen timed out and not if you shut the display off with power button on side. Is this working as it should or do you see this as a bug? Personally I think it should unlock with a home button hard press no matter what. Thanks.
Mine goes to unlock every time. Iris/Face Recog or pattern....
I am using no security, just swipe to unlock.
I do think that that is a bug, I'm using the hard press to unlock feature without security too, and the hard press works even after locking the screen manually.
Screen timeout and screen lock have to different settings.
So if you screen times out at 30sec
But the lock kicks in at 1min.
Then your be able to simple press the home button and go right back into the home menu after the 30sec but before the 1min mark.
If you press the power button it normally auto locks.
Meaning you cant press the home button to launch into the home screen.
Now this is all if you have no Security on.
I had the exact same issue as you did after I installed Samsung Oreo Beta Program. Then I found out that for some reason that the option got turned off. So you might want to double check and see if it is still enabled. To do this, do the following two things below:
1. Enable Unlock with Home Button
• Settings
• Display
• Navigation Bar
• Buttons
• Unlock with Home Button
*Then make sure Unlock with Home Button is enabled*
2. Then I would double check your phones Lock Screen & Security by doing the following:
• Settings
• Lock screen and security
• Screen Lock type
*Make sure Swipe is enabled*
Worst 8+ option...
1. Home button on AOD is disabled.
2. Unlock with home button (hard press to unlock) is disabled.
Still, hard press on home button area on lock screen (AOD), unlock the phone?!
Does anyone have a clue how to disable this crappy option?
