Honestly? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm just curious here. How many of us were considering buying and Ipad 2, but decided on the Xoom when we started hearing about rediculous delays of availability in retail stores? I've never bought an Apple product in my life, and it makes me gag a little bit that I even considered it. To be honest though, the five week delay may be the only thing that kept me from violating my Apple virginity. Thank You Apple for terrible production strategy.
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk

I considered the ipad2 and the delay was an issue, utimately I wanted a tablet that felt like a computer. The more I tested the ipad2 the more I kept saying that this was just a big version of my ipod touch. I just never got around that issue. The xoom is rougher around the edges, but to me it feels and acts like a pc (in others its not just a bigger version of my epic 4g).

Not even 1 thought. After using the iPhone 3g while ago. It was seriously a waste of time. I wanted my tablet to be different from the rest of my devices. Fyi my nexus is running cm7 with a theme. My PC still running XP lol. My netbook is windows 7 device. My wife got an iPod touch but she barely uses it since I got her a g2. So honeycomb was competitive and the xoom is an awesome device to have. I am never going back to ios.

My friend and I both considered it. Hell I was a purchase button away. But no flash and having to jailbreak ios to be able to do what android does? After I got mine my friend found it perfect for school. He goes to Phoenix university and it loaded his posting boards perfect. He couldn't do that on ipad. Giant winner for us both. It may not have all the apps yet. But its still a pretty nice price of hardware. I have a rooted epic so that's nothing new. But I haven't rooted my xoom. Haven't found a need to. Surprised me to say the least. But then there are no custom roms, and I don't need to tether it. Lol

I've never had a mac product other than a ipod nano my wife got me, and i hated it. I had to BUY 3rd party programs just to rip MY MUSIC off of MY DEVICE?
No thanks.
I would NEVER EVER purchase a apple OS. I like being able to do WHAT I WANT.
With all the awesome Android hardware coming out there's really no reason to buy a ipad 2

Not i, my wife already has the ipad 1, and i hate it.

Never considered it, but admittedly seeing my father's ipad made me want a tablet device. I just knew it wasn't an ipad. I mean really, a screen full of icons? I recommend IOS devices for Senior Citizens and technoretards....

Wife wanted a new ipad2 (my 3 year old son pretty much took over the original one we had) so I ordered it on release day. Took about a couple weeks to get in but she wasn't in a hurry for it. On the other hand, I was impatiently waiting the wifi Xoom release and haven't been disappointed (with the Xoom) in the least bit.
The iPad 2 is alright, feels very delicate, like I'm holding a carton of eggs. I haven't picked it up though since I got my Xoom, nor do I plan on it...

moving from a blackberry storm to a droid2 last November, i knew i would eventually go with an android tablet. i got a Verizon branded Xoom when i heard 4G would be available here soon.

I have the iphone 4 and HATE it! I mean I have this thing jailbroken and tweaked out but it still does not compare to my old droid incredible. SOO when the Dinc2 comes out i am def on board providing it does not come with a locked bootloader! Anyone want to buy a perfectly good iphone 4 for verizon LOL! Android is def the way to go!

Honestly, I waited for the iPad2 launch then decided to buy my Xoom. Apple makes fantastic hardware, but I can't stand the OS. I understand the polish argument, but honestly my N1 and Xoom both run much smoother than my OG iPhone and 3G and comparing against my sister's iPad/iPhone4 they are just as fast, if not faster. Most of Android's bad rap comes from the ****ty ROMs that the hardware manufacturers build. Let's leave the coding to the software companies. Back to my point though, I don't enjoy the locked down environment of iOS. Yes, you can jailbreak, but you lose that with every update. I went from CM6.1 -> CM7 nightlies/RC -> CM7 final without any wipes. People will complain about bugginess in Android then tell you to jailbreak, really? Cydia is one of the slowest/buggiest things I've ever used. Plus the Google account integration on Android is the shiz. Just my $0.02...

And cydia just got worse now that apple removes its presence easier these days

Never a thought. Moved from Windows phones to Android phones and of course XOOM was next progression after the GTab for me. Consider me an Apple HATER!!!

I was waiting for awhile for the xoom to hit Canada for a lonngggg time. The ipad2 came out here 1 week before the xooms hit the shelves but I had no desire. I wanted a xoom so I can tweak it like my android phone.

I thought about it just for the cheaper price but then I said why do I want to be locked up ever since I got my xoom haven't looked back although people say " is that an I pad" I simply say no something better and story takes off
sent from my Motorola XOOM

It was my birthday and the wifi xoom had not been released yet. so I had ordered the iPad2 because I had the itch and a corporate discount. the day the wifi xoom came out, we drove to staples and my gf bought one for me. after a few hours with it, i proclaimed it to be mine.
I waited for the iPad to show up, 1 month after i ordered it. maybe I could re-sell it. But I did not want to bother, I didn't even open the box, and just returned it.

so confused whether or not to come back to the inspire :(

i went back to the IP4 last week from my inspire becasue of a rebooting issue. i miss the nice big screen of the inspire and i LOVE flashing and tinkering with ROMS..
have any of you came from the IP4 latley? regrets? did you or do you want to go BACK to the Ip4?
just looking for opinions and input
thanks
I have a solution for the problem. Get married, buy your wife an iPhone 4 and you can have an Inspire. It works for me. (You could also buy an iPad on ebay to itch your iOS scratch, there is a fire sale going on on those things right now.)
I have just passed my 30 day window to return the Inspire and I couldn't be any happier. This phone is great. I have never had a resetting problem but then again I have not rooted my phone yet, I am still waiting for the process and ROMS for this phone to mature a bit.
Any time I pick up my wife's iPhone I feel like it is a toy; it is just so small. It is a good phone if you want to push a button and have something work, if you are a tinkerer you should have stuck with Android.
come back to the inspire, it may have been a bad piece of hardware and just needed to be exchanged. Happened with my wife's Aria, couldn't get any cell connection. We ordered it online but the ATT operator said we could take it in to any corporate ATT store. She did, they checked for a bad SIM, nope, so they exchanged the phone and tested it on the spot, works fine.
The ROM development has been fast so far, but I'm waiting for it to mature too. I played with a Fuze and different android roms for almost two years but the process for the Inspire is so different. Been using my Inspire since the day they hit the stores, stock rom for now...
yeah i am deff a tinker with the OS, so i think i might have to come back
In the last year I've had a ton of phones (I'm the head of our IT department so I get to "evaluate" smartphones for use within the organization) and the Inspire is by far the favorite I have EVER used.
Just for comparison sake I've had: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, Blackberry Bold 9700, Blackberry Torch, Samsung Captivate, HTC Aria, Samsung Focus, Motorola Atrix (still have), Dell Streak, Motorola Droid 2 Global, Blackberry Storm 1 and 2, and finally the Inspire.
Even though I haven't rooted the phone yet (plan to in the next day or say) this device is easily the best I have ever used and I couldn't be happier.
I came from an i4 and let my wife have it. I use her phone on occasion and I can't beleive how boring it is. If you love IOS so much. Root and rom with MIUI. I flashed it last night and it's freaking cool!!! So much like IOS! I went back to core droid as it didn't seem as peppy but it was still more peppy that my I4 was the day I got it.

Yup iOS is polished and does what it does well, but it's BORING! It's hardly changed at all since the first iPhone.

I can ditto a majority of what was mentioned here. I've had more smartphone in the past two years, I've honestly lost track. The inspire to me is by far my favorite and I haven't even tinkered yet. Actually love the phone stock, but that's my preference.
So, would you be making a good choice coming back to the inspire? Ultimately that's a decision only you can make.
As for the issue you experienced with your first inspire, it certainly doesn't sound like a typical experience.

Switched from the i4, won't look back at all. I haven't even rooted my phone yet and I believe it is a better phone and more fun to operate. I like the i4, but it does get repetative very fast. I don't regret it at all, and will probably make it even more concrete once I get it rooted. I say switch back but that's just me.
Had friends jailbreak their iphone 4s out of jealousy of the custom roms on my old captivate lol. and yet they still tell me how far superior ios lol

[Q] Should I buy a TB out of contract?

I am really really sick of this Droid 2 that VZW replaced my Droid with. I'm sick of Moto services invading my phone and slowing it down. There's no true ASOP build. This phone sucks balls.
I was set on buying an Incredible 2 OoC b/c it was cheap at $440 and saving my upgrade till later, but where I'm moving to next week already has LTE towers.
Do I really want to wait 2 months using this laggy trash? And possibly end up getting a TB anyway because the other phones coming out suck.
Or do I want to get a TB and save my upgrade till later in the Q4 2011/Q1 2012 when NFC Ice Cream Sandwich phones come out.
Don't want a Charge, poor build material choices.
Don't want a Revolution. Bing...
Does it really matter? Not really... You just root and you can put whatever you want and however you want.
Motorola tends to lock their bootloaders and make it hard to do what you want.
Samsung stated that they'll never lock it that way(Not in those words, but given the sense that they will leave it open)
HTC has been locking down their devices, but not as tough as Motorola does.
So basically pick a device with the hardware you want, and make sure it's root and you can install custom roms/kernels.
The T-Bolt is a great phone, and it has excellent community support. I have absolutely no complaints about my phone (aside from the battery life).
That being said, the Galaxy S II that's coming out looks sexy as hell. It might be worth the wait to hold out for that. Honestly, it's totally up to you.
There was talk about tiered 4G plans, which is what made me opt for the early upgrade to the T-Bolt (hoping to be grandfathered in to unlimited 4G). I haven't heard much on that front, but it's still a possibility.
wait a few months
from everything i've ever read about samsung phones, their software support is absolutely horrible. slow updates, faulty gps etc. i've heard a ton of people complain about the issue, and it seems to be the case with all their phones... never had one, but that's the impression i get.
the thunderbolt is a decent phone, but all it really has over the droid x is 4g. the t-bolt screen might be a little better, but not much. in day to day use it's not faster, the battery isn't even close and the build quality of the DX is equal or better. if i were you i would pick up a DX on craigslist for $175 and save your upgrade for a few months. The dx has even more dev support than the T-bolt and it's the best phone I ever had.
bottom line is, if you really want 4g speeds right now, really really bad, then get the thunderbolt. if you can do without that for awhile i think you will be really happy with a DX, especially after using the Droid 2, and you'll spend less than half the money.
the above is just my .02.
Show me a HTC or Motorola phone with latest software on it
Not you fat Jesus
I bought mine off contract and am very happy I did it. Yes there are a few issues, but nothing a little root cant fix.
Though waiting a few months for a better phone won't hurt, the TB is a great choice.

I just have to say that this cracks me up every time I see you post it.
Once you get a taste of 4G, you will never want a phone that is 3G only. So if you are moving to 4G area and don't want to pay full retail, I suggest you get a used Tbolt from craigslist and use it until something comes along that you like better, then sell the Tbolt
i love my TB, i have it rooted with das bamf NTE 1.6.3 and its about the coolest thing since MP3s.. as with others, the battery life on this thing is fkin AWFUL!! i have the extended battery and i still dont feel like its enough, however i use my phone probably more than i should or more than others. either way the LTE network is retarded fast and i'd never want 3g.
First off I just want to say I owned a droid 2 and it wasn't that bad. I jumped to the thunderbolt just to lock in the 4g rate. The bigger screen is a nice plus but other than that is the same thing. I wasn't overly impressed as other owners of the droid x and 2 have stated is not that big of a jump.
Before I end let me just say other than software wise android phones are exactly where I want them. I don't need a dual core chip in my phone and 4g is. good enough for anything I would ever want to do with my phone. I'm sure most of you will disagree but that's just how I feel. Flame away!

I picked up a TB on craigslist for $350. The custom roms still seem a bit premature, however they should evolve over time. Nonetheless it's an amazing phone. If you have a desk job or spend a lot of time in your car, the battery life is not much of an issue. Just stay plugged in.
Got my TB off Craigslist for a fascinate trade plus 150$. I love it so far.. 4g is amazing..once you.have it you won't want to go back.
Roms are not bad. I'm waiting for a complete cm7 or sense 3.0 rom but other than that das bamf runs fantastic.
If you have the cash and want a great phone with a growing dev community, go for it.

Thank you for all the input.
It's funny the other 2 forums told me I'm a moron and this one says Buy a TB!!!
I use over 2GB of data a month so the 4G unlimited (Hopefully grandfathered for life) makes it very tempting since my upgrade isn't till mid July which is around the time the rumors of tiered data plans landing. I'm also not to optimistic about an actual new phone coming out then. Maybe the SGSII but I really hate the fact that it doesnt have a search button. It's a damn Google phone and I use the search button all the time, for GOOGLE, not Bing!
I didn't even think about craigslist. That might be a good option.
As for a cheap DX. No way. It basically is a D2 minus the keyboard. I like the keyboard, I can sacrifice it for a 4G newish phone but not for an X. and I hate the Blur invasion, and locked bootloader. My D2 has been running custom roms. They're just too laggy and buggy still. Fab, Kejar, and Rummy are awesome, but they all had DXs and the D2 ports were just not good. Most of it I blame on Blur still having to be in there. I've been running GB stock blur and custom and for the first time since my D1 ADW launcher gets kicked out of memory and has to reload when I hit home.... I hate it.

Looking to get a new phone

Hey, I was lookin to get a new phone after my samsung vibrant got broken, I was thinking of getting the sensation at the 549.99 price from a tmobile store, but was also considering talking to my mom about getting an iPhone 4 at the 199.99 price and using the extra ~$400 to help pay for service on the new network (don't want to get it on tmobile because I couldn't live with edge all the time lol..) I was using my sisters iPod for the time being and it runs smooth and such and I'm liking the speed of it even though it's only the 2g one so I know the iPhone 4 would be much faster. What would you consder I do, I had the vibrant for about a year so I'm use to android but all my friends have iPhones and play there iPhone games together lol just looking for opionions on the matter.
Tl;dr - htc sensation or iPhone 4
Join your friends, get a iPhone 4
Dude,
I just got rid of my iPhone 4. And am SOOO FREAKIN HAPPY.
I had iPhones since the original roll out. While it may seem all cool and sexy be prepared to enter Apple's iron fist. Even jailbroken you ALWAYS have to be ready for Apple to update the firmware and if you aren't careful you end up in the same boat. Un-jailbroken with a phone that Apple wants not what you want. I'm using the G2x. And while there are some.flaws with the stock phone they can be overcome.
I also switched to simple mobile for my carrier. $60.00 monthly for unlimited everything. You wont touch that with att.
Say no to Apple my friend.

Ya I was thinking about that i've always been against apple and there bland phones (Android has more eye candy IMO) and actually convinced my sister and her boyfriend to get androd tablets (galaxt tab 10.1 and moto xoom respecetivly,so I'm prly gonna end up getting the sensation.
Bit ot from the op but how might I bargain down the price/get free assecorys fr the tmo reps?
I was going to go with the G2x, it has quality control issues. Then it was the sensation, it has the locked bootloader nonsense.
Depending on if HTC unlocks the bootloader shortly, or devs find a way, will be the deciding factor on the sensation. And I mean in the next couple weeks. If not, then I'm waiting on the next Nexus phone that's coming this holiday season with ice cream sandwich. It's going to be a MONSTER. Actually, I think I'll just wait..

Thunder bolt is a bust

To: ALL
I got the TB first week of its release. I was its biggest fan, defending it, learning everything about it, rooting , roming, kerneling, tweaking. Everything like a normal flashaholic would do.
To set the Hate straight, I adore HTC because its rooted in my DNA and I support my countries products. But OMFG the Thunderbolt is a bust. I know our natural reaction is to defend it because most of us are locked up for 2 years, and maybe some even spent cash to buy this phone out of contract. God bless you.
But this phone has not lived up to the hype. not one bit. This is not the phone of my ****ing dreams. all i see is the potential for this phone to be great. While we are waiting for this potential to happen, other phones are slowly coming in and smashing our Dreams..
The sooner we can be honest with ourselves is when we can finally appreciate what this phone is. Its average, maybe its better then the older phones, maybe this was the next gen android, but this is the pre alpha next gen android.
If i was going to buy anything based on potential and speculation i would buy this phone for $100.. if i were to buy a phone of my dreams, then i would pay $250..
1st round BUST.
I like the TB but have three advantages over most people.
1. I didn't have any expectations going into the purchase. When I found out that Verizon was going to tiered pricing I just looked at the available phones and picked the TB. A colleague has one and he had good reviews. It replaced my ageing Droid Incredible and has done a fine job of doing that. Not having expectations makes a phone better. I didn't set the bar higher than the device could live up to.
2. I don't change ROMS. I'm happy with the stock phone based upon #1 above.
3. I'm in a situation where I don't have to worry about contract length. If I want to change in a few months, I will. It puts a lot less stress on me to make sure the phone performs. I'll probably have a different phone by the end of the year.
I love my Thunderbolt. Now that I'm running CM7 and a custom kernal it great. I had an Eris for 18 months, I know pain
Plus something better is always going to come along within months, it's the nature of the industry.
I have had my Tbolt since Launch and Im have been happy with it. I never experienced any of the issues that were reported around. Its done everything I could ask and running strong. I only rooted to have the wifi teather..
My only peeve with the bolt is that the screen won't turn off when I'm in a call.
other than that i am ok with it.
And i qualify for an upgrade within 6 months (didnt pay full price for the bolt either). hopefully vz will get a LTE nexus phone.

I love my TB. If u think its pre alpha or whatever u can wait. But in the end ur always going to be waiting cuz there is always going to be a phone thats better then the last one.
So far the pros have outweighed the cons. Not many smartphones will deliver 35+Mbps download speeds. I at times get data speeds that is faster than most peoples home wifi. Of course its not perfect. It also has things I don't like. But I intend to keep it until the next HTC with LTE is released.

I've got no patience. I bought my TB on January and since I've bought a INC and OG Droid. I haven't even received the droid but I want a Droid 3 now. I'm actually thinking of selling my Glock for the Droid 3 but I know in 6 months I'll feel bad for doing it.
Edit: The Tbolt is a great phone I'm just bored already.
I got my Thunderbolt about a month after release and other than the battery life I have had no complaints. There will always be things that it owuld be nice to change on any phone.....(hence rooting). But even the things I can't change are still ok to me. I got in before the tiered plans started and when the bionic comes out I am seriously considering it but if I don't get that and I wait a bit longer these things I know for sure when I get a new phone.
1) It will be a 4G LTE phone. 4G is exceptional in the Spokane area and I am addicted to the download speeds. After playing with my sons phone and my wifes Droid X, I will happily stay with 4G
2) I want a same size screen. (Just cant imagine squinting my eyes to see my phone screen again
3) It will have to be a VZW phone because other than AT&T nobody else has as good a connection to me
4) I gotta be able to root it because crapware\bloatware sucks

Anyone else buy the G2X because it was so close to Vanilla Android?

One of the reasons I went with this phone roughly 22 months ago was that it was expected to get updates to Android very quickly, since it didn't have Sense or some other heavy overlay.
Funny, huh? Since it ended up one of the WORST phones I could have picked for any real updates. Ahh, the irony.
Anyone else do the same thing? I honestly can't wait to chuck this thing, and now that it's down to $50 per line to get out of my contract 2 months early, I'm very tempted to do so and pick up a Droid DNA on Verizon or some other powerhouse.
It's not worth getting any android phone that isn't Nexus or has a huge HUGE base (galaxy s3). I wouldn't trust the DROID DNA, honestly. Verizon can really suck with updates, too.
Don't make the same mistake again.

You should wait for May at least to see what Google rolls out, whether it is the moto X phone or something else. Also Id be surprised why you would do verizon and agree to pay prob at least $30 more per month when you can stick with Tmo or go simple talk with an unlocked GSM phone.
I got his phone for two reasons.
1. Because it was vanilla.
2. As soon as I heard nvidia was making tegra I checked everyday for news on the it's release.
Yes I waited a long ass time and nvidia didnt put out a tegra till they came out with tegra 2.
But I'm still happy with this phone.
Go to any phone thread, they all say the same thing.
"worst phone ever"
"worst company ever"
People are never happy.
This phone competes with phones coming out today with a proper stable ROM and I think that is great.
No it doesn't compete with phones coming out today. Don't try to ignore the truth.

Overclocked to 1.55 ghz with the supercharger on aggressive, it performs well. I can do anything any new phone can do! (except take good pictures, camera became ****)
I also remember watching a promo video by LG on Tmo website claiming "pure vanilla Android experience." That along with the G2x name - hinting at G1 roots- and other factors (dual core, Tegra, etc.) falsely presumed timely updates or at least easy ROM updating. I came from the pure vanilla original Droid. I wanted the same experience. Boy did I make the same huge ironic mistake. Trouble is, this is the phone I switched my wife off her iPhone for. Disappointing at best.
True, there are some great devs who have made this phone passable. Unfortunately, TEGRA/nvidia had their hands cuffed and LG won't supply them with a key. Tmo is an enabler in the whole debacle.
Besides, even though I always will root my phone, one shouldn't have to for reliable functionality.
I think the only Android phone I will ever buy is a Nexus. Wait,I can't even buy an effing Nexus! LG should allow special Nexus purchasing concessions for all g2x owners. It might help me get rid of this nasty taste in my mouth
Now this phone is to old and too forgotten to have any hope. If you love this phone, great. But, my etudes phone is still completely stock. If you haven't driven a completely stock g2x lately. Try it. It is a pathetic sluggish joke that might be funny if it didn't freeze up during the performance all day long.

You forgot to note that its horrible battery life as well with those mods.

Yes, the almost vanilla Android was a major reason I got a G2x. Like others, I assumed that meant quick updates. And while I agree that it has very solid hardware that should perform better today than it would with old software, it's still nothing like the Note 2 I got to replace it.
As other have mentioned, a big failure with the phone, other than updates, is the camera. I have small kids, and the 2 second lag makes the camera next to useless. Even if the kids hold still long enough, the camera quality isn't very good.
Overall, I was happy with the phone for most of the 18 months I had it. If it had a better camera and got reasonable updates, I probably would have waited until my contract was up (although t-mo was great about upgrading me early, to my surprise).

My words exactly. It was my first android and I did enjoy it, very briefly. Until the first freeze and random reboot. Of course that happened while I still could have returned the damn korean crap but I figured tmo and lg said they'll fix it right away, and they couldn't possibly abandon their customers right?!
Anyway. Finally dumped that piece of shmit and got a gs3. Can't be happier with this device, xda and t-mobile truly unlim h+

Ditto here. This was my first foray into the smart phone world (had a feature phone previously) and the big reason I got it was because of the "pure vanilla Android experience" they were touting about it. I expected frequent updates, and a phone I'd be using for years.
Now, I'm torn. I actually still love my phone, but the lack of any *stock* update is disappointing. There are lots of roms/mods out there, but none of them are perfect, and I'm not hard core enough to try out different ones.
Actually, if I could just have a GPS that worked 95% of the time I'd be pretty happy. I've tried so many different tweaks and still can't get it to work fast and consistently.
And as much as I'd love to upgrade and get a Nexus 4 (which I'm close to being eligible for) the lack of a removable battery and an SD slot are VERY big downers.

If it couldn't keep up then you wouldn't still be seeing kernels and ROMs being made and updated for this phone.
LG may have never gave the phone the support it deserved but this site sure has and I thank them for that.
Actually support of g2x is dying. Many great devs have moved on to better and newer phones.
LG never again for me! That's why I was so disappointed when goggles announced nexus 4 by lg...
Verizon SUCKS with updates, and they tried their damndest to keep certain apps widgets and irons of my new Note 2. Thankfully, that's why XDA exists. The bootloader took awhile to get unlocked, but we finally have some kernel/rom options and development from other carriers is making its way to our forums. God stuff.

Its more nvidias fault then lg's. Nvidia is closed source so ofc there not gonna try and help LG out by giving them the drivers they needed for hw acceleration. If anything Google choosing LG for the nexus 4 boosted LG as a company as they actually release updates every other day practically, it is a nexus phone.. Just look at how well the LG nexus 4 has sold for proof. Nvidia and there closed source tegra need to stay off android IMO as they only hurt and delay android devices getting updated.
