This is driving me CRAZY...
I have a new Inspire phone for about 3 days now and I am coming from Windows Mobile (Tilt 2).
With the initial setup I was able to select a certain sound for email notification. This is NOT for GMail notification. It is for the email client in the ROM (stock).
Now I want to change that notification sound and I cannot find where to select a different sound. So I sheepishly put my pride aside and ask: where do I change the email notification sound?
Thanks!
Mail/menu/more/settings/notification settings.

That was the first place I went to. Not there though.
What I have at Mail/menu/more/settings/notification settings is:
Email notifications (checkbox)
Notification sound (checkbox)
Notification vibrate (checkbox)
Nothing where I can change the actual notification sound.

Hit the personalize button, then click notification sound, and you'll be able to change the email sound.

THANKS !!!
That did it. SPB Shell 3D did away with Personalize. Couldn't get to Personalize even from inside Settings. It just returned me to Home.
Thanks again.

Can you have different notifications for a new email and text message?
Do you mean different audio notifications? I use Ringo Lite so that I can have different audio tones for text messages from different people, as well as to let me know when I have e-mails vs text messages, etc. Works fairly well. Only major complaint that I haven't bothered to figure out yet is that if I get an e-mail or text during a phone call I still get the vibration and sound (which can scare the crap out of you! lol)
Hope this helps.

DUH! I see, I just noticed the one under HOME SETTINGS, I see that is for the default. Thanks.
I have read and searched, read and searched and read and searched. For some reason I can't change my notification ringtone for nothing. I can't even use a different stock one.
Someone please help!

Yeah, what this person said. There should be an option to change your notification sound there. You can also change, for example, your message sound by hitting the menu button when you are in the message app and then click on settings, notifications.
Something to help you that I posted in another forum.
Default Notification
Your DEFAULT notification can be found in settings > sound
or personalize soft button > notification sound > default notification
Message Notification
If you want to change the MESSAGE (sms/text) tone you would think that you could just change it from personalize soft button > notification sound > message, but unfortunately that does not work. Actually it will most likely do nothing. If you want to change your message notification then do it through the message app.
If you use HTC Messages as your messaging app: Open "Messages" then hit menu button then settings then notifications then notification sound and choose your message notification here.
If you use Handcent as your messaging app: Open "Handcent" then menu button then settings then notification settings. Here you can select a sent notification and a fail notification. But select notification settings one more time and here you can select your message notification sound.
I would think GoSMS is setup the same way. I don't have this app so I cannot give details.
Email Notifications
Your Default Mail app gets its notification sound changed by personalize soft key > notification sound > email. Make sure notification sound is turned on in the settings of the Mail app itself.
You Default Gmail app uses your default notification sound as far as I can tell and cannot be changed separately.
Alarm Notification
Alarms can be changed with personalize soft button > alarm or where you configure your alarm. A separate custom notification sound can be set here for individual alarms.
Calendar Notification
I don't use the calendar. As far as I can see, you can set up notification sounds through the personalize soft button or by going to the calendar app and changing the notification sound in its settings. Because I haven't tested this yet I cannot say if the personalize soft button way actually works. May be redundant just like the message notification sound and does nothing. So to be sure change it through the calendar app itself.
Ringtones
Ringtones can be set numerous ways. Through the personalize soft button or settings > sound > Phone Ringtone or By selecting the menu button from the home screen and selecting ringtones or by selecting your tone with the HTC Music app and selecting the menu button and then set as ringtone.
Contact Ringtones can be set when editing contacts.
Missed calls are visual notification only and Voicemail Notifications use your Default Notification sound.
Note: At what locations can your ringtones, notifications, and alarm sounds can be found?? If using an app to select most likely the tone can be anywhere. You will be allowed to navigate to your custom location. If using an HTC sense menu then you will have to have your custom tones saved in a special custom folder. On the root of the sdcard create these 3 folders if not already there. Ringtones, Alarms, Notifications. If you download the tones from HTC Hub first it will autocreate these folders for you so you don't have to create them yourself. You can now put your custom tones in each folder.

Hello,
I was trying to change the email notification sound on my HTC Desire S email client, but I'm not able to do that.
If I go to notification settings, I can see three entries:
e-mail notifications (ON)
notification sound (ON)
notification vibration (OFF)
But I don't see how to change the notification sound there.
If I go to System Settings and then to Audio settings, if I tap on notification sound, I see I am already using the notification I want, but this setting is not detected by the email client from HTC.
What's the setting to be modified then?
Have you looked in the sound tab of personalise? (are you running stock firmware)?
Thanks a lot! There is what I was looking for!
Is it possible to disable the vibrate notification when receiving e-mails (using the stock e-mail app)? I want the visual icon to show up in the notification bar with no sound, just NOT vibrate. I want to keep the vibrate notifications for MMS, calls, etc..just not e-mails. This seems like a simple request but I can't seem to figure it out.
If its anything like the Gmail app then open up settings, inside settings, click on your Address [email protected], Then its inside there...
( I don't use the email app, sorry.. just a thought )
Settings --> General --> Notifications --> Select corresponding account --> UNcheck "Vibration" (unchecked by default for me)

Thanks for your response. The "vibration" option is grey so I can't change it. It is off by default anyways, but it still vibrates.
This is driving me crazy. Any recommendations for a different email app?
Open email. Touch 3 dots in upper right hand corner. Touch settings. Open notifications. Select email account . Turn off vibration.

If you're like me and always keep your phone on vibrate, this is actually a far more annoying issue than you would imagine. (The same fix can be used for Google Hangouts.)
If vibrate is not currently enabled under notifications and your phone keeps vibrating at you, it's actually because of your notification sound. If you change the notification sound to "Silent", your phone will no longer vibrate.

Yes, I always keep my phone on vibrate. If I switch it to silent, wouldn't that disable the vibrate from sms and calls?
No, those will still vibrate. You don't want to switch the ring tone settings, just the notification sound for your email. Go into settings, notifications, and then for the notification sound select "Silent".
I have searched on the site and don't find this issue. Despite everything I have tried, I cannot change the from the soft, default Google Messages notification sound. I have even tried changing individual sounds on a person by person basis and that doesn't work. I have gone into sounds and notifications in settings, also tried by going into the Messages app. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Easy way just get Zedge and add new sound through that

I can change the system default with no problem but the default per contact is a fail, so I feel you. Same with other alerts, like my Google Cameras. Wil lNOT set a different alert sound than the system default

I can't even get the default to change. I have tried everything I can think of. Sounds and notifications, in the app itself, just can't figure it out and this is my 4th Pixel.
There are two locations for "setting" notification sounds for Google Messages as well as "default notification sound" UNDER "Sound and Vibration"!
Now if both of these are set to the same thing then everything will work OK. However, if the default location is set to one sound and the app setting is something else...then it's a toss up as to which will take precedence.
So here is my suggestion for two possible solutions.
Under settings>Sound and vibration>Default notification sound>My Sounds and select NONE. Now you can go to the messages app itself and tap on your avatar in the top right>Messages settings>Notifications>Other notifications>Sound and choose whatever sound you want. This will give you the sound you want for any messages you receive in the messages app. However, this will leave any other type of notifications such as a calendar reminder with NO sound (unless you assign one specifically to the calendar in the same relative manner as you just did with messages. I chose the calendar as an example because once you dig in and find the notification sound set for your calendar it is probably set to "Default notification sound" which you just set to NONE.
The second possible solution is to change the default notification sound to what you want and the messages app to the same sound. This will ALSO make all the other notification type sounds the same as in the previous calendar example.
Now you can always set the calendar to some thing different and it MIGHT work as you set it despite the default being set to something specific and it might not.
So of the two methods I have suggested the one that should work the best is to set the default notification sound to NONE and then go into each individual app that may give off a notification sound and give each one what you want. I hope this helps!
I am able to change my default sound to a different per app basis by going to profile picture and then clicking on message settings and select notifications then selecting behavior sound and more and from there select incoming messages then choose your sound for your messages. This is how google messages does it

Thank you for the detailed write up. I tried both solutions but still nothing. I even took this one step further and tried to sync the two with the ring sound so all three would be identical. However I can't do that because none of the tones in the ring match notifications or message sounds. I don't know what the glitch in my matrix is, but this is frustrating as heck. This isn't my first rodeo, and I refuse to believe I have some special P7P that prevents message notification modifications.

Can you share a screenshot of the "Behavior Sound" screen? I don't see that as an option on my P7P. Thank you for the response.
Here you go
Oh I forgot 1
I'm sorry I put it kinda step by step I just put it the way I would like to see it
Please let me know if I can be a further help to you
I also do not have a setting called "behavior sound"?
I wonder if it appears due to a particular setting or because of the model number of your P7P?
Here is a YouTube video telling you how

It is so weird, after playing with settings for days, yesterday I started hearing my phone doing the notification for when out Ring cameras detect movement. Since I don't always check the video right away, it took until this morning to understand now my message notifications have started using same ring tone. What is weird is I set that tone during the time of this conversation. Huh...
