wifi calling beatdown - T-Mobile LG G2x

I use this app called Where's my droid power and I don't know how acruate it is but it supposed to show you where all of your power is going. So I let my phone run over night. droidpower showed that Wifi calling app that I told no to was chewing up the most power. My phone is already rooted so I used root explorer to go in and delete the app all together. This app maybe the center of all the stand by battery issues.
I will warn you if you delete the app the way I did android goes crazy and you have to take the battery out and restart but we'll see if its worth if the cell standby or phone idle stats drop.

Weird, can't you just turn it off? I use it a lot and it doesn't seem to kill the battery any more than I would expect. Doesn't seem to take up a lot of CPU either.
Maybe your app that showed it was an issue was incorrect?

When I first logged into the phone it asked me and I told it no, the app seems pretty acruate the 2nd on the ist was words with friends . Just because its not taking up cpu doesn't mean its not running as a back ground service which is proabably doing

Interesting, I told it yes so maybe saying no causes it to still run and eat up resources?

I guess because I've restarted my phone probably twice since telling it no and it showed up #1 on my list for power consumption.

I had WIFI calling on the top of my list too this morning after only using it for 5 minutes last night. So I cleared the data and forced stopped it and ever since it has been at the bottom of my list using only .22%.

First day of use coming up. With the phone more-or-less idle for a couple of hours (one call, little bit of use), Settings->About Phone->Battery Use says:
33% Cell standby
33% wifi calling
25% phone idle
11% display
It's been off charge for about 2.5 hours, and dropped to 85% from 99%. Extrapolating would give 16 hours total life. ZDBox says 15.6 hours remaining. If that works out I'll be happy. As long as I get to bed-time each day that's enough.

I'm hoping once we get CM7 on our phones that fix everything
But for now freeze or delete things

Yes just use Titanium Backup to freeze the Wifi Calling App

Any suggestions about my battery life

I know that there are lots of these battery life threads and i have read most of them and I've tried closing processes that i don't need and i have tried setcpu to keep the cpu low when the device is off, which seemed to help some but my phone would shutoff randomly. So last night i had a full battery and went to bed when i woke up 8 hrs later i was at 20% so about 10% an hr not even using the device. I have attached some pics for reference does anyone have any thoughts that might help. Thanks
I don't know about galaxy S but on my X10 the problem was wifi.
When I didn't have a data plan I had wifi on all day and the battery was down in 10h max 12h.
To improve it I had to use JuiceDefender to enable wifi every five minutes for updates..
Try to disable wifi overnight, reboot the phone and see what happens.
By the way, what app you used for those stats?

I don't have wifi enabled, I don't use it that often. the name of the prog is system panel
Very weird indeed. I have my Captivate with Wifi on all day, GPS signal and auto sync and when I go to bed and wake up, the battery hasnt gone down at all. I had the phone go on full battery one day and I even sent a few texts and went online for 10 minutes before it lost just a bit of battery.
Do you have that one LED app installed? The one that shows a little red dot on the corner of your screen when you have a notification?

Ok so i tested again last night and I did not have my im+ app running and the battery life was soooo much better. I also did not have system panel running which records all the battery and cpu stats but i'm think its the im+ app that was taking up all the juice. Can anyone think of another app that does skype and facebook but that also does not take up sooo much batter life??? Thanks

Open up the dialer and type in *#*#4636#*#*
Go to BATTERY HISTORY>PARTIAL WAKE USAGE and maybe that will show you which app is sucking up your battery life while you sleep.
Also try, if you don't absolutely need an internet connection while you sleep, SMODA widget to turn off your mobile internet. It's quick, free, and painless.

I drained mine down to 5% and charged full a few times and still only got 8 - 10 hours on mine until i flashed to jh2 and now have been getting almost 16 hours with same usage and apps installed. I charge mine at night. I use ebuddy with the piwer saver option turbed on abd it does an ok job.

I have the stock ROM and stock launcher and my battery is awsome! 8 hours and I will still be above 80%.
Brightness: Lowest (manually control via stock stock gesture)
GPS: OFF
Wifi: ON all day
BT: OFF
GMail manual
Other emails accounts hourly for the most part.
Widgets: Google/Fancy Weather
BG: Mostly Black
I have never seen such good battery life on a smart phone.
I could easily get 2 days, but i rather charge every night and then not worry about battery usage.
The wifi/gmail/gps made a big difference, its too bad you can't set gmail to hourly or something lik e that. Some of my email accounts i would like to set longer than hourly.
The last few days have been pretty good one my phone. Used to get maybe 16 hours but my last charge lasted me about 50 hours with moderate browsing, gaming, and voice/text. Juiceplotter is telling me I'll be getting about 47 hours

My battery icon depletes one notch when I'm using the screen for about an hour. Some people recommend cycling the battery, in which you do a full drain and immediate full charge, 3 or 4 times. I've done it, but it's hard to say if it explains my good battery life.
let the battery drain COMPLETELY until the phone turns off a couple times, then charge it till 100% without unplugging it.

You don't want to drain the battery that much, those kind of batteries can be damaged. The phone turns off for a reason.
I haven't done the cycle thing and its fine. A lot of that comes from older batteries with the memory problem.
irus, software which is based on data connection drains the battery one way or another. Some apps now support push notifications and IM+ does too. Did you try to use push?
These claims of multiple day charges with moderate use is crazy to me. I have the newest ROM, a black screen, display all the way down, gps off, wifi on when in range, make zero voice calls, run juice, and only have 2 widgets that update every 4 hours. I use my phone for a maximum of 3 hours browsing the web, reading XDA and feedR, checking facebook and the occasional text message. My phone lasts a total of 12 to 14 hours. My battery has a manufacture date of late July. Is there some secret I am not aware of?

[Q] Battery loss 25% over night (8 hours), normal?

I disconnected my phone from power when it was at 100% before going to sleep. This morning 74% of power was left (after 8 hours).
"Cell standby" ate 40% and "phone idle" 35%. I'm in 5 bar coverage area. Is it normal?

i dont think so. i use almost no battery overnight unplugged with not so good coverage. im running stock atm.
I also use about 35% overnight. I started to systematically uninstall recent apps with no change so far. About 5% drain/hour. Weird stuff but also intolerable

Did you recently perform a flash (to a new ROM, a different one, or flashed back to stock JF6)? If you did, you'll need to condition the battery.
If not, you probably have some background apps that run all night.
EDIT: Ooops, nevermind.

I did not recently flash anything. I do have a bunch of background apps but if they were consumers they would show on a list, is not it. It would not be "phone idle" and "cell standby".
I'm in a similar boat. Ill drop around 20% within two hours. Display time is less than 30 minutes. Display down low. email fetching off. Running cognition 2.3 Tom
I've got a new battery on the way from att warranty.
Is it worth trying cpuset and tweaking?
Hope your battery life improves. I hate the mid day charge
Any chance you have wifi on? When I was running stock I would only lose a few percent overnight with it off. With it on though I would lose 20%+ easily.
Wifi uses battery more than 3G? In any event, without hijacking the OP's thread-I turned off wifi and it still uses about 5%/hour sitting idle with the screen off and locked.
However, what I did this morning: When arriving at my office-all I did was turn off something called "animation" in the display settings. I have no idea what you miss with animations turned off, but in about 3 hours of sitting idle, wifi on, I've only lost 2%. Not sure if I'm onto the problem..but will let it go another couple hours to check..then I'll turn the animations on again to see if that does anything.

I actually enable WiFi during sleep instead of 3G since according to posts here WiFi is using less power then 3G.
Thats what I thought..so turning off wifi is obviously not going to help battery life if you have a 3G signal. I don't know..I'm just killing one app at time but its tedious. May just do a factory reset-ticks me off to see the battery drain on a device that's already hard on the dam battery to begin with
I have started using cpu tuner to underclock my cpu when im not using it. Doing wonders so far. I am at 40% and have been using my phone normally for 10 hours 36 minutes

Woo first post--
Turning all data connections off will vastly boost your battery life. Not just WiFi but also 3G. On the stock Captivate you can do it by dialing *#*#4636#*#* > Phone Information > (Hit Menu button) > More > Disable Data Connection. Also check for SYNCing, stuff like Facebook, Twitter and Google syncing takes up a lot of juice since it repeats so often. I turn mine off unless I know I need real-time updates on a given day. On top of that, just keeping background apps from drawing CPU (i.e. having task manager to kill the ones that you KNOW keep running even though they're in the background) will help. I got ~24-36hr out of a charge through these three practices.
The next step for me personally was rooting the phone and taking out all the AT&T bloatware. This stuff loves to run in the background for whatever reason and killing it every hour is not going to help your battery life. So I removed all of it and reached almost 48hr out of a charge (low usage).
Turning off animations just takes away the smooth transitions between screens. I believe the home screen launcher (TouchWiz for stock Captivate) is actually unaffected, you still get smooth scrolling between screens. I'm using Launcher Pro and unticking the animations box in the Android settings only took out the menu animations, my homescreens are still smooth and fluid. Just that hitting the menu button makes the menu display immediately, instead of softly/smoothly, and returning to home is also instantaneous. I don't miss the animations, I like my faster AND more efficient.
If you've got the guts to play with your phone and really void your warranty, flashing to Froyo (2.2) and then optimizing everything you can about its power consumption will up the battery life even more. Today I used the GPS for a road trip, listened to music, spent 2hr browsing the Internet, made several phone calls, used the phone as a flashlight for an hour (pure white on screen) and after 24hr off the plug I'm at 50% battery. This phone + Froyo really is no joke, I've spent a couple days' worth of hours tuning so far, but once it's set up it's really satisfying. I can easily wring out 3 days from this phone if I don't go crazy with it.
Edit: If I let the phone sit still for 8 hours I lose about 1-2%. Not bad at all.
Reading around it seems that wifi signal and cell signal quality also majorly affect battery life. So if you're in a good location, you could potentially get much more out of your phone than if you're in a place with bad signal.
My battery life improved dramatically going to
settings ====> wireless and network ====> wi-fi settings ====> options ====> advanced
and changing wi-fi sleep policy to never. My default setting (Rogers) was when screen turns off. Made a big difference. Don't know if the default is the same on AT&T.

What do you mean? You battery life improved actually after enabling WiFi to be always on?
I think it's pretty funny how half of the forum swears they get better battery life with wifi on and the other half with it off.
I personally have never gotten better battery life with wifi on. I've ran stock, JH7, 3 versions of cognition, and now on Perception build 4 and this has never been the case for me. I've tried it out with access to different routers with varying amounts of signal and it still showed no signs of improvement.

Poor battery life after 2.3.3 update

I used to get at least 15 hours of battery life with my Nexus S under heavy use of 3g and music playback and plug it on the charger only when going to bed with at least 15% of battery left. Now I have to charge it twice on a single day. My use didn't change since I bought it and looking at the battery report there's nothing wrong with any app consumption. Right now it's been two hours since I unplugged it and i'm down to 70% already. You guys have any advice? Battery calibration? Full wipe?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Nexus one users on 2.3.3 have some weird battery drain issues. I was skeptical so I loaded it up, did my battery tests. The first few hours of idle use showed 4mA of current draw. Then without touching the phone, current went up to 180mA and stayed there for hours. I lost 50% battery. Seems some bug stops the phone from sleeping correctly. Maybe that's your issue. I didn't believe it till I saw it for myself.
Uh?!
I have read about people commenting about better battery life on 2.3.3 update
So which is which ? confused
Same here...the first month with 2.3.3 the battery life was better than 2.3.2 but the last weeks it drains like hell...even in airplane mode without using it...i loose around 15-20% during the night.....
I've had this happened to me a few times since CM7 RC2. Last time I experienced it was using RC4. Whenever it happens, I see gpsd quite high up in the battery usage breakdown. If I look into the history, for an hour or so, the current went up as high as ~50mA.
This doesn't happen a lot, and I've been trying to find out what triggered it. So far my first suspect is Google Maps, because it never exits cleanly. I have to force stop it every time, or else it keeps on consuming battery every now and then. Note that I was not signed into Latitude, so that is not to be blamed.
For a month or so, I've went as far as freezing Google Maps using Titanium Backup Pro, and it seemed to help. But I do know some people went even further to move the gpsd binary out of the bin folder.
If you have unusual battery drain again, check whether Google Maps/gpsd used up the battery.
@si_NZ. Can you provide more information on the moving gpsd from bin folder.
I've been doing some research about this. The maps app was showing up as a large user of battery on my NS, so I used Bloat Freezer (from the Market) to freeze the maps application so that it would not run, but running "adb logcat" I could see that something was still calling for it to open, and failing, every minute.

I had already selected that Latitude should not auto update my location but it wasn't until I opened Latitude and selected to sign out of the service altogether that the system stopped calling the maps app. I then unfroze Maps it and it hasn't been called since and doesn't appear in the running services list, unless I specifically open it.
I've gone from using around 20% of battery overnight to around 8%
hope this helps someone..

Not every phone is the same.
I've been on RC4 and haven't had horrible life. It could easily be on standby for 2 days with some background syncing, phone calls, and text messages. The phone does last me about 5-6 hours when I keep using it like browsing, games, and etc. Mind you, the screen is also on while I do this (auto brightness). If I just did heavy calling it'll last me throughout the day.

You can only do this if you are rooted. Simply move gpsd from /system/vendor/bin/gpsd out, say /system/vendor/
Keep in mind that doing so you will lose all GPS functionality until you reverse the change.
Thanks, going to test it out on my phones to see if there is a change in battery life. I generally get about 18 hours of hard use and 24 moderate.

what i did to get 4% battery loss an hour

*edit: i posted this because i'm actually happy with my battery life*
1) install setcpu and have profiles-- screen off 216/216, overheat 216/600, and a sliding scale based on how much battery is left
2) uninstall battery monitor widget, and instead use anycut to put a shortcut to battery info on my home screen.-- i realized that i was running down by battery by constantly turning on my screen to look at this beautiful widget. therefore, i found an even less battery consuming option AND i limit myself to checking battery percentage once an hour
3) turn down screen brightness completely in the evening and in well lit areas-- aka work.
4) use titanium to freeze bloatware. it was brought up how this bloat showed up in running apps still and i used bloat freezer to freeze them again. HOWEVER, bloat freezer for some reason, made my battery life worsen, so i uninstalled and went back to titanium. however, now, these apps do not show up in running apps, but i have "lost" my account. i.e. can't find it to unfreeze if i wanted to.
5) used battery calibration and ran the phone down until it died, and then charged up completely while off, two nights in a row...
6) changed the secret menu to "auto"
7) removed the music player widget from my homescreen, replacing it instead with a shortcut to my all music playlist
things i did not budge on
there were things that i could've cut down, but would have, in my opinion, dumbed down the phone.
1) autosync both email addresses
2) beejive im is running at all times with push notifications, alert on the first message
3) words with friends also has push notifications enabled
4) i use shopkick constantly
5) "4G" service- its what im paying for, and i enjoy the extra speed, so i never turn it off.

First of all, only calibrate your battery once. The phone needs to take those reading for the battery to drain evenly. It can take awhile for it to read the entire battery. So just charge to 100 percent, clear battery stats and leave it for awhile. Secondly, 4 percent in an hour isn't all that bad. it should be more like 1 or 2 percent but 4 isn't terrible.
What is the secret menu?
I'm losing around 10% per hour.... moderate use.. I calibrated the battery once, and I don't really have any apps in the background. I also froze apps using BloatFreezer. I have no idea what to do at this point.
going to try this tomorrow morning, the phone prior to this replacement was dying in 5 hours with no use and data turned off while I was at work, that is terrible I would be happy if I get 10 hours, haha.
I recently bought the g2x and I must say I'm very disappointed in the battery life. How do you check what the battery % loss per hour?

Thought that maybe there is an app for that....
If there is, not sure what it is haha, but I rather just not download an app for that and just use math But really, the battery life on my phone is horrible, part of me wants to return it under buyer's remorse and part of me wants to wait for gingerbread to see if it works? Not sure what to do. I don't want to end up sticking with a crappy battery life phone.
So how do we access the "secret menu", and what do we change to auto?
for your 4% drop per hour, what was your phone usage? did you pretty much leave the phone idle or maybe 20 min of usage? that makes a big difference

I'm also getting around 4% per hour. Decent usage too (little over an hour of phone time with bluetooth, couple hours of web browsing over the day, alternating between wifi and cell radio). I got this through a battery calibration only.

This is an average of 4% drop over an 8-9 hour period. Over that time, I probably talked on the phone for about a half an hour, had iming running, so iw ould answer ims intermittently- probably 20 mins of iming, scanned a few things and checked in using shopkick, browsed for an hour cumulatively, read emails as they came in, and read and answered maybe 20 texts?
i would say that is medium/light usage. since i am in and out of meetings, i would only get a 1-2% drop some hours, and since i was talking on the phone, a bigger drop then...

First of all, only calibrate your battery once. The phone needs to take those reading for the battery to drain evenly. It can take awhile for it to read the entire battery. So just charge to 100 percent, clear battery stats and leave it for awhile. Secondly, 4 percent in an hour isn't all that bad. it should be more like 1 or 2 percent but 4 isn't terrible.

sorry, i reworded my post to first say that i did not run battery calibrate twice.. also, i too agree that 4% an hour isnt bad. what are you doing to get 1-2% an hour?
What is the difference between the standard setting and auto in the secret menu?
There is it's called Juiceplotter.

1. i dont believe in those "power saving" apps because sometimes they use just as much battery as it saves.
2. what the point of having a smartphone, or even a cell phone, if youre always on airplane mode?
3. i posted this because i am actually happy with my battery life.
I need stats from a poweruser. People keep reporting 20+ hrs but realistically u let ur phone sit for the whole d day and text once or twice. I use my phone all day. Thats what I bought it for.

Losing battery life while phone is idle

Hello everybody, I notice lately my phone is losing about 10 percent battery life every 2 hours while it is idle. The funny thing is I have data off no text message and made one phone call. I don’t know what’s going on. I am running stock.
The Newest apps I downloaded were comicbook reader, Spotify and Netflix, but that shouldn’t matter right? Because my mobile data is off
that sounds about average to me. since its stock, i would just put Juice Defender on it and leave it set to "balanced", then see where youre at battery wise.
additionally, you could try Watchdog to see if theres any background apps that are consuming a ton of cpu(it can happen)

do you ever charge your phone in your car?
i know when you charge it via a wall charger or your PC, there's overcharge protection so realistically you can leave it "plugged in" as long as you'd like.
apparently though, if it gets fully charged and you still leave it plugged in in your car it can eventually do some damage to the battery and eventually kill it.
i had that happen to my old Galaxy S 4G & when i went to get a new battery they confirmed that that was the culprit.
You need to go into settings/ power/ and uncheck fast reboot . It runs all the time and eats up battery.

phone idle isnt as important as the time it says it's without a signal. if you arent getting a signal, it's looking for one and really really draining the battery

Yep TWS is the biggest culprit of battery drainage on these Android phones. If you're in a poor reception area, you're SOL because the phone will eat through the battery searching for a signal. I have an Epic and have similar battery drain issues due to this.

hmmm you might be on to something. Don't get good reception at home and my reception is ok at work, not perfect tho.

First, you should seriously consider rooting, then flash a custom rom & kernel. The stock rom is no battery sipper, and custom roms & kernels are much more efficient. I was getting ridiculous overnight drain (>20%) on stock, but now I'm getting only 1% per hour (6-8%). Also, grab Autostarts from the market. It prevents unnecessary apps from launching in the background & wasting battery (& memory)

It'll show in the about stats when you press on the phone usage stats how long it was without a signal if you want to look (in case you weren't aware). Also I would make sure your phone is set to use wifi when sleeping always and not mobile (under wifi settings → press menu → go to advanced).

My mobile data off when I'm at work. So pulled my phone off at 6 am, made one call, checked my email and now I'm down to 93 percent. This is just ridiculous seems like my battery getting worst by the day.
I'm at home now on WiFi...my mobile data is usually off all day at work. Watch dog only alerted me to dolphin browser and I always close that out when I'm finished. I don't know what's going on.
Why do I need to baby sit my phone to get good battery life?

This is not correct. The battery charge is controlled by the phone itself. the battery also has some electronics in it to limit the charge. The car charger provides 5 volts just like any USB port. You can (and I have) leave phone plugged into a car charger with no issues.
It is true that you should avoid charging the phone when it is HOT. So leaving it in a HOT car or any place HOT is a bad idea.
Checked the settings and my phone is using 3% battery life while it is idle. So I shouldn't be losing so much power. Is my battery damaged?
Yep, backing this guy up. The battery has it built in where it'll cut off the charge after it's full- and android has it that after it reaches 100% it'll let it drain down to ~90% because keeping it at 100% for extended periods of time is bad for the battery health.

If you're losing battery life when you're idle you have a few main reasons.
- First check to make sure you have a low min. set for your CPU, you don't want to have your CPU rev'd all the way up all the time- it's just not good.
- Download "spare parts" and check under "battery history" and you'll be able to see if you have a lot of GPS usage, data usage, CPU usage, etc.
- I'm not sure if mobile data turns both 4G and 3G off. I know the 4G here totally demolishes the battery, even more if you don't have it in your area.
If you don't have 4G and would like to save your battery from a painful death, do this (easy to change back)
*#*#4636#*#* -- Go to "Phone Settings" >> change to "CDMA auto (PRL)"
This will turn off 4G and stop it from searching, while still allowing you to use 3G and not have to turn off all data.
Hope at least one of those points helped you out and hope you get some better life because that's pretty bad, shouldn't be normal.

Losing 5%/hour is normal for my phone when it's sitting doing nothing. The battery is a joke. I have Juice Defender Ultimate and that brings it down to maybe 2-3%/hour.
