Hi
It seems that the auto brightness of the Desire S is very bright even in total darknness and doesn't change a lot with the light.
Is there anything that you can do about that?
Beside using power, it is so bright, that if you sit in total darkness, then you are almost blinded, e.g. using it when driving at night.
/Michael
yes it is
I do agree with you on this.
On WM you could do edits to the registry is something like this possible on Andriod? (noob to Android, just switched over and i like what i see)
I think it's the same with many HTC devices. Especially my Wildfire :/
you can try one of these apps
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.haxor&feature=search_result
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.angrydoughnuts.android.brightprof
i was always keeping screen brightness on ~7% on hero and now, i see, with desireS i'll have to do the same...
Yes, I am also using manual control through a widget.
/Michael
If your phone is rooted you can edit the brightness levels of auto setting in framework.
You can use tasker to finetuning screen brightness

RootDim (formerly known as ScreenDim) lets you set the screen brightness on backlit screens below what the OS normally allows, which is handy for amateur astronomy where the lowest normal OS backlight setting (even with a red nightmode) leaks enough through the black pixels to damage night vision. Moreover, SuperDim lets have several brightness profiles, and to include nightmode settings (enabled by ChainFire3D or Cyanogenmod's render fx) as part of the brightness profile.
Needs root.
Public domain, source code available. In Market (search for RootDim).
Now in Market (free, no ads).
I just uploaded version 1.10, which restores low brightness settings after the screen is turned off and back on (the OS normally was restoring its brighter screen).
Works well, but seems to mess with the functionality of the notification/charge LED (Nexus One, CM7.1)

I assume this is when you use the other lights option to toggle these lights, or when you restore a profile, right?
In version 1.11 (just uploaded), I no longer restore other lights when a profile is loaded--this should help with your problem, as long as you don't touch the other lights. Eventually, I may add an option to choose which lights get restored from a profile.
I originally made SuperDim for setting very low backlight settings on LCDs, and so I made it not work on non-LCD screens (e.g., OLED). But I've since realized that the profile feature might be useful for non-LCD users as well, so I've released version 1.20 that supports non-LCD screens. It's in Market. While I was at it, I cleaned up the code a little, made it more javaish (I'm new to java).
My MyTouch 4G just seems to turn the screen off totally if i go below 20 brightness, it dims but then shuts off.
Doesn't work at all with Dell Streak 5
I'm sorry to say, but Screen Filter does the same, but doesn't require root.

Actually, all Screen Filter does is dim the colour of the pixels. This app actually modifies the screen backlight level. E.g. Screen Filter just makes the screen gray-er.
Also, works good on Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, but the backlight completly switches of when set to under 15.

Screen filter merely adds a black semi-transparent overlay across the screen, making it look dimmer.
This app adjusts the backlight, which means darker black levels on the screen.

Your eyes would probably care if you were doing amateur astronomy under a dark sky (which is the primary purpose for SuperDim). Screen Filter doesn't turn down the backlight, and on a lot of devices there is enough backlight leaking through even completely black pixels to damage night vision. You can try this experiment. Turn a backlit device to a completely black screen (maybe view a black jpg) and take it to a completely dark room. Let your eyes dark adapt. The "black" screen will in fact probably be quite grey. (If it's really black, that's probably because you have an OLED device.)
When I do amateur astronomy, I am not infrequently looking to see objects way dimmer than backlit black pixels.
I'd like to do something about the screen turning completely off issue.
To that end, I need people to do some experiments for me, and I will be very grateful (I'll also give a free full version of Force2SD as compensation for the first couple of experimenters, if you want it--just email me). The first experiment is this. Download SuperDim 1.22, now up in the Market. Press the menu key, and choose "Turn on safe mode" (you can tell safe mode is on, because next time you pull up the menu, it says "Turn off safe mode"). Now, turn brightness down to 10. Does your screen turn off?
I should warn that very low brightness levels can be very low indeed. For instance, if I am outdoors on a sunny day, I have trouble telling the difference between brightness 4 and off. So you need to be in a dark area--I recommend a room without windows and with the lights off.
If the screen does not turn off at 10, turn it down to 5, and then 1. Let me know if it ever turns off.
I am guessing that in safe mode, it doesn't turn off at all.
What safe mode does is it makes very low brightness settings not persist. So if you are in safe mode and leave SuperDim, you lose your low brightness setting.
I'd also appreciate it if people who can normally turn their brightness down to 1 could do some experiments with safe mode. Specifically, I'd like to know if moving the slider to 1 in safe mode has the same effect on screen brightness as moving the slider to 1 in non-safe mode has. (Again, if you're one of the first few experimenters and want a free copy of Force2SD, email me.)
On my Archos 43, brightness 1 is very, very dim, but the screen is still on. And I can't tell the difference between safe mode and non-safe mode, except that in safe mode, the settings don't persist after I leave SuperDim.
Tried this app on my desire HD.
Great idea, but when I reach 10 and below, the backlight doesn't get lower.
If I use the adb method (don't remember the command), I can set the backlight manually all the way down to 0.
There is no difference with or without safe mode on.

What happens? And does safe mode work?
I agree, doesn't work with Desire HD/Inspire 4G, safe mode only dims the brightness but no lower than normal, and only dims the brightness on the screen, regardless of your settings

I found a bug. In fact, the bug is such that I have no idea how it was managing to work on my device at all! In any case, I think I fixed it. Try 1.23 (should be in Market or here) and see if it does the job. If not, I have some more ideas.
I really love my Inspire, especially w/ Honeyogen installed. But the problem of viewing the screen in direct sunlight is a major problem for me, one that I cant seem to find a soultion for.
Ive tried different screen covers & different ROMs & even different Kernals, yet the Inspires Slcd screen is still terrible in direct sunlight, as all I see is my reflection.
My question is this... is there anyway to hack the screen to increase the brightness beyond the "normal" or "stock" brightness levels?
I would think that if developers can hack volume levels for the external speaker & also freq values for overclocking the cpu, that the same could be possible for the screen brightness!?
Thanks, i appreciate your thoughts!

Thank you for this question. I am interested in a solution to this as well.
is your screen on auto brightness? take it off and adjust yourself. it will adjust to light depending on how much and how little you get.
If your rom is cm7 base go to menu, settings, cyanogenmod settings, display, automatic backlight, scroll down to light levels, check use custom, other levels, (this is what I do) change 1st 3 screen profiles from 41 to 61, 61 to 81, 81 to 101, then hit save and apply. The higher the # the brighter the screen. Those settings are pretty good on battery and definitely helps on making the screen more viewable outside and in bright rooms. Hour this helps

Thanks for trying, but of course I've set my brightness levels myself. Auto-brightness doesn't do it for me.
I'm just surprised that there aren't hacks for screen brightness. Just as speakers levels & the CPU are governed to a certain threshold in stock configs, I would think the screen is governed and has much higher brightness levels it can go beyond.

Yes, my ROM is CM7 based. But I assume these custom levels are for the Auto-Brightness mode?
Also, where exactly do I make these changes? Because the "screen" values are already at 41, 61, 81, 112 and so forth. So I assume these values have been changed by my ROM developer or are they CM7 defaults? Or do I have it all wrong? LOL. Thanks again.

Yes, this is for auto brightness. You do have the correct defaults. I bumped the first 3 profiles up by 20 and screen is brighter at lower levels.

Ok, but my question is does this actually make the screen any brighter than the highest stock brightness level?
Or does this just change the values, so that the lower values are brighter, but no brighter than the stock highest level?
no brighter than brightest stock value

So why can you developers increase & hack the speaker and the CPU values and MAX out their potential, yet the screen's potential is wasted and we are stuck with dark screens that can't be seen very well outdoors?
It doesn't make sense to me. The screen backlight must have more potential, they don't push ANY hardware to it's max in stock configurations.
Come on developers, we need you again!
FALSE - juice defender's ultimate (maybe even pro) app can adjust it higher than the 100% brightness value. Only problem with this is that you have to let it control your brightness settings, but there's a bug that doesn't allow you to install apk's manually - so you have to disable the brightness while you install apks (or you could just install through adb lol). so yes, there is a way.

Um no Juicedefender does'nt raise the screen brightness ANY higher than you normally can w/ the stock brightness slider. All that does is mess with the Auto-Brightness settings.
Alot of people seem to get the Auto-Brightness settings confused with what I am asking. I want to be able to raise the brightness beyond the MANUAL brightness slider. If you raise the auto-brightness setting, your STILL limited to the max value that's on the manual brightness slider. I want THAT manual setting to be pushed beyond the normal "stock" value, which I guess is impossible......can't understand why when almost every other hardware is hacked to allow better performance.

Okay sorry just looked at juice defender again. It allows you to only change the shape of the brightness curve. As for forcing a brighter screen level I'm blank on that. Have you manually set it to 100% and its still. Not bright enough?

You cant overclock the values of your android hardware "screen" for brightness and dimness since it can only work properly on a given threshold hence any more than that is negligible.
CM7 is a great ROM but for me, Sense roms have more advantages on the evo. One of the advantages of CM7 is the ability to completely customize the auto brightness function. When I ran CM7 nightlies I spent about an hour dimming the lights to program it perfectly. When you're in a dark room you don't want to pull your phone out of your pocket and blind everyone around you. When you're out in the sun, you want to be able to actually see the screen. Unfortunately, it seems like the sense auto brightness does a horrible job of getting the phone really dim in the dark and doesn't react quick enough in the sun. There are so many widgets out there for people to quickly adjust their screen brightness because the auto isn't good enough. This is ridiculous! The evo 4G is capable of having the perfect auto-brightness. We shouldn't have to be stumbling to click on a widget to self adjust the brightness.
I've searched all over the interwebs and nothing like this exists for non-CM7 Android devices. Someone please either port the CM7 auto brightness customization settings or create an app!!! Something similar to the old school Lumens app from Windows Mobile. You would be a hero to many.
Also, I would love to do this but I have zero programming skills.
I created an app that does this exactly (it's in beta at the moment):
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.vito.lux
How well it performs depends on how good the light sensor on your device is. The app does have data filtering to try and get better readings from bad sensors, though.

Just installed CM7.1.0 and haven't yet found all the settings but stumbled upon some good ones already. A brightness one would be great because I would LOVE for my phone to go brighter in direct sunlight and dimmer in controlled areas and in the dark. I want to tweak mine as you described. Is this in the Cyanogenmod settings within the Menu->Settings menu or is it somewhere else?

Yeah, and look for auto, and 'other' there is awesome control in there. You can even control how bright your capacitive buttons light up, and what level of light they respond to.
Really nice feature.
To the poster who is working on this, I'll def be having a look. Thanks.

Is it possible to tweak my setting so that my phone would recognize max brightness at 50% instead of 100%?
I like to control the brightness of my phone using the widget(setting Dim&100%), but 100% is too bright. the other options are Dim,40%,100%,auto which is a bit inconvenient when i wan to go back to dim from 40%.
I know this is not really an issue but is the a way to tweak(without installing any program from the market)?
Don't think that is possible. I think the max you can set in the settings, is the max the device pixels can go.

Hi guys,Iam not sure auto brightness works for me? Can someone tell me if its fine on they're device? With my htc one i had auto brightness ticked and if i went from a dark room to a room with light ........... i would see the screen get brighter, as it was meant to, but on this phone iam seeing no change? unless its very subtle!! I have auto brightness ticked and the brightness bar just above half way just as i had done on my htc one! If i untick auto brightness then the brightness near blinds me lol so iam not sure why it isnt working in auto mode!
Its because on Sony phones, this change is more slowly so it appers to you that light is always the same "its slow, so your eyes can get used to new setting"..
It is more natural than change in one second.
I have tried this by sticking the phone under a led lamp to check it and the post advice this is correct. You have to concentrate on the screen to notice it changing.
