SD Transfer speeds - T-Mobile LG G2x

So just another thing to mention and this one is really good for me at least. Coming from an N1 with a class2 16gb sd card i was getting transfer speeds over usb of under 2mb/s... well that same card is pulling 5.25mb/s... these are write speeds!
i wonder what a class 10 gets
what about anyone else? I am curious if this is an isolated case because i dreaded transferring files onto my N1 since it took forever...

I definitely got a faster transfer rate too! It used to take about 20 minutes on my nexus to transfer my small amount of amount of music, it took around 8 minutes or less on the G2x. I love it more than when I first got my G1. It even looks more like a successor to the G1 than the G2 does, imo awesome awesome awesome. It's going to be ridiculously awesome with cm7 and a blazing kernel, and I can only imagine ice cream. woot woot!

ok im transfering a movie... one big file as opposed to all of my little music files and i am getting between around 7.35mb/s... this is spectacular!

cool
nice to hear i ordered a class 4 32gig but it hasnt come yet. maybe i should of just used the 16gig class2 out of the droid.

SD transfer rates
I too have noticed a big speed improvement when transfering files. Faster than any phone I've ever had. Way to go LG!

Class 10 microsd card brand for mobile phones.

I would like to know if is worth it and is fully compatible with nowadays phones a microsd class 10 card.
ii saw this auction on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/KINGSTON-16GB-M...emory_Cards&hash=item2eadb5a234#ht_3341wt_911
And i'm interested if it'll speed up phone usage.
I've got an HTC Magic. May i have you opinion ? Thanks
To be honest, for regular use I don't notice the difference between class 2 and class 6, so I doubt you'd notice the difference with this. The only time you really would notice a difference would be when you're moving large files to and from the card.

...or regularly playing music or vids from the card (larger libraries can take longer to load/access). It can also be noticible when pics with the camera are saved to the card. However, you pass a point of diminishing returns if you go any higher than a class-6, and probably won't see enough difference to justify the price difference of a class-10.
hmmm. For me is not much expensive the price . i'm needing a new sd card. i've got a class6 but my dad needs a sd card, i was tihnking on buying something better.
i would like to know if do you think that the magic is capable of handling the speed.

16GB MicroSD Card... $18

Just a heads up for anyone wanting one. I got one of these...

I bought mine weeks ago but I guess they've still got the promo going.
The $25 rebate is valid and works.
Good find, but that is for a "Class 2" card..... so it would be a little slow.

Class 2 from what I've seen is good for everything other than camcorders, for example. I don't have problems using it in mine at all.

Just for the sheer fact that loading music and movies would be slower would make me avoid Class 2 personally. It'll work, sure, but I don't want my file system to be a slowdown on my phone. 720p video recording on the Captivate only seems to be about 1-1.5 MBps (rough estimate, I could check a video on my phone, but it's not plugged in), but that's still cutting it a bit close for a Class 2. If you're not a "power user", then a Class 2 is fine. Otherwise I'd try to go faster.

32GB MicroSd Recomendations

I'm after a 32GB Micro SD for my phone but I'm unsure which is the best way to go. A part of me is thinking of getting a Class10 but I know that a Class10 sacrifices R/W rates for speed which is making me unsure. I only use my SD card for Music Playback & the odd Photo & Video I will take, I dont store Apps on the SD card (No point with the huge internal space in the G2!) Is it better to go for a lower class (Like Class4/6) or will the Class10 perform well enough?
And is there any 32GB MicroSD's you can recommend (or warn me off!) I keep looking at this one:
Lexar 32GB Micro SDHC High Speed Card with Reader - Class 10 Extreme Speed
But the one review kinda puts me off.
What do you guys/girls think i should go for?
Thanks in advance

If you don't mind me asking, what Read/Write speeds do you get with it?
I've been doing more research today on this & getting more & more confused 0_o I don't understand why some places say Class10 is always the best & some say that it sacrafises so much to make it that fast that its better for a lower Class. I always thought that the best you could get was Class10.
My head hurts :-(

haha mine too. i get so confused about that. i'm looking forward to seeing a definitive answer on this thread.
from what i understood with class is how fast it r/w higher the class better the r/w
but i could be wrong on this too
from what i gather if your device can handle and utilize the higher class then it will be good but if it cant then a lower class would be better
example
so if the phone can handle DTR class 10 then you will see it able to write at full 10mbs but if it cant you will see that it sluggish and sorts of issue and as well see that a lower class card (class8) would out preform the class 10, this is cause the phone can fully take advantage of the class 8 speeds of DTR
thats what i gather and understood, once again though im not fully sure if this how it truly works
There is a little misunderstanding about SD card speeds. The card class only tells you the sustained write speeds. This was important information for people with cameras (still and video) and why the class was invented. What class does not tell you is read speeds and random access speeds. These are the factors that effect performance in the way we normally use a microsd card in our phones but are not ever advertised. I've found regardless of class Sandisk cards normally score pretty high on the last two values so I almost exclusively stick with them. I'm using a class 2 Sandisk 16gb which measured 3.7mb/s write speed just below class 4 and 18mb/s read. Toshiba has been really good too. On the other hand I had a class 6 PNY that was barely usable in a phone because it's access speeds were so slow it caused noticeable lag in the phone.
Get the one in my signature.
I ended up getting a 32 GB Patriot Class 10 when I was at Fry's Electronics a couple weeks ago. It performs as advertised
Patriot 32gb Class 10 cards go belly up and corrupt your
Data when it hits 16gb of storage . Its a well known issue
With Android phones using this card . Patriot even acknowledged it . For now i would stay far away from them .

True, they issued a statement about that card and android/wm7 phones.
They also said there is a workaround that "usually" works. format the card fat32 with 32k clusters.
I decided to try it, and so far for like the last 10 days my card has been alright. I loaded it music and did a bunch of nandroids, because nandroids were usually the first to become corrupt.
I've had my Wintec card for just over a day and I have no complaints whatsoever with it. I'll let you know when I use more than 20GB of data on the card.

Yikes -- well I just copied all my crap to the new card, and so far so good.
But I better copy it back, reformat as you say, then reload the data.
(for almost $100 this card better be reliable -- it IS fast, thats for sure)
I see now that Patriot is saying this is "Industry Wide" that could affect other 32GB class 10 cards, not just theirs.
I saw no need for a Class10 card. I got the SanDisk Class4 from BH Photo and it is performing admirably.
As long as its above Class 2... you should be fine unless you use A2SD (might wann go with a class 6 or higher) which isn't really needed on a Desire Z/G2. Avoid the cheapo cards because they corupt more easily. I always back up my card every couple of months or so just because of past experience with cheap sd cards but last couple of years I rarely have that problem with Sandisk cards. They corrupt after a year or so but regular check disk utilities (every 4 months or so) and occasional defrag (one a year or so depending on your usage) can prevent coruption or problems.
Higher Class doesn't always mean better. Not going to explain but google can help. As far as my read write speeds I've never had the need to find out because its fast. I'm critical on stuff so if I felt a problem growing I would check.

I'm well aware that there's no "regulatory committee" checking up on the classes of each individual SD card mass-produced and sent to retailers. My Centon 16GB Class 6 card worked better than it was supposed to (except for one time when the data on both partitions got corrupted), and the Wintec card I'm running right now does write at 10MB/s. If you're looking for a cheap Class 4 card that performs like a Class 6, go with PNY.

This is what ive been finding basicly all over the internet, conflicting advice & recomendations. Its kinda why i started this topic to try & get some clarity but i guess that isnt the case.
Then again i wouldnt call the Thread "not useful" I have found a load of information out about card & manifactures etc. unforantly nothing soild, Hopefuly with more people jumping in & contrabuting to this thred then we might get a answer as to which is the best 32GB MicroSD card to go for.
P.s: Sorry for any horrable spelling/grammer errors, typing this in a rush as I'm about to go out!

This is all about people's experience with their cards. Yes it conflicts and that is why it's being discussed here to try and find a common reason to why it does "x" and what class to buy and the real differences.
No need to be a jerk about it. If you can't contribute and prefer to bad mouth, then it's better off being kept to yourself than making worthless comments like yours

sorry, i just couldn't help myself this time. it's just one of the most overly conflicted threads i've seen in a long time. i was real disappointed cause i was hoping (like the op) to get an answer of some type. but we're all just worse off than when we started at this point unfortunately. if i hear of anything definitive elsewhere though i'll be sure to relay the info to this thread.

Will the 32 GB have faster storage?

I believe the Nexus 4 16 GB has faster storagvwhen compared to the 8 GB will we see that with the 32 GB Nexus 5?
And why do you believe that?

This can happen in SSDs. On the phone without knowing what type of controller tech is being used with the nand it's hard to say.
This is easily proved by benchmarks that show certain higher capacity SSDs earning higher speed benchmarks than the same models in smaller capacities.
Take a look here: http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/ssd-charts-2013/AS-SSD-4K-Q64-Random-Read,2786.html
See how the 840 Evo in 1gb beats the 840 pro 128 ? ( basically the evo is the step down from the pro line. But increase the capacity enough and it beats the Pro. )
But like I said I have no idea how the actual nand and what the controller setup is on the nexus 5.

Most probably because he ordered the 32gb Version
seriously I would think the other way...with sd cards it is known that the biggest cards are by far Not the fastest ones.
curently the fastest One are 32gb Versions.
taking that....I'd think that the bigger the space the slower it is.
but hell...WHO cares if they use anything like in my Xperia z tablet.
60mb/sec read and something like 35mb/sec write is twice as fast as in my samsung note1.
that really makes a difference.
by the way...I ordered a 32gb Version.

Actually I ordered a 16 GB Nexus 4 at the time and ordered a 16 GB Nexus 5 this time. So I was wondering.
in both case of traditional hdd and nand memory, bigger usually means faster, especially for nand memory.
More capacity usually comes with more channels, hence more simultaneous read/write operations.
I know it highly depends on the design/specification of the controller. But in NAND world, it's safe to say the statement holds in 99% of all cases.

im Not saying that he is wrong but fact is....the fastest 64gb card is just a mediocre 32gb card. But as he wrote it wont be related to less controllers/channels but the less good nand Chips i guess.
but since 32 gb cards are the fastest currently chances are good that speeds will be ok for the model I ordered

Sdcard are generally slower than internal flash memory, why do you think nexus devices do not come with sd slot, this is one of the reason. Do you honestly think they put an sdcard inside the Nexus phone?

well this has happened but it is very unusual especially with quality Made products.
but i think the storage is the Same built. just without the way via the sd card Format. the Chip is the Same i think.
it would be so easy if people with nexus5 would care to Test.
I dont really do that much. that is why I repeatedly say either the 16gb Version as the 32gb Version will be fast enough.
in fact how much was the difference between tbe 8gb and the 16gb Version on nexus4 btw?
but i'd the difference will be smaller this time since 16gb cards are pretty damn fast too.
probably the controller of the phone itself may cause a bottleneck where the Performance gets cuttedmso the may be even no difference at all when it comes to nexus5.

This is 99% not the case. The internal NAND chips have faster random read/write speed than the chips in sdcard most of the time. The controller in the sdcards are also slower than the build-in ones. In the case of GS4, the internal NAND is 6 time in random read speed and 3 times in random write speed of a class 10 sdcard placed in the sd slot.

in that case the sd card reader of the s4 is veeeeery Bad. cause the sd card in my Xperia z makes it above 40 mb/sec.
the internal storage though is still faster at something like 55mb/sek.
then there is the fact that you obvioulsy forgot that there are uhs-I cards that we can put in our sd card slots...I got One of those!
you shouldnt compare Ferrari with beetle to proove a point which only is true by Part.
finally there are sd Format cards available with speeds of 120mb/sec. but the sd controllers in our handheld devices are Not yet able to read them. So six times makes the internal Memory of the s4.....600mb/sec.
now thats fast. just because you dont Know something doesnt meant it isnt there!?
chinese tablets indeed have (the ones i Know) that Bad internal Memory that in fact a good sd card is faster than the internal Memory.
we dont Know what quality Google has told LG to build in. i just hope is somewhere like what is in Xperia z.

You are quoting continues read/write speed in the best case scenario. My test is small file random read/write which more like real day to day operation of a smartphoe. With a ush-i card inside, GS4 benchmarked at 13mb/sec and 7mb/sec. The same test performed on the internal is 71mb/sec and 40mb/sec.
ok. that is truely a different Situation there.
and YES the s4 really has powerful memory installed if those numbers are true.
now i wish LG has built in some of THAT stuff

SD Card will slow down your phone?

Ok one of the local "guru's" at Best Buy told my wife that putting a SD card in her S8 or S8+ will slow the phone down..... I know that a slow SD card would but she was buying a Samsung Evo + 128gb card? Please tell me he was just trying to upsell her on a SD card.
Ps. I've had terrible luck with Samsung SD cards. Everyone I've owned has failed in the first year. Often Sooner.
At this point I only trust SanDisk.
It's the reverse for SSD drives.

What I had said before was he's wrong.
Basic summary is the card itself is slower than Internal storage so what you Store there Will be slightly slower. But for video, audio, pics, it's totally fine.
It can help you avoid slowing down your phone because keeping your internal storage with space Helps avoid the slowdowns that come from fragmentation.
The fuller it is the more it has to hunt to read and write data.

A slow card will slow things down for sure. Especially the camera.
Using my 256GB card courtesy of Samsung when I got my Note 7 last summer.
That card works great. Used it in a Sony A6500 mirrorless and could record 4K on highest setting with no issues.
Using a USB 3.1/Thunderbolt hub on my Macbook I was getting close to 100 megabytes per second copying pictures.
Good deal for free. If anyone got one from the Note 7 deal I'd use it on the phone.
A bargain bin 32GB card that barely writes at 10MB/S is gonna give problems, no doubt about it.
Yeah I have the 256gb one coming in the extra package from Samsung if it ever arrives. My wife walked into Best Buy and bought hers today GRRRRRRR!!!! I told her to get the same card the Evo + as its the same speed or very close as the one coming (if samsung ever gets my order out of Indianapolis!)

But it isn't going to magically slow the whole phone down which was the best buy assertion.
It will slow down what is explicitly stored there. That's about it.

Samsung cards are the in my experience
No it won't slow it down all the time but any service or app that wants to use it for whatever reason *could* be impacted.
Since most users want the space for pictures/video and use the camera frequently this becomes an issue.
Of course leave it up to BB sales they'll resort to anything. (ex. $120 HDMI cable that will provide IDENTICAL picture and sound as a $8 monoprice special)
My S8+ was running like molasses, huge lag in apps and app switching. Instantly better when I removed the SD card.
I wouldn't merge it with the internal storage, I would expect that to cause issues.
I run the 128gb evo in mine and have absolutely no issues
Thanks for reminding me! My camera was saving photos to the SD card. I noticed some lag and meant to move it back. Forgot until now!
dunno if S8 has Move App2SD? If you have that and slow card then its going to be slow..
SD Cards are slow in general, even if its top tier in Class. And they fail too damn often so i stopped using them.
I just installed a scandisk sd card 200g in my s8+ and I see it's there but shows to not be mounted. Any suggestions on what app or what I can do to resolve this issue please
my phone was running slow especially when Google play updated apps. I unmounted the SD card and then the problem was solved. and I don't move any app to SD only photos are saved there but somehow it still impacted Google play a lot.
