[Q] Changing default ROM Icons in WP7 - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys
Editing or “replacing” Windows Phone 7 downloaded app. Icons is fairly straight forward…a BIG thanks to Julien Schapman for making WP Device Manager public so that we can use the file explorer function on the desktop.
Can anyone help or explain to me how to edit a default rom icon? Something like “Internet Explorer” or “Messaging”. It must be possible somehow. In the TouchXperience group on Facebook, someone posted a picture of “the hack of the day” where this was done. See attached picture.
Please Guys. If anyone can help it will be greatly appreciated.

+1 on this!! I believe xbmod achieved in doing so on his wp7 rom for the hd2. Will love to see it on my HD7 as well

Advanced Config Tool by Julien Schapman is going to be released very soon.
It will also feature editing of system tiles
Looking also forward to that feature

Didnt want to create a new thread so bumping this old one.
Is there a hack to change the default icons in WP7 like for Phone/Messaging etc?

Change WM Wallpaper properly

As everyone knows that WM even 6.1 stupidly tries to make adjustments to a custom wallpaper (Today -> use this picture as the background).
Is there a way to prevent WM from doing that?
If it's not possible, is there something out there that can take a pre-made theme and somehow change the background image and reload that theme again? I know you can create themes and all but I have a lot of wallpapers so I would like that to be done automatically, not manually one by one.
Is it possible? Thanks in advance.

if i got you right, you have problem with transparency...run default WM picture viewer,if you can't find it in start>programs look in windows folder for an app called "pimg", run it, find picture you want...hold stylus on the picture until menu appears or press right softkey select "set as today background..." after that set transparency to 0% and hit ok....you have a opaque wallpaper
THANKS!!!
Is there a registry value for the background? I'm thinking of making an automatic process with Mortscript.

I Deffinately don't want to discourage the development of you own app but if you don't want to spend a lot of time on this I believe it has already been done. If it is not to your liking, full steem ahead!!
Thanks for letting me know but would you please tell me if it has already been done then what is the name of "it"? Where can I find "it"? Did some search but to no avail.
@testdasi: "It" is ShantzTodayChanger, a small app written by me. Take a look at the link in my signatures.
Very nice app,
I'm interesting too, but to make a mortscript to do the same like this.
I want to change the wallpaper, using a registry key which contain weather and show the background according to the weather.
Could you explain which registry key and how to refresh the today screen please ?
Thanks in advance
Edit : only thing I've found in registry is that :
Code:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Today]
"Wall"="32"
"DPI"=dword:00000060
"UseStartImage"=dword:00000001
But I don't see how to give the full path, I mean 32 is for my 32.jpf file which is located in special path.
I don't see the 0% transparency and how to refresh screen.
Thanks
@ toniolol:
I guess to change the background for the today you have to overwrite some files in \windows, the stwater_320_240 and the stwater_240_320 (maybe in your device the files have other numbers, because these are related to your device's screen resolution ).
For more info on that take a look a this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=966239&postcount=4).
About the reloading/refreshing of the today screen, I don't know how.
Cheers.
thread will be moved to Q&A section
I have released the source code for my app here: http://tech.shantanugoel.com/projects/windows-mobile/shantztodaychanger
You can take a look at it. It will answer all your questions.

How much of the 6.5 start menu can be customized?

I know the background of the start menu can be changed by:
1) changing the phones wallpaper like normal
OR
2) replacing the startmenu_background_screen_"resolution".png from within the windows folder.
The second is only if you want a different wallpaper in your start menu to the rest of your phone. (the default file is just a transparent .png which shows your normal wallpaper underneath)
I know you can also change the folder icons, by changing around other png files in the window folder.
My question is how can you change the font style or more importantly the colour?
Also, is it possible to change it so it resembles the wm6.1 start menu instead of the honeycomb?
(please dont say "just use a 6.1 ROM" because i dont want to. lol. I like wm6.5 as its quicker and more finger friendly, i just want the old start menu back)
no one know how to do these things?
anyone?
PLEASE?
im desperate here
lolz
As much or as little as you wish.
Have a look at some of the stuff I posted in here :-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=504320
Should answer a few of the basics.
Thanks for your reply, but those replies are about the today screen. I dont even use titanium any more. I find M2D more useful.
What i want to know is how to edit the Start menu.
the list of programs shown as hexagon icons
I want to change it to like how it was on wm6.1.
Just a grid of icons with words on a white background
OK, I have got what you are after... sounds like a registry hack somewhere....
Unfortunately the holiday(UK)/vacation(US), season is upon us, and I may not have found the solution for a week or two. If and when I do, I'll post it here and send you a PM.
Thank you.
Its appreciated

I second this question. And what I want is better not the 'grid view'.
Better we have a registry tweak way, so that we can make a HoneyComb Toggle.
In some cases when I want more RAM, it's better to shutdown the honeycomb and the titanium today plugin.
So another question is do we have a tool to toggle the titanium? Like we can do to M2D? I know we can do it through today settings, but I'm looking for a way like regitweak or mortscript, so that I can use a shortcut to map it to a hardware button, do it within one touch.
[Edit: Got some sence for the half of first question from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=509160&highlight=start+menu
Seems the WM6.5 honeycomb start menu is an executable called shell32.exe. If so we can shut it down with a powerful task manager like DotFred's TaskMgr.exe or let it show up in the htc task manager by registry tweak and kill it. Will report it back after I test it next week. Or anybody can test it right now?
But the first question still need an answer.
Edit3: So what is the process or service of the WM6.1 start menu ? (for that I think it's not an exe) This may help to answer the question of how to resemble old start menu back.
And then what is titanium? An exe, a process or a service? Got a name?]
Thanks for any help.
there isnt!
there isnt a way to back to 6.1 start menu...
but you can use the Qucik menu that is a lil same... but you need to leave blank the cpr file for grid scene on your windows folder... then use the Quick menu that Utaker post on devs and hack forum just search with this exact words " Quickmenu instead honeycomb" you may get all the answer you need there... Oh and the honey comb can be modded in maaaany ways just search all over the devs a nd hack sections
thanks bye.

Custom Contact & Bookmark Icons

I'm using dZenkinZ icon set and whilst I'm happy to use a graphics program to fiddle with an existing icon to make a new one for apps not covered by the existing set (eg Railway Live Departure Boards) I'm wondering if I can apply custom icons to Bookmarks and Contacts on my Home screen.
I've searched the forums, but couldn't see any clues...
Thanks
Anyone? Even just saying "no, it can't be done" would be a help!
bump on this as id like to know also.
E.G - i want to use the custom facebook icon from Dinik's set on my own bookmark of touch.facebook.com instead of just a screenshot of the link. (or any link i have)
I don't know for sure, but I thought it could only be done by cooking it into the rom.
If you want to know for sure wait for a dev or cooker to answer this, or post the question into the rom thread of the one you're using.
yes you can,
in registry HKLM\software\htc\manila\home\shortcut number\iconpath:whatever
delete folder 'proglauncher' from \application data\htc
restart manila

[APP REQUEST] A Manila style NOTES app WM6.5

Hi Guys,
I often use default wm Notes program in my htc.
Recently i thought about creating a simple and pretty program with htc manila style, instead of boring wm notes.
Personally, I can't create such a program, because I don't know the programming language
However, I made several assumptions that I should comply..
*very simple -just basic funkcions: add, view, edit and delete notes
*Fast loading during startup (in my opinion the most important)
see attachment
So if someone can create that app or something like that it will be great
P.S.
I made some graphics which can be useful and
if anyone would be interested in the "project" I can send psd file
write any ideas and attentions ..whatever you want

[SOLVED] Aero Theme for Windows Phone Mango - How to?

Hi,
Back in the time, when i was using Yuki's ROM for HD2 there was two themess called 'aero black' and 'aero rich'.
Does anyone know if, i can get then on Mango 7720.68?
As i think it is only about adding a new folder and the key and values in the registry.
Maybe with a CAB installer, or adding amnually, but current regeditor can not add things, it is only capable to deleting entries.
Thanks
SOLVED!
Hi Folks,
I tried an "old" nodo registry hack and changed the "ChromeColor" value to #00000000 in the dark theme, so full transparent and it works. Some menus and calling buttons background became transparent. Nice.
changing "Pagebackground" value doesn't work do not do it. I think it is because the same reason why transparent background also doesn't work on mango.
So it is not compleme yet, but i will keep discovering this part of registry. I hope someone else also likes this.
