Anyone else having this ISSUE? My last phones all had like 4-6% standby time on the battery. But this g2x has been 64-83%. If this can get fixed I think my battery will be much much better!
What can be causing this?
when you say 64-83% how many hours has it been in standby? What else is using the battery? I know the G2X in my office has like 70% standby but that's standby from 14 hours and it's still at 92% battery life. (work phone so pretty much just sitting in the office until we need it)
Standby usually drains faster if you're in an area with no cell signal from what I've noticed.

This is very important to note. As the signal gets lower, your antenna has to increase power to maintain a connection with the tower. The lower your signal, the more battery required to keep a connection

I have the same widgets on the G2x that I have on my Nexus S. I have pure calendar and pure calendar agenda both set to update when the calendar updates. I am still leaning towards more with the 4G struggeling or something.
I've always thought umts was pure 3G while hspa was an update to that which in turn you could get the hspa+. However my connection always says umts, yet I do get way above 3mb dl on the speedtest. It always gets between 4-7mb dl.
The battery life on this android reminds me of when I had the Eris, just blah!!

I have the EXACT same issue with cell standby. I think it's the 4g connection as mine is constantly switching between 4g and 2g (never 3G)
I can't remember can you click on the "cell standby" tab in 2.2 to get additional information? It will usually say something like xx% time without signal.
yes you can click on it but that option is not showing. I was thinking just like I could my Eris was place into airplane mode take it out and it would correct the cell standby issue. But the xx% without signal is not showing. Well at least on mine it doesn't.
I don't think it ever says 3G. Mine goes from 4G to 2g. I just traveled to Indianapolis and pulled 6mb down but at home we don't have 4g yet even though it says 4g. My download at home was the same as my nexus one = 700k
So while I see it drop to 2g... I think they replaced the 3G icon with a straight 4G icon.
Plus I thought utms was edge?

I was having the same issue, and battery life was terrible.
Performing a full factory reset as well as completely draining the battery several times solved the issue for me.
Before the factory reset Battery Monitor was reporting heavy battery use even while idle, after the reset it only uses 2-5mA while idle compared to over 150mA before.
Today I went from 5:45 AM to 4:30 PM and am only down to 70% charge left.
same exact issue here. My usage habits have not change from my mytouch 4g which only showed a few percent of cell standy and phone idle. I dont get it, but i think that is what is killing my battery.

We do have that option. Settings-->Wireless Networks --> Mobile Networks-->Network Mode --> WCDMA Only (3G & 4G Only)

I live in non LTE and have had great battery life normally (w/o LTE switched off)... I am on a two week vacation in the DC area... I was getting great battery life with 4G connectivity... however, since the outage... i have regained 4G connectivity but my battery life is plunging! Anyone notice anything like this? (BTW, i have not made any changes on my phone recently)
I have noticed that whenever i turn my screen off, the phone is showing 0 signal bars and it takes 5-10 secs for it to go to 4 bars, which I have been getting regularly in DC.

I have had a similar experience, but I also flashed a new rom that same day. I originally thought it was just the new rom. I live in a 4G area.
No change post-4G outage. But my battery was never great before the 4G outage either. Actually, it's always quite sucked.
Odd thing is, DURING the outage, I was either on 1x or had NO data service, and my battery didn't improve then either.

Sounds like a bad battery, I would try to exchange it through Verizon... These phones aren't crazy bad on batteries, most people either have a defect or have too much running at one time...
P.S. horrible service and battery after the outage here in Philly as well, was awesome before...

I don't think that was the case...when a 4g phone or any phone for that matter gets a signal less than it is supposed to, usually it will continue searching for 4g or 3g. That eats up more battery than even being connected to 4g at all. When the outage happened or I'm not in a 4g area I just turn 4g off.

Mine spiked to about 300mA at idle from 40ish after the outage.
No new apps or settings. Reboot didn't work, setting to 3g only or 4g only or auto in the settings, reinstalling a lot of apps. Nothing I did could fix it, so I had to factory reset. Was a lot less painful than I thought it would be, the Market installing all my apps automatically was amazing to see.
Its OK now.

When I'm at work my phone goes in and out of signal a lot while in the office. When I go outside I've 4G and 3 bars. The temp of my battery has been at 118F before and the battery drains about 50% per half hour.
Are there any techniques or apps out there that will solve this? Airplane mode works best when in the office, but of course that sucks.

I live in NYC and am hitting up subways quite often. I've noticed a major decrease in battery life whenever getting out of the subway due to not having any signal underground. The phone is constantly searching for 4G and a Signal and it drains.
Everytime I hit up the subway I stick my phone in airplane mode since I know I won't get a signal anyway, and my battery doesn't drain a lick. Maybe this could help?

is there a wifi network you can connect to at the office? I'm in a similar situation at my office, for whatever reason the connection to the mobile network is incredibly spotty and unreliable in most places in my building, so I just connect to wifi.
otherwise, have you tried just turning off the data connection, rather than putting it into airplane mode? you'd still be able to use your phone and sms/mms (in theory anyway, depending on signal strength) and you could just turn mobile data back on when you need it. going from full off to 4G mode has always been a lot faster on my phone than either airplane mode or forcing it to stick with 3G.
I agree with number5toad, sometimes forcing 3g isn't always easy with the phone. But 2x battery app really helps my battery life!

If you are rooted, get SetCPU from here at XDAdev. You can set a profile so it will underclock your phone while the screen is off which in my experience, completely balances out the effects of the battery drain for searching for a signal. I know this doesn't exactly address your issue, but it will definitely help save battery.
I've had the HOX for about a week now and I love it but I wish battery life was a bit better. I've gotten to about 50% with only a little over an hour of on screen time.
Here's what my settings are:
Auto-sync off, wifi off, gps off, brightness about 15%, and I'm running CleanROM SE. I do live in a LTE however, possibly that's what's killing my battery? I also have a CPU editor running on battery saver mode.
Any help?

Try keeping WiFi on when your in range. It seems to be better than the cell data for battery life.

In my own experience LTE will chew you battery like nothing. Running apps like battery savers etc... actually doesn't save your battery it kills them faster... as they require process to run in the background... just my own tick on the subject.
Switch LTE off and I'm running on 4G I get around 1mb rate up and down for transfer so that's just as good as high speed internet. I'm not going to complain.
Screen brightness is at 35%

Data on
All others off
I'll average about 19hrs of battery life. Less if I'm going nuts on it like during weekdays at work.
On the weekend I can get 1day 7hours... ishh.

Download timelines free from the play store and periodically look at it to see if apps are continuously using CPU. Some do and need to be closed constantly. Facebook is an example of that.
I would force 2G also unfortunately that's not an option here in town. It's now either 3G, 4G or LTE 2G networks aren't available anymore... sigh.

Thats too bad because calls and texts sent over 3g consume almost twice as much battery. Time to start using google voice!
Your telling. I tried to get 2G on using the GSM only. I can make calls but there's no more data stream on 2G anymore. GSM band once it seems your attempting to make a data connection switches automaticly to WCDMA Preferred.
I wouldn't expect anything less in a Metro area lol... I guess if I was at the cottage I could bounce off the GSM towers to get my service a 2G lol.

Hey well you know what thats not that bad. Use the 2G to make calls and text and just enable the better radios when you need them for data. This would be the best for battery. Just put the toggles all on switches so you have quick access.
Yes, LTE really destroys the battery. If you are using the phone (i.e. the screen is on), and you are using LTE (e-mail/web/etc.), you won't get more than 2-3 hrs of screentime. Without LTE - or in standby mode (i.e. screen not on) - the phone lasts for a long time, unless you are experience battery drain issues, which some of the LTE users are reporting when signal is lost and regained again.

Hes right! Leave every radio enabled cause you never know when you may need to use them. Also turn brightness up to 100% because the screen looks awesome like that. Then all you have to do is have a giant battery hanging off the phone almost constantly. Perfect trade off if you ask me.
LTE is the biggest killer. With LTE on all the time, I get about 3 hours screen on time (which still blows all other phones that I've had out of the water). If I'm on wifi, I can get around 5 with the same type of use.

Yea, I saw it on the news page and decided to try it out. It definitely helps, but it still doesn't last as long as I want/need it to.

LTE might be the culprit. I get GREAT battery life on CleanROM, but I'm in an only-HSPA+ area.
Some other basic things you might want to try:
1. Confirm that you aren't in a poor reception area. Your standby times will drop dramatically if your reception is poor for an extended period. If you DO have poor reception, consider flashing a new radio.
2. Look for any wakelocks (times your phone is awake while your screen is off). A few every now and then are good, but if there are a lot, or they are lasting for a long time, it'll also kill your standby time.
3. If you notice unusual wakelocks, use something like BetteryBatteryStats to track down what processe(s) in particular are causing them.

Just disabled LTE. Let's see if my battery can improve now. I'm mostly on Wi-Fi when I'm home anyway.
Keep us posted Winters - I have heard some people have issues with this method - that the 3G connectivity drops a lot. I haven't seen this yet, but haven't tested too much...

I've been working on improving my battery. I've noticed a big improvement by using cpu-editor and super saver app. I've also noticed that battery lasts a lot longer on WiFi than it does on 4g Since 8:30 this morning (7 hours), I've used 33% mostly on WiFi and I think that's pretty good.
So, I was wondering... what can be done to improve battery life when on AT&T? I've tried the new radio, I'm not sire that's made a difference. Maybe it has, hard to tell.

If you're on LTE, you will inevitably use more power than just WiFi, that's just how it works.
If you can kick down to HSPA+ or UMTS you will see significant battery savings.

I'm in Albany, NY. I've been told we have one LTE tower here, but I've not experienced it yet. I should locate it and drive to it just so I can get a taste of how fast it is.
That said, I use HSPA+, unless I'm on WiFi.

HSPA+ uses more battery than WiFi when actively using it for data, the change just isn't as significant compared to when using the phone on LTE.
Some things you'll want to do to really get battery life savings is to eliminate partial wakelocks, and turn down screen brightness either by using a custom ROM or managing settings manually, as HTC's autobrightness is terrible out of the box and doesn't properly turn down brightness when you need it to, or turn it up when you need it to.
After that, if you don't need to have push email all the time then you can turn off always on mobile data, or manually turn off mobile data when you aren't using it.
Our Russian LTE testers of HTC One XL reports about 1.5-2 hours of LTE tethering. Make your conclusions.

Can someone explain to me how to go from LTE to HSPA+ to EDGE? I've tried looking in the settings but all I can find is a "Mobile network" on/off toggle. There is no option to turn on/off LTE, or HSPA+ or EDGE. It's a bit frustrating. Then in my status bar, the 4G icon is always displayed even when "Mobile network" is off. No data but it still shows up. Is this how it is supposed to be?
BTW, I'm using the stock ROM with Apex Launcher. I do not want to root or use a custom ROM.
Will the phone have a longer battery life if the cell modem is set to 3g vs lte?

Yes, in my experience with the S4 it's a pretty big difference UNLESS you get a very strong LTE signal. I'm on tmobile and now have the N5 and use the 3G setting which is HSPA/+ Plenty fast for me for what I do. When I want some extra speed I'll kick on the LTE

This phone is one of only two to have a LTE radio that is supposed to use 30% less power than usual so I'm wondering if that makes it as efficient if not more than 3G for idle in your pocket to light stuff like FlipBoard.
it would depend on the quality of the data connection. im in brooklyn nyc, and use lte on my nexus 5 exclusively, used to use it on my nexus 4 as well. with 3g(hspa+), on both my n5 and n4, i average about 4-4.5 hours screen on time. when using lte, i average about 5-6 hours screen on time on both my nexus 5 and 4. after noticing this difference, i use exclusively lte on both my devices, as i average an hour more screen on time when using exclusively lte.

Serious battery drain can have many reasons. One is having LTE on, syncing on(if you just booted it up, and input your Google account and let all your apps sync and download, its gonna drain your battery fast the first time), having locations on and wifi enabled. If you are in an area with poor reception, your phone will drain more trying to find connection.

Seems that's a whole other debate on weather leaving that on or turning it off helps battery life. Apparently if you turn it off then apps that want your location will turn the GPS on and waste battery (looking at you Facebook...), but if you leave it on the phone just tells the app your location from WiFi networks around you.
One thing I didn't think about is I had added my work WiFi yesterday but it wouldn't connect to it, wouldn't tell me why but I'm assuming it's because of bad signal as I'm a valet outside and the WiFi is from a bar across the street so I forgot about it but WiFi was left on with that network saved, my Nexus 7 can connect to it on most days and any laptop has no issues but with this being a phone I guess it doesn't have a big enough antenna. So I'm wondering if now that I deleted that WiFi network, and I always have my phone set to not notify me of public networks, if my battery won't die so fast today.
And now I'm just rambling but I just looked at my screenshot I took yesterday of battery use before plugging in at 4% and WiFi isn't even being shown on top six things that used the battery, lowest one being shown is a Chrome process using 3%.
EDIT: Well off to work now with my phone 100% charged, will have screen 100% (am outside in the sun), BT off, WiFi on (disconnected, no saved networks nearby, open network notifications off, always on during sleep, scanning always available, avoid poor connections, and WiFi optimization), LTE on/connected, NFC off. So lets see how things go. It will have tons of screen on time as all I do at work is read through FlipBoard, then if I run out of things on there I move to FB. Lets see how this goes...

Nexus 5 has it and its doing its job saving battery
Sorry for digging up such an old thread, but with LTE my Nexus 6P, it switches between HSPA and 3G. When turned to 3G, nothing changes. Would that mean I would save battery?
